Welcome to Yawuru Country
Ngaji gurrjin, nyamba buru Yawuru; greetings everyone, welcome to Yawuru country. Broome is located in the heart of Yawuru country. Northward along the coast, Yawuru country extends to the middle of Willie Creek about 35 kms from Gantheaume Point. Along the southern coast, Yawuru country stretches to just below Eco Beach tourist resort. The Yawuru hinterland takes in the station country of Thangoo, Roebuck Plains and parts of Dampier Downs. Yawuru people’s northern, eastern and southern Aboriginal neighbours are Jabirr Jabirr, Nyikana/

Broome
Yawuru country today is rich in cultural significance. Bugurrigarra is the word Yawuru people use to describe how their country was created with continuing traditional law that maintains Yawuru people’s connection to their land and sea. There are traditional songlines and sites of significance in and around Broome.

We have no traffic lights, lots of roundabouts, tropical gardens, unusual architecture, incredible tides and the unique experience of having the sun rising and setting over the water. With a small multi-cultural population of around18,000 people we are a vibrant town in paradise. There are so many stories of people who came for a visit and never left. That could be you! You never get to know a place unless you stay a long time and immerse yourself into the community.
I hope this book encourages you to explore Broome, say hi to the locals that live here. The majority of the businesses in these pages are owner-operated so you have the opportunity to meet people that live here. Being on holiday to me is about finding the essence of the place you are visiting. My hope for you is that a little bit of Broome rubs off on you. Relax and enjoy the sunsets!

Have you noticed that the houses don’t have letterboxes? In Broome there is no postal delivery and everyone has a post office box. Why? I think the locals like meeting at the post office for a chat and we are so transient that it suits our lifestyle.

On the Buses with Robyn
‘I have my regular passengers that come every year in the dry. There is a lady that is 103 and her daughter. They have been coming since I started driving the buses. When she was a little girl they came to Broome around the 1920’s on the Stateships as her father was the captain and she’s been coming to Broome ever since. I have been driving the buses for over 14 years – a sense of humour is a must – I have so much fun’. says Robyn For the complete story go to www.uniquelybroome.com (Kimberley Stories)

ART & CRAFT Bidyadanga Community Art Centre We paint from our heart and retell stories told by the old people. We call ourselves the Bidyadanga Community Artists as most of us were born and bred in this country, but some were taken away from families by missionaries to Bidyadanga to learn Kartiya (nonAboriginal) way of living. We also have our nanna and grands from the desert. They came out between 30-40 years ago. Not a long time ago. Throughout the years, we gained Certificate 1, II and III in Visual Arts and Contemporary Craft to equip ourselves with art techniques. The outcome of this training is to establish our art centre like the working artists in other well-known and established art centres. Come for a drive to visit us 180km south of Broome to view some of our works. Be sure to call before coming. It takes a lot of love and enthusiasm to bring the dream of a successful arts cooperative to reality. During the past 16 years, The Broome Factory has blossomed into an ever-changing cooperative arts centre, promoting Broome artists, artisans and local materials in regular displays, special exhibitions and activities. Our workshop and gallery complex in the Light Industrial Area resonates with the pride and joy of creativity and artistic expression.
My whimsical Broome paintings reflect my love for Broome’s history and the vibrant colours of the Kimberley. I can personalise paintings by adding people and vehicles into the scenes.
Judy creates handmade kiln glassware and dichroic jewellery – inspired by her 30 years of living in Broome and the Kimberley.
Angela Bakker was born and grew up in Africa. After training as a potter and print maker in England, she moved to Australia where she taught Art and Pottery and exhibited her own work.

Shibori Broome
Short St Gallery
Liz Janney I started my journey into Shibori at Broome TAFE. It was just meant to be a short course and now has turned into an obsession. I love the feeling when you open a piece of material that you have dyed to see if the pattern that you wanted to create appears. It is always a thrill. Shibori is the Japanese word for a variety of ways of embellishing textiles by shaping cloth and securing it before dyeing. The word comes from the verb root shiboru, ‘to wring, squeeze, press’. I use cotton, silk and linen to create a range of scarves, tea towels, pillow cases, table runners and place mats. I also have lengths of material for the sewer in us and sample sizes for the crazy quilter. Indigo dye is the preferred dye that I use as I am a bit of a blue person. Sometimes I am at the Courthouse Markets or contact me to see my range. lizjanney@wn.com.au Facebook: shiboribroome

Lurujarri Trail
I talked to Jen Hall who, with her sister Kath walked the Lurujarri Trail in October 2016 with the Goolaraboo mob. Jen was particularly interested to learn more about the Aboriginal culture as she lives in Broome and works with Indigenous youth. I asked her if this experience delivered everything she wanted. Her answer was no‌. but it gave her something else.
A coastal strip of sand dune, paperbark scrub, high tide estuaries and creeks. The walk takes you on a journey to see this country but it also takes you to find a new pace and a way of seeing. For the full story of Jen’s experience please go to www.uniquelybroome.com (Kimberley Stories)

Beaches
Cable Beach was named because of the telegraph cable linking Broome to Java in 1889. The 22 kms of beach is a favourite spot for the early morning walker, or to watch the sunset and the camels. In the heat of the day, hire a chair and umbrella from The Beach Hut and you will really feel that you are on holiday. It is the best way to enjoy the beach in luxury.
You can throw off the worries of the world (clothes) and mix it with the camels, cars, the odd bicycle and dressed person.

Kimberley Wild Gubinge This northern Australian native bush plum (Terminalia ferdinandiana) is known as Gubinge or Madoorr by the Bardi people of the West Kimberley Coast. Often called the Kakadu Plum, it is scientifically proven to have the highest natural source of Vitamin C on Planet Earth as well as large amounts of antioxidants, fibre and plant based Omega 3 and 6 oils. Used for thousands of years by Indigenous peoples as a fresh staple in the Wet Season for nutrition and medicine, it is fast becoming Australia’s native superfood and medicine. KWG wild harvest the fruit from the pristine Dampier Peninsula Coast in the Kimberley W.A. and produce a seedfree fruit powder that can be taken daily or used as a skin medicine. KWG is situated in the heartlands of the native orchards and our fruit is processed within 24 hours of harvest ensuring the freshest product and a low carbon footprint. KWG is an Indigenous owned and managed company meaning the profits flow back into our community and region.

Japanese & Chinese cemeteries To walk through makes me feel so sad that these people never returned to their homeland and their loved ones. Across the road is Taiji Road – this is named because a lot of the Japanese pearl divers came from this area in Japan – Taiji is Broome’s ‘sister city’. Map Ref N11 Broome cemetery Truly this is a meeting and resting place of many different peoples and religions who have lived, worked and died here. Tourists often overlook the Broome cemetery but there are many historical graves including Sisters of St John of God who have a wonderful graveyard section. These Irish Sisters arrived 1907 and didn’t go home. Explore and you will find other Broome personalities in the cemetery that you’ve read about. Chinatown
Chinatown is the name of our main shopping area in Broome. It is the most confusing name for many visitors to Broome as I am sure you are looking for lots of Chinese restaurants. Today Chinatown is full of food, fashion, pearl jewellery and other retail shops, with three Chinese restaurants. In the early days it was full of pearling sheds, shops, opium dens, noodle houses, boarding houses, laneways and where all the Asiatics lived whilst the Europeans lived in Old Broome area. Take some time to walk down Carnarvon Street and look at the original buildings. Especially on the western side, you will notice that there are still living quarters behind the shops. Drop into Sun Pictures – the oldest operating outdoor picture theatre gardens in the world!

Dampier Peninsula Communities At each of the communities along the Peninsula it is protocol to visit the Community Office or shop and ask permission to visit. Some of the communities ask you to purchase a Day Pass or charge a fee. You may be given a handy map of the area so you don’t miss out on the best sights to see, and receive information about the community and any possible camping grounds. Your trip to the Dampier Peninsula is all about culture! Beagle Bay Community Beagle Bay is home of the Nyul Nyul people who are the traditional owners of this area. It is famous for its unique Sacred Heart Church with its pearl shell altar built by the Pallottine monks and local Indigenous residents in 1917. If you have seen the movie Bran Nue Dae you will recognise the altar. It is worth having a look at, there is a shop if you need any supplies. Lombadina Community A tranquil community which is home to the Bardi people, surrounded by white sandy beaches. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday you can purchase bread from their woodfired oven at their General Store open 8am – 11am and 1pm to 3.30pm. They have selected accommodation, an Art & Craft centre plus the famous paperbark Church – Christ the King Church, built from local bush timber.
Djarindjin Community This is right next door to Lombadina Community. It has a General Store. One Arm Point Community Located at the tip of the Dampier Peninsula, One Arm Point Community, or Ardyaloon as it is called in Bardi, is home to approximately 400 people. The community is surrounded by sensitive coastal areas and mangrove systems and is a great place to experience the massive tidal water movements of the King Sound. The Bardi Jawi people are strongly connected to the salt water and have a rich culture and traditions passed down from their ancestors who lived on the surrounding islands and the mainland. The Ardyaloon Store is well stocked and open from Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm, Saturday 9am till 11.30am. On the right hand side before the roundabout, fuel is available 24/7. All major debit cards accepted. Fuel cards are also available at the Store. Visit the Ardyaloon Hatchery – to learn about the community’s trochus fishery tradition.

Dinosaurs
38
Dinosaur footprints of the Megalosauropus broomensis can be seen at Gantheaume Point. The reef in this area is fragile and the footprints can only be viewed on a low tide of 2.16 m or less. A plaster copy of the tracks is conveniently located at the top of the cliffs and decreases the impact of visitors on the reef. There is no signage as to where the footprints are and you need to be sure footed and have a keen eye. The tracks are 115 to 120 million years old and extend from south of Broome all the way to Cape Leveque, 200 kms to the north. There are tracks of meat-eaters related to the famous tyrannosaurus and of possibly the largest dinosaur of all, an immense sauropod which left behind a print measuring 1.7m across. The
tracks found in the area prove that all the main groups of dinosaurs inhabited Australia. There were the huge sauropods – meat-eating theropods, armoured ankylosaurus – vegetarian ornithopods and even the spectacular stegosaurus with its strange fin of bony plates and spiked tail. Unfortunately, we can discover nothing more about the stegosaurus tracks
because they were hacked out of the rock and stolen in 1996. They were the only evidence we had that Stegosaurus existed in Australia. This is a good read – The Dinosaur Dealers by John Long

Bardi Jawi Rangers
When visiting the Dampier Peninsula it is impossible to ignore the beauty of the area, from the bluest of blue oceans, to the reddest of rocks and the white sandy beaches. For the Bardi Jawi Aamba (Men) and Oorany (Women) rangers, this spectacular country is not only their home but their office. The rangers are tasked with protecting and managing the land and sea country on the northern end of the Dampier Peninsula. For full story visit www.uniquelybroome.com (Kimberley Stories)

Step into the scented exotica that is Betty’s Frock Shop, owned and run by an old Broome family and evoking the colour and rich heritage of Asiatic Broome.
My passion and art evolves from my love of life on the land and my inspiration from the desert and the sea. My first hats were fashioned whilst living on outback cattle and sheep stations.
Amongst the Oriental furnishings, you will find gifts, jewellery & accessories from all over the world – Portuguese soaps, Indian tinware, Chinese tea sets and Japanese hair pins, as well as hand dyed squash hats, decorative silks, custom made handbags and colourful leather wallets.
My creations are handmade using the classic techniques of millinery and every piece is a one-off. Feathers are hand collected and the pearls are locally grown in the south sea waters near Broome. Hats by Felicity has proudly exhibited in galleries and jewellery outlets and is an annual parade fixture at the Broome races.

Dinosaur Man – Andy Greig
I was looking for a niche, something that would be fun for the young men I work with to be part of. Something unique but also represented an integral part of our history. I am involved in the arts and social justice I also wanted to expand on the tourism theme - as we had the ‘View to Asia’ sculptural event happening. I felt my dinosaur ‘Zika’ was the perfect fit to show off our incredible natural history, use my mind and get into building/construction mode which I enjoy. I have used post industrial and old farm parts, anything I could get my hands on. I wanted to make sure that even though ‘Zika‘ is heavy, that we could break her down into parts for mobility. She is going to be housed outside Zanders Restaurant at Cable Beach for all to appreciate and ponder on the history of the Dinosaurs and post Industrial social issues!

Fauna &Flora
Animals in Broome are not in your face. They love to hide and really only come out in the early morning, on dusk or at night. I started creating this list of creatures I have come across in the Kimberley – we have an abundance – you just have to look. Coucal Pheasants – over the road in the bush. Tata lizards (Ganada) – it always seems that it is waving at you Frilledneck lizard – during the wet season on the road Whales – between June – October Dolphins – every time we go out on the boat Sea Snake – walking along the beach Mud Crab – Dampier Creek Lemon
The list of flora is endless and I am not an expert. A great reference book is Broome & Beyond – it has everything you need to know. Check out the Broome Library for a copy. Look around and you will notice the Boab, Jigal tree (the Indigenous call it the Mother-inLaw tree as custom states that a man and his mother-in-law should not look or interact with each other) the leaves face away from each other. Gubinge (high in vitamin C). Rosella (makes the best jam) and the mangrove system around the bay. We have an amazing climate that allows us to grow native flora and to also have tropical gardens – the best of both worlds!
& Tiger Sharks – in the ocean Processionary caterpillars – in May sometimes on the road Bats– in the night sky every night Geckos – in my house Goanna (Bungarra) – in my back yard Merten’s Water Monitor – at the caravan park in Broome Blue Tongue Lizards – in my garden Salt water crocodiles – at Malcolm Douglas Wildlife Park Wallabies – near the Port Dingoes – at Barred Creek Northern Quolls – at Freshwater Cove Green Tree Frogs – in my outdoor bathroom Mice – not native but I found them in my pool Snakes – always at a distance! Fish of many varieties – when I go fishing Friendly frogs in our bathroom basin

It’s an eerie feeling walking out on the mudflats of Roebuck Bay when the tide is at its lowest to see the wrecks of the Catalinas and Dorniers that were ‘strafed’ on the 3rd March 1942. Nine Japanese aircraft attacked 15 flying boats that were refuelling in Roebuck Bay. These planes, belonging to Qantas, the Royal Australian Airforce, the Royal Netherlands Navy
and the US Navy, were transferring mainly women and children refugees from Java to southern states of Australia. The records are sketchy so noone knows really how many lives were lost - approximately 80. All were fleeing from Java as the Japanese were invading that area and Broome was a refuelling stop for the planes. A good book to read if you
want to know more is ‘Broome’s One Day War’ by Mervyn Prime. Available from the Broome Museum. Remember that the wrecks are living graves and not to walk too close to the remains. The wrecks are visible on a low tide of one metre or less. See the Walks section for the Flying Boat Walk. Map Ref O14

Pearl Meat
Pearl meat is the adductor muscle of the pearl oyster, Pinctada Maxima. It is a by-product of pearl production and is a highly regarded delicacy. Once the oyster is no longer used for producing pearls the adductor muscle is removed. As only small quantities of pearl meat tend to be harvested annually it is an expensive commodity, selling in Broome for around $110 per kilogram fresh. The white pearl meat can be eaten raw and is described as sweet with a hint of salt. It is similar to abalone or scallop in flavour. With a delicate flavour and texture, pearl meat needs no more than a quick sear to cook. It is thought to have aphrodisiac properties – seems most seafood has. Bon appetite!

Mudcrab Romance by Jason Fowler Ever wondered how the mudcrabs of Roebuck Bay go about breeding and bringing successive generations of baby muddies into the world? While very little is known about Roebuck muddies, we do know a lot about their country cousins from the Northern Territory, thanks to the NT Fisheries Department. The time to score usually falls on a full moon. This is when the female is most likely to moult. And when they’re moulting well think Thursday night at the Roey. Male mudcrabs eye-stalks stick up when a female is about to moult. They fight off other males and claim their girl. For the rest of this love story go to www.uniquelybroome.com (Kimberley Stories)

Pumpkins & Pagans
I went to meet Rusty Dredge who starting growing Jack-O-Lantern pumpkins 7 years ago at his property called Ginmore just a little passed 12 Mile. In 2016 he harvested 15,000 for our local Australian market plus he is dipping his toes into the overseas market!!!! I didnt know that besides Christmas and Easter that Halloween is the next biggest confectionary/event splurge that the world makes. These pumpkins are beautiful round, very orange and all being produced for the Halloween festival. It’s a worldwide craze and Broome is part of it. ‘These pumpkins grow well above the 26th parallel. We have to be careful their size is consistent and they don’t become too big which can happen! I think we are too kind to them. In Australia there are only 3 growers of the Jack-O-Lantern pumpkins’, says Rusty. To read more go to www.uniquelybroome.com (Kimberley Stories)

Gantheaume Point & Anastasia’s Pool This is home to our lighthouse, racecourse and dinosaur footprints. There are also interpretation boards about the area’s natural, traditional and European history.
30 metres (98 ft) out from Gantheaume Point are dinosaur footprints dated as Early Cretaceous in age (approximately 130 million years ago). The tracks can be seen only during very low tide. Plant fossils are also preserved extensively in the Broome Sandstone at Gantheaume Point and in coastal exposures further north. On a 9.5m tide the different rock pools fill up. The location is stunning, surrounded by beautiful rock formations, overlooking the Indian Ocean. Best sunset viewing! Do be careful as this is a dangerous and fragile area. It gets dark quickly so take a torch (just in case). Map Ref S8

In January 2 014 a storm destroyed Anastasia’s P ool. The pool was named afte r a former lighthouse keepe r’s wife. Patrick Percy had his Chinese crewm an, Wing Loong, concret e the bottom of a rock pool fo r his wife, who was crippled with arthritis.

Flight of the Bats
A mixed black flying fox and little red flying fox colony of around 50,000 megabats lives all year in mangroves next to Streeter’s Jetty. They chatter and socialise loudly before flying out at dusk each evening. The bats are key pollinators and seed dispersers for native trees and plants. They have amazing eyesight and a good sense of smell so they find the best nectar, pollen and fruit on the native trees. Also they love our mangoes and pawpaws. They are messy eaters and their purple ‘vomit’ is an amazing paint stripper. So don’t park your car under a mango tree!

We do have the most beautiful and largest pearls in the world! South Sea Pearls – from the Pinctada Maxima the largest oyster in the world – this is the animal that Broome pearls are grown in. Freshwater Pearls – from other countries, smaller in size and less valuable – still beautiful. Baroque – an irregular shaped pearl – very fashionable. JEWELLERY Cygnet Bay Pearls The quintessential ‘Broome pearl’ is a Cygnet Bay Pearl, the only pearl grown in the Shire of Broome you can purchase direct from the farm. The story of the Australian Pearl started in 1959 when Lyndon Brown at Cygnet Bay discovered the secrets of pearl culturing, and so began a truly Australian cultured pearling dynasty that continues today under the stewardship of 3rd generation pearler James Brown. Our beautiful pearls have not been treated or artificially enhanced in any way and will bring joy to you and generations to come. Eat Sleep Dive Repeat by Adam Morrow Broome history tells us a lot about the times of the hard hat divers, and what it was like for them back in the early days of Broome’s pearling industry. But what are the experiences of a modern day pearl diver? Adam Morrow, who has been working as a pearl drift diver for the last 5 years, tells us what it’s like. ‘Pearl drift diving is completely different to what 99% of the population call a job. There are only about 50 pearl drift divers in Australia so you could say it is kind of specialised.’ says Adam For the full story visit www.uniquelybroome.com (Kimberley Stories)

Rosella Tea
There are 20 of them all up, starting at the Carnarvon St end. The stories take you all the way from the days when the first ships landed in Broome, through the whole history of the pearling industry and all its ups and downs, WWII, to the advent of tourism and present day Broome. Map Ref E5 Also known as hibiscus tea. This plant grows like a weed. Harvest the red calyx, give them a wash, and then put in dehydrator or you can sun dry or use fresh calyx. Then just use like tea leaves. It’s properties are tremendous. It helps sooth colds, coughs, helps digestion, promotes healthy kidney function, is a treatment for cancer, and reduces a fever and that’s just a few of its benefits!

Our main light industrial area is located just a couple of kilometres from Chinatown on the edge of Old Broome. Here is where most Broome people go shopping. There are furniture shops, hardware, whitegoods and light industry factories. Take the time and visit a creative cooperative, The Broome Factory, the interesting furniture shed of Stonerage and Nagula Jarndu fabric designers. This area is well worth a drive around. The port industrial area is more heavy industry though hidden away in there is Chimaera Pottery – a must visit! Blue Haze LIA is just 2 kms out of town on the Broome Rd – home to lots of small industry and the Norforce Army Base. Visit Hidden Valley Handcrafts who have their aromatic shop and soap factory in Harriet Rd and Kimberley Coffee have their roasting shed.

MANGO PRODUCTS
Mango Chips You can never have too many mangoes. Though the problem is they all seem to get ripe all at once. I love making mango chips they last forever.
Julie & Geoff Weguelin With our beautiful Broome mangoes, and lots of experimenting, the challenge has been ‘what can you do with a mango’? After 10 years we have a few ideas!! Mango chutneys, mango jam, mango vinegar, mango curries, mango cakes, mango tea, mango icecream, mango wine ... and Julie is always creating so the list goes on! Come to The Mango Place shop to try our products or see us at the Courthouse Markets!
Mango Chips The mangoes need to be ripe but not over ripe. Firm! Cut off the cheeks of the mango and remove the skin. Slice with a really sharp knife no thicker than 5mm. You will need to have a dehydrater. The time varies but usually taking about 8 hours at 55 degrees celsius.

Music
Broome … the very name alone evokes myriad of thoughts and emotions. Its pindan cliffs, the turquoise waters off Cable Beach and the history and mystique of Roebuck Bay! These common threads run through the sound commonly referred to as ‘Broome Music’. There are no words to describe exactly what Broome music is yet when you hear it! The magical nature of this town is comprised of people whose history goes back to days of corroboree, predating the pearling heydays with its Asian and global influence through the ‘wireless’ that would punctuate
the airwaves with songs that reflected the times to modern Broome times. Broome people are proud of their history and are willing to share it with the rest of the world with a colourful cultural expose of music, food and art. The songs of Jimmy Chi’s Bran Nu Dae are woven forever into our music culture. The Pigram Brothers – listening to them is as much a reflective history lesson as it is simply beautiful music. Our music has genres for everyone – from Rock to Country, Jazz to Blues, Hip Hop to instrumental and all the while retaining the very essence of Broome.
Local organisation, Goolarri Media is dedicated to identifying, fostering and promoting emerging new talent and they never have to look for long. The 20+ year open mic session at Murphy’s on a Tuesday night will see German backpackers jamming with Bidyadanga locals or French tourists singing with Beagle Bay musicians in a true display of multicultural coexistence in harmony which, at its core, is the essence of Broome Music. by Guy Ghouse photo taken at ‘A Taste of Broome’

Snubfin Dolphin Roebuck Bay is home to over 100 Snubfins, apparently the largest known group in Australia. Right on our doorstep. I can’t believe I didn’t know that we had a new species of dolphins in Roebuck Bay that only got recognised by scientists in 2005. Isn’t that incredible that in our world there are still new discoveries. They really look so different – they are similar to the Irrawaddy dolphin. A big boofy head – that only a mother would love and they seem quite shy. They are not speedy like other dolphins – they bob around on the surface, gliding along slowly feeding. Probably hoping not to bump into anything, as the Roebuck Bay water is that beautiful azure blue with very low visibility, hence their large head for good sonar abilities.
Staircase to the Moon
The full moon reflects on the exposed mudflats at extremely low tide creating the illusion of a staircase to the moon. Best seen between March to November each year. Streeter’s Jetty
Built in the 1890s to service the pearling industry, which, at its peak, had up to 400 luggers anchored offshore. The jetty accommodated numerous luggers that off-loaded pearl shell that were transported on trolleys to the sorting sheds. The Indigenous and Asian residents used the jetty for swimming and fishing as this was the only town area they could use for this purpose. This is the best place for plane spotting and listening to the bats in the Mangroves. Map Ref D6 photo courtesy of the Broome Historical Society

Call the Midwife by Gwen Jones
I am a remote area nurse and Midwife working in remote Aboriginal Communities in the Top End of the Northern Territory. 20 years ago I left Perth and a career as an operating room nurse and came to the Kimberley, working in Derby then moved into the Kimberley Remote Communities. I fell in love with the Kimberley and the lifestyle it offered. I retired from remote nursing several times over the past 5 years but the shortage of nurses and the introduction of FIFO nurses to fill the vacancies lured me back over and over again. At the moment I am at Ramingining, a community of about 1000 people. For Gwen’s full story go to www.uniquelybroome.com (Kimberley Stories)

Tides
The tides in Broome are among the biggest in the world. The rise and fall of the tide creates a beautiful rhythm to the day and is an integral part of our lives in Broome. We are on a peninsula surrounded by water and it affects our lives constantly. To walk along the beach, boating, fishing, looking for dinosaur footprints or finding the Flying Boat wrecks you really do need to have an understanding of how the tides work. The tide moves in for six hours and then out for six hours. It alternates between a NEAP tide (small movement of water) and a SPRING tide (large movement of water). All controlled by the moon phase.
Learn how to read the tide chart – the number on the left is the time of day, the number on the right is the measurement of the tide. Take the highest number away from the smallest and this gives you a good indication of the movement of water. Neap tide has 2 to 3 metres of movement and a spring tide has 6 to10 metres of movement. High tide on a neap is early-mid morning and early-mid evening, whilst high tide on a Spring is midday and midnight! Yes, I know it is a bit complex but I assure you that if you get to understand the tides – you will always be safe.

Meat Works
I was driving along the highway and happened to be passing on the day that the Kimberley Meat Company had their open day to the public in September 2016. Jack Burton from Yeeda Pastoral Company has had this dream for many years. The abattoir, which is located halfway between Broome and Derby, has the capacity to process up to 300 animals a day and is the first major abattoir to operate in the Kimberley since 1993. I really felt history was being renewed on that day. The facility is amazing, the investment huge and the dream has become reality. We forget that the Kimberley is cattle country and that we had meat works in Wyndham, Derby and Broome. They were part of the landscape and created employment for many people. In 1938 Broome Freezing and Chilling Works opened and in 1942 it was upgraded to supply frozen beef for the Australian Army Catering Corps. Their kill capacity was upgraded to 100 per day. In 1993 DEMCO (Derby Export Meat Company) closed it doors and in 1997 it become known as one of the best views in Broome for its residents. This photo depicts a very different view from the facilities that are at the Kimberley Meat Company. photo courtesy of the Broome Historical Society

Turtle nesting season is from 1st October to 28th February. During that time on the beaches around Broome there is lots of activity at night with the turtles coming in to lay their eggs and hatchlings returning to the sea. For many years they’ve had to share this intimate process with the 4WDs. Finally they are getting some peace as the Cable Beach Amphitheatre vehicle access is CLOSED at night to vehicles from 8pm – 6am. It is also closed two hours either side of the high tide when it is nine metres or greater – this is for your safety. A gate has been installed and will be locked – so don’t get stuck on the beach. All other times of the year access is open. I hope this information makes you decide not to drive on the beach during October-February

Karajarri Country
Visitors who want to get off the beaten track and discover a less traversed area of coastline, will find the perfect option in Karajarri Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) just 1.5 hours south of Broome. Karajarri country extends from the sandy beaches, tidal creeks and reef system of 80 Mile Beach and Gourdon Bay, inland towards the vast arid country, wetlands and dunes of the Great Sandy Desert. The area is home to many rare animal species, such as the nationally endangered bilby, Marsupial Mole and Northern Quoll, as well as turtles, migratory birds and reptiles. A team of Aboriginal rangers, known as the Karajarri rangers look

after this country and have been working hard to officially open up Karajarri country for the purposes of public recreation, education and enjoyment. Visitors can access a permit by visiting www.karajarri.com or in person at the Port Smith Caravan Park, which is working in partnership with the rangers. Please note that a permit is not required for the Port Smith Lagoon itself. For more information about the Karajarri visitor permit please do not hesitate to contact us on 9194 0100 or via email at karajarri.admin@klc.org.au.
Whales
Did you know that Broome and the Kimberley coastline, is the major highway for Humpback Whales? This is where they set up their nursery for their calves to nourish them and fatten them up before they head south on the long journey to the Antarctic. Between June and October you can see them on the horizon, or sometimes they wander into the port area or closer into the shoreline chasing bait schools for food and showing off their young.

Wet Season: Call for opening times
This settlement is 20 kms from Broome on the main highway. In the 1970s it was land allocated by the government to be used for agricultural purposes. Today it is a mixture of mango farms, cafes, organic herbs and vegie gardens, a turf farm, plant nurseries and for some people just a quiet place out of town to live. This is where you can visit Wallis Mangoes who create their mango products for the markets. The 12 Mile Bird Park is a tourist attraction and worth visiting. Drop into The Mango Place – Kanagae Estate on Kanagae Rd for a taste of mango wine, mango smoothies and visit their shop full of mango products. I love a Sunday drive out to 12 Mile, just to get out on the open road and out of Broome.
Weather
Broome is a constant 30 degrees on average all year round and it’s really the minimum temperature and humidity that changes. DRY SEASON – May to Oct Sunny, cloudless days, the ocean crisp, cool and everyone’s happy. During this time we usually don’t get any rain – although saying this each year in either June or July we always have one week where the weather gets a bit wet – the locals love it – we rug up in our very outdated cold weather gear and start cooking comfort food. Visitors always get surprised by how cold and damp the nights can get. That drip, dripping you hear is not rain but condensation! WET SEASON – Nov to April If you want to experience a tropical climate – then Broome is it. The frangipanis are blooming, the cicadas are clicking, the green frogs are mating, the ocean is warm, the sky is overcast and Roebuck Bay looks stunning. The storms come quick and fast. It’s better than fireworks and it’s my favourite time of the year – too warm and sticky to do anything else but relax, watch sunsets, drink gin and tonics and read a book. SIX SEASONS Marul – April, the hot period after the wet season Wirralbu – May, easterly winds bring a cool breeze and cool nights. Barrgana – Jun to Aug, the dry season – when the wind blows strongly from the east and fog appears. Nights and mornings become even cooler. Wirlburu – Sept, westerly winds. Warmer nights. I love September! Larja – Oct to Nov, the build up to the wet season, when the days are very warm and the humidity is high – everyone starts to go Troppo! Mankala – Dec-Mar, the wet season. Sweaty, possible cyclones.
Yoga & Blue Body Buddha Sanctuary The Buddha Sanctuary was established to offer guests of Cable Beach Club, tourists and the local community a place to relax, reflect and meditate. Broome’s hidden treasure. Yoga classes happen all year round. In the wet season they start at 6am and in the dry season 6am and 7.30am and some afternoons during the week. Times may vary so check on their Facebook page – Blue Body Buddha Sanctuary The most striking feature of the Sanctuary is a 3.5 metre crystal, seven tonne, sitting Buddha, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.
