Supporting tomorrow’s sporting stars
Unlocking Glasgow’s hidden histories The Chancellor’s Fund has awarded £2,500 to the School of Geographical & Earth Sciences to produce a booklet which documents the important role played by community and workplace organisers in shaping Glasgow. The Banner Tales of Glasgow is a collaborative project involving the University, Glasgow Museums and the GMB trade union which showcases images and slogans from Glasgow’s rich culture of community and workplace organising. Many people with direct experience have shared their stories, with the project giving voice to the campaigns and struggles of Glasgow’s trade unionists and activists. The project centred around four participatory workshops in Nitshill, Castlemilk, Barmulloch and Govan. Banners were brought from Glasgow Museums’ collections to local communities for public viewing and discussion, and those involved were invited to share their experiences.
The Banner Tales of Glasgow booklet contains testimonies of trade unionists and other political activists in Glasgow reflecting on how banners were used to challenge injustices. The images and slogans on the banners combine to shape alternative values, visions and pride in work and neighbourhood, while often at the same time challenging injustices. Fiona Hayes, Social History Curator for Glasgow Museums, said: ‘For Glasgow Museums the Banner Tales project has had significant impact. It is the means of putting the voice of people who made and used the banners into Glasgow Museums’ records to be linked to the banners for present and future generations.’
Welcome from the Chancellor It has been an exciting time for the University in recent months, with our researchers being at the forefront of major scientific and medical discoveries. On 11 February the discovery of gravitational waves was announced. University researchers played a key role over several decades in supporting the worldwide effort to make this groundbreaking discovery. We have also made major breakthroughs in the area of pancreatic cancer, offering new opportunities to treat the disease which may prove to be of great benefit to society. Your gifts to the Chancellor’s Fund support innovative projects that enrich the student experience, support excellence in research and teaching and enhance the physical and cultural heritage of the University. As ever, thank you for your generosity and support. Gifts from alumni and friends really do make a difference.
Professor Kenneth Calman Chancellor
Tomorrow’s sporting stars Some of the University’s most talented athletes are to benefit from an award of £4,500 from the Chancellor’s Fund. The Sports Bursary programme helps gifted student athletes to achieve their potential in combining sporting excellence with high academic achievement. One of the programme’s beneficiaries, psychology student Rachel Hannen (pictured on the front cover), is following in the footsteps of former curling bursar Lauren Gray. Rachel, who won a silver medal in European Senior Women’s Curling in 2015, has been a keen curler from a young age. She says the Sports Bursary programme has proved invaluable to her, helping her to succeed at top level in her chosen field.
Previous recipients of the sports bursary over the last four years of the programme include Olympic and Winter Olympic medallists such as Emily Maguire, who graduated with First Class Honours in Mathematics & Statistics and was part of the GB hockey team at the London 2012 Olympics. The Sports Bursary programme allows exceptional, talented athletes to continue to train at a high level while undertaking full-time study. Your continued support will make a significant difference in attracting top-class athletes and gifted students to the University in the future.
Workshop with a carnival atmosphere The School of Modern Languages & Cultures was awarded a grant of £3,250 to host a Brazilian workshop, culminating in a Brazilian festival.
MAKING LIFE-CHANGING TRAVEL POSSIBLE In May 2015, the Chancellor’s Fund for Sport was awarded £5,000 to give students the opportunity to take part in exceptional sport and recreation trips and gain valuable transferable skills. Since 2003 over 400 students have benefited from this fund and last year it allowed the University Canoe Club to embark on a trip of a lifetime. Twelve members of the club travelled to L’Argentière in the French Alps to hone their kayaking skills, and developed essential safety, rescue and river leadership skills. The Chancellor’s Fund made the trip more affordable and therefore more inclusive for all club members. Many students have reported back that their confidence has increased since taking part in the trip. Club member Fran Bamber said: ‘The trip hugely improved
the team’s confidence and skills, and was a great experience of a different kind of river and paddling style than we have ever experienced in Scotland.’ Another group of students took part in an expedition to the King’s Trail in the Arctic Circle, and to Lofoten in Norway, where they visited a Sami camp to learn about traditional survival methods. The Chancellor’s Fund for Sport offers students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in extraordinary projects, enhancing their cultural experience and supporting the next generation of intrepid trailblazers.
In order to engage and inspire students across all disciplines, the school developed eight workshops on Brazilian cultural history, language, key figures and musical styles of Brazil for those interested in learning more about Brazilian music and culture. The workshops allowed students from Brazil the opportunity to meet others in the community and share their culture while having the chance to practise their English. A further celebration of Brazilian culture was organised in the form of a Brazilian festival held in February, where staff and students attended various dance performances and taster sessions, including capoeira, forró and samba, as well as enjoying food and drink tasting at the Queen Margaret Union. The workshop allowed Brazilian students and researchers to integrate further into the local community, gave Portuguese students in the school the chance to practise their own language skills, and succeeded in promoting Brazilian culture to a wider audience.
First Chemistry Challenge goes with a bang The Chancellor’s Fund awarded the School of Chemistry £686 to organise a Chemistry Challenge for undergraduate students. A new initiative in the School of Chemistry has proved so successful that it has been used as an outreach activity to school pupils in the Glasgow area. The ‘Chemistry Challenge’ is a project designed to give third- and fourth-year students the opportunity to interact and socialise with one another, improving peer relations while enhancing chemistry knowledge and developing transferable skills. The inaugural Chemistry Challenge was held in autumn 2015, consisting of a lab-based practical activity followed by a quiz. The teams were made up of
enthusiastic students plus a very brave team of University staff. Dr Ciorsdaidh Watts was one of those assessing performance. ‘I really enjoyed being a judge for the performance of fellow academics during the lab challenge,’ she said. ‘Let’s just say the students excelled.’ Following its success, it is hoped that the Chemistry Challenge will become an annual event for the School of Chemistry, with the current third-year students acting as ambassadors for the Challenge in the future.
