Giving to Glasgow Supporting scholarships

Creating possibilities The University of Glasgow has a strong history of inspiring great minds and pushing the boundaries of research that changes the world we live in. With alumni such as Adam Smith, Joseph Black and Lord Kelvin we pride ourselves on the wealth of knowledge and vision that our students can draw inspiration from, and contribute to. With a world-class education, groundbreaking research opportunities and lifelong friendships, time studying at the University of Glasgow can shape our students’ lives long after graduation. We firmly believe that these opportunities should be available to all talented students, regardless of background or financial circumstances, and our Scholarships Fund helps to make this possible. The generosity of our alumni and friends in ensuring our doors remain

open to all talented students has been vital to the University’s success since its establishment in 1451. With these challenging economic times, this support has never been more important. The possibilities of what you can support through our Scholarships Fund are endless. We ask that you take a moment to reflect on what the University of Glasgow means to you, and what it could mean to others. This brochure highlights some of our main scholarship programmes, but if there is a particular scholarship you would like to support we would be delighted to hear from you. With your help we can continue to support the next generation in achieving their aspirations and keeping Glasgow at the forefront of world-changing research. Thank you for your support.

‘The power of education can never be overstated, and should be open to everyone, from all walks of life. As Principal and as an alumnus of the University, I believe in giving students access to world-class teaching in a diverse and multi-cultural environment. Scholarships play a vital role in achieving this and it is our responsibility to create these opportunities for the next generation.’ Professor Anton Muscatelli Principal & Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow and scholarships donor

Changing demands on our students Graduates today are entering a world where the challenges they face, and the expectations placed on them, are of an unprecedented level. More than any generation previously students will live their lives in a global context, and the University of Glasgow is equipping them with the skills and outlook to do this. We believe in not only nurturing academic achievement but preparing our students to make a contribution to the world as global citizens.

As well as the challenges of a constantly changing world, our students are also facing increased financial pressures. With the cost of education increasing and living expenses now estimated to be on average £14,000 per year* the Scholarships Fund is vital in ensuring Glasgow students are prepared to make as great a contribution to the world today as they have always done. We teach our students to think independently on a global scale, and your support will help them to achieve this. * The Research Council UK estimates average annual living costs of students as £13,863.

‘It is our duty to prepare our students for the challenges they will face after graduation. In many respects this is a new world and our students are being equipped with the education, skills and experience to forge successful paths for themselves within it.’ Professor Frank Coton Vice Principal for Learning & Teaching

Talent Scholarships create new possibilities for students across all subject areas.

Talent Scholarships Ability and potential, rather than economic background and circumstances, are the most important attributes for any prospective student to the University of Glasgow. Our Talent Scholarship scheme helps to ensure that restricted financial means are no barrier to undergraduate or postgraduate students taking up their place at University. Talent Scholarships open new possibilities and provide limitless opportunities by supporting Scottish students for whom a higher education would otherwise be impossible. The scholarships enable students to purchase course textbooks and study materials as well as helping with basic living costs, ensuring that some

of the best and brightest students are supported in achieving their potential. With your support, the Talent Scholarship Fund can provide life changing opportunities for some our most outstanding students. Brian McBride,Chairman of online fashion retailer ASOS and a major supporter of the scheme said: ‘The Talent Scholarship scheme is vital in providing the opportunity and support for some of Scotland’s most talented students to excel. These committed and ambitious young people are at the very starting point of their careers which could see them rise to be our future leaders.’

‘Breaking the barriers of inequality in education is something I feel very strongly about and I am delighted to be in a position that I can help in some way to ensuring that financial constraints are no boundary to young people achieving their potential.’ Brian McBride MA (1977) Chairman, ASOS

Travel Scholarships Travel Scholarships allow students to gain important experiences that can expand their horizons, further their research and enhance their employability. Whether it be presenting research findings at a conference, or embarking on a year abroad to study a foreign language, travel opportunities provide greater depth of experience and understanding. It is our ambition that all students should have the opportunity to enhance not only their academic, but also their life experience during their time at University.

By developing a better understanding of the world, we believe our students can play a more valuable role in our global community. By making a donation to the Travel Scholarship Fund you will allow Glasgow students to gain new perspectives and experiences, preparing them to make a greater contribution to the world we live in.

Regular donations of £5 per month or single gifts of £250 or more will be recognised in our publications and on our online benefactor wall, a web-based version of a traditional donor wall. You can choose how your dedication appears. Many supporters give a gift in memory of a loved one and their inscription on the donor wall can reflect this.
