Welcome

PhD Student’s Award-winning Research Joe Ryan-Hume’s award-winning research on American Political History has taken him all over the world. His achievements include a four-month fellowship at the Library of Congress in Washington DC, a scholarship to collaborate with academics at Hong Kong University, a fellowship at the British Library in London, and the honour of being awarded a Schlesinger Library Dissertation Grant from Harvard University.

I am pleased to announce that the University continues to strengthen its international reach in many ways. Our study-abroad programmes in North America continue to be a success. Together with many colleagues across the University, I have been working hard to both strengthen existing partnerships and foster new ones. This has seen a significant increase in the number of study-abroad students choosing Glasgow: Spring 2016 is up 46% on Spring 2015. Whilst travelling in February, hosting our alumni events, I shall be visiting a new partner, the University of Vermont as well as a potential new partner in Wisconsin. Alumni have also been involved in these activities by supporting the Travel Scholarships Fund, more of which is reported on in this issue. In 2015, the University committed to the Institute of International Education’s Generation Study Abroad initiative which aims, by 2019, to double the number of US students having a study-abroad experience. Our work on study-abroad and exchange aligns well with this. International Summer School We are also seeing good growth in our International Summer School. This offers a range of mainly three-week courses as well as opportunities for undergraduate research experience. There is interest from several US partners who wish to bring faculty-led cohorts of students and teach a course themselves whilst their students also take advantage of summer school courses.

Professor David Fearn International Dean for North America 2

His PhD examines the presidential era of Ronald Reagan, and its impact on the current political landscape. His thesis Standing in Reagan’s Shadow: Liberal Strategies in a Conservative Age questions the notion of conservative ascendancy and the so-called ‘Reagan revolution’ in America by reinterpreting the impact of liberalism in the 1980s. Joe also founded The Atlantic Cable, a student-led network, based at the University of Glasgow, and funded by the Research & Development Office. It provides an online platform for scholars, students, and members of the public to exchange ideas related to transatlantic studies, with a particular focus on Scotland and the United States.

For more news about Joe and the University’s inspiring researchers visit www.glasgow. ac.uk/research/horizons.

Alumnus Honoured for CritiCall Emergency Service Dr Frank Baillie, MBChB 1972, of McMaster University, was recently honoured for his emergency service, Criticall, a 24-hour-a-day emergency referral service, which monitors and records every acute care bed in Ontario. This revolutionary way of managing referrals means that patients are getting medical care faster than ever before. Baillie was one of 38 Canadians who received a meritorious service medal from Right Honourable David Johnston at Rideau Hall.

Our alumni groups give those who are looking to connect with other UofG alumni in their area the chance to meet for regular get-togethers whenever possible. We have many active groups, large and small, throughout North America who meet regularly for drinks, dinner or even events like exhibitions, shows and Scottish holidays.

We don’t always have an organised group where there are a concentrated number of alumni; so if you’re interested in meeting up with other members of the UofG family, please get in touch for more information or visit for the full list at www. glasgow.ac.uk/alumni and follow the ‘Reconnect’ link to get started.

Giving Tuesday 2015: A Soaring Success Thank You for Your Support! We are so pleased to share the final results of our second Giving Tuesday Appeal from 2015. A special day to promote global giving, Giving Tuesday once again focused on raising funds for Travel Scholarships, with a goal of £10,000 in a day. This year we had a new and exciting twist to our campaign, where we hosted a Hub for our students who have studied abroad to stop by and takeover our Facebook and Instagram accounts. It was fantastic for all of us here to meet the students who have directly been impacted upon by the generosity of our donors and to hear of their wonderful stories of time spent studying, working and travelling abroad – all thanks to a Travel Scholarship! Not to mention the stunning photos they shared on social media, Facebook and Instagram. Our students told of how their time abroad had changed their career prospects and what they now deemed possible. By studying abroad and challenging themselves they now have a better idea of their professional goals, as well as personal growth and potential. Current Law student, Cameron McCall, said: ‘As well as travelling in my spare time, I was also able to gain work experience at a law firm in Brisbane and help run a student-led charity project at QUT using my legal skills. My whole year

abroad was a wonderful experience and I am so thankful to the University and the Scholarship that they afforded me this opportunity. On returning to Glasgow, I’ve realised how lucky I am to be part of a University that has such a global outlook.’ We are delighted to announce that we have surpassed our target, once again, and have raised well over £10,000! The success of the campaign is all thanks to our generous alumni and friends who supported us. Upon watching an interview with Fiona Kipling, one of our Giving Tuesday Scholarship recipients, alumnus Gordon Stevenson, BSc 1967, and his wife, Joan, shared with us why they support Giving Tuesday. They told us, ‘We watched the video of Fiona, who was the recipient of a Travel Scholarship last year. What she gained from this opportunity was outstanding in so many ways. Her much clearer vision of what she wanted to achieve after graduating as a vet was invaluable. That is why it would be our pleasure to contribute to Giving Tuesday again this year.’ Giving Tuesday 2016 will be announced in our next edition, but in the meantime, feel free to visit www.facebook.com/GivingTuesdayUofG or www.instagram.com/ glasgowalumni/ to see all the amazing photos and stories shared by our study abroad students.

The James McCune Smith Memorial Lecture 2015 On the 150th anniversary of the death of James McCune Smith, a lecture in his memory was held on Tuesday, 17 November 2015 in the Yudowitz Lecture Theatre in the Wolfson Medical Building. The speaker was Professor Simon Newman and the title of his lecture was ‘Run Away from his Master’: Freedomseeking Slaves in Eighteenth-century Britain. The lecture was followed by a drinks reception in the Atrium of the Wolfson Medical Building. James McCune Smith was the first African American to receive a university medical degree anywhere in the world. He graduated from the University of Glasgow BA in 1835, MA in 1836, and MD in 1837. Born a slave in 1813 in New York City, but liberated by the New York State’s Emancipation Act of 1827, Smith was denied admission to universities in the United States on account of his race.

On 1 December our Facebook campaign reached over 8,000 people in 45 countries.

Accepted by the University of Glasgow, Smith’s studies were funded in part by the Glasgow Emancipation Society, of which he became an active member. Not only a successful physician, Smith became a great abolitionist and educator, and has been recognised as one of the foremost black intellectuals in nineteenth-century America.

Planned Giving from North America For many donors, a bequest made under a will is the easiest way to make a significant gift to the American Alumni of Glasgow University (AAGU) and the University of Glasgow. Charitable gifts to AAGU are 100% deductible from your taxable estate. Canadian

taxpayers can also make a bequest to the University which is deductible for estate tax purposes, and there is no limit on the amount of the estate tax charitable deduction. You can make a bequest by creating a new will, adding a codicil to your current will, designating AAGU or the

University as a beneficiary of your retirement plan, or including Glasgow in your revocable trust or other estate plan. If you are considering making a gift, we’d be delighted to talk to you about your wishes and provide any further information required.
