GivingtoGlasgow The fundraising magazine for alumni and friends of the University of Glasgow Issue 29 January 2017
You made it happen We’ve made major breakthroughs in leukaemia and pancreatic cancer – thanks to your support
A message from the Director It continues to be an exciting time at the University as we develop plans for the former Western Infirmary site. We plan to invest in developing new buildings and bringing our historic and iconic buildings up to a standard which supports the needs of current and future students and researchers. Alongside this we continue to provide opportunities for world-changing education, as we believe that every student should have the chance to change the world regardless of their background.
World-changing scholarships We’re continuing to grow scholarship funding for students in a number of areas including sports, internships and postgraduate studies. Some of these scholarships are highlighted in this issue. Scholarships not only provide students with the chance to do amazing things and to undertake life-changing experiences, but also help to inspire them to change the world.
You will see from the stories in this edition the impact that you have helped to deliver and how Glasgow continues to lead with world-changing education and research. Everyone who gives a donation makes a difference – so thank you to everyone who has donated to the University.
Cathy Bell Director, Development & Alumni Office
Composer supports music scholars Film and TV music composer John Lunn (BMus 1979) has established an annual Postgraduate Scholarship in Music. The John Lunn Postgraduate Music Scholarship has been created to encourage and motivate music students who may not consider studying at postgraduate level without financial support. The first annual scholarship of around £5,000 will be awarded for the 2018–19 academic year. After graduation John studied experimental music at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has since become a worldfamous film and TV music composer with credits including Downton Abbey, for which he was awarded two Primetime Emmy Awards. John has also been nominated for two BAFTAs and an Ivor Novello award. John returned to campus last year for a halls of residence alumni reunion, and Dr Björn Heile and Professor John Butt were delighted to give him a tour of the Music rooms. John has generously agreed to hold future guest lectures and composition masterclasses at Glasgow.
SHARING MEMORIES, SHAPING FUTURES This autumn our team of bright and enthusiastic students spoke to our alumni and friends, from Glasgow to London, and from the US to Canada, during our latest telephone campaign. Our student callers enjoyed hearing about your time at Glasgow, and sharing what life as a student is like today and how alumni can make a difference here. From creating once-ina-lifetime opportunities for students to enriching their experience and making the next big discoveries that could change the world – our alumni make all of this possible. 2
John said, “Over the years, as my career evolved, I came more and more to appreciate my time studying music at Glasgow. The sheer breadth and scope of experience and opportunity I had during that time were the main factors enabling me to establish myself in the world of TV and film music, and for that I am indebted.” •• For further information about giving to arts, please contact Lucinda Keith, email: lucinda.keith@glasgow.ac.uk, tel: +44 (0)141 330 7148.
Legacy of first female professor
LANDMARK DONATION FOR EDUCATION We were delighted recently to receive one of the largest donations in the history of the College of Social Sciences. The very generous gift of £150,000 was given to the School of Education by graduate Isabel Nisbet (MA 1972, MPhil 2002). Isabel is the daughter of Stanley Nisbet, the University’s first Professor of Education, and has a very significant high-level career in education. She has worked closely with the School of Education and the Development & Alumni Office to identify activities and
opportunities she is keen to support and that would have been important to her late father. Isabel’s gift will enable the school to advance some significant activities and enhance our reputation even further. Education at Glasgow is ranked second in the UK (to Cambridge) of 77 competing schools/faculties, according to the Complete University Guide 2017. Isabel’s generous donation will be used to establish four projects. •• A full Nisbet PhD Scholarship in the Philosophy of Education from 2017–18. •• The launch of an international educational assessment network of small nations. •• At least six Nisbet Postgraduate Scholarships for School of Education students in financial need. •• The development of an online Masters of Museum Education programme. Isabel said, “My father would be delighted to see the interesting and important work that the School of Education is doing, and I’m pleased to have the chance to be involved.” •• For further information about giving to social sciences, please contact Lucinda Keith, email: lucinda.keith@glasgow. ac.uk, tel: +44 (0)141 330 7148.
This year we welcomed back the 1960s GU Swim Team for a sponsored swim which raised over £12,000. All the proceeds will go towards groundbreaking priority projects within the Institute of Health & Wellbeing.
The institute’s research includes studies into mental health, obesity, smoking and community health, making an important contribution towards improving public health and wellbeing in Scotland and further afield. Philip Leckie, who graduated in 1969, said, “The swimmers enjoyed university sport all those years ago, and greatly benefited from it. Now we want to give something back to our alma mater.”
Recently, we were delighted to receive one such gift from Emerita Professor Delphine Parrott – Glasgow’s first female professor. A renowned immunologist, Professor Parrott was a senior lecturer in the Department of Bacteriology from 1967 until 1973, when she received a personal chair. From 1980 she was head of department and Gardiner Professor of Immunology until her retirement in 1990. Professor Parrott directed her gift to support the Chancellor’s Fund. Her gift will enable two projects which will have real impact and enrich the student experience. •• A medical student conference encouraging involvement in projects to improve the health of those affected by conflict, poverty and the refugee crisis. •• Travel scholarships to encourage students who would otherwise find it financially difficult to take part in short study abroad opportunities offered by European partner institutions. Virginia Kennedy is her cousin. “I know Delphine had very fond memories of her time at the University as she used to talk about it a lot. I’m sure she wished to give her legacy in order to give something back to young people at this stage of their academic explorations and interests.”
SWIMMING AHEAD
The team are based all over the world but have kept in touch over the years and enjoyed many reunions in Glasgow. In June, 18 swimmers, all now aged around 70 years, took on the challenge of swimming one mile each to raise money for the institute.
Many of our Glasgow family choose to support future generations by remembering the University in their will. Every gift in every will makes a difference, whether you make a modest gift or a percentage of what remains after you have looked after those closest to you.
•• If you are considering leaving a gift to the University in your will, our Development Officer for Legacies, Mrs Barrie Bryson, would be delighted to talk with you about your wishes and intentions, email: barrie.bryson@glasgow.ac.uk, tel:+44 (0)141 330 6886.

THANKS TO YOU We’ve had tremendous support from our alumni and friends over the past years. Through your generous contributions you’ve funded many world-changing initiatives, from medical research to student travel. On these pages we highlight some of these inspirational stories – made possible, because of you.
You’ve supported vet scholars Supported by the generosity of our donors, over £100,000 has been raised for the James Herriot Scholarship Fund since its establishment in 2012. The fund supports our veterinary students by funding specially selected scholars to carry out varied, important and potentially life-changing work. This funding landmark appropriately comes in the year we have been celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of our alumnus Alf Wight, better known as Yorkshire vet and author James Herriot. The fund is named in his honour with the blessing of his family. Donations mean that our scholars are able to carry out work in their specialist fields. Not only are their studies improving the health and wellbeing of animals, but the fund also enables these early career researchers to undertake vital work that would otherwise not have been possible – further enhancing our reputation as an internationally recognised centre of excellence. Two of our James Herriot scholars are Nuria Canedo (pictured left) and Natalie Hutchison
YOU’VE SUPPORTED INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL
(right). Nuria chose Glasgow for her PhD because of the expertise of the academic staff. Her work is concerned with sarcoids, a common tumour in horses. The outcome of her research will not only increase our understanding of the biology of equine sarcoids but may lead to the development of novel therapies. Nuria said, “The James Herriot Scholarship Fund to me means possibilities and opportunities. I’d like to say a big thank you; without this support I would not have been able to finish my project. The results have been published and are already having an impact.” •• For further information about our James Herriot Scholarship Fund, please contact Sarah Hunter, email: sarah.hunter@glasgow. ac.uk, tel: +44 (0)141 330 7145.
YOU’VE SUPPORTED EQUINE CARE
Last year some 3,000 of our students had an international experience in locations across the world. The generosity of our alumni and donors helps to provide the financial support needed for more students to take up international opportunities – which enhance not only their academic experience but their employability too. Our aim is to have 20% of our students study or work abroad by 2020.
Donations to the Weipers Equine Fund support the work of the Weipers Centre Equine Hospital, which offers the highest standards of veterinary care through the expertise of its internationally recognised staff and the most advanced diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical techniques.
Our alumni understand better than anyone the impact of an international experience – especially those who came from overseas to study or who now live abroad. Dr Victor Lim (MBChB 1993) came to Glasgow from Singapore to study medicine. “The University has given me so much. Just as my time in Glasgow made me a more well-rounded, and hopefully better person, I hope that my support for the travel scholarship will inspire someone else in the same way.”
Thanks to the gifts received, we have been able to fund vital studies and buy important equipment, including a medical laser providing state-of-the-art therapy for horses affected by disease of the upper respiratory tract and the eyes, as well as some common skin diseases.
International experiences, like Dr Lim’s, are invaluable for our students. This year, the Dr Victor Lim Travel Scholarship was awarded to Anna Elms, as she embarked on a year of study at Kyoto University in Japan. Anna said, “Receiving the scholarship was brilliant as it provides me with the means to explore some of this beautiful country. The exchange itself is a wonderful opportunity; I can make friends with students from many countries and experience a completely different culture and style of teaching. In the future I intend to work in Japan, so it’s great to have a chance to see what living here would be like!”
Donations have provided funding for a number of research projects, including Dr Marcello Riggio’s work on equine periodontal disease and Dr John Marshall’s research into equine influenza. These projects will allow the development of better diagnostics and treatment strategies to reduce the impact of these conditions.

YOU’VE SUPPORTED CANCER RESEARCH
Your support has had a transformative impact on cancer research at Glasgow. Below we highlight some of this groundbreaking work – made possible through the generosity of our supporters.
Leukaemia research breakthrough The Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre opened in 2008 after fundraising by the University in collaboration with Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. Over £2.6m was raised in six years through the commitment and generosity of more than 1,800 donors and supporters. Two recent major breakthroughs have been published, with clinical trials the next step. In a six-year study, a team of scientists at the centre, working in partnership with the University of Manchester, has revealed an ‘Achilles heel’ of Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) and found drugs to successfully target this weakness and eradicate the disease in laboratory models. These exciting results have potential implications for other cancers. In a second breakthrough, research teams led by Dr David Vetrie and Professor Tessa Holyoake believe they have found a new drug that could lead to a cure for CML by killing CML stem cells. Dr Vetrie said, “This discovery, based on seven years of experimental work, is a great example of precision medicine – finding drugs that target only the CML stem cells we want to kill, while leaving normal cells unharmed.”
Pancreatic cancer discovery Following the success of the £10m campaign to build a new world-class cancer research facility, the Wolfson Wohl Cancer Research Centre opened in 2014 – thanks to the generosity and dedication of Beatson Pebble Appeal supporters. A recent breakthrough reclassification of pancreatic cancer offers new opportunities to treat the disease. The study, co-led by Professor Andrew Biankin, Director of the centre, and a team at the University’s Institute of Cancer Sciences, has identified four key subtypes of pancreatic cancer – currently the fourth leading cause of cancer death in western societies – each with their own distinct clinical characteristics and differential survival outcomes. Professor Biankin said, “We are now closer to being able to provide personalised therapeutic options for individual patients and a launch pad to investigate new treatments.” •• For further information about supporting cancer sciences, please contact Catherine McGrory, email: catherine.mcgrory@glasgow.ac.uk tel: +44 (0)141 330 8007. 5
