Anastasia’s Pool was named after a id 9 former lighthouse keeper’s wife. Patrick Percy over.5tmh** ande e po f ills had been a Broome policeman who moved into A reawllith watoelr. pearling and made his fortune. He had his Chinese crewman, Wing Loong, concrete the experyiespecial nce. bottom of a rockpool for his wife, who was crippled with arthritis. So very romantic! Far from being a mermaid-like maiden, Anastasia is said to have been obese and able to break wind at will, which she would do when she was near people she didn't like. The pool only fills up a few times a year when the tide is 9.5m or higher -**(subject to a south westerly swell) so his poor wife only got relief on rare occasions! The location is stunning, surrounded by beautiful rock formations, overlooking the Indian Ocean.
ARt
We are surrounded by art in Broome. This mosaic is walked over everyday by thousands of feet. When you find out where it is, have a good look. It is a beautiful creation. If you get the opportunity, go to an opening night at an art exhibition. It’s a thrill when you see a piece that talks to you, to get that red dot on the wall, plus a special treat to meet the artist! Art exhibitions are posted on www.uniquelybroome.com
8 Uniquely Broome
This is a very brief story of a woman that has created all forms of art and ended up welding amazing sculptures. Marilyn’s ‘studio’ is basic. A big lean-to shed and a sea container! Lots of steel, tools and pieces of art in all stages of completion. It’s like a large bower bird’s shed; pieces collected from everywhere. “From an early age I was active in the fight against apartheid and knew at some stage I would have to leave South Africa. I wanted to be an artist but chose the field of study that would sustain me and hopefully have some positive influence. My results got me into Cambridge, England, which I did not accept as it felt way too stuffy for me. For three years I studied and lectured in world religions in Manchester until I realised I wasn't going to change the world. I changed my world instead. I went to London and immersed myself in art. I did a lot of night courses, built a kiln in the back yard, broke all the rules and had lots of explosions. While I worked in clay, I had a strong desire to create in steel. I don't know what it was, just a sub conscious thing, though it did not come to fruition till 15 years later . I moved to Australia when I was 39. England fed my head but not my spirit and I found the north west coast of Australia, especially the Kimberley, felt
like home. The TAFE college in Broome was across the road from where I lived, so I immersed myself in the metal work class, learning as much as I could. With welding you can build strong, large forms quickly. I like to combine materials, like wood and clay, using all the skills that I have gathered over the years. I have made jewellery, so there are fine little details in some of the pieces that people might not even notice. When I walk into my workshop I don't have an idea of what I am going to do. There are so many elements around me to work with. When creating a commission piece, then I have a deadline, otherwise I might be working several pieces at one time. Sometimes when I walk past one of my sculptures all of a sudden I can see what that piece needs - everything is a work in progress. Its like being a chef. I’ve got the ingredients, lots of ingredients, what I do is like whipping up the most amazing meal. I don't know what it is going to be, I just get a feel for it and know where it is going. Every day is a sense of adventure. The work is not glamourous, though I love it! My workshop is really a shelter, open to nature. I keep thinking I will build a shed but I get busy and it never seems to happen!”

We paint from our heart and re-tell stories told by the old people. We call ourselves the Bidyadanga Community Artists as most of us were born and bred in this country. But some were taken away from families by missionaries to Bidyadanga to learn Kartiya (non-Aboriginal) way of living. But we also have our nanna and grands from the desert. They came out between 30-40 years ago. Not a long time. Throughout the years, we gained Certificate 1, II and III in Visual Arts and Contemporary Craft to equip ourselves with art techniques. The outcome of this training is to establish our art centre like the other working artists in other well-known and established art centres. Cemeteries & Chinatown
Cemeteries
Japanese & Chinese cemeteries
To walk through makes me feel so sad that these people never returned to their homeland and their loved ones. Across the road is Taiji Road – this is named because a lot of the Japanese pearl divers came from this area in Japan – Taiji is Broome’s ‘sister city’. Map Ref N11
Broome cemetery Truly this is a meeting and resting place of many different peoples and religions who have lived, worked and died here. Tourists often overlook the Broome cemetery but there are many historical graves including Sisters of St John of God who have a wonderful graveyard section. These Irish Sisters arrived 1907 and they didn’t go home. Explore and you will find other Broome personalities in the cemetery that you’ve read about. See if you can find Robyn Millers grave – the “Flying Nurse”
Chinatown
Chinatown is the main shopping area of Broome. It is the most confusing name for many visitors to Broome as I am sure you are looking for lots of Chinese Restaurants. Today Chinatown is full of food, fashion, pearl jewellery and other retail shops, with four Chinese restaurants. In the early days it was full of pearling sheds, shops, opium dens, noodle houses, boarding houses, laneways and where all the Asiatics lived whilst the Europeans lived in Old Broome area. Take some time to walk down Carnarvon Street and look at the original buildings. Especially on the western side, you will notice that there are still living quarters behind the shops. Drop into Sun Pictures – the oldest operating picture theatre gardens in the world!

The Chinese gate in Chinatown was built in 2007. The gate marks and celebrates the 100th year of Chinese people living in Broome. Research into the oldest tomb at the Chinese cememtery provided this information. Every Spring the Chinese people of Broome get together for Hang Shan Jie – the festival to honour the ancestors – which is held on the 15th day of the 7th month of the lunar calendar. The Chinese people have lived in Broome and called this place ‘home’ for a very long time. For some Chinese people this translates into 5 generations in Broome.
Moon Festival The Chinese Moon Festival is on the 15th of the 8th lunar month. It's also known as the Mid-autumn Festival. Traditional festivals are deeply embedded in Chinese culture. The Moon Festival is one of the most important traditional events for the Chinese.
The Moon Festival is full of legendary stories. Legend says that Chang Er flew to the moon, where she has lived ever since. You might see her dancing on the moon during the Moon Festival. The Moon Festival is also an occasion for family reunions. When the full moon rises, families get together to watch the full moon, eat moon cakes, and sing moon poems. With the full moon, the legend, the family and the poems, you can't help thinking that this is really a perfect world. That is why the Chinese are so fond of the Moon Festival.
Chinatown
Chinese Community in Broome
The Moon Festival is also a romantic one. A perfect night for the festival is if it is a quiet night with a clear sky and a mild breeze from the sea. Lovers spend such a romatic night together tasting the delicious moon cake with some wine while watching the full moon. Even for a couple who can't be together, they can still enjoy the night by watching the moon at the same time so it seems that they are together at that hour. The moon cake is the food for the Moon Festival. The Chinese eat the moon cake at night with the full moon in the sky. al The 1901 Feder ed pt Parliament ado n a a West Australi e Act allowing th to ry st pearling indu d re u employ colo year labour on threecontracts Moon cake

I first visited Dampier Peninsula in 1991. I was with some people who had never been off-road in their 4WD and we had left our instructions to where we were going at the hotel. Not a good start. We got lost, bogged and frazzled. I remember climbing a sandhill to see if help was at hand. The view was amazing. If you’re looking for a bit of adventure and Broome is too busy, head out along the Broome Highway for eight kms and then turn left. The Cape Leveque Road stretches for 200kms right up to One Arm Point. Half the road is sealed and half dirt. It’s recommended to have a 4WD as I know you will be tempted to take that off road track and I guarantee you will get bogged. Known to local Indigenous people as "Ardi", meaning heading north, the Dampier Peninsula offers that get down and dirty holiday if you wish, Fuel and supplies can or a bit of luxury if be purchased but facilities are on that’s your style. ly available at cert This is your ai opportunity to locations and ti n m es. meet the locals, Please note do gs not learn about remote always w el co m e, community life alco steeped in culture purchol cannot be hased anywhere and history. on th e P eninsula and Don’t miss out! medical facilitie s are limited.

Dampier Peninsula
At each of the communities along the Peninsula it is protocol to visit the Community Office or shop and ask permission to visit, sometimes this is difficult if the office is closed. Some of the communities ask you to purchase a Day Pass or charge a fee. You may be given a handy map of the area so you don’t miss out on the best sights to see, and receive information about the community and any possible camping grounds. Don’t be put off - it is well worth dropping in for a visit - your trip to the Dampier Peninsula is all about culture!
Djarindjin Community - 170 kms from Broome

Beagle Bay is home of the Nyul Nyul people who are the traditional owners of this area. It is famous for its unique Church Sacred Heart with its pearl shell altar built by the Pallottine monks and local Indigenous residents in 1917. If you have seen the move Bran Nue Dae you will recognise the altar. It is worth having a look at. There is a shop at Beagle Bay if you need any emergency supplies. fired oven at their General Store which is open 8am - 11am and 1pm to 3.30pm. They have a selection of accommodation, an Art & Craft centre plus the famous Paperbark Church - Christ the King Church. Built from local bush timber and paperbark walls.
Located at the tip of the Dampier Peninsula, One Arm Point Community, or Ardyaloon as it is called in Bardi, is home to approximately 400 people. The Community is surrounded by sensitive coastal areas and mangrove systems and is a great place to experience the massive tidal water movements of the King Sound. The Bardi Jawi people are strongly connected to the saltwater and have a rich culture and traditions passed down from their ancestors who lived on the surrounding islands and the mainland. The Ardyaloon Store is well stocked and open from Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm, Saturday 9am till 11.30am. On the right hand side before the roundabout, fuel is available 24/7. All major debit cards accepted. Fuel Cards are also available at the Store. Visit the Ardyaloon Hatchery – you can learn about the community’s trochus fishery tradition.
Have a close look at the reef and mangrove inhabitants of the Dampier Peninsula and explore their significance in the Bardi Jawi culture. Learn about the community’s trochus fishery tradition and the hatchery’s reef maintenance programs. You can see locally crafted products such as polished shells and jewellery or just experience the powerful tidal movements of the King Sound at the very end of the Dampier Peninsula road.
Banana Well Getaway Banana Well is a place to unwind and escape to the natural surroundings in the heart of Nyul-Nyul country. You can spend your days fishing, mud crabbing, bird watching, bush walking or just enjoy the peace and quiet. Feed our peacocks and ducks or just watch the sunsets! Dinosaurs Dinosaur footprints of the Megalosauropus broomensis
can be seen at Gantheaume Point. The reef in this area is fragile and the footprints can only be viewed on a low tide of 2.16 m or less. A plaster copy of the tracks is conveniently located at the top of the cliffs and decreases the impact of visitors on the reef. There is no signage as to where the footprints are and you need to be sure footed and have a keen eye.
The tracks near Broome are 115 to 120 million years old and extend from south of Broome, all the way to Cape Leveque, 200 kms to the north. There are tracks of meat-eaters related to the famous Tyrannosaurus and of possibly the largest dinosaur of all, an immense sauropod which left behind a print
measuring 1.7 m across. The tracks found in the area prove that all the main groups of dinosaurs inhabited Australia. There were the huge sauropods meat-eating theropods, armoured ankylosaurs vegetarian ornithopods and even the spectacular Stegosaurus with its strange fin

Entertainment
I am always amazed at the talent and entertainment we get in this small town. To get your Broome experience, buy The Broome Advertiser - that has the gig guide and information on anything that is happening on the local scene. You cannot get bored if you like a bit of night life. The pubs and bars Roey, Mercure, Divers Tavern, Mangrove, Zoo Bar, Town Beach Bar (has the crazy crab races on a Sunday!) all have different things happening on different nights and there is a real Broome music culture happening. Broome has refurbished and extended the old Civic Centre building and so look out for any entertainment that might be happening @ the Civic Centre. Those who have attended the Broome races always return, and the track and weather report is always ‘fine and good’. You can purchase a season pass if you wish or just come for a day. All of the elements of the show seem to weave together to create a tapestry which is quintessentially ‘Broome’. The venue at Goolarri Media feels like a local secret, tucked away in an unassuming back street. The food on offer is delicious, diverse and really reflects the town’s multicultural society. The traditional and contemporary dance performances combined with spoken word in Yawuru language showcases Indigenous culture. Then there is the ‘music and picture show’ as the star attraction, a 90 minute sonic and visual history of Broome. Well known local music identity, Stephen Pigram, the creative director and has made this all come to life. Old footage of the town is accompanied by a bevy of Broome’s talented singers and musicians, who perform a carefully chosen selection of songs.
This is the special ‘saltwater music’ that many refer to when speaking of the sounds of Broome. For locals, the show stirs a sense of nostalgia. The footage reminds them of the Broome of the past, and many may even see themselves
or their family. The songs are a soundtrack from their lives. For short term locals, it is an education on how Broome came to be the town they now call home. It reminds us why we love Broome and why we love living here. A Taste of Broome
has managed to distill the true essence of Broome into one night and it is truly magical. As a visitor to Broome, you should be encouraged to see this unique event. You will glimpse what makes this town tick and gain an

Shinju Matsuri Festival of the Pearl The annual Shinju Matsuri (which is Japanese for “Festival of the Pearl”) originated from three cultural festivals – Japanese Obon Matsuri, Malaysian Hari Merdeka, Independence Day from British rule in 1957, and the Chinese Hang Seng. The festival united these cultural groups. From these original cultural celebrations the Shinju Matsuri then became a festival that celebrated Broome and encouraged tourism. A world-class festival in one of Australia's most unique and spectacular towns, events include the waking of Sammy the Dragon, touching tributes to the town’s pearling history and legends, a float parade through the historic streets of Chinatown, Carnival of Nations, Dragon Boat Races, Gala Ball, and an impressive closing ceremony concert culminating in a fireworks display. Vicki McCormack I started making Aussie Wakky Wear in 2001 using recycled chenille bedspreads that I could get from op shops or ebay. (Chenille is the unique process of wrapping short lengths of fabric, called ‘piles’, around a tightly wound core of yarn. The edges of these piles then stand at right angles from the yarn’s core, giving chenille both its softness and its characteristic look.) In 2005, due to lack of bedspreads, I could no longer continue making Wakky Wear. In December 2007, I went to Vietnam in search of material, which I could not find. I continued on to China as this is where all the bedspreads were made years ago. They made a sample and sent it to me. It was the same but brand new. So now Aussie Wakky Wear is back. My passion and craft has evolved from my love of life on the land. The energy from both the desert and the sea is my inspiration. My first hats were fashioned whilst living on outback cattle and sheep stations.
Nowhere Else But Here stocks a huge range of cotton garments to suit our fabulous climate, with 98% of our labels being Australian designers exclusive to our boutique.
My creations are handmade using the classic techniques of millinery and every piece is a one-off. Wild feathers are hand collected and the pearls are locally grown in the south sea waters near Broome. Hats by Felicity has proudly exhibited in galleries and jewellery outlets and is an annual parade fixture at the Broome races. As the Milliner on the Move I have showcased my collections far and wide, from remote cattle stations to innerSydney homes. I have co-exhibited with others and proudly held two solo exhibitions in Broome. Let me create you an amazing hat for that special occasion. There won’t be any other like it!

Everyone worries about what to wear and what to pack when going on holiday. My advice is to throw out the high-heeled shoes (except for the Race days in Broome), use your pantihose to tie up the tomatoes in the garden or just don’t bring them to Broome! For the guys - no more suits, ties and those dreadful shoes. They call it “Kimberley Casual” and you can get away with almost anything! Broome’s fashion shops reflect our all-year-round summer. You can always find something special to wear whilst on holidays and when you go home everyone will say “where did you get that?”. So don’t pack those horrible dark heavy clothes that we all tend to wear in the southern climates and enjoy the freedom of fashion in Broome.

Fauna & Flora
Animals in Broome are not in your face. They love to hide and really only come out in the early morn, on dusk or at night. I started creating this list of creatures I have come across in the Kimberley we have an abundance - you just have to LOOK. Coucal Pheasant - over the road in the bush Tata lizard (Ganada) - it always seems that it is waving at you Frilled-neck lizard - during the Wet season on the road Whales - between June - October Dolphins - every time we go out on the boat Sea Snake - walking along the beach Mud Crab - Dampier Creek Lemon & Tiger Sharks in the ocean Processionary catepillars - in May sometimes on the road Bats - in the night sky every night Geckos - in my house Goanna (Bungarra) - in my back yard Merten’s Water Monitor - at the caravan park in Broome Blue Tongue Lizards - in my garden Salt water crocodiles - at Malcolm Douglas Wildlife Park Wallabies - near the Port Dingoes - at Barred Creek Northern Quolls - at Freshwater Cove Green Tree Frogs - in my outdoor bathroom Mice - not native but I found them in my pool Snakes always at a distance! Fish of Wader birds on the beach many varieties - when I go fishing Early November I noticed two lovers on the side of the road.
48 Uniquely Broome
The list of Flora is endless and I am not an expert. A great reference book is Broome & Beyond - it has everything you need to know . Look around and you will notice the Boab, Jigal tree (they call it the Mother-in-Law tree as custom states that a man and his mother-in-law should not look or interact with each other) Gubinge (high in vitamin C). Rosella (makes the bestest jam), and the mangrove system around the bay. We have an amazing climate that allows us to grow the native flora and to also have tropical gardens - the best of both worlds!

Sail-fishing is one of the most spectacular forms of light tackle fishing we have in Broome. With speco jumps, backflips and tailwalks, they really put on a good show! Combined with an abundance of wild life like - turtles, birds, whales, manta rays etc. they make up an amazing fishery. The game fishing season starts in April and lasts till Oct/Nov, with the earlier months April/May producing Spanish Mackerel, Tuna and Marlin/Sailfish turning up in numbers late June. We fish using the switch bait method so we’re on the move all day. This is a light tackle sport suitable for all age groups. Flying Boat Wrecks This photo was taken just as the sun was rising.
It’s an eerie feeling walking out on the mudflats of Roebuck Bay when the tide is at its lowest to see the wrecks of the Catalinas and Dorniers that were ‘strafed’ on the 3rd March 1942. Nine Japanese aircraft attacked 15 flying boats that were refuelling in Roebuck Bay. These planes, belonging to Qantas, the Royal Australian Airforce, the Royal Netherlands Navy and the US Navy, were transferring mainly women and children refugees from Java to southern states of Australia. The records are sketchy so no one knows really how many lives were lost approximately 80. All were fleeing from Java as the Japanese were
invading that area and Broome was a refuelling stop for the planes. A good book to read if you want to know more is ‘Broome’s One Day War’ by Mervyn Prime. Available from the Broome Museum and the Kimberley Bookshop. Remember that the wrecks are living graves and not to walk too close to the remains. It is a very historical site and apparently one of the best accessible wreck sites in the world. The wrecks are visible on a low tide of one metre or less. Why the RED SOCKS? Dave Dureau I first met Dave Dureau in 2002 when I had flown into Freshwater Cove in the seaplane. This wiry and frail looking man walked into the camp from nowhere, with his backpack full of plant specimens. Little did I know that looks do deceive. For the next few days Dave would be dropped off in the bush from the dinghy, to appear at nightfall with more plant specimens. I was fascinated by this man. To have a conversation with Dave is like climbing a mountain. It can be exhausting and invigorating. The subject changes from local government, Broome’s history, to pearling and then to the environment. The advert that I first saw about Dave was so apt "Stop This Man". He is unstoppable. Dave does stand out in the crowd, and so do his red socks! I asked Dave the question. Why Red Socks? "Well, he said, ‘the establishment in Broome always wore white socks. To me white socks were associated with pearls, sitting on verandahs and having cups of tea. I was a worker and white socks were not my cup of tea. I wanted to make a statement. These socks are red to go with the red pindan and the fact that I am an outside worker. A bit overt I know and not very subtle. So it evolved out of my work" said Dave. Dave's life has taken many paths from

Agricultural College in New Zealand, working on farms in Victoria, fishing on boats in Eden, travelling around Australia, mining, pegging out claims in Onslow. His life turned to Broome when he received a telegram from his father. "I was near Cairns and about to start a mining job when a telegram arrived . “Voyage to Broome on the John Louis lugger to complete a season of pearl diving out of Broome, be in Thursday Is. immediately’. The voyage on the lugger was basic and primitive, as we had no power, shower or toilet. Food was good, though we mainly lived off the sea on fish, turtle and dugong. On the journey was 4 Torres Strait Islander crew, Alan Badger (diver), myself, Dale Chapman (dive team organiser) and Peter Cumming (skipper & ex naval commander). That was the beginning of white people diving successfully for pearl shell using hookar gear. Till then diving was done by Aboriginal, or indentured Japanese, Aboriginal, Malays and Chinese. I dived for eight years and loved the life, the camaraderie, the ocean." Dave is known for his passion on the environment, development of Broome and its future. “My favourite drive is on Hamersley St looking out over the bay - where else would you get that view - let’s keep it that way!”

Food Tong’s Chinese Restaurant

Yeeda Meat Shop
Tong family
Yeeda Pastoral Company
Tong’s Chinese Restaurant was established in 1973 – owned and built by the late Ma Wong Tong. It is a family business, passed onto his son Kevin who is the current cook at the restaurant. Ma Wong’s wife Ko grows her Asian vegetables and herbs in the garden at the back of the restaurant during the season (June, July, August) which are incorporated into our menu dishes. The restaurant creates authentic Cantonese cuisine. The fully air-conditioned restaurant gives you and your guests comfortable surroundings for your dining pleasure. We cater for group bookings and banquets.
We are proud to be able to supply a “paddock to plate” product. The beef that we sell is sourced from our cattle stations around the Kimberley. The cattle are grass fed which leads to a healthier and more flavoursome product. Our shop is now in its second year and the support of locals and tourists has been fantastic. Our meat can be found on many Broome restaurant menus and is for sale in Kimberley locations such as Willare Bridge Roadhouse if you need to restock. Visit us today to try our great value and truly local product.

All the family lived on premises at the back of the shop. My parents didn't arrive until the late 1960's and my father took a job as a pearl diver, while the rest of the family managed the shop which was built in the late 1960’s. We owned the land behind our store (Skylla Lounge Bar) which was then a chinese restaurant. Our store on the Carnarvon Street side used to be a shop and Chinese takeaway. We sold dairy goods, vegetables and frozen meat as well. Over the years the Yuen Wing Store has changed to incorporate what used to be the Chinese takeaway section and added another section which is where our camping goods are located. Our product range has changed over time to cater for the different needs of the community and has evolved to what it is today. History
Condemned Building Saved by Volunteers!
68 Uniquely Broome
In 2008 the Sailmaker’s Shed – an old, decrepit shack – received a demolition order from the Shire of Broome. The shed had sat on a back lot of Robinson Street for over 100 years, slowly crumbling under the harsh Kimberley sun. White ants had set in, the structural beams were no longer supporting the building and it looked to all the world as if this old shed that had once produced the sails for hundreds of Broome luggers had come to the end of its life. Fortunately for the shed, immediately adjacent to it was the Broome Historical Museum. Members of the Museum had for years watched the shed deteriorate, writing letters and voicing their concerns to the owners of the building, the Water Corporation and to the Shire of Broome. The responsibility for the upkeep of the shed passed back and forth. Finally the Broome Historical Society approached the Water Corporation and requested that
the land be leased to them in order for the Society to take on the responsibility of the shed. When an agreement was reached the Broome Historical Society was able to apply for grants to start the process of rebuilding the shed to meet today’s cyclone building codes. With help from the Royalties for Regions, Lotterywest and using their own funds, the Society managed to restore the structure in keeping with its heritage values. The Sailmaker’s Shed has been honoured for its restoration by receiving a High Commendation at the WA Heritage Awards and an Honourable Mention at the UNESCO Asia Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. Today the shed is included in the Broome Museum precinct, and the Broome Historical Society plans to incorporate a sail maker’s display into the building in honour of this old pearl of a shed.

I never gave a second thought to pearls until I came to Broome. Somehow you get the bug and must have a pearl. Put some time aside for some serious pearl shopping – it’s fun! The range is huge, designs are different and Broome is the place to buy a pearl. We do have the most beautiful and largest pearls in the world! Make sure you visit the many pearl shops in Chinatown or visit the Courthouse Markets on a Saturday.
Jewellery
Jewels from the Sea
You will hear over and over the following terms – so become familiar. A little knowledge is good – so you don’t become overwhelmed. Have an enjoyable shopping experience! Take home a pearl. South Sea Pearls – from the Pinctada Maxima the largest oyster in the world – this is what Broome pearls are grown in. Freshwater Pearls – from other countries, smaller in size and less valuable – still beautiful. Baroque – an irregular shaped pearl – very fashionable. Keshi – a pearl formed naturally or as a result of an implanted nucleus being rejected. The five virtues of a pearl: Colour – you can almost get the subtle colours of the rainbow – though silver white is my favourite. Complexion/Skin – bit like us, smooth complexion – beautiful pearl Lustre – does it shine? Shape – a perfect sphere is the most valuable, though like all of us, shape is a personal thing Size – we all do say size counts! Uniquely Broome

Johnny Chi Lane is a small laneway that connects Carnarvon St with Dampier Tce. On the walls of the shops along the lane you’ll find descriptions and stories of Broome's early days. There are 20 of them all up, starting at the Carnarvon St end. The stories take you all the way from the days when the first ships landed in Broome, Western Australia, through the whole history of the pearling industry and all its ups and downs, WWII, to the advent of tourism and present day Map Ref E5 Broome.
L.I.A Areas Our main light industrial area is located just a couple of kms from Chinatown on the edge of Old Broome. Here is where most Broome people go shopping. There are furniture shops, hardware, whitegoods and light industry factories. Take the time and visit a creative cooperative, The Broome Factory, and the interesting furniture shed of Stonerage. This area is well worth a drive around. The Port industrial area is more heavy industry though hidden away in there is Chimaera Pottery - a must visit! Blue Haze LIA is just 5 kms out of town on the Broome Rd – home to lots of small industry and the Norforce Army Base. Visit Hidden Valley Handcrafts who have their aromatic shop and soap factory in Harriet Rd. You may see some amazing ‘caretakers cottages’ as the LIA is part of a special residential area. People love living in the LIA.
Lurujarri Trail In 1987, the late Paddy Roe OAM, with the support of his Goolarabooloo Aboriginal community, established the Lurujarri Heritage Trail. A 9 day (80 Km) cultural walking journey along the Song Cycle between Minyirr (Broome) and Minarriny (Yellow River). The body of cultural knowledge that the old people have passed on is preserved and kept alive within this Song Cycle. It connects specific sites (Law Grounds) in a continuous linear system up the coast of the Dampier Peninsula. Along the Trail the same camping places are used as have been for millennia, the same reefs fished. The middens in the dunes are thick with shards of past feeds, spear heads, charcoal flints and grinding stones. The Goolarabooloo people are still actively engaged in looking after country despite living within a western world that would have them sell it for the greater economic resources of the nation. They believe that connection with country and culture is the base of one’s true sense of identity, spiritual and physical health, and self-esteem and continue to share their understanding. Mango Festival is in November – a taste sensation weekend 80 Uniquely Broome
You can never have too many mangoes. Though the problem is they all seem to get ripe all at once. I love making mango chips or leather as they last forever. Mango Chips The mangoes need to be ripe but not over ripe. Firm! Cut off the cheeks of the mango and remove the skin. Slice with a really sharp knife no thicker than 5mm. You will need to have a dehydrater. The time varies but usually taking about 8 hours at 55 degrees celcius. Mango Leather Puree the mango pulp and using a dehydrater spread the pulp thinly over a one of the solid sheets provided. Remember to lightly oil the sheet first otherwise the leather is hard to remove.
There is a taste for everyone from fruit vinegars, green mango chutneys, dried mango, gourmet mango conserves to Wild Hibiscus jams, syrups and fruits. We have lots of different chilli products including Mango & Chilli Sauce, Sweet Chilli Vinegar and Red Fire Chilli for the chilli lover. All products are made on the property, are gluten free and 100% natural.

Music
Broome Ukulele Band (BUB)
The Broome Ukulele Band started in January 2012 and swelled to over 20 players though not everyone turns up every week. The Bubbers are mostly locals of all ages, though we welcome tourists, passersby and attractive French backpackers, but not necessarily in that order. We sing popular tunes and in our repertoire have the extremes of Botany Bay and Riptide (and other songs about the sea). We specialise in taking other people’s songs and changing the lyrics to make them uniquely 82 Uniquely Broome

Music & Parks
Like the lapping sounds of Roebuck Bay tides, the rattle of seeds of a Poinciana tree or the Wet Season barks of our favourite Geckos, Broome music often reflects its environment. It has evolved like any ancient songline over the ages and some of Broome’s music – the Pigram Brothers, Kuckles or the Mary G Band – may reference or even contain these timeless rhythmical riffs. Music in Broome today has something for everyone whether you love pop, bluegrass, electronic or country….and western. The Broome music scene can offer the experience to match the magical nature of this location. Venues

What does all this mean? When walking, fishing, swimming, boating or driving your car on the beach, you will need to be aware of whether the water is coming in or going out. Is it a spring or neap tide and when is HIGH and LOW tide? We have an ever-changing landscape around the bay and ocean and within minutes the water can be lapping at the tyres of your car if you are parked on
the beach and decide to go for a walk! Learn how to read the tide chart – the number on the left is the time of day, the number on the right is the measurement of the tide. Take the highest number away from the smallest and this gives you a good indication of the movement of water. Neap tide has 2 to 3 metres of movement and a spring tide has 6 to10 metres of movement. You may notice a difference in high tide on a neap is early-mid morning and early-mid evening, whilst high tide on a Spring is midday and midnight! Yes, I know it is a bit complex but I assure you that if you get to understand the tides - you will always be safe.
Tides Information
The tides in Broome are among the biggest in the world. The rise and fall of the tide creates a beautiful rhythm to the day and is an integral part of our lives in Broome. We are on a peninsula surrounded by water and it affects our lives constantly. To go walking along the beach, boating, fishing, looking for dinosaur footprints, or finding the Flying Boat wrecks you really do need to have an understanding of how the tides work. The tide moves in for six hours and then out for six hours. Each week it alternates between a NEAP tide (small movement of water) and a SPRING tide (large movement of water). In and out it goes all controlled by the moon.

I am fascinated by the litte Red and Black Flying Foxes that camp in the mangroves near Streeter’s Jetty. The Flight of the Bats Each night just after sunset from Streeter’s Jetty they head out to feast. They have amazing eyesight and a good sense of smell so they find the best restaurants that have the nectar or pollen and fruit of the native trees. Also they love our mangoes and pawpaws. They are messy eaters and their ‘poo’ is an amazing paint stripper. So don’t park your car under a mango tree!

It’s Up to you -
by Julie & Ric Buist
100 Uniquely Broome
Having lived in Broome for over 20 years you begin to gain a growing appreciation and understanding of the importance and significance of this land to the nation’s first people. We decided to ‘be tourists’ for a week and joined Neville Poelina’s Uptuyu Tours and visited his country on Udialla StationOohgkalkada Wilderness Camp, a short 2.5 hr drive north from Broome to Udialla Springs. We arrived at sunset and the family welcomed us and settled us into modern Eco tents with ensuite facilities. The delicious evening meal was enjoyed under the stars with conversations of what we wanted to do for the next few days. “It’s up to you.” says Neville.
the shallows of the cooling river. While we peacefully enjoyed a swim and the natural wildlife in and around the river, Neville, accompanied by his lovely children, went off and caught some barramundi for dinner.
Our personal tour of exploring and learning the history of the natural springs in close proximity to the homestead with Nev’s wife Jo the first morning, set the scene for us. An unobtrusive smoking ceremony, morning tea and then a relaxing dip in the waters of the Fitzroy River. Jo prepared a picnic lunch and had it set up for us in
The ‘mighty’ Fitzroy is full of energy and life and also special ‘healing’ mud. The night skies are so full of stars it is magic. Our experiences were …. good for the soul, the spirit, the body and the mind. “Seize the moment” - spend a few days with Neville & Jo.
We toured around the area and learnt more of culture and history of the place. There was much opportunity for ‘quiet time’ if you so desired as our accommodation was private, peaceful and spacious. Walking the banks of the Fitzroy and catching our own barramundi was a highlight. Enjoying freshly caught jarramba (cherabin) netted in a local lake and cooked on the coals as the sunset was special.

Turtles & Volunteering
Turtle nesting season is from 1st Oct to 28th Feb. During that time on the beaches around Broome there is lots of activity at night with the turtles coming in to lay their eggs. For many years they’ve had to share this intimate process with the 4WD’s. Finally they are getting some peace as the Cable Beach Amphitheatre vehicle access is CLOSED at night to vehicles from 8pm - 6am. Also it’s closed two hours either side of the high tide when it is nine metres or greater - this is for your safety. A gate has been installed and will be locked - so don’t get stuck on the beach. All other times of the year access is open. I hope this information makes you decide not to drive on the beach during October-February • Turtles nest at the top of the beach just above high tide mark. • Vehicles damage turtle nests, compacting sand and crunching nests. • Wheel ruts can prevent hatchlings making their way to the water • Vehicle lights disturb and confuse hatchlings. • Flatback Turtles are the main nesting turtles on Cable Beach. • The Flatback Turtle is threatened and protected under Western Australian legislation.

12 Mile & Walks
12 Mile
This is a settlement 20 kms from Broome on the main highway. In the 1970s it was land allocated by the government to be used for agricultural purposes . Today it is a mixture of mango farms, cafes, organic herbs and vegie gardens, a turf farm, plant nurseries and for some people just a quiet place out of town to live. Our vegetables are grown at Kirby’s Vegies and brought into the markets each Saturday. This is where you can visit Wallis Mangoes who create their mango products for the markets. The 12 Mile Bird Park is a new tourist attraction and worth visiting. Drop into The Mango Place – Kanagae Estate on Kanagae Rd for a taste of mango wine, mango smoothies and visit their shop full of mango products. I love a Sunday drive out to 12 Mile, just to get out on the open road and out of Broome.

Osprey Nests
@ Town Beach Car Park & Hamersley St foreshore
Flying Boat Wrecks: 3 kms You can only do this when Low Tide is 1m or less. If you are an early riser then this is for you. Start walking from Town Beach directly east at least 30 minutes before low tide. Take your time as the sun may be coming up and might still be a bit dark – a beautiful time of the day. You will need your camera, drinking water and shoes. Heritage Trail There is a great booklet available at the Broome Historical Museum that gives you all the
history on this walk. It’s only $3 and a great buy. This will keep you busy all day finding and looking at the historical sites. Mangrove Walk: 2.5 kms For this walk you need to have the tide going out. Also wear closed in shoes as unfortunately there might be some glass in the sand. Find the Pearl Luggers (Dampier St, Chinatown) walk up the hill, left down the sandhill to the mangroves and then right. This walk will take you along the foreshore and will open out
onto a grassed area in front of the Mercure Inn. If you are observant you will see a couple of rocks that have on them a description of the mangroves. Look out for the monument to ‘Women in Pearling’ opposite the Conti. Continue along the foreshore, past the Catalina Apartments and then go up the boat ramp as it gets a bit difficult at this point to navigate around the foreshore. Finish by popping into the Broome Museum. Minyirr Park: 22 kms in total There are three walking trails
between the sand dunes, Cable Beach Rd, Gubinge Rd and Gantheaume Point Rd and several entrances along the way. BLUE – Nagula is the ocean walk, GREEN – Lurujarri takes you through the dune system, PINDAN – Minyirr takes you through the bush. Minyirr means birthplace, so this is an important area for the Aboriginal people. I particularly love the BLUE walk as it takes you up to the top of the dune system (well worth the sweat) and you have sweeping views of the
coastline. Entrances for BLUE are off Gubinge Road. Cemetery Walk Depends on your interest but you could spend a lot of time walking through the Japanese, Chinese and Broome Cemeteries. So much history lies in this soil – best in the early morning or afternoon as there is not much shade. Look for the section where the Sisters of St John of God are buried on D’Antoine Rd – mostly Irish who first came out in 1907. Port Walk 1.5 kms This is more of a drive as the Port

Weather
Broome is a constant 30 degrees on average all year round and it’s really the minimum temperature and humidity that changes. DRY SEASON – Apr to Nov It’s winter everywhere else in the south– so it’s the best place to be. Sunny, cloudless, days, the ocean crisp, cool and everyone’s happy. During this time we don’t get any rain, though saying this usually each year in either June or July we always have one week where the weather gets a bit wet – the locals love it – we rug up in our very outdated cold weather gear and start cooking comfort food. Visitors always get surprised by how cold the nights can get and damp! Yes, that dripping, dripping you hear is not rain but condensation!

Whales
The Humpback whale to me is one of the ugliest creatures – though for some reason they stir up incredible emotions when I see them. How can they be so huge, so graceful and so mysterious? Did you know that Broome, and the Kimberley coastline, is the major highway for Humpback Whales! They spend more time up here than down south. This is where they set up their nursery for their calves to nourish them and fatten them up before they head south on the long journey to the Antarctic. Between June to October you can see them on the horizon, exploding out of the water. If you are lucky sometimes they wander into the Port area or closer into the shoreline chasing bait schools for food and showing off their young. See the Tours section for whale watching tours

Wine
Broome’s Wine Makers
118 Uniquely Broome
Julie & Geoff Weguelin moved to Broome in 2003. When they first opened The Mango Place the mango wine was made down south of Perth - they never thought they would end up producing award winning Mango Wine. Early on their wine producer decided to call it a day . They had only one week of training before being left to figure it out themselves. “In our first year of producing the mango wine we were always getting invitations to enter into competitions, so we sent our wine over to Queensland and won a silver and bronze medal. That was pretty special - it was a nice pat on the back to say that we had done something right.” says Julie We process the mangoes in October November and by that time the weather is quite unbearable. Being a small wine producer and because of limited space we can only freeze a couple of barrels of mango pulp at a time. This is required to break down the pulp so it will separate. The mangos are washed and handled one by one to go into the pulper that separates the skin, the seed and the juice. It is a very old machine, purpose built so we are lucky to have it. Mangoes are the most difficult fruit to make wine out of, it is pot luck that it separates, so that you get the clear fluid at the top. We had to buy a centrifugal machine to complete the separation process. You lose over a third of the mass to pulp and you get about 60% fluid. The process takes about 4 months. The part that is most rewarding is when you end up with a beautiful gold clear liquid. Each year we produce approximately 2,000 litres. We have spent a lot of time sourcing the small bottles we need and finding the right cartons has been an adventure. Once corks became unpopular we had to try and find the right screw caps to fit the bottles without spending thousands on a special bottle top machine. Our becoming winemakers has challenged us in many ways, though the thrill of winning a medal at the Royal Show or someone coming in especially to buy our wines because they are so unique keeps us making the next vintage!
