On the ball Our basketball bursaries attract and support talented athletes
A message from the Director Many of you will know that we have now formally taken possession of the Western Infirmary site adjacent to our main campus. This is truly a pivotal point in the University’s history and marks a major milestone in our vision to be known internationally as a worldclass, world-changing university.
Glasgow calling We would like to say a huge thank you to all alumni and supporters who took the time to talk with our student callers during our latest telephone campaign. Our students really enjoyed sharing Glasgow experiences and memories with you. Thank you to all of you who agreed to make a donation to support initiatives that make a big difference to the student experience and provide essential research that has a positive and wide-reaching effect upon society. Through your generosity, we raised over £225,000 from more than 500 donations.
O
ver the coming months we will reach out to you – our alumni, donors and extended Glasgow family – to tell you more about how our campus masterplan will deliver inspiring spaces and opportunities for world-changing research, teaching and learning.
World-changing education
We are inviting you to be part of our exciting £1 billion programme of investment – the most significant development of our main campus in over a century. With your help we will set a template for the universities of tomorrow so that we remain at the forefront of change, excellence and innovation for centuries to come.
World-changing campus
Your gifts will enable and inspire our:
World-changing research With your support we can bring multidisciplinary talent together to resolve some of the world’s greatest research challenges in areas spanning cancer, chronic disease, infections & immunology, gravitational waves, climate change, social justice and health & wellbeing. 2
We believe that every student should have the opportunity to change the world regardless of their background. Our aim is to nurture true talent and offer the best environment in which to do so, and your support can help us to deliver on this commitment.
With your help we can create an inspiring and diverse research and teaching environment that will support Glasgow’s world changers for the century to come while promoting the city of Glasgow as a first-choice destination for research, education and culture. As alumni, partners, donors and friends, your engagement and commitment are important elements in our success. Your continued support will help us realise our vision and ambition for tomorrow.
Cathy Bell Director, Development & Alumni Office
Gemma Elliott, Regular Giving Manager, said, ‘The generosity and support of our alumni and friends of the University has been overwhelming. Our current team of student callers have benefited greatly from the opportunity to speak to, and learn from, many of our graduates who have kindly shared their invaluable advice, inspiring stories and wonderful memories from their time at Glasgow. ‘The warmth shown by our graduates is extremely heartening and a testament to how past students support us in our aim to provide the next generation of deserving students with access to a first-class education and the opportunity to fulfil their potential.’ Since the Telephone Campaign began in 2003, over £4 million has been raised to support capital campaigns or to provide much-needed support to University-wide projects. Thank you to all who have donated during this time. •• For further information contact Gemma Elliott, email: gemma.elliott@glasgow. ac.uk, tel: +44 (0)141 330 8501.
YOUR VALUED LEGACIES All gifts to the University are very much appreciated, and bequests made in your will particularly so.

INSPIRING PUBLIC SERVICE
E
arly support from alumni and friends has enabled the John Smith Centre for Public Service to establish itself at the University. The centre, which aims to promote public service, will be a lasting, fitting and meaningful tribute to the life and work of John Smith, who was leader of the Labour Party at the time of his death in 1994. A special launch event was held at the Scotland Office, Whitehall in March. Hosted by Secretary of State for Scotland, the Rt Hon David Mundell MP, alumni and friends of the University and the centre came together to celebrate the launch and hear about the centre’s ambitious vision for its programme of activities. This includes plans to establish a Public Service Internship Programme that will support students to undertake paid work experience at leading public service institutions, opportunities that are important for academic and professional development as well as the promotion of public service vocations. Secretary of State for Justice, the Rt Hon Michael Gove MP and Lord McCluskey, one of Scotland’s leading legal figures, expressed their support for the centre, reflecting on John Smith’s own dedication to public service and the importance of inspiring our next generation of public service leaders. The launch was a successful landmark occasion and we are grateful to all those who have enabled the centre to reach this stage. We are now seeking supporters and partners to help bring the centre’s vision to life. •• For further information contact Rosemary Simm, email: rosemary.simm@glasgow. ac.uk, tel: +44 (0)141 330 4951.
‘ JOHN SMITH WAS ONE OF OUR MOST DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI. HIS INFLUENCE AND IMPACT WERE, AND ARE, PROFOUND. PRINCIPAL ANTON MUSCATELLI
We were delighted to receive a bequest gift of £50,000 from the estate of Dr Hannah Stirling MBE, DLitt (Strathclyde). Her husband William Barr Stirling (MBChB 1937, ChM 1956) and brother-in-law Hugh Stirling (MBChB 1931) were both graduates of the University and her generous gift in memory of this family connection will support medical students in difficult financial circumstances. Her husband and brother-in-law both saw distinguished service as naval surgeons during World War II; they went on to be Chief Consultant Urologist and Chief Consultant Gynaecologist respectively at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Dr Stirling helped found the Friends of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs and was a lifelong campaigner to protect and promote the area. In 1996 she became the first Briton to be honoured with an award from Europa Nostra, a movement which safeguards Europe’s cultural and natural heritage.

‘ JOHN SMITH EMBODIED SO MUCH THAT IS GOOD IN PUBLIC SERVICE. THIS CENTRE IS A FITTING TRIBUTE TO A MAN OF HIGH PRINCIPLE, HUGE PASSION AND GREAT COMPASSION.’ PRIME MINISTER DAVID CAMERON
The University is also delighted to receive a gift from the estate of Miss Isabel Ellis (MA 1949), to support our sister magazine Avenue. Her gift will enable some special articles by students and recent graduates – do look out for these in future issues. •• If you are considering leaving a gift to the University in your will, our Development Officer for Legacies, Mrs Barrie Bryson, would be delighted to talk with you about your wishes and intentions, email: barrie. bryson@glasgow.ac.uk, tel: +44 (0)141 330 6886.

INSPIRING OUR NEXT GENERATION OF WORLD CHANGERS The University is continuing to grow the scholarship funding for students in a number of areas. Scholarships not only provide students with the chance to do amazing things and to undertake life-changing experiences, but also help to inspire students to change the world. Every donation makes a difference, so thank you to everyone who has donated to the University.
Inspiring ambition Alumnus John Aitken had a passion for life that helped him to fight lymphoma three times during his lifetime; however, sadly John lost his battle with the disease in 2014 at the age of 32.
To celebrate John’s courage and positivity, his friends and family have established the JMA Trust to provide financial support for causes close to John’s heart. In recognition of the time that John spent at the University, the Trust has established the John Maurice Aitken Talent Scholarships to help more students benefit from the experiences at Glasgow that John cherished. Allan Gillies is a friend of John and a Trustee of the JMA Trust: ‘John took so much from his time at the University of Glasgow, not only through his studies, but in the lasting friendships and memories he made there. We know he would have wanted others to have that same opportunity, regardless of their background. We are delighted that the JMA Trust’s donation is being put to great use; supporting young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue their ambitions in higher education and fulfil their potential.’ With three students already pursuing their studies thanks to the support of the John Maurice Aitken Talent Scholarships, four more awards will be made this year. •• For more information on supporting the Talent Scholarship programme contact Kate Richardson, email: kate.richardson @glasgow.ac.uk, tel: +44 (0)141 330 1867. 4
INSPIRING TRAVEL The School of Modern Languages & Cultures Postgraduate Scholarship Fund has had a great response from generous alumni donors. Professor of Hispanic Studies and head of the school Kathryn Crameri launched the Postgraduate Scholarship Fund in June 2015 with an appeal to encourage alumni involvement. Study abroad is fundamentally important to modern languages students, who often need support to make the most of their hard work. Professor Crameri’s appeal asked alumni to give £25 towards the fund and, with a large number of generous alumni one-off and monthly donors, we will now be able to award scholarships worth more than £5,000 over the next five years to talented postgraduate students in financial need at the school. Staff and students would like to say a huge thank you to all of you who contributed. •• For further information see glasgow.ac.uk/smlc-scholarships.
Within the appeal, alumni were also encouraged to return goodluck messages to modern languages students about to make their first trip abroad to study and work as teaching assistants in schools. Amy Swann (French and Maths) and Sarah Loughran (French and Politics) are pictured holding some of the messages from alumni. They said: ‘These messages are lovely to read – they’ve been in our shoes!’
INSPIRING STUDY A Scottish cancer charity has chosen to partner with the University by establishing a scholarship for the Masters in Cancer Sciences postgraduate programme: the Christopher Douglas Smith Postgraduate Scholarship. Christopher Smith, brother of Colin, Clara and Caroline Smith, died of a rare form of bone cancer at the age of 17. Colin and Clara founded Unite Against Cancer in Christopher’s memory. The charity aims to fund world-class research to improve understanding of cancer and to find out how to prevent, diagnose and treat different kinds of cancer. The charity also seeks to raise awareness of cancer treatments, to raise funds to improve facilities for cancer patients, and to work in partnership with others to achieve the greatest impact in the fight against cancer. The University’s postgraduate programme in Cancer Sciences enables students to work within a multidisciplinary environment of world-leading scientists and cancer specialists to address the latest challenges in cancer diagnosis, research and treatment. •• For further information about supporting cancer sciences, please contact Catherine McGrory, email: catherine.mcgrory@glasgow.ac.uk, tel: +44 (0)141 330 8007.
INSPIRING SPORT Launched this year, the University’s bursaries for basketball aim to attract the best talent and support athletes in their quest to compete in basketball at the very highest level. As well as financial support, athletes will benefit from free access to the University’s sports facilities, strength & conditioning and nutritional support, sports mentoring advice and assistance with negotiating academic flexibility. A personal message from alumnus Sandy Sutherland (MA 1964) explains what motivated him to set up the Sandy Sutherland Bursary for Basketball. ‘In 1960 I was competing in the Scottish Schoolboys Championships at the former University athletics ground at Westerlands and, after watching my victory in the shot putt, the then Principal of the University of Glasgow, Sir Hector Hetherington, asked me if I was intending to go to university and if so where. To his horror I said “Edinburgh” as that was the only university to have accepted me, although I had applied to Glasgow as well. ‘The following week I received in the post my acceptance for Glasgow from another athletics fan, the late registrar George Richardson, and my decision was made for me – in fact I may even have been Glasgow’s first invited sports scholar, though no money was involved. I was able to repay that faith by enhancing the name of the University by winning both Scottish national and university titles in the black and gold colours and earning a double Blue in athletics and weightlifting.
Inspiring research The University is very proud of its links with alumnus Alf Wight, better known as Yorkshire vet and author James Herriot. This year is the 100th anniversary of his birth and we are sure that Alf would have been very proud of the success of the School of Veterinary Medicine’s James Herriot Scholarship Fund, named in his honour with the blessing of his family. The fund enables postgraduate students to either complete a Masters by Research degree or enhance their research in ways that would otherwise not have been possible. Our most recent scholar, Elspeth Waugh, has been chosen so that she can continue her research into canine lymphoma, which she hopes will provide results relevant to both human and canine medicine. ‘Funding for companion animal projects is very difficult to come by, and the money from the James Herriot Scholarship, along with some other funding, is allowing me to complete the final phase of my PhD. I could not do this work without the James Herriot Scholarship, so I am very grateful.’ •• For more information about our James Herriot Scholarship Fund, please contact Sarah Hunter, email: sarah.hunter@glasgow.ac.uk, tel: +44 (0)141 330 7145.
‘Since then I have been attracted by the team ethos to another sport at which Glasgow excels, basketball, and, though I never played the game to any great level, I now want to encourage those alumni who did to follow my example and give generously to support the men’s and women’s teams so that they can grow and match Edinburgh as the leading club in the country. ‘A former women’s captain, Dr Fiona Goodchild (née Kidd), has set up a bursary in memory of her team-mate in the 1960s, Dr Anne Ferguson (née Glen), a renowned Scottish academic in medicine; while another friend of mine, US-based sports benefactor Gordon Josey, has matched my modest contribution.’ •• For more information on supporting student athletes contact Kate Richardson, email: kate.richardson@glasgow.ac.uk, tel: +44 (0)141 330 1867. 5
