An enduring partnership Few working relationships can boast a duration of this length. The connection between the University and Santander Bank dates back to 1871 when Eduardo López-Dóriga, the son of one of the founding fathers of Santander Bank, Antonio López-Dóriga y Aguirre, came from Spain to study at Glasgow.
Welcome from the Director
‘It is wonderful that this relationship is alive today and I hope that it will continue to flourish over the years to come.’ Principal Anton Muscatelli
Readers will see that much of this edition of Giving to Glasgow is dedicated to articles about scholarships. Education is one of the most powerful tools for changing lives, and gifts to the Scholarships Fund have offered this possibility to many talented students.
Almost 140 years later, in 2010, Glasgow became a partner university in the Santander Universities scheme, which provides support for higher education across the world. During this five-year partnership, the University has been the grateful beneficiary of over £800,000 in support.
By creating opportunities they would not otherwise have, these gifts will ensure students have the chance to unlock their potential and realise their dreams.
Established in 1996 by then Chairman of Santander, Emilio Botín, Santander Universities was created to support the communities in which Santander Bank operates. The scheme now has partner universities in 20 different countries and has donated over €1 billion to support higher education.
The University has a number of scholarships available to students from our general Scholarships Fund, Travel Scholarship Fund and Talent Scholarship Fund. The stories behind the scholarships bear testament to the strong emotions felt by graduates and the people of Glasgow towards the University. Scholarships provide students with the chance to do amazing things and to undertake life-changing experiences. Every donation makes a difference and allows students to seek out new opportunities and challenges, inspiring students to change the world. So thank you to everyone who has donated to the University’s Scholarship Funds.
Cathy Bell Director, Development & Alumni Office
To celebrate the generous support Santander Universities has provided for Glasgow, including scholarships, internships, student enterprise and the University’s Stirling Maxwell research project, Santander Universities was this year added to the University’s Roll of Benefactors.
Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Anton Muscatelli, said: ‘The Roll of Benefactors honours all those who have shown exceptional generosity to the University since its founding in 1451. The breadth and scale of support that Santander Universities has provided Glasgow with over the last five years is remarkable, so I am delighted to be able to recognise this through our Roll of Benefactors.’ Simon Bray, Director, Santander Universities UK, added: ‘At Santander we hope to have made a difference to the University of Glasgow community. Our funding supports UK students and researchers but also entrepreneurs and international students and, most important of all, gives a vital helping hand to those who have the drive and motivation but lack that little bit of extra financial support needed to reach their goals. Seeing beneficiaries achieving their goals is the best reward that all of us at Santander could have.’

OK Giving the gift of travel Making study abroad a reality
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we were proud to launch the John Brown Travel Scholarship Fund in the School of Law. This fund will help to ensure that study abroad is available to all, irrespective of financial background. Patrick Stewart LLB (1994) is now the Director of Legal & Business Affairs at Manchester United Football Club, but during his time at Glasgow he was the first student in the School of Law to embark on a study abroad trip with the Erasmus programme. Through the programme Patrick travelled to the University of Mainz in Germany in 1991, where he studied Law through German for a year, improving his language skills, studying new aspects of law, and stepping outside his comfort zone. He believes it was this experience that gave him a unique advantage in his graduate job applications and he hasn’t looked back since. The cost of undertaking study abroad can be high and many students with limited financial means struggle to participate in these transformative experiences. In memory of John Brown, key champion of study abroad at the School of Law, the University established the John Brown Travel Scholarship Fund in November 2014. This summer, Patrick signed up to give a full John Brown Travel Scholarship annually, giving lifechanging support to future generations for years to come. Patrick is joined by a number of other very generous Law alumni who have signed up to give to the John Brown Travel Scholarship Fund through a recent fundraising appeal. As a result of this generosity and commitment, we are delighted to be able to offer two full John Brown Travel Scholarships every year for the next five years. Staff and students of the School of Law would like to say a huge thank you to Patrick and all donors to this lifechanging Travel Fund. www.glasgow.ac.uk/johnbrownscholarship
From Hong Kong to Glasgow
We are pleased to announce the establishment of the McAulay Scholarship, which will support a student from Hong Kong throughout their course of study at the University. The establishment of this major new award has been made possible by the generosity of the Hong Kong-based Ronald and Rita McAulay Foundation. Mr McAulay is himself a Glasgow alumnus, graduating MA in 1956. Michelle Lee, the first McAulay Scholar, has arrived in Glasgow and will be studying Veterinary Medicine. ‘I was absolutely delighted to be awarded this scholarship,’ she said. ‘International student fees are expensive and the costs of travelling from Hong Kong and living in Glasgow are very high. While I was hesitating to take up my place due to the financial burden it would place on my parents and me, the support from the Ronald and Rita McAulay Foundation encouraged me to do so. Receiving the scholarship allows me to concentrate on my studies in Veterinary Medicine and enjoy school life. I am very grateful for this opportunity and looking forward to my studies over the next five years.’ Frances Shepherd, Vice-President, International Development, said: ‘This fantastic new scholarship will enable the University to attract the very best students from Hong Kong and enhance their experience while here. We know that travelling so far from home can be daunting for many. This scholarship will minimise any financial worries for Michelle, allowing her to concentrate on her studies and make the most of her time in Glasgow.’

Your valued legacies On 12 November we welcomed over 50 alumni and friends to the University’s prestigious Senate Room for the launch of the 1451 Society.
Greening the desert The School of Engineering has appointed George Knox (pictured) as the new Henry Baxter Scholar. The Henry Baxter Scholarship was established thanks to the generosity of alumna Catherine Black, and will provide vital funding to support George through his PhD at the University. Working alongside Professor of Engineering Sciences Colin McInnes, George will explore recent ideas for delivering new land for agriculture and creating carbon sinks. Professor McInnes said: ‘The Henry Baxter Scholarship will support the first project of a new programme of research to address long-term questions for the human future. Working with colleagues, we will investigate new ideas to push back desert margins through engineering interventions.’ • For more on pioneering engineering sciences research, contact Richard McConnell, richard.mcconnell@ glasgow.ac.uk.
Hosted by the Chancellor, Sir Kenneth Calman, the theme of the event discussed the important contribution that bequests have made to the history of the University. PhD student and Hunterian Associate Ruth Turner gave a presentation on ‘Remembering the Old College’ about its fascinating history and how the University preserved its history and identity during the transition to the Gilmorehill campus of today.
to recognise the special commitment of alumni and friends who have chosen to support the University through a planned gift in their will. If you have already made a gift in your will, do let us know so that you can be included in future special events and communications. • For more information, contact Barrie Bryson, +44 (0)141 330 6886, barrie.bryson@glasgow.ac.uk.
Guests also enjoyed a rare opportunity to view the signature of Charles I on his subscription of £200 to the then ‘College building fund’, a pledge that was ultimately fulfilled many years later by Oliver Cromwell. The Principal, Professor Anton Muscatelli, launched the 1451 Society at a similar event at the Caledonian Club in London held on 18 November 2015. Thirty alumni and friends heard about the history of the University from the Old College to the acquisition of the Western Infirmary site and our exciting plans for the radical redevelopment of the Gilmorehill campus. We have established the 1451 Society
Inspiring couple commemorated As gifted teachers who believed wholeheartedly in the fundamental importance of English language and literature as cornerstones of a rounded education, alumni Walter and Anne Wyatt shared a lifelong interest in young people and inspired generations of school pupils and students through their wisdom and generosity of spirit. To celebrate their memory, their children Margaret, Diana and Roger – all themselves alumni – have endowed a prize for postgraduate students in the field of English Literature. Walter Edward Wyatt graduated with a BSc in 1926 and an MA (Hons) in English Language and Literature in 1928, while Anne Bruce Wyatt (née Jutson) graduated with an MA (Hons) in English Language and Literature in 1943. Both Walter and Anne were awarded bursaries to study at Glasgow, and Anne went on to win the Bradley medal, which is awarded annually to the most distinguished graduate in English Literature. 4
Walter taught English in a number of Glasgow schools, becoming Principal Teacher of English at Whitehill Secondary School and ultimately Headmaster of Hillhead High School. Anne also taught English at what was then Glasgow High School for Girls, before taking up a post as Lecturer and, in due course, Senior Lecturer in English at Jordanhill College of Education. The Walter and Anne Wyatt Memorial Prize has been created to encourage and motivate postgraduate students in the field of English Literature and will be awarded to a student on a postgraduate taught course in English Literature or Creative Writing for an outstanding dissertation or submission of written work. The Prize will consist of an annual award of around £500 in perpetuity, along with a book chosen by the school. The first award will be made at the end of the 2015–16 academic year.
Capturing the cream of the crop
Remembering Jessica
Two recent scholarships in the College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences have enabled us to recruit exceptional postgraduate students and present ourselves as a University that rewards excellent academic achievement and supports students wherever possible.
‘ We are so pleased that Jessica chose to remember the University in this way. Her passion for creative writing was forged during her time at Glasgow, and we draw great comfort from the knowledge that her scholarships will be helping other students to establish themselves as authors. This ongoing link with the University is something we greatly value.’ Michael Yorke, Jessica’s father Alumna Jessica Elizabeth Yorke developed a passion for writing throughout her English Literature degree from 1995 to 1999. As a student she regularly contributed to the student publications Glasgow Guardian and GUM, and during a year abroad also wrote for the UCLA newspaper, the Daily Bruin, under the mentorship of a journalist from the Los Angeles Times. When Jessica sadly died in 2014 following a battle with lung cancer, her family wished to celebrate her memory through the establishment of a scholarship to encourage others who shared her passion for writing.
Jessica’s parents, Michael and Patricia Yorke, chose to create the Jessica Yorke Scholarship to provide an award of £1,000 each year to students wishing to take up opportunities that will help them to develop their skills in this field. Jessica so fondly remembered her time at Glasgow that she also chose to leave a bequest gift to the University to celebrate the affection she felt for her days as a student. • For more information on establishing a scholarship contact Kate Richardson, +44 (0)141 330 1867, kate.richardson@ glasgow.ac.uk.
The William Cullen Postgraduate Scholarship Fund in Medicine has attracted students in Cancer Sciences, Cardiovascular Sciences, Sport & Exercise Science & Medicine, Medical Genetics and Clinical Trials & Stratified Medicine. Meanwhile, the success of the James Herriot Scholarship Fund, launched to celebrate the School of Veterinary Medicine’s 150th anniversary in 2012, has led to the award of five scholarships to postgraduate students that provide essential support for their chosen research programmes and enhance Glasgow’s research portfolio and reputation. Through both of these scholarships, we aim to inspire excellent students to join us, no matter what their economic background, to discover and share knowledge that can change the world. • To support the William Cullen Postgraduate Scholarship Fund in Medicine, contact Laura Morton, +44 (0)141 330 3878, laura.morton@glasgow.ac.uk; for the James Herriot Scholarship Fund, contact Sarah Hunter, +44 (0)141 330 7145, sarah.hunter@glasgow.ac.uk.
A big thank you! The Development & Alumni Office would like to say a huge thank you to all alumni and supporters who took the time to talk with our student callers during our 2014–15 telephone campaign. Our callers really enjoyed sharing Glasgow experiences and memories with you. Thank you to all of you who agreed to make a donation to support initiatives that make a huge difference to the student experience at Glasgow and provide essential research that has a positive and wide-reaching effect upon society. Through your generosity, the 2014–15 Telephone Campaign raised almost £180,000 from over 700 donations. Since the Telephone Campaign began in 2003, over £2.75m has been raised to support capital campaigns or to provide much-needed support to Universitywide projects. Thank you to all who have donated during this time – a strong alumni base is the foundation of any
university and the goodwill we receive from our graduates is an inspiration and an encouragement to all who work and study here. As well as an opportunity for alumni to support the University, the Telephone Campaign gives you a chance to have your say about the alumni services we provide. Receiving feedback and comments helps us to develop what we offer and to plan for the future. Our calling team consists of 26 current students, all of whom look forward to discussing your experiences after graduation, as well as current developments on campus, and answering your questions. They are always fascinated to hear about your own memories of the University and the city. • For more information on the Telephone Campaign and how you could help, please see www.glasgow.ac.uk/ telephonecampaign.
