Focus on Passive Smoking in Pets ll Sma al Anim ital Hosp d Fun
This newsletter has a special focus on our James Herriot Scholarship Fund and Glasgow’s links with Alf Wight, aka James Herriot, a veterinary surgeon who graduated from Glasgow Vet School in 1939. As James Herriot he wrote a number of best-selling books about his experiences of working as a vet in the Yorkshire Dales. 2016 has a special significance as it marks the 100th anniversary of his birth. I studied at Glasgow Vet School with his son, Jim Wight, a life-long friend who chose to become a Vet like his dad. I have many memories of visiting Jim at their home in Thirsk in the 1960s, with Alf writing in front of the TV about his experiences of being a vet that went on to become best-selling books and the popular television series All Creatures Great & Small. Our feature on the James Herriot Scholarship Fund on Pages 4 and 5 of this newsletter explains how it supports and inspires our students, and enables life-changing innovation and discovery in the health and wellbeing of animals. Our specially selected James Herriot Scholars have undertaken varied and important research into the health of canines, equids and cattle. Without support from the fund research projects like these simply would not happen. Our sincere and grateful thanks to everyone who chooses to support the Vet School. I hope that Glasgow will continue to benefit from your commitment in the months and years ahead.
Professor Peter Holmes BVMS OBE FRCVS FRSE
Chair, The Vet Fund 2
The Vet fund has provided funding for the Small Animal Hospital’s Professor Clare Knottenbelt and Dr Lisa Boden to conduct an online survey of pet owners to establish people’s attitudes to the issue of passive smoking.
The survey will tell us how pet owners feel about the issue being raised. A further questionnaire for vets will be launched in November. Together they will allow us to establish appropriate ways of raising awareness among vets and pet owners.
Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke has been shown to increase the risks of various diseases in pets. Despite this, owners are rarely asked about their pets smoke exposure during routine health screens or annual vaccination visits at their local veterinary practice.
You can participate by visiting the URL below. Remember to provide an email address if you’d like to hear the results.

Meet Jake!
Weip Equiners Cent e re
Cover Star on the Road to Recovery Our cover star Jake was admitted to the Weiper’s Equine Centre Hospital for three days in June to have a mass removed, but after discovering that the mass was much larger and more complex than initially expected, his stay was extended to eleven days. Jake’s owner Kirsty was relieved to receive daily updates from the Hospital, and told us: ‘The nurses were arguing over who would get to take Jake for his walks and it would seem that he was very popular! It was a great comfort to us to know that he was being so well cared for’. Jake is now back at home and recovering well, and is thankfully getting back to his cheeky self again!
‘We cannot praise the Equine Hospital highly enough and we are so very grateful for all they did for Jake.’ Kirsty Sinclair Jake’s Owner

A Bequest for Ruby Lillias Williamson has chosen to leave a gift in her will to support the Small Animal Hospital Fund in memory of her beloved Boxer, Ruby (right). In 2008 Ruby was adopted by Lillias from Boxer Welfare Scotland. Ruby was a loving, friendly dog who held a place in many people’s hearts. Lillias’ friends recall Ruby looking after the other dogs in the park, jumping into the car for treats
and playing with the little ones. She was also loved dearly by Lillias’ neighbours, Jillian and her daughter Grace. Ruby visited the Vet School for various illnesses and was very popular with staff. Sadly she passed away in October 2015. Ruby is missed by Lillias and all who knew her. It is fitting that a gift in Ruby’s name will help support future generations of vets and the animals in their care.

100 Years of James Herriot
Glasgow Veterinary College circa 1930, where Alf Wight studied. Painted by Angus Dunn.
This year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of our most famous alumni. Alf Wight (pictured above), who wrote as James Herriot, graduated from Glasgow Veterinary College (pictured above right), now part of the University, in 1939. He spent most of his career as a vet in a rural practice in Thirsk, close to the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, but found fame as the author of a series of semi-autobiographical books which went on to spawn two films and the hugely popular BBC TV series, All Creatures Great and Small. Alf took the pseudonym ‘James Herriot’ to avoid breaking regulations on advertising which the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons had in place at that time. He chose the name after attending a football match in which the Scotland internationalist Jim Herriot played in goal for Birmingham City. Alf was awarded an OBE in 1979, and the James Herriot Library at Glasgow Vet School is named in his honour.

A Significant Milestone for the James Herriot Scholarship Fund The James Herriot Scholarship Fund was established in 2012, with the blessing of Alf Wight’s family. The Fund supports veterinary students at the University of Glasgow by funding specially selected James Herriot Scholars to undertake varied, important and potentially-life changing work. The Fund itself is supported by the generosity of our donors, and it is appropriate that, in this centenary year of Alf’s birth, we are able to announce that £100,000 has now been raised through the fund, to further its work. These donations mean that our James Herriot Scholars are able to carry out much-needed research in their own specialist fields. They are Nuria Canedo (Equine), Natalie Hutchison (Small Animal), Mark Spilman (Farm Animal), Elspeth Waugh (Small Animal).
Not only are their studies improving the health and well-being of animals, but the Fund also enables these early career researchers to undertake vital work that would otherwise not have been possible. This further enhances Glasgow’s reputation as an internationally recognised centre of excellence. Nuria picked Glasgow for her PhD due to the expertise of the academic staff. She says, ‘The James Herriot Fund to me means possibilities and opportunities. I’d like to say a big “thank you”; without this support I would not have been able to finish my project. The results are already having an impact.’ Together, our students, our research facilities and our buildings make the Vet School the envy of the world. We hope you feel inspired to support this very valuable fund.
