Where is Broome? It’s 2,300 kms from Perth, 1,800 kms from Darwin, 4 hours by plane direct to Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane. So yes, we are remote!

Welcome to Yawuru Country

Ngaji gurrjin, nyamba buru Yawuru; greetings everyone, welcome to Yawuru country. Broome is located in the heart of Yawuru country. Northward along the coast, Yawuru country extends to the middle of Willie Creek about 35 kms from Gantheaume Point. Along the southern coast, Yawuru country stretches to just below Eco Beach tourist resort. The Yawuru hinterland takes in the station country of Thangoo, Roebuck Plains and parts of Dampier Downs. Yawuru people’s northern, eastern and southern Aboriginal neighbours are Jabirr Jabirr, Nyikana/

Mangala and Karajarri. People from these neighbouring language and cultural groups continue to have close ties with Yawuru people. Yawuru country today is rich in cultural significance. Bugurrigarra is the word Yawuru people use to describe how their country was created with continuing traditional law that maintains Yawuru people’s connection to their land and sea. There are traditional songlines and sites of significance in and around Broome.

Exploring, fishing, flying, dinosaurs, plane wrecks, flora, fauna, swimming, beaches, walks, shopping, eating, interesting architecture, wilderness, desert, mango trees, multicultural community, unique history, pearling, mining, cattle export and the most important - the community of Broome. Our weather is extreme. From the dry months May through to November, to the exciting build up of the wet season before Christmas, followed by the tropical cyclonic months from January through to April. This makes Broome the ideal holiday destination for every type of person. Exploring is best in the dry season, though the wet season is a time where the weather dictates that you must relax completely and really have a holiday. We are a town with no traffic lights, lots of rounda-bouts, tropical gardens, unusual architecture,

incredible tides and the unique experience of having the sun rising and setting over the water. With a small population of approx. 18,000 people we are a vibrant metropolis in paradise. There are so many stories of people who come for a visit and never leave. That could be you! Uniquely Broome will introduce you to the many treasures we have to offer and I really hope your visit to Broome will not be your last. Relax and enjoy the sunsets!

Have you noticed that the houses don’t have letter boxes? In Broome there is no postal delivery and everyone has a post office box. Why? I think the locals like meeting at the post office for a chat and we are so transient that it suits our lifestyle.

Anastasia’s Pool Anastasia’s Pool was named after a former lighthouse keeper’s wife. Patrick Percy had his Chinese crewman, Wing Loong, concrete the bottom of a rockpool for his wife, who was crippled with arthritis. So very romantic! Far from being a mermaid-like maiden, Anastasia is said to have been obese and able to break wind at will; which she would do when she was near people she didn't like. On a 9.5m tide the different pools fill up. The location is stunning, surrounded by beautiful rock formations, overlooking the Indian Ocean. Best sunset viewing! In January 2014 a storm damaged the pool beyond repair. But don’t despair, there are other pools in the area. Do be careful as this is a dangerous and fragile area.

Bidyadanga Community Art Centre We paint from our heart and retell stories told by the old people. We call ourselves the Bidyadanga Community Artists as most of us were born and bred in this country, but some were taken away from families by missionaries to Bidyadanga to learn Kartiya (nonAboriginal) way of living.

My whimsical Broome paintings reflect my love for Broome’s history and the vibrant colours of the Kimberley. I can personalise paintings by adding people and vehicles into the scenes.

Judy creates handmade kiln glassware and dichroic jewellery - inspired by her 30 years of living in Broome and the Kimberley.

Judy makes each individual glass item from the rich vibrant colours of art glass which are hand cut, fired and polished. No two pieces are created the same. Jewellery is individually cut and fired from dichroic glass to create a piece perfect for any occasion. Her glass art makes the ideal gift or spoil yourself – exclusively created and sold here in Broome.

Throughout the years, we gained Certificate 1, II and III in Visual Arts and Contemporary Craft to equip ourselves with art techniques. The outcome of this training is to establish our art centre like the other working artists in other wellknown and established art centres. Come for a drive to visit us 180km south of Broome to view some of our works. Be sure to call before coming.

Designing Women

14

One of our hidden treasures in Broome is Nagula Jarndu Designs. This group of Indigenous women are crazy about textiles and textile design. They started off many years ago mainly producing screen printed lengths. Still focussed on textile production, they have evolved and create free flowing unique one-off designs. The artists use a block printing technique, which lends itself to creating beautifully individual designs cut from lino and polystyrene foam. They explore textures, colour, pattern and layering, overprinting onto natural base fabrics including fine cottons, linens and silks. They also produce works on paper, do silk painting and create other gorgeous textile pieces, every one a distinctive example of contemporary Indigenous art.

I decided to drop in and see what they were doing one morning - around morning tea time. Good timing as one of the women had baked some damper and there was slathers of butter and yummy jam and lively talk among the women about the designs they were working on and what colour they were going to use. to read the full story go to www.uniquelybroome.com Visit the artists at Nagula Jarndu studio workshop and shopfront at 3/12 Gregory St (enter from Pembroke Street) Broome Monday – Friday 10 – 4

Cable Beach was named because of the telegraph cable linking Broome to Java in 1889. This allowed the pearling masters to get the best shell price from Singapore. Flight of the Bats I am fascinated by the litte Red and Black Flying Foxes that camp in the mangroves near Streeter’s Jetty. Each night just after sunset, they head out from Streeter’s Jetty to feast. They have amazing eyesight and a good sense of smell so they find the best restaurants that have the nectar, pollen and fruit of the native trees. Also they love our mangoes and pawpaws. They are messy eaters and their purple ‘poo’ is an amazing paint stripper. So don’t park your car under a mango tree!

Cemeteries

Japanese & Chinese cemeteries To walk through makes me feel so sad that these people never returned to their homeland and their loved ones. Chinatown

Chinatown is the name of our main shopping area in Broome. It is the most confusing name for many visitors to Broome as I am sure you are looking for lots of Chinese restaurants. Today Chinatown is full of food, fashion, pearl jewellery and other retail shops, with three Chinese restaurants. In the early days it was full of pearling sheds, shops, opium dens, noodle houses, boarding houses, laneways and where all the Asiatics lived whilst the Europeans lived in Old Broome area. Take some time to walk down Carnarvon Street and look at the original buildings. Especially on the western side, you will notice that there are still living quarters behind the shops. Sirens of Silence

The Gibb Challenge is a socially competitive 700 kilometre bike ride raising community awareness and money for charity. In 2016 their Principal Beneficiary is Sirens of Silence supporting our triple zero heroes. This is the story of Lyn and Ian Sinclair who in 2015 created the charity Sirens of Silence – this is their challenge to help raise awareness of post traumatic stress disorder PTSD. “We were watching a program of a police officer who had suicided, his story was recorded on 000 and that touched us. It was a story that was run over 2 nights on Sunday Night and it basically chronicalled his battle with PTSD as a police officer and the impact it had on his family and culminated in him ringing 000 knowing full well that it would be recorded right up to the moment of his death. That story had a profound impact on Ian & I.

32

I was not able to be a paramedic anymore as I had injured my back, said Lyn. So I was also trying to find out where I fitted in with trying to help people. The initial idea came from a peer support page we had on Facebook which is for Ambos specifically and I invited all my ambo mates to share stories, a page where people could peer support each other, cause that is where we felt the change needed to start from the bottom. That grew and we had another suicide a week later (a friend of mine). Where to go from here? How about a Charity? for the full story go to ....... www.uniquelybroome.com.au

DRY SEASON – May to Oct It’s winter everywhere else in the south – so it’s the best place to be. Sunny, cloudless days, the ocean crisp, cool and everyone’s happy. During this time we usually don’t get any rain – although saying this each year in either June or July we always have one week where the weather gets a bit wet – the locals love it – we rug up in our very outdated cold weather gear and start cooking comfort food. Visitors always get surprised by how cold the nights can get and damp! Yes, that drip, dripping you hear is not rain but condensation! WET SEASON – Nov to April If you want to experience a tropical climate – then Broome is it. The frangapanis are blooming, the cicadas are clicking, the green frogs are mating, the ocean is warm, the sky is overcast and Roebuck

Bay looks stunning. The storms come quick and fast. It’s better than fireworks and it’s my favourite time of the year – too warm and sticky to do anything else but relax, watch sunsets, drink gin and tonics and read a book. SIX SEASONS The Aboriginal people say that there are 6 seasons. Marul – April, the hot period after the wet season Wirralbu – May, easterly winds bring a cool breeze and cool nights. Barrgana – Jun to Aug, the dry season – when the wind blows strongly from the east and fog appears. Nights and mornings become even cooler. Wirlburu – Sept, westerley winds. Warmer nights. I love September! Larja – Oct to Nov, the build up to the wet season, when the days are very warm and the humidity is high – everyone starts to go Troppo! Mankala – Dec-Mar, the wet season. Sweaty & possible cyclones. Weather Bureau each day @ around 1pm releases a weather balloon!

Dinosaurs

38

Dinosaur footprints of the Megalosauropus broomensis can be seen at Gantheaume Point. The reef in this area is fragile and the footprints can only be viewed on a low tide of 2.16 m or less. A plaster copy of the tracks is conveniently located at the top of the cliffs and decreases the impact of visitors on the reef. There is no signage as to where the footprints are and you need to be sure footed and have a keen eye. The tracks are 115 to 120 million years old and extend from south of Broome all the way to Cape Leveque, 200 kms to the north. There are tracks of meat-eaters related to the famous tyrannosaurus and of possibly the largest dinosaur of all, an immense sauropod which left behind a print measuring 1.7m across. The

tracks found in the area prove that all the main groups of dinosaurs inhabited Australia. There were the huge sauropods - meat-eating theropods, armoured ankylosaurus - vegetarian ornithopods and even the spectacular stegosaurus with its strange fin of bony plates and spiked tail. Unfortunately,

we can discover nothing more about the stegosaurus tracks because they were hacked out of the rock and stolen in 1996. They were the only evidence we

had that Stegosaurus existed in Australia. This is a good read - The Dinosaur Dealers by John Long

Entertainment

I am always amazed at the talent and entertainment we get in this small town. To get your Broome experience, buy The Broome Advertiser - that has the gig guide and information on anything that is happening on the local scene. You cannot get bored if you like a bit of night life. The pubs and bars - Roey Hotel , Mercure Inn, Divers Tavern, Mangrove Hotel, Town Beach Bar all have different things happening on different nights and there is a real Broome music culture happening. Broome has refurbished and extended the old Civic Centre building and so look out for any entertainment that might be happening at the Civic Centre.

Broome Turf Club

Broome horse racing has literally evolved out of the dust over the past decade and is now recognised as the ‘rising star’ of Australian racing. Facilities at Broome are as good as any in the state. Large trees and shade sails complement the open style facilities to take advantage of the never-fail weather of the dry season. A day at the Broome races is an experience rather than a race day. The colourful social scene, with entertainment throughout the day, is an attraction as big and as fast as the furious racing. Those who have attended the Broome races always return, and the weather report is always ‘fine and good’. You can purchase a season pass if you wish or just come for a day. Shinju Matsuri Festival of the Pearl The annual Shinju Matsuri (Japanese for “Festival of the Pearl”) originated from three cultural festivals – Japanese Obon Matsuri, Malaysian Hari Merdeka, Independence Day from British rule in 1957, and the Chinese Hang Seng. The festival united these cultural groups. From these original cultural celebrations the Shinju Matsuri then became a festival that celebrated Broome and encouraged tourism. A world-class festival in one of Australia's most unique and spectacular towns, events include the waking of Sammy the Dragon, touching tributes to the town’s pearling history and legends, a float parade through the historic streets of Chinatown, Carnival of Nations, Dragon Boat Races, Gala Ball and an impressive closing ceremony concert culminating in a concert and fireworks display. Everyone worries about what to wear and what to pack when going on holiday. My advice is to throw out the high-heeled shoes (except for the Race days in Broome) and use your pantihose to tie up the tomatoes in the garden or just don’t bring them to Broome! For the guys - no more suits, ties and those dreadful shoes. They call it “Kimberley Casual” and you can get away with almost anything! Broome’s fashion shops reflect our all-year-round summer. You can always find something special to wear whilst on holidays and when you go home everyone will say “where did you get that?”. So don’t pack those horrible dark, heavy clothes that we all tend to wear in the southern climates and enjoy the freedom of fashion in Broome.

Step into the scented exotica that is Betty’s Frock Shop, owned and run by an old Broome family and evoking the colour and rich heritage of Asiatic Broome.

See a stunning range of smart casual clothing made of natural fibres – cotton, linen and bamboo, that feel great to wear.

Amongst the Oriental furnishings, you will find gifts, jewellery & accessories from all over the world - Portuguese soaps, Indian tinware, Chinese tea sets and Japanese hair pins, as well as hand dyed squash hats, decorative silks, custom made handbags and colourful leather wallets.

Labels - Blazer, Coast Clothing, genuine Hawaiian shirts, Adrift, Inti, See Saw Linen, Seven Sisters, Gordon Smith, Sequel & Personelle, Rider, Ipanema, and Shoes with Jewels.

Due to the tropical climate and relaxed Broome lifestyle, our handpicked collection features natural fibres with an emphasis on lightweight silk, linen and cotton fabrics.

Swim - Bike - Run Broome Tri Club

Last year I went to the Leading Edge Computers Cable Beach Triathlon as an observer only! I am always interested when something new is happening in Broome. Especially when I found out that a small business had pledged to support this event for the next 3 years. I went and had a chat with Nicola Walters from Leading Edge to find out more.

“After my children had got to a manageable age I wanted something that I could train towards as I know we all say, I am going to get fit again, or jog again but doing that is not always easy. You need a goal. I felt if I had a competition that I could train towards it would get me motivated enough to get myself fit again to do a Triathlon. So by hosting this event in Broome it is giving people a goal that they can aim towards. An event on a professional level that people would take

seriously. If it is taken seriously people will train for it, if it is just a club event then sometimes the push is not there in the same way. I wanted to see the Tri Club grow and as a member I felt it was waning with enthusiasm and membership. My aim is for my sponsorship is to help it grow and create an official event that people can train towards on an annual basis. My sponsorship is over a 3year period and I am hoping to see the Tri Club and the Broome Visitor Centre in a partnership so the event can grow to making Broome a sports destination during winter. This is one event that can show that Broome is a fantastic place for people, a winter destination for sports, a beautiful beach, blue skies, clean air and great weather. Dee I was about seven when I started catching Brim and flathead with my Mum and Dad on the east coast. My passion grew from people I met along the way. David Green was a big influence on my fishing I met him when I was ten. He taught me about barra fishing and we fished tournaments together. Mel I am from Bunbury and spent my younger years fishing for bream and crabs in the Collie River. As a child we spent holidays fishing in Shark Bay & Kalbarri but since moving to Broome 12 years ago this is when my fishing passion really kicked off. You can find me fishing almost every weekend either in the creek or up the river. Kelly The second I could walk I have fished. I love it, I have an obsessive compulsive family – so its in the blood. I first fished in the Billfish comp in 2008. We had a team call the Minnies Me’s, me, my brother, Dylan Lockhart and Wokkie. Jenifer I first learnt to swim before I fished. Dad or Grandpa would put a life jacket on me and tie a rope and let me hang out of the back of the boat. Ever since I was a little girl Dad had a boat. We used to go to Exmouth a couple of times a year to fish, I really loved Exmouth. So 7 years ago I arrived in Broome for the fishing and lifestyle.

Flying Boat Wrecks

This photo was taken at dawn

It’s an eerie feeling walking out on the mudflats of Roebuck Bay when the tide is at its lowest to see the wrecks of the Catalinas and Dorniers that were ‘strafed’ on the 3rd March 1942. Nine Japanese aircraft attacked 15 flying boats that were refuelling in Roebuck Bay. These planes, belonging to Qantas,

the Royal Australian Airforce, the Royal Netherlands Navy and the US Navy, were transferring mainly women and children refugees from Java to southern states of Australia. The records are sketchy so noone knows really how many lives were lost - approximately 80. All were fleeing from Java

as the Japanese were invading that area and Broome was a refuelling stop for the planes. A good book to read if you want to know more is ‘Broome’s One Day War’ by Mervyn Prime. Available from the Broome Museum. Remember that the wrecks are living graves and not to walk

too close to the remains. It is a very historical site and apparently one of the most accessible wreck sites in the world. The wrecks are visible on a low tide of one metre or less. See the Walks section for the Flying Boat Walk. Map Ref O14

Pearl Meat

Pearl meat is the adductor muscle of the pearl oyster, Pinctada Maxima. It is a by-product of pearl production and is a highly regarded delicacy. Once the oyster is no longer used for producing pearls the adductor muscle is removed. As only small quantities of pearl meat tend to be harvested annually it is an expensive commodity, selling in Broome for around $110 per kilogram fresh. The white pearl meat can be eaten raw and is described as sweet with a hint of salt. It is similar to abalone or scallop in flavour. With a delicate flavour and texture, pearl meat needs no more than a quick sear to cook. It is thought to have aphrodisiac properties - seems most seafood has. Bon appetite!

Don & The Big Issue

The Big Issue magazine is a fortnightly, independent magazine that is sold on the streets by homeless, marginalised and disadvantage people. We are an independent, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and creating job opportunities for these people. Simply put, we help people help themselves (from the Big Issue website) “My late partner was from Broome and I decided to come up here to be a bit closer to her, visit her grave. Down in Perth was too far away; at least now if I want to go up to the cemetery I can, especially for things like birthdays. Losing your partner hurts a lot and being so far away from where my partner was buried really bugged me. So I moved up to Broome in 2012 and started selling the Big Issue. It has given me more self-confidence and it is good because I get out and meet people. If it weren’t for that I would sit home playing on the computer. This way I get out and mingle and interact with people and that is very important. Once you get older it is good to have people to talk to otherwise you vegetate and I know a lot of people who retired went home sat down and 6 months later they have died, they were not doing anything. to read the full story go to www.uniquelybroome.com

recipe courtesy Rachel Beadle Crust 1 cup hazelnuts 3 cups organic dried coconut 1 cup medjool dates pitted 1/8 tsp salt ¼ cup melted coconut oil Filling 3 cups cashews 2 cups medjool dates pitted 1/8 tsp salt 1 ¼ cups melted coconut oil 3 cups water 1 cup lemon juice 4 Tbsp lecithin granules 4 Tbsp agave syrup or rice malt syrup (N.B.: For a thinner filling layer you could half this filling mixture.) Method Grind hazelnuts in blender until fine. Mix with all the other crust ingredients and press into a large spring form cake tin to form a base. Place in fridge to harden (30 mins). Blend all filling ingredients until smooth. Pour on top of crust. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours before serving. Tip: Keep in freezer. When served it is like a delicious cheesecake ice cream!

Take some time out whilst walking through Chinatown on one of our wonderful sunny days and drop into The Ice Creamery for a huge selection of natural, real fruit icecream (no preservatives/no eggs) to suit anyone’s tastebuds plus fruit swirl, real fruit smoothies and fresh fruit juices that will satisfy any craving! We are proud to be able to supply a “paddock to plate” product. The beef that we sell is sourced from our cattle stations around the Kimberley. The cattle are grass fed which leads to a healthier and more flavoursome product.

•250g fresh pearl meat •1/2 bunch spring onions •2 red chillies, sliced finely •10cm piece ginger (7-8cm for juice and a tablespoon of julienne slices) •60ml mirin •30ml rice vinegar •30ml healthy boy soy sauce •Pinch sugar, salt, white pepper •Coriander leaves •cooking oil

Our shop is now in its third year and the support of locals and tourists has been fantastic. Our beef, lamb and goat can be found on many Broome restaurant menus. Don’t forget to try our famous Kimberley Freerange ‘beef pie’.

Marinate pearl meat in fresh ginger juice (pureed or grated fresh ginger and squeeze out juice through tea towel).

Incredible Edible

Incredible Edible is a community initiative that aims to increase access to locally grown food, share knowledge and skills and bring people together. On the 1st Saturday of each month there is a fresh food share at Broome Circle House on the corner Weld and Fredericks Streets from 9 – 10am. This is the story of how Jenni Lowe came up with the idea. “I lived in London for 4½ years before moving to Broome to the position of Executive Officer at Broome Circle. I found the produce in the local supermarket of poor quality and I never seemed to get to the markets early enough to get the veges. I discovered the Broome Growers guide and started growing my own. I am not a fantastic green thumb but I did end up with too many eggplants and then heaps of tomatoes.

60

I went to a workshop presentation on Community Development initiatives and was shown the Incredible Edible TED talk. Incredible Edible

started in the UK in a town called Todmorden – it is a mining community in the mid north. They planted in railway stations, footpaths and encouraged people to take what was growing. It started a conversation in their community that I felt was lacking in Broome. I found out we had an Organic Growers Association in Broome so I went to one of their casual meetings in the park. I put to them that I was looking at a way to benefit Circle House as we needed to expand our membership base to support our crèche and bring in new families that would normally not engage our services. I thought that Incredible Edible could facilitate that by creating a food share for all those gardeners that have excess produce, also to exchange information on gardening and to meet on a regular basis at Circle House”. for the full story go to www.uniquelybroome.com

12 Mile

This settlement is 20 kms from Broome on the main highway. In the 1970s it was land allocated by the government to be used for agricultural purposes. Today it is a mixture of mango farms, cafes, organic herbs and vegie gardens, a turf farm, plant nurseries and for some people just a quiet place out of town to live. Our vegetables are grown at Kirby’s Vegies and brought into the markets each Saturday. This is where you can visit Wallis Mangoes who create their mango products for the markets. The 12 Mile Bird Park is a tourist attraction and worth visiting. Drop into The Mango Place – Kanagae Estate on Kanagae Rd for a taste of mango wine, mango smoothies and visit their shop full of mango products. I love a Sunday drive out to 12 Mile, just to get out on the open road and out of Broome.

Flora & Fauna

Animals in Broome are not in your face. They love to hide and really only come out in the early morn, on dusk or at night. I started creating this list of creatures I have come across in the Kimberley - we have an abundance - you just have to LOOK. Coucal Pheasants – over the road in the bush. Tata lizards (Ganada) - it always seems that it is waving at you Frilled-neck

lizard - during the wet season on the road Whales - between June - October Dolphins - every time we go out on the boat Sea Snake - walking along the beach Mud Crab - Dampier Creek Lemon & Tiger Sharks in the ocean Processionary catepillars - in May sometimes on the road Bats - in the night sky every night Geckos - in my house Goanna (Bungarra) - in my back yard Merten’s Water Monitor - at the caravan park in

Broome Blue Tongue Lizards in my garden Salt water crocodiles - at Malcolm Douglas Wildlife Park Wallabies - near the Port Dingoes - at Barred Creek Northern Quolls - at Freshwater Cove Green Tree Frogs - in my outdoor bathroom Mice - not native but I found them in my pool Snakes - always at a distance! Fish of many varieties - when I go fishing

Yuen Wing General Store The Yuen Family

The list of flora is endless and I am not an expert. A great reference book is Broome & Beyond - it has everything you need to know. Check out the Broome Libary for a copy. Look around and you will notice the Boab, Jigal tree (the Indigenous call it the Mother-inLaw tree as custom states that a man and his mother-in-law should not look or interact with each other) the leaves face away from each other. Gubinge (high in vitamin C). Rosella (makes the best jam) and the mangrove system around the bay. We have an amazing climate that allows us to grow native flora and to also have tropical gardens - the best of both worlds! photo Mulla Mulla on the Dampier Peninsula in the month of June.

Our grandfather came to Broome in the 1940's and worked as a pearl diver. He established a small shop (where Shekki is located) which sold the basics. All the family lived on premises at the back of the shop. My parents didn't arrive until the late 1960's and my father took a job as a pearl diver, while the rest of the family managed the shop which was built in the late 1960’s. We owned the land behind our store (Skyalla Lounge Bar) which was then a chinese restaurant. Our store on the Carnarvon Street side used to be a shop and Chinese takeaway. We sold dairy goods, vegetables and frozen meat as well.

Jewels from the Sea

R CHE VOU

I never gave a second thought to pearls until I came to Broome. Somehow you get the bug and must have a pearl.

Put some time aside for some serious pearl shopping – it’s fun! The range is huge, designs are different and Broome is the place to buy a pearl. We do have the most beautiful and largest pearls in the world! Make sure you visit the many pearl shops in Chinatown or visit the Courthouse Markets on a Saturday. You will hear over and over the following terms – so become familiar. A little knowledge is good – so you don’t become overwhelmed. Have an enjoyable shopping experience! Take home a pearl. South Sea Pearls – from the Pinctada Maxima the largest oyster in the world – this is the animal that Broome pearls are grown in. Freshwater Pearls – from other countries, smaller in size and less valuable – still beautiful. Baroque – an irregular shaped pearl – very fashionable. Keshi – a pearl formed naturally or as a result of an implanted nucleus being rejected.

The five virtues of a pearl: Colour –

you can almost get the subtle colours of the rainbow although silver white is my favourite. Complexion – bit like us, smooth complexion – beautiful pearl. Lustre – does it shine? Shape – a perfect sphere is the most valuable, though like all of us, shape is a personal thing. Size – we all say size counts!

Lurujarri Trail

In 1987, the late Paddy Roe OAM, with the support of his Goolarabooloo Aboriginal community, established the Lurujarri Heritage Trail. A 9 day (80km) cultural walking journey along the Song Cycle between

Minyirr (Broome) and Minarriny (Yellow River). The body of cultural knowledge that the old people have passed on is preserved and kept alive within this Song Cycle. It connects specific sites (Law Grounds) in a continuous linear system up the coast of the Dampier Peninsula. Along the trail the same camping places are used as have been for millennia, the same reefs fished. The middens in the dunes are thick with remnants of past feeds, spear

heads, charcoal flints and grinding stones. The Goolarabooloo people are still actively engaged in looking after country despite living within a western world that would have them sell it for the greater economic resources of the nation. They believe that connection with country and culture is the base of one’s true sense of identity, spiritual and physical health and self-esteem and continue to share their understanding.

The Rowley Shoals is a group of three coral atols approx. 360km due west of Broome. You are surrounded by water and a tiny, tiny island of sand. I was going through my photos and came across this beautiful photo of the Rowley Shoals. I went a few years ago with some girl friends

and 16 blokes. Yes, it was fun! If you love the water, scuba diving and snorkelling is definitely something to put on your must do list. Acccess by extended charter boat only.

You can never have too many mangoes. Though the problem is they all seem to get ripe all at once. I love making mango chips they last forever. Mango Chips The mangoes need to be ripe but not over ripe. Firm! Cut off the cheeks of the mango and remove the skin. Slice with a really sharp knife no thicker than 5mm. You will need to have a dehydrater. The time varies but usually taking about 8 hours at 55 degrees celcius. Wallis Mangoes Incorporating The Chutney Shed

There is a taste for everyone from fruit vinegars, green mango chutneys, dried mango, gourmet mango conserves to Wild Hibiscus jams, syrups and fruits. We have lots of different chilli products including Mango & Chilli Sauce, Chilli Belachan & Chilli Chutney and Red Fire Chilli for the chilli lover. Bidyadanga Emus

I know nothing about football (yes I am an Aussie) so I thought my education was lacking as I know the footy season in Broome is very popular. A friend of mine was going down to Bidyadanga (180kms south of Broome) to help out with the umpiring and I took the opportunity to go and watch a real Kimberley football match.

78

The football match was between Bidyadanga Emus on their home turf and Cable Beach Football Club. I found out whilst talking to some enthusiastic spectators that they had not played a season match at Bidyadanga for over a decade. The spectators where mainly made up of residents from the Bidyadanga

Community and a few like me who had come to see this special match. Well I was surprised. The pace was furious - what a riveting spectator support. I ended up yelling with the rest of them as the teams clashed on the field. I could not believe how quick they moved - definitely better to watch it live that on TV. So I am now a convert and when I go passed the Haynes Oval on Frederick St on a Saturday, I might stop and spend a couple of hours watching some really top athletes. For your information Bidyadanga means - the place where the emus drink!

Music

Like the lapping sounds of Roebuck Bay tides, the rattle of seeds of a Poinciana tree or the wet season barks of our favourite geckos, Broome music often reflects its environment. It has evolved like any ancient songline over the ages and some of Broomes’ music – the Pigram Brothers, Kuckles or the Mary G Band – may reference or even contain these timeless rhythmical riffs. Music in Broome today has something for everyone whether you love pop, bluegrass, electronic or country and western. The Broome music scene can offer the experience to match the magical nature of this location. Venues around town proudly support all genres and we are often treated to the wonders of opera, classical,

folk, Indigenous and world music. Some of the classic Broome musical experiences include Murphy’s legendary Tuesday night jam sessions, didjeridoo as the full moon rises over Roebuck Bay. Anywhere you can catch a Pigram playing from their own amazing catalogue or treating the lovers of Jimmy Chi’s Bran Nu Dae. You can also catch the best of our local musos in the corner of a café or bar, with the chance of seeing an emerging supertstar developing their trade…true! For up to date gigs and music guide grab a copy of the local paper …most importantly be prepared for something special. local musician Paul Boon

Streeter’s Jetty

Was the hub of the pearling industry in the early 1900s, when the luggers came in to drop off their shell and the rail track ran along the jetty for offloading all the pearl shell. Walk along the jetty when the tide is high, or in the early morning, and listen to the sound of the bats in the mangroves. The jetty is being restored to its former glory. This is the best place for plane spotting. Photo taken on extreme high tide (spring tide).

Tides

The tides in Broome are among the biggest in the world. The rise and fall of the tide creates a beautiful rhythm to the day and is an integral part of our lives in Broome. We are on a peninsula surrounded by water and it affects our lives constantly. To go walking along the beach, boating, fishing, looking for dinosaur footprints or finding the Flying Boat wrecks you really do need to have an understanding of how the tides work. The tide moves in for six hours and then out for six hours. Each week it alternates between a NEAP tide (small movement of water) and a SPRING tide (large movement of water). In and out it goes all controlled by the moon.

Learn how to read the tide chart – the number on the left is the time of day, the number on the right is the measurement of the tide. Take the highest number away from the smallest and this gives you a good indication of the movement of water. Neap tide has 2 to 3 metres of movement and a spring tide has 6 to10 metres of movement. You may notice a difference in high tide on a neap is early-mid morning and early-mid evening, whilst high tide on a Spring is midday and midnight! Yes, I know it is a bit complex but I assure you that if you get to understand the tides - you will always be safe.

Johnny Chi Lane is a small laneway that connects Carnarvon St with Dampier Tce. On the walls of the shops along the lane you’ll find descriptions and stories of Broome's early days. There are 20 of them all up, starting at the Carnarvon St end.

The stories take you all the way from the days when the first ships landed in Broome, through the whole history of the pearling industry and all its ups and downs, WWII, to the advent of tourism and present day Broome. Map Ref E5

Snubfin Dolphin Roebuck Bay is home to over 100 Snubfins, apparently the largest known group in Australia. Right on our doorstep. I can’t believe I didn’t know that we had a new species of dolphins in Roebuck Bay that only got recognised by scientists in 2005. Isn’t that incredible that in our world there are still new discoveries. They really look so different – they are similar to the Irrawaddy dolphin. A big boofy head – that only a mother would love and they seem quite shy. They are not speedy like other dolphins – they bob around on the surface, gliding along slowly feeding. Probably hoping not to bump into anything, as the Roebuck Bay water is that beautiful azure blue with very low visibility, hence their large head for good sonar abilities. They have a quirky way of fishing. Spit Fishing! They spit some water in front of the fish and the fish turns - viola right into their mouth. So they are very intelligent too! I heard a Broomer, which usually is true that David Attenborough is coming to study them sometime this year. So look out for him! There is lots of footage if you Google it and that will definitely get you excited to come out and meet our new friends. www.marineparks.dpaw.wa.gov.au look up Australian snubfin dolphin under Fun Facts.

The Bluebone’s Harem

by Jason Fowler, Environs Kimberley

Big Bluebone are the fish equivalent of Playboy magazine’s Hugh Hefner. They are smart, good looking, old and have a whole harem of beautiful young ladies to look after. This is a big job as they have to guard their patch of reef from other wayward males whilst keeping their ladies safe and content.

100

Despite all the bright colours and aggressive posturing the fishy Hugh Hefner has one embarassing flaw, small testes! This means Hugh can only produce enough sperm for one or two females per day. Considering they spawn repeatedly all wet season, Hugh is kept very busy

keeping up to his ladies constant egg production. The ladies seem to get the good side of the bargain. They hang out together, go shopping for pearl shell and crab, and don’t have to worry about unwanted advances as Hugh is constantly looking out for them. Even when they settle down at night in a concealed crack in the reef and wrap themselves in a protective slimy goo, Hugh will be ever present. What happens if fisherfolk catch and kill Hugh? Pandemonium? Actually the largest female in the harem will immediately transition to male and a new Hugh takes centre stage. Read the full love story at www.uniquelybroome.com

Turtles Turtle nesting season is from 1st Oct to 28th Feb. During that time on the beaches around Broome there is lots of activity at night with the turtles coming in to lay their eggs and hatchlings returning to the sea. For many years they’ve had to share this intimate process with the 4WDs. Finally they are getting some peace as the Cable Beach Amphitheatre vehicle access is CLOSED at night to vehicles from 8pm - 6am. It is also closed two hours either side of the high tide when it is nine metres or greater - this is for your safety. A gate has been installed and will be locked - so don’t get stuck on the beach. All other times of the year access is open.

TURTLE FACTS Only 1 in 1000 hatchlin gs will survive to adulthood  Floating Sy ndrome is a common problem  6 of the 7 spe ices of sea turtles are threatened or endangered  Can live to 10 0 years  All released tur tles are tagged  Sea turles can hold their breath for hours underwa ter 

I hope this information makes you decide not to drive on the beach during October-February • Turtles nest at the top of the beach just above high tide mark. • Vehicles damage turtle nests, compacting sand and crunching nests. • Wheel ruts can prevent hatchlings making their way to the water • Vehicle lights disturb and confuse hatchlings. • Flatback Turtles are the main nesting turtles on Cable Beach. • The Flatback Turtle is threatened and protected under Western Australian legislation.

Jan’s Joeys

At the Courthouse Markets on a Saturday you will see the stall of Kimberley Wildlife. Usually there are a few joeys in their bags and they sell merchandise to fundraise so these joeys can be rehabilitated back to the wild. Jan Martin and her small dedicated team plus volunteers saved hundred of lives of all sorts of wildlife. I visited Jan at her home to see how the joeys were going. “I have not worked out the exact cost of how much a joey costs from the time I get it to the time it is released but a wallaby could be up to $400 - $500 and if I get a big red kangaroo then is could be closer to $1000 because they are bigger and you have them for up to 2 years before they are released. This includes all the food, milk, vet bills, power etc. with no costing of my time. We make our own pouches, have to have blankets and they have their own dedicated freezer. They mainly eat lucerne chaff, sweet potato, carrots, corn and apples. The milk comes from Sydney and is in a powder form. So I will order up to 40kgs at a time, there is different gradings of milk. As they grow their proteins and lipids change and so the formula changes. I have a few joeys that are blind, usually from trauma. I take them to OPSM to get their eyes checked. They have the equipment to see right at the back of the eye”.

Whales

Did you know that Broome and the Kimberley coastline, is the major highway for Humpback Whales? This is where they set up their nursery for their calves to nourish them and fatten them up before they head south on the long journey to the Antarctic. Between June and October you can see them on the horizon, or sometimes they wander into the port area or closer into the shoreline chasing bait schools for food and showing off their young. See the Tours section for whale watching tours.
