Broome is a vibrant town, with an interesting history and a small multi-cultural population of around 18,000 people – sometimes I feel I am living in paradise. There are so many stories of people who came for a visit and never left. That could be you! We have no traffic lights, lots of roundabouts, tropical gardens, unusual architecture, incredible tides and the unique experience of having the sun rising and setting over the water.

some things that are just a little bit different – you could call it quirky. In this edition I would like to share these with you. Being on holiday to me is about finding the essence of the place you are visiting. My hope is that a little bit of Broome rubs off on you. Relax and enjoy the sunsets!

I have lived here long enough to realise it is also an unusual place to live with

Broome is located in the heart of Yawuru country, extending north of Willie Creek and just south of Eco Beach tourist resort. The Yawuru hinterland takes in the station country of Thangoo, Roebuck Plains and parts of Dampier Downs. Yawuru people’s northern, eastern and southern Aboriginal neighbours are Jabirr Jabirr, Nyikana/ Mangala and Karajarri. People from these

neighbouring language and cultural groups continue to have close ties with Yawuru people. Yawuru country today is rich in cultural significance. Bugurrigarra is the word Yawuru people use to describe how their country was created with continuing traditional law that maintains Yawuru people’s connection to their land and sea. There are traditional songlines and sites of significance in and around Broome.

Have you noticed that the houses don’t have letterboxes? In Broome there is no postal delivery and everyone has a post office box. Why? I think the locals like meeting at the post office for a chat and we are so transient that it suits our lifestyle.

What is Kimberley Girl?

Empowering Indigenous Women Broome school girl Sahvannah Brandis took the initiative of entering in the Kimberley Girl programme this year. During the two weeks she received lots of information to help in her future. Her confidence increased, especially in public speaking and she forged lasting friendships with girls from other parts of the Kimberley. Those qualities were noticed by facilitator Kira Fong, resulting in Sahvannah receiving the Ambassador’s Leadership Award. For the next 12 months she will be the face of Nuff of the Puff campaign and will be visiting schools in the region to promote awareness of the harm of smoking. For the full story on What is Kimberley Girl? please visit www.uniquelybroome.com and look up Kimberley Stories.

We are hell bent on saving our beautiful environment one upcycle at a time and promoting anyone like-minded to the extent where we will accommodate the right people in our workshop . Our distinctive furniture you will see at many locations in and around Broome – The Good Cartel, Cygnet Bay, Matso’s Brewery, Broome Convention Centre, Notre Dame University and the Broome Makers Gallery. Agunya has recently opened up a workshop in Bidyadanga, 180kms south of Broome. They are making furniture, bush craft and small metal hand tools all from recycled materials. It is our intention to replicate the facility in other remote communities. You are always welcome to visit our workshop. Bidyadanga Community Art Centre We paint from our heart and retell stories told by the old people. We call ourselves the Bidyadanga Community Artists as most of us were born and bred in this country, but some were taken away from families by missionaries to Bidyadanga to learn Kartiya (nonAboriginal) way of living. We also have our nanna and grands from the desert. They came out between 30-40 years ago. Not a long time ago. Throughout the years, we gained Certificate 1, II and III in Visual Arts and Contemporary Craft to equip ourselves with art techniques. The outcome of this training is to establish our art centre like the working artists in other well-known and established art centres. Come for a drive to visit us 180km south of Broome to view some of our works. Be sure to call before coming. Chrissy Carter

Judy Brittain

Broome Art Club and working studio is the home based studio of Chrissy Carter, visual artist and art facilitator.

Judy creates handmade kiln glassware and dichroic jewellery – inspired by her more than 30 years of living in Broome and the Kimberley.

Broome Art Club hosts art workshops on a regular basis in a range of mediums, including various watercolour techniques, drawing practice, ceramics, pastel, mixed media including airbrush and collage, rendering, mosaic and more. Many of my classes are only 3 hours and at the end you will have a finished result which will be very rewarding.

Judy makes each glass item from the rich vibrant colours of art glass which are hand-cut, fired and polished. No two pieces are created the same. Jewellery is individually cut and fired from dichroic glass to create a piece perfect for any occasion. Her glass art makes the ideal gift or spoil yourself – exclusively created and sold here in Broome.

Here are some examples: * create a mandala * watercolour sea creatures * mosaic house numbers

Visit Judy at the Courthouse Markets for that unique Broome glass piece.

Classes cater to all ages and levels of skill from 'never picked up a pencil’ to ‘reawakening the artist’.

Angela Bakker

From jewellery to sculpture – A pearler’s daughter

Angela Bakker was born and grew up in Africa. After training as a potter and print maker in England, she moved to Australia where she taught Art and Pottery and exhibited her own work. In 1990, she moved to Broome and set up her workshop, producing a range of pottery and sculpture using local clays. Also she had limited edition lino prints that depict the quirkiness of Broome. Her 2012 solo exhibition was on the theme of Builders & Collectors at the SSJG Heritage Centre, this was a follow on from her 2006 exhibition Nomads – both exhibitions were held in Broome.

The many styles and mediums for sale appeal to a broad range from the discerning art collector to those looking for memorable one of a kind artefacts. Johnny Chi Lane, Chinatown (Dampier Terrace end) Map Ref E10 0417 984 009 0407 307 037

The colours of the antifloul used on the luggers was red and green; the leftover paint became the colour scheme of the Broome buildings.

This year Angela is having an exhibition of Teapots, Tiles and Torsos. This is a long awaited exhibition of a truly gifted artist. From driving dinghies at the age of 6 to managing a pearl farm and crew of 32 men at the age of 16, her upbringing was far from normal. Granddaughter of the legendary pearling master Captain Alfred Chambers Morgan Georgia spent her early years in Broome and grew up learning the pearl farming business and industry. Using metal as her primary medium, she manipulates it in multiple ways, giving life to whatever subject material inspires her on a day to day basis. The female form features in many of her larger pieces, including her recent entry into the Hedland Awards, called “The Flaming Jillaroo”. Georgia also creates architectural and landscape design elements on a commission basis and loves to work with other designers and artists. You can view her art at the Broome Makers Gallery or if you wish to explore her larger sculptural body of work, visit Georgia Morgan Designs on facebook, or www.georgiamorgan.com.au. For private viewings at her studio, or to discuss commission work, Georgia is available on mobile 0408 957 995

Shibori is the Japanese word for a variety of ways of embellishing textiles by shaping cloth and securing it before dyeing. The word comes from the verb root shiboru, ‘to wring, squeeze, press’. I use cotton, silk and linen to create a range of scarves, tea towels, pillow cases, table runners and place mats. I also have lengths of material for the sewer in us and sample sizes for the crazy quilter. I started my journey into Shibori at Broome TAFE. It was just meant to be a short course and now has turned into an obsession. I love the feeling when you open a piece of material that you have dyed to see if the pattern that you wanted to create appears. It is always a thrill. Indigo dye is the preferred dye that I use - I love blue! Sometimes I am at the Courthouse Markets or contact me to visit my home studio and see my range. 0417 176 551 Facebook: shiboribroome

A Wet Season Addiction Last year I went to the Mud and Saltwater Film Festival held in Broome. I was fascinated by the images I saw of our Wet Season storms. Most people visit during the Dry and miss out on the electrifying storms of the Wet Season. Richard Young was the photographer and I was curious to find out more about his unusual passion. When did you first start photographing storms? “Probably about 11 years ago when digital cameras really took off, I remember the category five Cyclone George off the coast and the swell on Cable Beach was incredible. It started around then’ just seeing the power of nature.” said Richard

Cable Beach was named because of the telegraph cable linking Broome to Java in 1889. The 22 kms of beach is a favourite spot for the early morning walker, or to watch the sunset and the camels. In the heat of the day, hire a chair and umbrella from The Beach Hut and you will really feel that you are on holiday. It is the best way to enjoy the beach in luxury. Nudist Beach

Just walk through the rocks (north of the swimming area at Cable Beach). You can throw off the worries of the world (clothes) and mix it with the camels, cars, the odd bicycle and dressed person.

Riddell Beach features red sandy cliffs, unusual rock formations, rocky outcrops and a secluded beach. It’s off Kavite Rd and from the car park only a short walk to the beach. How lucky we are that we have such a special place to go. Simpsons Beach is an interesting walk along Roebuck Bay. Look out for the pelicans –

they are so regal sitting on the rocks or doing a fly-by with their family.

Town Beach

is a safe bay and beach with grassed area, shade, seating, a water park for children, plus a shower and toilets. The childrens’ playground and Stanley’s Town Beach Cafe make it a great family spot. Boat launching facilities.

Entrance Point It’s become a favourite spot for weddings due to its amazing backdrop of the rock formations. There is a large car park from where a lot of the dinghies set off each day for fishing. You can either look out over the water or watch the activity at the Port. Boat launching facilities. Northern Beaches

Coconut Well, Willie Creek, Barred Creek, Quondong Pt, James Price Pt and Minarie are all north of Broome. Great day trips, though you do need a 4WD and know where you are going. Get a map!

Cemeteries Japanese & Chinese cemeteries To walk through makes me feel so sad that these people never returned to their homeland and their loved ones. Across the road is Taiji Road – this is named because a lot of the Japanese pearl divers came from this area in Japan – Taiji is Broome’s ‘sister city’. Map Ref N20 Broome cemetery Truly this is a meeting and resting place of many different peoples and religions who have lived, worked and died here. Tourists often overlook the Broome cemetery but there are many historical graves including Sisters of St John of God who have a wonderful graveyard section. These Irish Sisters arrived 1907 and didn’t go home. Explore and you will find other Broome personalities in the cemetery that you’ve read about. Chinatown

28

Chinatown is our main shopping area in Broome. It is the most confusing name for many visitors to Broome as I am sure you are looking for lots of Chinese restaurants. Today Chinatown is full of food, fashion, pearl jewellery and other retail shops, with just three Chinese restaurants. In the early days it was full of pearling sheds, shops, opium dens, noodle houses, boarding

houses, laneways and where all the Asiatics lived whilst the Europeans lived in Old Broome area. Take some time to walk down Carnarvon Street and look at the original buildings, especially on the western side. You will notice that there are still living quarters behind the shops. Your trip to the Dampier Peninsula is all about culture! Beagle Bay Community Beagle Bay is home of the Nyul Nyul people who are the traditional owners of this area. It is famous for its unique Sacred Heart Church with its pearl shell altar built by the Pallottine monks and local Indigenous residents in 1917. If you have seen the movie Bran Nue Dae you will recognise the altar. It is worth a visit and there is a shop if you need any supplies. Lombadina Community A tranquil community, surrounded by white sandy beaches is home to the Bardi people. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday you can purchase bread from their woodfired oven open 8am – 11am and 1pm to 3.30pm. They have selected accommodation, an Art & Craft centre plus the famous paperbark Church – Christ the King Church, built from local bush timber.

One Arm Point Community Located at the tip of the Dampier Peninsula, One Arm Point Community, or Ardyaloon as it is called in Bardi, is home to approximately 400 people. The community is surrounded by sensitive coastal areas and mangrove systems and is a great place to experience the massive tidal water movements of the King Sound. The Bardi Jawi people are strongly connected to the salt water and have a rich culture and traditions passed down from their ancestors who lived on the surrounding islands and the mainland. The Ardyaloon Store is well stocked and open from Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm, Saturday 9am till 11.30am. On the right hand side before the roundabout, fuel is available 24/7. All major debit cards accepted. Fuel cards are also available at the Store. Visit the Ardyaloon Hatchery – to learn about the community’s trochus fishery tradition.

Nyul Nyul Rangers Poem written by Nyul Nyul Ranger Coordinator Neil Hamaguchi. Neil grew up in Broome, is an ex-pearl diver and has been working with the rangers for the past five years. They work the peninsula from East to West. Their knowledge of Bilbies is up with the best. The beaches are many from Ocean to Sound. But they keep them all clean, get the stuff off the ground. They also report strange things that they find. Like foreign objects the tides left behind. The Monsoon Vine Thickets are ancient and rare. The rangers all know this and take extra care. They learn of the animals, the plants and their seeds. But some of the time is spent just killing weeds. They use modern science from day to day. But never forget what the old people say. Fire is there as a friend or a foe. Do they fight it with fire or just let it go. Call Nyul Nyul Rangers they’ll surely know. Sometimes the elders and kids come along

34

The Rangers all love it, makes everything strong.

From their base in Beagle Bay, the Nyul Nyul Rangers manage two coastlines, hundreds of kilometres of beach and inland freshwater springs on the Dampier Peninsula. The ranger group has a diverse work plan that includes coastal patrols, quarantine inspections, marine debris clean-ups, feral animal and weed control, water monitoring and research, crocodile management, fire management, biodiversity surveys, threatened species and ecosystems (bilbies, gouldian finches and monsoon vine thickets), as well as tourism and visitor management. For information or to touch base with the Nyul Nyul rangers, please phone 9192 4051.

Dinosaur Tracks

Finding a footprint or track (the term used by scientists) made by a dinosaur 130 million years ago is a special experience, and there’s no better place to search than on the beaches of Broome and the Dampier Peninsula’s Dinosaur Coast. In fact, the Dinosaur Coast is the only place in Australia where Sauropod tracks can be seen. Since 2011 scientists have identified thousands of dinosaur tracks and numerous discrete tracksites in the Broome Sandstone rock on the beaches from Roebuck Bay 80km north towards Cape Leveque at the tip of the Dampier Peninsula. “These trackways are of international significance. The glimpse of a 130-million-year-old world that they provide is awe inspiring. But it is the linking of these track sites into the songline and associated indigenous culture that adds a whole other dimension to their significance”, says Dr Steve Salisbury, palaeontolist at the University of Queenland.

Broome horse racing has literally evolved out of the dust over the past decade and is now recognised as the ‘rising star’ of Australian racing. Facilities at Broome are as good as any in the state. Large trees and shade sails complement the open style facilities to take advantage of the ‘never fail‘ weather of the dry season. A day at the Broome races is an experience rather than a race day. The colourful social scene, with entertainment throughout the day, is an attraction as big and as fast as the furious racing. Those who have attended the Broome races always return, and the weather report is always ‘fine and good’. You can purchase a season pass if you wish or just come for a day. Fauna &Flora

Animals in Broome are not in your face. They love to hide and really only come out in the early morning, on dusk or at night. I started creating a list of creatures I have come across in the Kimberley – we have an abundance – you just have to look.

46

Coucal Pheasants – over the road in the bush. Tata lizards (Ganada) – it always seems that it is waving at you Frilledneck lizard – during the wet season on the road Whales – between June – October Dolphins – every time we go out on the boat Sea Snake – walking along the beach Mud Crab – Dampier Creek Lemon & Tiger Sharks – in the ocean

The list of flora is long and I am not an expert. A great reference book is Broome & Beyond – it has everything you need to know. Check out the Broome Library for a copy. Look around and you will notice the Boab, Jigal tree (the Indigenous call it the Mother-inLaw tree as custom states that a man and his mother-in-law should not look or interact with each other) the leaves face away from each other. Gubinge (high in vitamin C). Rosella (makes the best jam) and the mangrove system around the bay. We have an amazing climate that allows us to grow native flora and to also have tropical gardens – the best of both worlds!

Processionary caterpillars – in May sometimes on the road Bats– in the night sky every night Geckos – in my house Goanna (Bungarra) – in my back yard Merten’s Water Monitor – at the caravan park in Broome Blue Tongue Lizards – in my garden Salt water crocodiles – at Malcolm Douglas Wildlife Park Wallabies – near the Port Dingoes – at Barred Creek Northern Quolls – at Freshwater Cove Green Tree Frogs – in my outdoor bathroom Mice – not native but I found them in my pool Snakes – always at a distance! Fish of many varieties – when I go fishing Friendly frogs in our bathroom basin

5,000 kilometres to go fishing

In 1990 Chris Nisbet towed his boat from Melbourne to Broome to compete in the Broome’s Billfish Classic which this year is celebrating its 30th anniversary. “The first time I came to Broome I was travelling with my Mum as she had plenty of spare time on her hands and liked a bit of adventure. I’d been told by some good friends Jack and Pam Weiss of this sailfish tournament in Broome. I had the boat with me so all I needed was someone to make up a team. Mum wasn’t real keen, so I called my mate Simmo back in Melbourne. He hopped on the next plane and within days we were fishing the Broome Billfish Classic.

The weather was perfect, fishing fantastic and I remember the presentation night at Cable Beach Club and the magnificent smorgasbord. It was a great finish to a hard six days out on the water.” said Chris. That was back in1990 and he has since competed in 29 Billfish Classic tournaments and operates his own charter fishing business out of Broome. For information on the Billfish Classic visit broomefishingclub.com.au For the full story go to uniquelybroome.com and see Kimberley Stories.

Flying Boat Wrecks

This photo was taken at dawn

50

It’s an eerie feeling walking out on the mudflats of Roebuck Bay when the tide is at its lowest to see the wrecks of the Catalinas and Dorniers that were ‘strafed’ on the 3rd March 1942. Nine Japanese aircraft attacked 15 flying boats that were refuelling in Roebuck Bay. These planes, belonging to Qantas, the Royal Australian Airforce, the Royal Netherlands Navy and the US Navy, were

transferring mainly women and children refugees from Java to southern states of Australia. The records are sketchy so no-one knows really how many lives were lost approximately 80. All were fleeing from Java as the Japanese were invading and Broome was a refuelling stop for the planes heading south. A good book to read if you want to know

more is ‘Broome’s One Day War’ by Mervyn Prime. Available from the Broome Museum. Remember that the wrecks are living graves and not to walk too close. The wrecks are visible on a low tide of one metre or less. See the Walks section for the Flying Boat Walk. Map Ref O14

FOOD

Pearl Meat

Pearl meat is the adductor muscle of the pearl oyster, Pinctada Maxima. It is a by-product of pearl production and is a highly regarded delicacy. Once the oyster is no longer used for producing pearls the adductor muscle is removed. As only small quantities of pearl meat is harvested annually it is an expensive commodity, selling in Broome for around $110 per kilogram fresh. The white pearl meat can be eaten raw and is described as sweet with a hint of salt. It is similar to abalone or scallop in flavour. With a delicate flavour and texture, pearl meat needs no more than a quick sear to cook. It is thought to have aphrodisiac properties – seems most seafood has. Bon appetite!

The Fat Ladies of the Sea by Jason Fowler,

Marine Projects Officer, Environs Kimberley

60

The most beautiful lady of the Australian seas has to be mother Dugong. She has a large buxom figure, tipping the scales at 450kg of pure curvy softness. Add to this exquisite feminine form a pair of large juicy lips and sultry eyes and we have a lady irresistible to men and male Dugong alike. That is, if you don’t mind a lady with a tough, bristly moustache guarding those voluptuous lips and the presence of sharp tusks when things get rough. She can’t see

very well, so even the ugliest of males would stand a chance with her. She also possesses excellent hearing, so no gossiping behind her back. Her prominent nose means she has an exceptional sense of smell and can sniff out the juiciest seagrass and the smelliest male at the same time. She holds that unique position of power where she gets to choose which males she will mate with and often selects a few, guaranteeing conception, although she

seems unperturbed as to who the father actually is. Male Dugong are always ready, always eager to mate, but have to wait until she is ready, which can be a considerable amount of time as pregnancy lasts 14 months and she only becomes pregnant once every 3-7 years. Flight of the Bats

A mixed black flying fox and little red flying fox colony of around 50,000 megabats lives all year in mangroves next to Streeter’s Jetty. They chatter and socialise loudly before flying out at dusk each evening. The bats are key pollinators and seed dispersers for native trees and plants. They have amazing eyesight and a good sense of smell so they find the best nectar, pollen and fruit on the native trees. Also they love our mangoes and pawpaws. They are messy eaters and their purple ‘vomit’ is an amazing paint stripper. So don’t park your car under a mango tree!

Women in Pearling

This photo was taken in Broome in the late 20s. The person on the left was the grand mother of a woman who joined the Broome Historical Walking Tour in 2016 and gave Wil Thomas the photo. She could not explain the picture fully..Some have speculated the photo is staged, but if so, why is the life line tied.? In Rosemary Hemphills beautiful book "The Pearling Master's Daughter" the author explains that the adventurous Henrietta Drake Brockman (whose pioneering research and book led to the discovery of the location of the wreck of the Batavia off the Abrolhos islands,) "Went out on Dad’s lugger and donned full diving gear to explore the bottom of the ocean around Broome..." The first woman to do so. This lugger was probably the "Rosef" (still afloat in Bunbury!) Is that Pearling Master Goldie on the right? Any more info on this picture would be welcome.

Amanda Riley

Prudence Galwey

The story of the Australian Pearl started in 1959 when Lyndon Brown at Cygnet Bay discovered the secrets of pearl culturing, and so began a truly Australian cultured pearling dynasty that continues today under the stewardship of 3rd generation pearler James Brown.

Inspiration from nature. Amanda’s jewellery designs draw from many aspects of the fabulous Kimberley. The skies, the land and the sea.

The Galwey showroom reveals a comprehensive range of pearls, with modern designs featuring our unique Australian South Sea pearl, as well as a selection of Black pearls from the Abrolhos and Tahiti, and South Sea Gold pearls.

Our beautiful pearls have not been treated or artificially enhanced in any way and will bring joy to you and generations to come. Browse our exclusive range of pearl jewellery only available at our Cygnet Bay Boutiques in Broome and at the farm where our precious gems were nurtured into existence. Music

Broome … the very name alone evokes myriad of thoughts and emotions. Its pindan cliffs, the turquoise waters off Cable Beach and the history and mystique of Roebuck Bay! These common threads run through the sound commonly referred to as ‘Broome Music’. There are no words to describe exactly what Broome music is yet you know it when you hear it! The magical nature of this town is comprised of people whose history goes back to days of corroboree, predating the pearling heyday with its Asian and global influence through the ‘wireless’ that would punctuate

the airwaves with songs that reflected the times to modern Broome times. Broome people are proud of their history and are willing to share it with the rest of the world with a colourful cultural expose of music, food and art. The songs of Jimmy Chi’s Bran Nu Dae are woven forever into our music culture. The Pigram Brothers – listening to them is as much a reflective history lesson as it is simply beautiful music. Our music has genres for everyone – from Rock to Country, Jazz to Blues, Hip Hop to instrumental and all the while retaining the very essence of Broome.

Local organisation, Goolarri Media is dedicated to identifying, fostering and promoting emerging new talent and they never have to look for long. The 20+ year open mic session at Murphy’s on a Tuesday night will see German backpackers jamming with Bidyadanga locals or French tourists singing with Beagle Bay musicians in a true display of multicultural coexistence in harmony which, at its core, is the essence of Broome Music. by Guy Ghouse photo taken at ‘A Taste of Broome’

Snubfin Dolphin

Roebuck Bay is home to over 100 Snubfins, apparently the largest known group in Australia. Right on our doorstep. I can’t believe I didn’t know we had a new species of dolphin in Roebuck Bay, recognised by scientists as recently as 2005. Isn’t that incredible that in our world there are still new discoveries? They look so different – similar to the Irrawaddy dolphin. A big boofy head – that only a mother would love and they seem quite shy. They are not speedy like other dolphins – they bob around on the surface, gliding along slowly feeding. Probably hoping not to bump into anything, as the Roebuck Bay water is that beautiful azure blue with very low visibility, hence their large head for good sonar abilities.

Tides

The tides in Broome are among the biggest in the world. The rise and fall of the tide creates a beautiful rhythm to the day and is an integral part of our lives in Broome. We are on a peninsula surrounded by water and it affects our lives constantly. To walk along the beach, boating, fishing, looking for dinosaur footprints or finding the Flying Boat wrecks you really do need to have an understanding of how the tides work. The tide moves in for six hours and then out for six hours. It alternates between a NEAP tide (small movement of water) and a SPRING tide (large movement of water). All controlled by the moon phase.

Learn how to read the tide chart – the number on the left is the time of day, the number on the right is the measurement of the tide. Take the highest number away from the smallest and this gives you a good indication of the movement of water. Neap tide has 2 to 3 metres of movement and a spring tide has 6 to10 metres of movement. High tide on a neap is early-mid morning and early-mid evening, whilst high tide on a Spring is midday and midnight! Yes, I know it is a bit complex but I assure you that if you get to understand the tides – you will always be safe.

Help is on the Way!

96

Imagine the huge sense of relief you would feel, if in trouble at sea, as a rescue boat approaches to give you a hand. Broome Sea Rescue receives over 60 calls for help each year from people who are in trouble on the water. Problems range from a small fuel issue to a fatal accident, and everything in between. It is all run by volunteers. Brett Winfield, Commander of Broome Volunteer Sea Rescue, reckons there are a couple of things you can do to ensure your safety before venturing out onto the waters around Broome.  Check the weather and wind report for the day.  Know the tides: you don’t want to be stranded.  Ensure all your safety equipment – flares, EPIRB and life jackets are in date and functional.

  

Check your boat is mechanically sound. Have enough fuel for the return journey, plus some more. Tell someone where you are going and what time you expect to return. If you don’t check in on time, ensure they act on it.  Take your mobile phone and keep it dry. Remember you could be out of range.  A working UHF radio is best. For the full story go to www.uniquelybroome.com and read about their new Sea Rescue building, their state of the art boat and how you can become involved. You could save someone's life.

Raw Bush Honey

While courting his wife 36 years ago, Dave Appleby recalls being out in the bush with Dianne and her mother. “The old girl would show us how they got honey from the stingless native bees. They used to put it on kids’ sores and take it for stomach ailments and coughs, which they called ‘cold sick’. She called the saltwater melaleuca the medicine tree.” said Dave. Little did he know that these outings would eventually lead him to bee keeping himself, years later. “I never forgot what she said and about five years ago a friend gave me a hive. Sadly, it failed. I decided I needed to learn more. This was a fascinating world and working with bees made me believe more in creation than evolution. Bees have such an amazing system, I refuse to believe it just happened by chance.”

A Typical Broome Story

John Beadle arrived in Broome in 1995, intending to stay for a just a short time.

108

“I was backpacking and arrived in Broome with no money. I thought it was about time I went back to being a vet. I caught up with Dave Morrell, the local veterinarian to see if he had some work and though he had nothing at the time he asked where I was staying.” John was returning to Melbourne for his father’s 60th, with no plans to return to Broome. On the morning of his flight Dave Morrell wandered into the Last Resort .

“We shared a coffee and he offered me a job. He’d had an argument with one of his vets the previous night – so there was a job available if I wanted. He flew me back from Melbourne and I did a two month locum at the Broome Veterinary Clinic. If Dave had arrived one day later, the story would be different,” said John. For John’s story - go to uniquelybroome.com and find Kimberley Stories.

Did you know that Broome and the Kimberley coastline, is the major highway for Humpback Whales? This is where their calves are born and fattened in readiness for their long journey south to the Antarctic. Between June and October you can see them on the horizon, or sometimes they wander into the port area or closer into the shoreline, teaching their young how to become whales.
