Giving to Glasgow: the Scholarships Fund
01
The University of Glasgow is determined that its doors are open to all who are dedicated to academic excellence. Your support of the Scholarships Fund makes this possible. Your choice to make a gift creates more scholarships, which means: More opportunity Since 1451 we’ve been creating opportunities for the talented and dedicated. Creating new Talent Scholarships means that the people who have the ability to come here can do so. Within the Russell Group of Universities1, we are a leader in ensuring that talented students from any background have access to our teaching and research. More experience An education that inspires respect from employers and is ranked top in the UK for international student satisfaction2. Each year we welcome over 23,000 students to Glasgow and our international students arrive here from
more than 120 countries. Scholarships for travel and exchange programmes can enhance the learning experience with time abroad. More impact We are in the top 1% of the world’s universities today3 and are one of the UK’s top earners for research. To date, we have invested £350m in new facilities to further the impact of our research and teaching. Our Excellence Awards help attract the best students and gives them every opportunity to conduct outstanding research. 1

The difference your gift could make. Perhaps your own time as a student influences where you see a scholarship having the greatest benefit. It could be to the direct support of a student who needs financial assistance for their fees and living costs; or to attract an exceptional student to work in a particular field of research that you are passionate about, or studied yourself; or you could create the opportunity for one of our students to study in a different country. Our scholarship programmes allow choice when you give to the Scholarships Fund.
Charlotte Pache Talent Scholarship ‘ I loved my time at Glasgow and, coming from a less affluent background, I didn’t have financial support to get through my degree. I want to enable others facing similar challenges to have the opportunity to complete their studies without the same pressures.’ Charlotte Pache (née Hall), LLB (1991), DipLP (1992). Merrill Legal Solutions, Hong Kong
‘ I am extremely grateful that I have been awarded the Charlotte Pache Talent Scholarship. Thanks to the scholarship, the financial pressures of being a student are eased and I am able to concentrate on my studies and experience the different aspects of university life. In these times of economic uncertainty and of rising costs, it is reassuring to know that there are people out there willing to support students with their education.’ Victoria Keir LLB student. There are a number of scholarship programmes you can support: The University awards at least 50 undergraduate Talent Scholarships each year to support students who could otherwise face financial difficulties studying at university. The Glasgow Excellence Awards will enable us to offer fully funded and partially funded postgraduate scholarships to attract the best students internationally. They also offer our donors the chance to support the School or subject of their choice. The Glasgow Centre for International Development (GCID) PhD Scholarship Scheme is aimed at high achieving candidates from a small number of eligible countries in Africa and Asia who wish to pursue a PhD at the University. Travel Scholarships and Scholarships for Exchange Students provide our students with the opportunity to study abroad and enhance their skills and employability as they acquire cross-cultural communication skills, analytical skills, flexibility, resilience, and the ability to adapt to new circumstances and value differences.
GCID PhD Scholarship ‘ There’s a lot of potential in the developing countries but many are not able to go on to PhD level because of a lack of funding. I hope my training at Glasgow will be one step towards helping Zambia boost her human resource capacity in environmental management.’ Orleans Mfune Glasgow Centre for International Development PhD scholarship holder

Please contact us at the Development and Alumni Office to discuss how you could give to the Scholarships Fund. Here’s a guide to the types of contributions we suggest. Named Annual Scholarships: you could fund a Glasgow Excellence (postgraduate) three-year scholarship or a Glasgow Talent (undergraduate) scholarship on an annual basis. This requires a regular gift which can be made monthly or annually. Please see the table opposite for the amounts required to fund these scholarships. You could provide a Travel Scholarship with anything from £500 to £2,000 per year, depending on the duration and geographical location. You could direct a regular monthly gift towards the overall Scholarships Fund as shown in the table opposite. Gifts over £250 can be recognised with a naming opportunity under our Gifted Scheme. You can create a Named Endowed Scholarship tailored to a particular subject or to fund students from particular geographical areas. The scholarship is awarded from interest generated by a large capital gift.
Mac Robertson Travel Scholarship ‘ Receiving the scholarship helped me to complete my PhD. It provided me with the opportunity to travel to Australia to complete my research with one of the leading international professors in my area of research. While I was in Australia I received a job offer from Microsoft. Their selection process is very competitive and I believe that receiving the scholarship helped distinguish my application from the other candidates.’ Daniela Busse MA 1997, PhD 2002. Director, User Experience at SAP Labs
Jim Gatheral Travel Scholarship This scholarship was established in 2008 by Jim Gatheral (BSc, 1979). The award allows a doctoral student to travel and study at another institution that excels in mathematical modelling, enhancing their depth of knowledge in the field. W M Mann Foundation Travel Awards These awards complement the University’s overseas exchange programme by providing financial support for living expenses to exchange students while they live in another country.

Gift Aid If you are a current UK tax-payer, the University can enhance the value of your donation by claiming back the tax which you would have paid on your gift. Higher rate taxpayers can benefit by reclaiming the difference between the higher rate and basic rate of tax through their own tax return. Bequests Over the centuries we have been the fortunate and grateful beneficiary of countless legacies from alumni, friends and supporters. Making a bequest to the University offers advantages to you and those who will benefit from your estate. Many of the endowed scholarships the University has were created in this way. For further information on giving to the University please see www.glasgow.ac.uk/ givingtoglasgow or call us on +44 (0)141 330 4951.
Santander Universities Scholarships The University of Glasgow signed a three-year partnership agreement with Santander Universities in 2010. They will provide eight scholarships for Iberian and Latin American postgraduate students to do a Masters degree at Glasgow. The three-year agreement will also create a minimum of 15 mobility scholarships for Glasgow students and staff. The recipients will travel to universities within the Santander Universities Network to study or conduct research. Margaret Ritchie Talent Scholarship This scholarship was funded by a legacy gift from the estate of Margaret Ritchie (BSc, 1949). The scholarship is awarded every four years to a new undergraduate chemistry student, covering expenses for the duration of their studies.
We are grateful for any gift, however big or small. If you’re happy to let us, we want to thank you publicly for your gift. If you are in the position to create a scholarship you will have the opportunity to name it. Our online Benefactor Wall also allows contributions to be recognised with an inscription.
