World changing research

Our many research centres and institutes have been created to address the global challenges facing society today and in the future. Here’s a spotlight on two of our award-winning research groups.

Explore our research centres and institutes

Global Disaster Resilience Centre

With growing populations and more extensive and interconnected built environments, the world’s exposure to hazards is increasing. It is critical to anticipate, plan for and reduce disaster risk in order to more effectively protect communities and countries. When disaster does strike, communities may need to be rebuilt physically, economically and socially.

The Global Disaster Resilience Centre works with stakeholders at the global, national and local level to make this happen.

The Centre’s vision is for a society that has the capacity to resist or change in order to reduce hazard vulnerability, and to continue functioning physically, economically and socially when subjected to a hazard event. They currently collaborate with 288 higher education, government, private sector and non-government partners in 57 countries, spanning Europe, Asia, Australia/Oceania, Africa, North America and South America, and work with stakeholders to translate research findings into impact.

The Centre’s research, education and advocacy contributes to 15 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. The Centre was also awarded the 2019 Newton Prize for Indonesia, which recognises research and innovation projects which create an impact socially and economically.

Centre for Precision Technologies

Manufacturing metrology can be described as the ability to measure and characterise manufacturing processes and components in order to ensure quality, efficiency and performance and is critical for growth and productivity. It is a core enabling technology which underpins smart manufacturing across all sectors.

The University’s Centre for Precision Technologies (CPT) is widely recognised as both a UK and world-leading centre for advanced manufacturing metrology. This is demonstrated through large-scale research projects and funding, extensive industrial engagement and far-reaching impact in the UK and internationally.

The Centre’s research outputs range from developing cutting-edge theories and technologies through to novel application of metrology techniques throughout the industrial landscape. These outputs provide a tangible benefit to the manufacturing sector, addressing their critical measurement challenges, improving productivity and accelerating innovation.

The Centre was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2021, the highest honour awarded to UK Higher Education Institution, which recognises outstanding work that shows quality and innovation and that delivers real benefit to the wider world.

Work-ready graduates

Our emphasis on ensuring that our students are prepared for the world of work means that you’ll leave university with more than just a degree. You’ll gain skills to get you noticed by employers and be supported in developing a stand-out CV.

Real-world experience

A big part of making you an employable graduate is our focus on real-world experience. One way to do this is through an industry placement. This can be undertaken in the third year of many undergraduate degrees, or at the end of some postgraduate taught degrees with the Huddersfield Business School.

Receive dedicated support to help you secure a placement. A placement in industry will help you gain the skills and experience to boost your CV, helping you stand out from the crowd when applying for graduate positions. Our students have worked with companies across the UK and overseas such as Airbus, Microsoft, Pfizer and KPMG.

The Global Professional Award

At Huddersfield we’re proud to inspire global professionals. If you’re studying an undergraduate degree with us, you’ll also study for the Global Professional Award*, an innovative programme that aims to enhance your capabilities in:

• Employability and Enterprise – understand what employers want from graduates and leaders, and develop the skills to forge your own career path.

• Wellbeing – develop tools that will contribute to your physical and mental health.

• Global and Social Awareness – understand and critique the key social, economic and political issues that are shaping our world.

Students who complete this three-year programme will also receive a Level 5 Award in Leadership and Management from the internationally recognised Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

These internships help put theoretical knowledge into practice and they are exclusive to our graduates, who we support through the application process.

“One thing that really attracted me to Huddersfield was the fact that I would have the opportunity to gain professional experience on the course through a placement. I undertook a placement year at a creative studio, and I’ve been able to continue working freelance for the company in my final year.”

Real industry experience

Placements are a key part of our courses at Huddersfield. We know how much employers value graduates who have real-world experience on their CV and that’s why we encourage our students to make the most of the opportunities available.

We asked Alexandra, a final year Business Management with Finance BA(Hons) student from Malaysia, to share her experience of doing a placement with financial specialists, PRGX.

“Initially, I was hesitant about doing a placement year. It can be daunting applying for jobs and taking a year out of your studies to work. However, the lecturers on my course encouraged me to look at the opportunities available. I successfully found my placement on the University’s placement portal.

“I had lots of support from the University when applying for jobs, which made the whole process much easier. The team helped me to get my CV looking its best, and I had a one-to-one mock interview, so I felt prepared when my interview came. Throughout my placement year, the University staff also regularly checked with me to see how I was getting on.

“I worked as a Financial Analyst at financial services company, PRGX. I gained so many new skills, from analysing complex financial data to utilising financial analysis tools and software packages. These skills will be valuable in various professional settings and have enhanced my abilities in financial analysis, data analysis and auditing, which are applicable to the career I want to pursue, so I feel really well prepared for my future.

Top 20

We’re in the top 20 in the UK for placement years in industry*

“Since finishing my placement, I have also had the opportunity to continue to work part-time at PRGX during my final year, which I have really enjoyed. I have now been made an offer of a permanent role with the company.

“If you’re thinking about applying for a course at Huddersfield, I would seriously recommend considering a placement. A course with a placement provides you with the opportunity to gain practical experience, apply the theoretical knowledge you’ve learned on your degree in real-world situations, and develop practical skills that can enhance your employability.

“A placement also offers networking opportunities, allowing you to establish professional connections and build a network of contacts in your chosen industry, which can be valuable for future job prospects.”

Applying to Huddersfield

Starting your application to study in the UK is an exciting step. You can apply to the University directly, through a partner agent or through our regional offices.

Making your application

When you apply for a place at the University of Huddersfield, your application will be examined and if you meet our academic entry requirements and visa eligibility checks, you will be made an offer. This will be confirmed by email and on your personal applicant portal, MyHud.

Interviews

Some courses require an online interview with the Admissions Tutor. It will be stated as a condition of your offer and the Admissions Tutor will contact you to arrange this.

Portfolio or audition

Some courses may require you to submit a portfolio to demonstrate your suitability for the course. You should submit this alongside your application, and it will be assessed by academic staff within the School you have applied to. This will be confirmed in your offer letter.

Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS)

Postgraduate students may need ‘ATAS Clearance’ before applying for a student visa, dependent on the course you have applied to. This will be confirmed in your offer letter.

Further details can be found on the UK government website.

English language skills

For students whose first language is not English, the University requires a recognised qualification in English language before you can begin your chosen course.

The qualification the University normally requires is an IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in all bands) in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent.

Please note that some courses require a higher level of English, therefore please see the specific course details on our course listings.

We appreciate that when you submit your application you may not have the level of English required. The University therefore provides a wide range of Pre-Sessional English Programmes, which will prepare you for your degree studies, and enable you to meet the language requirements for your chosen degree. See page 19 for more details.

Find out more about our Pre-Sessional English programmes.

What do I need to include with my application?

For your application to be accurately assessed, you must submit a full and complete application form, and include the following documentation:

• Full details of your previous study, along with academic transcripts/marksheets and certificates/diplomas.

• English language test scores (IELTS, PTE, etc).

• A copy of your CV.

• Personal statement detailing why you wish to study the course you have applied for, and how the course compliments any previous studies you’ve done before and/or your future career aspirations.

• Copies of any previous UK visas, and any visa refusals from any country (including visitor refusals).

• Sponsorship confirmation (if your fees are going to be paid by your government or other organisation).

Equality, diversity and inclusion

A continuing commitment to equality means that all students, and staff, should have equal opportunities to reach their full potential at Huddersfield. This is supported by a number of initiatives. Here are just a few:

Race equality

The University has signed up to Advance HE’s Race Equality Charter which helps universities to improve the representation, progression and success of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (B.A.M.E) students and staff within Higher Education. As part of our commitment, we are developing initiatives and solutions to improve race equality across the University.

LGBTQ+

Gender equality

We hold an Athena SWAN Bronze Award for gender equality. The Athena SWAN Charter is a framework used across the globe to support and transform gender equality within Higher Education and research. The Charter guides institutions on how to achieve their gender equality objectives in terms of representation, student progression, career development and the working environment.

The vibrant colours of the LGBTQ+ movement, proudly displayed at the entrance of the University, send out a permanent message of inclusiveness and tolerance – everyone is welcome at the University of Huddersfield. The transformed zebra crossing was unveiled during National Inclusion Week in September 2019.

Make a change!

The Students’ Union runs six volunteer, student-led networks that are defined and directed by their individual members. This includes the B.A.M.E Ambassadors, Disabled Students Network, Global Students Network, LGBT+ Students Network, Class and Social Mobility Network and the Women’s Network. If you’re passionate, motivated and identify with any of these networks, you could get involved to ensure that students are heard, better represented and their views are voiced from a position of authenticity.

Meet our students

If you really want to know about student life and what it’s like to live and study in Huddersfield, a great way to find out is through our current students.

“I came to the University of Huddersfield to pursue a Master’s degree in Sport and Exercise Nutrition. Having lived in a big city all my life, I knew I wanted to study in a small town and get the full campus experience.

“The course at Huddersfield stood out to me because of the strong balance it had between practical and theoretical study. The course leaders and academic team were excellent mentors and tutors, introducing me to a new way of learning. I was motivated to keep my grades up and work towards getting the Vice-Chancellor’s scholarship which I successfully achieved, allowing me to also study for my PhD in Sport Nutrition at Huddersfield.

“As part of my PhD studies, I have had the opportunity to teach undergraduate and postgraduate students and carry out practical trials in the newly refurbished sports laboratories. My supervisors also helped me to publish my Master’s dissertation, which has definitely been the highlight of my academic career so far.”

“I’ve had many opportunities as a student here, from joining the Baltic Student Society to becoming President of the Thai Boxing society at the Students’ Union. I undertook a work placement supporting global events with the International Office at the University.

“I was also successful in my campaign to be elected to the Students’ Union Officer team, and I have acted as the Activities Officer for the last 12 months, representing students across the University.

“I feel like the University has created a space for me to thrive and develop my knowledge. My advice to new students would be to take advantage of all the opportunities available to you!”

We love to hear what our students have been doing since graduating with us. Discover the journey that led Huzaif to his dream job at Jaguar Land Rover.

“I wanted to study Automotive Engineering since I was 10 years old. When I found the Automotive and Motorsport Engineering course at the University of Huddersfield, it ticked all the boxes for me.

“Whilst at Huddersfield, I tried to take advantage of all the opportunities available to me. I joined the Indian Society where I made lots of friends, and I found that the University support services were always there when I needed them.

“I had lots of guidance from my lecturers and support staff and the placement team in my School did a phenomenal job supporting me with my applications when I chose to do a placement in my third year.

“I secured a placement at German company, Schaeffler, which is based in Sheffield. They specialise in manufacturing bearings, gears, driving elements and other parts and accessories for motor vehicles, and I worked there for a year as an industrial engineer.

“After finishing my placement, I was offered a part-time position with the company that I continued during my final year at university. This broadened my knowledge in the industry, and I believe that the experience I got from my degree and from doing a placement helped me to get my current job at Jaguar Land Rover.

“When I moved to the UK, I knew that Jaguar Land Rover was one of the biggest automakers in the country, and I always dreamed of working with them. I was successful in securing a graduate role as a Manufacturing and Operations Graduate Engineer.

“As a graduate recruit, we do four placements in two years across different departments within manufacturing. I’ve worked on car models such as the Jaguar XE, Jaguar XF and Jaguar F-Type. My team’s role was to make manufacturing processes more efficient and using problemsolving skills to tackle daily issues. I’m really enjoying my role and the variety of projects.

“If you’re considering applying to Huddersfield, my advice would be to enjoy everything that the university offers. Work hard and you will succeed. Enjoy your studies, make friends, get involved in activities, consider a part-time job and definitely consider doing a placement!”
