Giving to Glasgow The fundraising magazine for alumni and friends of the University of Glasgow
Issue 24 April 2014
New scholarship fund honours former Principal The University has launched a fundraising campaign in memory of Sir Alwyn Williams, Principal of the University between 1976 and 1988, which honours his commitment to education and his passion for geology.
Former Principal Sir Alwyn Williams and his wife Joan, Lady Williams
Donations to the newly named Sir Alwyn Williams Postgraduate Scholarship Fund in Geographical & Earth Sciences will enable students studying in the field Sir Alwyn cared so much about to follow in his footsteps. Considered one of the greatest geologists of the 20th century, Sir Alwyn continued his research in this area even after taking up his role as Principal of the University in 1976. Believing that research was at the heart of the University, he led by example, spending early mornings in the lab before completing his duties as Principal. He published over 20 refereed papers and held three research grants while holding this position.
During his tenure as Principal the University underwent great change, and his ambition and drive were instrumental in breathing new life into subjects such as computing science. Professor Maggie Cusack is Head of the School of Geographical & Earth Sciences: ‘Sir Alwyn’s enthusiasm, drive and scientific rigour were inspirational and demonstrate just how much one can achieve by good planning, hard work and total lack of procrastination. I hope that our postgraduate students are inspired by his example and I think that there are lessons there for us all. I consider it a great honour that our postgraduate scholarships should bear his name.’
The Sir Alwyn WiIliams Postgraduate Scholarship Fund in Geographical & Earth Sciences will provide scholarships to some of our brightest postgraduate students. The funding will remove financial constraints as well as supporting vital research trips overseas. Previous scholarships in this area have supported research into glacial recession in Patagonia and civil organisations and the water sector in Tanzania. Sir Alwyn, sadly, passed away in 2004, followed by Lady Williams in 2012. • If you would like to support the Sir Alwyn Williams Postgraduate Fund please contact Richard McConnell on +44 (0)141 330 4302 or at richard.mcconnell@glasgow.ac.uk.
Message from the Director I particularly enjoyed reading our front page article in this latest edition of Giving to Glasgow. As I am sure many alumni will also reflect when reading this, I was thinking of how the Williamses have been very much a part of my personal University of Glasgow story. Sir Alwyn was Principal when I studied at Glasgow and still Principal when I came back to work here and he was instrumental in the formation of the University of Glasgow Trust Office (which became the Development & Alumni Office). I feel sure he would have approved, in his selfeffacing way, of this Scholarship Fund and Joan would have been delighted. Like so many people associated with the University, the Williamses gave so much and their enthusiasm and love for the University and its extended community were evident to all who knew them. The map of the world on pages 4 and 5 makes fascinating reading also and it is extraordinary to see the reach and generosity of that extended community.
Cathy Bell Director, Development & Alumni Office
Bequest to History A generous bequest of £88,000 from alumna Charlotte Stuart Nicholson will provide scholarships for History students. Mrs Nicholson’s donation is a testament to her love for the subject of History, established during her undergraduate degree at Glasgow where she graduated with an MA in History in 1957. Following her degree Mrs Nicholson taught history at St Martin’s Girls’ School in Solihull. In 1963 Mrs Nicholson’s ongoing passion for the subject led her back to the University where she took up the role of sole Library Assistant with the Department of Modern History. The bequest left to the University by Mrs Nicholson will be used to inspire the same enthusiasm she had for the subject by supporting History students at all levels of academic study. • For more information on supporting History contact Bicola Barratt-Crane at bicola.barratt-crane@glasgow.ac.uk or on +44 (0)141 330 7148. 2
Introducing our James Herriot Scholars
Left to right: Elspeth Waugh, Chris Corbett, Nuria Canedo and Natalia Hutchinson
Alf Wight, who wrote as James Herriot, is one of Glasgow’s most famous alumni, and he gave much prominence to the veterinary profession that continues today. The James Herriot Scholarship Fund was created to ensure that the University can continue to develop the clinical academic leaders of the future and train a new generation of veterinary surgeons who will be equipped to tackle future global challenges in animal health and welfare. The success of the James Herriot Scholarship Fund has enabled the School of Veterinary Medicine to award James Herriot Scholarships to four postgraduate students. They were selected so that they can continue their chosen fields of work, which will be crucial in furthering the excellent reputation of the school. The impact of gifts to this fund can be illustrated by Elspeth Waugh, one of our first James Herriot Scholars. Elspeth is in the final year of her PhD and is working on canine lymphoma. In the longer term Elspeth’s work will help provide owners with
Talent celebrated The accomplishments of over 250 of Glasgow’s brightest students were celebrated at a Talent Scholarships awards ceremony in February. Created to support academically outstanding students who would face financial difficulties attending University, the Talent Scholarship scheme helps to ensure that a world-class education is available to students from all backgrounds. Brian McBride, chairman of online fashion retailer ASOS and an alumnus of the University, congratulated the students during the ceremony and thanked the donors who support these important scholarships. Brian, who is a major supporter of the scholarship programme, said: ‘The Talent Scholarship scheme is vital in providing the opportunity
a more accurate outlook for their dogs, and help guide treatment choices. She said: ‘Funding for companion animal projects is very difficult to come by, and the money from the James Herriot Scholarship, along with some other funding, is allowing me to complete the important final phase of my PhD. I could not do this work without the James Herriot Scholarship, so I am very grateful.’ • If you would like to support the James Herriot Scholarship Fund, please contact Sarah Hunter at sarah.hunter@glasgow. ac.uk or on +44 (0)141 330 7145.
and support for some of Scotland’s most talented students to excel. Breaking the barriers of inequality in education is something I feel very strongly about and I am delighted to be in a position that I can help in some way to ensure that financial constraints are no boundary to young people achieving their potential.’ For the first time, this year 21 postgraduate students were also awarded Talent Scholarships. The extension of the scheme provides the opportunity for talented students to continue their academic career beyond their undergraduate degree and realise their full ambitions. • If you would like to make a donation to the Talent Scholarship scheme, please contact Kate Richardson at kate.richardson@glasgow.ac.uk or on +44 (0)141 330 1867.
Remembering former staff members Travelling in the Family, friends and colleagues of two much-loved former University staff members have launched fundraising campaigns in their memory.
footsteps of James Bond
Sir Fitzroy Maclean was a politician, diplomat, soldier and adventurer and is also thought to have been the inspiration behind Ian Fleming’s James Bond. He was awarded a DLitt from the University in 1969 and following his death in 1996 a fundraising campaign was launched by the University along with friends and family. This year, the scholarships created through the fundraising campaign in Sir Fitzroy’s memory have been refreshed to ensure that the changing needs of Glasgow students continue to be met. Left to right: Dr Carl Goodyear, Anne Smart and son Andrew Smart
Jack Smart was a well-known accountant in the University’s Finance Office who sadly died of bone marrow cancer 18 months ago. As he was a keen sportsman, Jack’s family chose to run the Great Scottish Half Marathon as part of a fundraising effort in his memory. Having raised over £11,000, Jack’s family donated these funds to research being conducted by Dr Carl Goodyear into myeloma at the University.
Alison Peden, an administrator within the subject of History, sadly passed away in January last year. She was considered a friend by many staff and students and they have launched a fundraising campaign to establish the Alison Peden Memorial Prize for History students who have achieved success in the face of challenges.
Jack’s widow, Anne Smart, said: ‘We miss Jack every day but we hope that by making this donation, and supporting research into myeloma, families affected by this cancer in future will stand a fighting chance of seeing their loved ones cured.’
Professor of Modern History Lynn Abrams said: ‘Alison was a particular source of support to students who experienced difficulties during the course of their studies. She was usually the first port of call when we had news, when we had a problem or when we just needed cheering up and we still miss her terribly.’
• If you would like to contribute to the fundraising effort in memory of Jack Smart please contact Laura Morton at laura. morton@glasgow.ac.uk.

Eight postgraduate scholarships and 28 travel scholarships will be available to students over the next four years aimed at encouraging the spirit of adventure and the development of new skills. Although he was initially drawn to work in academia, the crisis in Europe in the 1930s convinced Sir Fitzroy to enter the Diplomatic Service. During the decade before the outbreak of the Second World War he travelled extensively, and as a diplomat at the British Embassy in Moscow he made several notable journeys to the Caucasus and Soviet Central Asia, often shadowed by NKVD agents, the forerunners of the KGB. During the war, having joined the Cameron Highlanders, he won further renown for irregular Bond-like exploits in the Western Desert with the fledgling SAS, and as Churchill’s special envoy to Tito and the Partisans in the former Yugoslavia. Principal Professor Anton Muscatelli said: ‘These important scholarships will not only be of great benefit to our students but will be a fitting tribute to an outstanding individual who was well known across the continent as a traveller, writer, diplomat and adventurer. It is right that these scholarships should encourage the spirit of travel that Sir Fitzroy so clearly and successfully embraced.’ 3
Focusing on international fundraising The University has made further investment in international fundraising with the appointment of Fran Shepherd (pictured) as Vice-President for International Development. The small team, including International Development Officer Emma Sloan, will focus on donors and fundraising outside of the UK. Fran says of her new role: ‘Glasgow has been privileged to benefit from increasing levels of generosity from its communities around the world and we are really pleased to see Glasgow alumni getting together more across the globe. ‘There is no network quite like an alumni network: people of all ages and backgrounds, pursuing careers in diverse walks of life in hundreds of countries, all with the shared experience of studying at Glasgow. Whatever connection you hope to make, there is a good chance you can find it at a Glasgow event.’ Fran hopes that in the months and years ahead, alumni and donors will notice increased presence in their part of the world and that she will have the pleasure of meeting many of them herself. The University is also increasingly reaching out to our international alumni by telephone. In the last few years, over 7,000 alumni have been included in our campaigns. ‘As well as an opportunity for alumni to support the University, our telephone campaigns are a great way for you to share your memories of Glasgow,’ says Fran. ‘Our calling team consists of 26 current students, all of whom take pleasure in discussing your career since graduation, current developments on campus and answering any of your questions. And they are always fascinated to hear about your own experiences during your time at Glasgow.’

Our donors around the Our donors hail from all over the world and support causes at Glasgow that are important to them. With over 1,100 donors outside of the UK, our international supporters have donated almost £6m to the University. We also have more alumni associations around the world than ever before, a total of 68 groups allowing our alumni to get together across the globe. Below are just a few examples of our international donors who chose to make gifts to the University of Glasgow. We hope that wherever you are you will choose to support your alma mater. Canada Now living in British Columbia, Dr Ronald B Macleod (MBChB 1958) and his family have many connections to Glasgow. Dr Macleod’s mother, Mary Stevenson (pictured), graduated MA in 1924 and since then nine of her offspring have completed degrees at Glasgow. On behalf of the family in Scotland, Canada and Australia, Dr Macleod and his wife Mary have established scholarships for medical students in financial need and made a gift to improve facilities at Gilmorehill for the future – a legacy gift the University is most grateful for.

AAGU American Alumni of Glasgow University (AAGU) is an independent charitable corporation which allows our American alumni to make tax-deductible donations to benefit the University during their lifetime, as well as through Planned Giving. President of AAGU, Dr Melvyn Pond, manages gifts made in this way and can be contacted at Melvynpond@ aol.com. USA The opportunity to travel abroad was of real interest to Professor John Vaughn (MBChB 1944, MD 1951). After serving as a physician in India and Burma during the Second World War, he then performed medical research in Tanganyika and afterwards emigrated to the US. Upon retirement he continued to travel worldwide, teaching at medical schools in South Africa and Thailand. Now based in Georgia, Mrs Margaret Vaughn wished to establish a travel scholarship in memory of her late husband to support undergraduate medical students. Through this gift Mrs Vaughn will provide current students with the opportunities Professor Vaughn was so passionate about.
world Belgium For the past two years Chemistry graduate Peter Adye (BSc 1969), who lives in Belgium, has been contacted by a student caller during our annual Spring Telephone Campaign. Peter has enjoyed speaking with our current students, hearing the latest news from the School of Chemistry and learning more about happenings on campus. The Telephone Campaign has offered Peter the chance to reconnect with Glasgow and a simple way to support the University and its students by making an annual contribution towards the Chancellor’s Fund.

Singapore 2013 saw the first award of the travel scholarship established by Bridget Tan (MA (History of Art) 1996). Now Director of the Institute of Southeast Asian Arts & Art Galleries at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore, Bridget made the gift in tribute to her inspiring experience at Glasgow. ‘Frankly, I owe Glasgow and the History of Art department everything,’ she says. ‘It did not just provide me with an education, but made me the person I am.’
Hong Kong Now living in Hong Kong, Brian Stevenson (LLB 1965) recently chose to establish the Brian and Natalie Stevenson Talent Scholarship in perpetuity. Named after him and his daughter (pictured) the scholarship will support students in the College of Social Sciences, reflecting Brian and Natalie’s own areas of study.
