WHO WE ARE

MORE THAN JUST A DEGREE As Dean of Students, it’s my responsibility to make sure all our students have the best possible experience during their time at Salford.
In 2018, we climbed 11 places in the Guardian League Table, seven places in the Sunday Times Good University Guide and 19 places in the Complete University Guide. On top of all that, we’re proud to be ranked first for student satisfaction in Greater Manchester (NSS 2018).
We’ve built relationships with organisations of all sizes and across all industry sectors to bring you opportunities to gain authentic and meaningful experiences, which will help give you the edge in a competitive job market after graduating. We use our links with industry in multiple ways throughout the curriculum. In addition to offering many placement or internship opportunities, these include using live briefs as part of a course, involving industry experts in the creation of course content, providing guest lectures and taking part in the assessment process. This ensures you will develop not only the knowledge, but the key skills and attributes needed by employers, and what you learn in the classroom can equally be used in a professional work setting. Embarking on a degree is no easy feat, and it should be challenging personally as well as academically. We pride ourselves on the support we offer to our students, whatever your
circumstances, and we’re here with you every step of the way. You’ll receive personalised wrap-around support throughout your time at Salford, whether you’d like extra guidance on successful revision techniques, understanding how to perfect your interview skills, or to fine tune your digital skills, we can help. Alongside our more academic skills development, we also provide extensive support through our askUS service. Created in coordination with students, our dedicated askUS service is our one-stop shop encompassing wellbeing, counselling, financial advice, disability support, accommodation, careers and enterprise, LGBTQIA+, international and faith support. The thing I love most about Salford is the community that our students and staff have created together; our belief in the talents of our students and our commitment to their success is visible across the University. I know you’ll find Salford to be a home from home.

HOME, First Street
“ HOME is Manchester’s beating heart for international contemporary theatre, art and film. The food is as good as its theatre productions (and that means, well, amazing) but be sure to check on their website before you go for some lunch time deals to cut the cost.” Seren Hughes, BA (Hons) English Literature
MUSIC AND THEATRE Live music is everywhere in Manchester; see the biggest names at venues such as Emirates Old Trafford, the Academy and the O2 Apollo; indie and underground gigs at Night and Day Café, Soup Kitchen and Gorilla; plus annual festivals such as Sounds from the Other City and Parklife. HOME is more than a cinema; it’s Manchester’s centre for international contemporary art, theatre and film, complete with a bar and restaurant. Discover your new favourite director and get involved in exciting events and exhibitions. We’re proud to be founding partners of HOME, which opens up opportunities for students such as gaining direct industry involvement in the curriculum on relevant courses. The Lowry Theatre, named after the Salford artist LS Lowry and located at Salford Quays, hosts plays, comedy shows, dance performances, family activities and gallery exhibitions – right on our doorstep next to MediaCityUK. Want to enjoy your culture even closer to home whilst here? Our campus is home to New Adelphi Theatre, a 350-seat theatre which hosts a range of events, from side-splitting comedy to ground breaking dance projects and big band entertainment, involving both our own students and external companies.
FOOD AND DRINK We admit it, we’re a bunch of foodies here – but you can find a lot more than avocado toast at one of Manchester’s many food and drink establishments. Salford’s Chapel Street, just a few minutes’ walk from our Peel Park campus, is home to a growing number of independent outlets including veggie favourite Deli Lama, authentic Italian pizza at Vero Moderno and beautiful cakes and artwork at GK Gallery. In the Northern Quarter it’s all about quirky diners, canteens and cafes – from huge breakfasts or vegan junk food, to American-style burgers and homemade cakes.
Home Sweet Home, Northern Quarter
Manchester’s Chinatown is the second biggest in the UK, with a host of Chinese, Korean and Japanese restaurants, as well as a number of speciality supermarkets. Just outside of the city centre you’ll find Rusholme’s famous ‘curry mile’ offering Indian, South East Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine. Make sure you also visit one of the regular food markets in Manchester city centre or at Salford Quays, whilst the indoor market at Mackie Mayor brings you quality food and drink from local producers and brewers.

Get a better look of our Peel Park campus by watching a video tour, created by our very own students. See page 13 for details.
Our teaching and learning facilities are split between our three sites...
PEEL PARK Our main campus, Peel Park, offers you the best of both worlds: state-of-the-art learning facilities within minutes of a world-class city, set against beautiful green spaces to relax and socialise in. On this campus you’ll easily spot our futuristic New Adelphi Building, which is home to our art, design, music, performance and architecture subjects. Equally as eye-catching though is the Peel Building, opened in 1896 and one of our founding buildings, now home to students studying courses in environment and life sciences. New Adelphi Building
FREDERICK ROAD Frederick Road campus, just ten minutes’ walk from Peel Park, is home to our nursing, midwifery, psychology, social sciences, sports and health sciences courses. Here you’ll find state-of-the-art facilities to equip you with the skills and knowledge you’ll need for a successful and fulfilling career, such as the Patient Simulation Suite, Sports Injury Clinic, Podiatry Clinic and Human Performance Lab. Mary Seacole Building
“ I work in the TV studios at our MediaCityUK campus, where I demonstrate to and teach the students, oversee all productions, help maintain the equipment and look after student and client bookings. I still work in the industry, mainly as a vision mixer and EVS operator on BBC Sport, SKY and BT Sport football productions both in the studio and in outside broadcasts. My weekends are usually filled with making high profile sport productions, then transferring these techniques and skills to the students here through classes and workshops to create great content and also to have fun. It’s brilliant to work on productions outside the University and see the students I’ve been working with over the years. It gives me a massive sense of pride to be able to help our students pave their way into industry.” Joe John, Creative Technical Demonstrator
MEDIACITYUK We are the only University to have a campus at MediaCityUK, the home of TV, digital and creative businesses in the north, including the BBC and ITV. It’s a lively, professional environment, with a wide range of restaurants, bars, shops and leisure facilities, which is expected to double in size in the coming years as the second phase of planned development is completed.

OUR FACILITIES
At the University of Salford, we have a long history of providing people with the tools they need to succeed. We invest heavily in our facilities to ensure you’re using industry-standard facilities and equipment during your studies, meaning you’ll graduate with a working knowledge of the practical concepts that you’ll be faced with day to day. We’ve got ambitious plans for the future too and our campus continues to evolve and grow. Our doors are also open to industry, and you’ll often brush shoulders with staff from commercial organisations using our facilities for testing products or training their staff. Here’s just a taster of facilities on campus…
ANECHOIC CHAMBER Our anechoic chamber, also known as the quietest place on Earth, is used by our acoustics students and for commercial testing. The room, located in our Newton Building, is used for testing items including microphones and musical equipment. Once you enter the chamber and close the doors, it’s said you can hear your own blood circulating!
AUTONOMOUS AND AUTOMATED VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY (AAVT) LABORATORY We’ve recently opened our new purpose-built AAVT laboratory, used by our engineering and acoustics students. The facility, which is also home to our Greenpower team, is designed to enable research into ultra-low emission vehicles and the development and testing of autonomous systems and noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) testing.
AERODYNAMICS LABORATORY
The single-seated Merlin MP520-T simulator is used to support our teaching. It will give you a practical experience of aircraft design that complements traditional theory and laboratory learning, so you will be able to input your own aircraft parameters into the simulator before assessing flight characteristics. The Elite is a fixed-base Piper PA-34 Seneca III aircraft simulator used for flight operation training. It is certified by the Civil Aviation Authority as an FNPT II-MCC multi-crew training environment. The Elite has two pilot seats, each with a full set of instrumentation, controls and visuals. As the pilot, you will see a projection of a terrain based on real geographic territory and specific airports in Europe.
#BECOMEUNSTOPPABLE
For students of aeronautical engineering, we have our very own aerodynamics laboratory and two different flight simulators, which will give you a practical experience of aircraft.

CLIFFORD WHITWORTH LIBRARY We’ve given our main library a £6.2 million refurbishment to bring you the ‘library in the park’ – a fresh, modern learning space with PC suites, Mac computers, laptops available to loan, bookable work rooms and café. The library is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so you can study at a time that suits you. You’ll also find study spaces across the University, so a quiet place to study is never far away.
BODMER LABORATORY The Bodmer Laboratory is named after Sir Walter Bodmer, the British scientist behind the mapping of the human genome. The lab is packed with cutting-edge technical equipment to help you make new discoveries of your own; with AV and HDTV systems that connect you to your lecturers, wherever you are in the lab.
We also have a number of working clinics on campus where, under the supervision of fully trained staff, our students use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to provide a wide range of treatments to patients and clients. These include a podiatry and sports injury clinic, counselling centre and prosthetics and orthotics lab.
HUMAN PERFORMANCE LAB The Human Performance Lab is a teaching and research facility used by students on our sport and exercise courses, as well as physiotherapy, podiatry and prosthetics and orthotics.
#BECOMEUNSTOPPABLE
It’s one of the best equipped labs of its kind in the country, containing an extensive range of biomechanical and physiological equipment. Here, you’ll assess your client’s fitness and performance needs, design exercise programmes and more. As it’s a professional, working lab, you’ll have the opportunity to work with clients at all levels, from recreational exercisers to elite athletes.
29
OUR CAMPUS

MEDIACITYUK MediaCityUK houses our journalism centre, which includes a TV studio, newsroom, radio studio and editing gallery. Here, our journalism students produce digital content across multiple channels, developing and honing their reporting and content production skills. There’s also our digital performance lab - an experimental performance and lecture space, perfect for showcasing computer gaming, animation and dance and equipped with one of the largest HD screens in Europe. In addition to two HD TV studios we have a green screen area equipped with cameras that can turn the studio into a 3D digital environment. This allows us to achieve effects like those seen on weather reports and children’s television. These facilities are industry-standard, and are regularly used by the BBC and other media organisations.
“ Every time I step into MediaCityUK it’s just so inspiring. I think it’s also really great that my lecturers are industry professionals which is very motivating, working among people who are in the positions we’re aiming for. As well as that, there’s the obvious factor of resources. I get to work with state-of-the-art equipment, which is fantastic, as you familiarise yourself with equipment the industry are using.” Ryan Ogden, BA (Hons) Film Production
SIMULATION SUITE
Set up just like a hospital ward, the suite is equipped with human patient simulators, including two adults, a newborn baby, a child and a birthing mum. You’ll learn how to perform vital procedures that you’ll use throughout your career, under the supervision of trained practitioners. As part of the suite, we also have an immersive simulation room, which allows students to be transported to any environment without having to leave the suite. The technology combines a series of cameras which project realistic images onto the walls, with audio equipment to transform the space into anything from the back of an ambulance to a nightclub, prison cell or family home.
FOOD AND DRINK ON CAMPUS The Students’ Union bar, Atmosphere, is your space to relax and have fun with friends. It offers affordable and delicious meals and there are plenty of free events happening throughout the year, including the weekly pub quiz and open mic nights. Alongside the bar is a separate café area which is an alcoholfree space. See page 58 for more information on our Students’ Union. We also have a range of cafés and restaurants across our campuses run by SALFOOD, with a selection of hot and cold food and drinks, and student stores offering all your essentials from stationery to University hoodies.
#BECOMEUNSTOPPABLE
When you train to become a nurse, midwife or allied health professional at Salford, you’ll face real-life scenarios in the safe and supportive environment of our Simulation Suite.

HIDDEN GEMS ON CAMPUS MAKER SPACE
NEW ADELPHI THEATRE
The Maker movement has found its home in Salford in the Newton Building, with our new Maker Space open to all staff and students. Here you can try out a range of new technologies such as laser cutting, 3D printing and waterjet cutting with the help of our experts.
The theatre, located in the New Adelphi Building on our Peel Park campus has an exciting events calendar with live music, art, comedy and performance events. With work on show from established, international touring companies to emerging artists and our own students, we are proud to host a diverse programme with something for everyone. At its heart, our vision is committed to nurturing the emerging talents of our graduates, supporting the work of our postgraduates and fostering partnerships with regional, national and international artists.
PEEL PARK Peel Park was the first public park in the United Kingdom funded entirely by the people’s subscription, to officially open. Created in 1846, it was free to use and brought all Salford residents together. Benefiting from a recent £1.6 million transformation, the park provides a beautiful green space to relax outside of lessons.
SALFORD MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY Salford Museum and Art Gallery was the UK’s ‘first free public library’, which opened in January 1850. The building was a mansion house known as Lark Hill, which had been built in the 1790s and has given its name to the museum’s famous Lark Hill Place; a Victorian street within the museum.
#BECOMEUNSTOPPABLE
Today, Salford Museum and Art Gallery presents an exciting programme of permanent displays and changing contemporary exhibitions from its home adjacent to our Peel Building on Peel Park campus. We’d also recommend a visit to the gift shop, which showcases work from local artists and designers, and don’t forget to sample one of the café’s homemade cakes!

TEAM SALFORD You can’t think about Salford and Manchester without thinking about sport, it’s in our blood.
Team Salford unites all sports teams at the University, with the aim of making exercise accessible and fun for everyone. So whether you’re a regular gym-goer or you’ve never even taken the tags off your trainers, we can help you find a sport or activity that suits you – you could even start your own club.
SPORTS CENTRE Our facilities include a 25 metre swimming pool with spa and sauna; a fitness studio with strength and conditioning rooms, and multi-use sports hall for badminton, basketball, netball and five-a-side-football. Next to the Sports Centre we have four grass pitches – three football pitches and one rugby pitch. We offer a range of fitness classes in our state-of-the-art Studio Room, including Metafit, Zumba, yoga, pilates and studio cycling, and *All costs correct at time of printing (January 2019).
regularly refresh our timetable to bring you new classes at convenient times. In addition, we have also introduced new Matrix MX4 group exercise classes, within our Functional Training Suite, which provides our members with a unique industrial gym setting. Our health hub offers discounted massage treatments to help you recover after training sessions and exam stress. Our Sport Rehabilitation students offer free sports massages and injury treatment on Wednesday afternoons for Sports Centre members and sports team members during term times (over the duration of our BUCS Fixtures – this service is subject to availability and pre-booking is essential). This is a unique student-led service, offering additional value to our memberships. Sports Centre membership costs from as little as £14* per month, and offers fantastic value for money.
OUR PARTNERSHIPS We’ve teamed up with a number of sports clubs and institutions from across the region to create opportunities for many of our students. Here are just a few examples: Sale Sharks Rugby Club has a unique partnership with us, as their coaches study MSc and PhD courses in our School of Health and Society, whilst at the same time our students take on placements with them. We play a key part in preand post-season testing and management of the players alongside their medical staff, using our advanced research and testing facilities.
Thanks to our partnership with the Manchester Institute of Health and Performance (MIHP) our students now have the opportunity to treat patients within an elite facility. We have set up a public physiotherapy clinic at the Institute where students on our BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy course conduct sessions whilst being mentored and supported by highly experienced physiotherapists. The public benefits from discounted rates and the ability to be treated at this world class facility. This clinic builds on our research partnership with MIHP which covers many areas of health and physical activity, including osteoarthritis and footwear interventions for patients who have had treatments to the knee.

CARE LEAVERS AND ESTRANGED STUDENTS We know that many of our students do not have the support of their families at university and that this can create barriers to success. We have some of the very best support in place for both care leavers (for example, if you have been in foster care or a residential unit) and for estranged students (students who have little, no, or a negative relationship with both parents).
LGBTQIA+ Manchester is one of the best queer cities in the UK and it is on your doorstep at Salford. We have an active and vibrant Students’ Union LGBTQ+ Society and specialised pastoral support in askUS. We have a staff member that can help support your transition at university if you need it.
We work nationally with organisations such as the National Network for the Education of Care Leavers and Stand Alone to support students, whether that be financial help and applying for student loans, accommodation and homelessness, emotional support or working with your local authority or support worker to ensure your success at university. SANCTUARY SEEKERS As an Article 26 University we believe access to higher education should be based on ability alone. BEST FOOT FORWARD BSc (Hons) Podiatry student, Jennifer Andrews, tells us a bit more about why she chose a degree in podiatry, and what it actually entails.
“ I f you want a varied, flexible and interesting career with opportunities to improve the quality of life of your patients, to reduce their pain and promote their independence then podiatry could well be the choice for you. I know it was for me.”
The University of Salford has its own podiatry clinic available for members of the public to access. For the first year of my degree I was able to be involved with routine clinics under the supervision of clinicians. In the second and third year you carry out placements with the NHS, in private practice and with an array of specialist clinics (eg. vascular, high risk, diabetes and surgery). Most of the mentors you have on placement trained at Salford too so they understand the demands of the course and the guidance you need; I’ve loved all my placements so far. Salford has a large and very active research department that employs a number of prominent researchers that study the structure and function of the foot and ankle. During my time at Salford I expressed an interest in research and last summer I was offered an internship within the department to assist with some projects that were being undertaken.
During my internship I spent a lot of time reviewing literature and writing applications (this has proved to be an invaluable experience as it’s helped me hugely with my dissertation). The outcome of the studies I was involved in are currently being drafted into papers and when they’re published my name will be listed as an author, I can’t tell you how excited I am about that! In addition to my studies, in my first and second year I was part of the University’s Women’s Rugby Union team. I’d never played the game before, but it really brought me out of my shell, there are loads of opportunities for nights out and you get to travel all over the place to play games.”
With job opportunities often at the forefront of your mind when choosing a degree, Jennifer’s confident that with her degree in podiatry, she’ll be ready to get straight into employment. “With an aging population and an increasing number of people with diabetes, foot health is growing in importance and our skills are more in demand than ever. You can choose to work within the NHS, in a private practice or even set up your own, and with some further training you can even become a podiatric surgeon. I find the work really satisfying and treating patients is incredibly rewarding. There is also a large demand for qualified podiatrists abroad in countries where the profession is still developing.”
#BECOMEUNSTOPPABLE
“I get asked this question so often, most people can’t comprehend why you’d choose to study feet! In reality though, although we specialise in the lower limb, we learn a huge amount about the human body, disease and healthcare provision that makes us skilled and knowledgeable practitioners with a world of job opportunities at our fingertips.

“ The Graduate Scholarship Programme was created by the University of Salford Art Collection, in conjunction with their professional partners, to support the continuation of your practice as a photographer or artist once you have graduated. It has limited places, and you have to work hard to achieve it, but it’s worth the time taken for the support you receive on the programme. In partnership with Castlefield Gallery, you have access to personal mentoring sessions and plenty of different art events ongoing throughout the year.” Joshua Turner, BA (Hons) Photography graduate

WORK EXPERIENCE We use our partnerships and staff networks to create opportunities for you to gain real, hands-on experience that will help you to develop the professional and personal skills that employers value. The majority of our courses offer work placements, as well as opportunities to take part in live briefs, where you’ll work in teams to deliver solutions for real clients. Many courses also offer a year in the industry, giving you the chance to work full-time for an employer. You’ll be paid for your work and you won’t have to pay any tuition fees for the year.
WE’RE WITH YOU ALL THE WAY You can access our professional, on-campus employability services at any time – even after you graduate. We can help you to create the perfect CV and LinkedIn page, as well as practice interview techniques and offer career advice. We also have an on-site recruitment agency called Unitemps, which can help you access part-time and temporary work, working for the University and local employers.
ALL RISE Originally from Paris, Charles Buckman is currently studying LLB (Hons) Law (Media and Digital Industries) at Salford Business School. He tells us a bit more about his course, mooting and the work experience he’s been able to gain. “Mooting is the oral presentation of a legal case against an opposing counsel (or in my case, peer student) before a judge. It’s the closest experience that a student can have whilst at university to appearing in court. In my second year, as part of the Human Rights module, there is an assessment involving mooting that is mandatory which is usually on a case by case basis held in the Salford Business School. As we managed to get to the finals, we visited a real court for the mooting which of course was a great opportunity! Taking part in this has really helped my future career. It helps you to appreciate the seriousness of studying law, and it’s very challenging, especially in terms of preparation. The judges at the mooting stressed how much it helps with building your professionalism and organisation for the future. Everything you say must be justified, and the mooting prepares you for that.
Through the scheme, we provide support for individuals who cannot always get the representation that they need. I joined this year and I have already completed a case, it’s a great way of putting yourself out into the real world. You may only see your client for a short amount of time, but the whole duration of that time they’re depending on you. It’s slightly different to the mooting as that is a fictional case, with the CLOCK scheme it is all real world problems that you are dealing with.”
#BECOMEUNSTOPPABLE
As part of my course we are also able to take part in the CLOCK scheme. CLOCK gives you both legal experience and training, with the goal of helping local people with their benefits and appeals.

POLE POSITION As well as work experience, there’s a whole range of other opportunities you can take part in alongside your studies to boost your CV and enhance your career opportunities after graduating. These include clubs and societies, such as the Salford Racing team.
Salford Racing was established in 2015 with the aim of building a track ready race car to compete against other universities at Silverstone. The team now participate in Formula Student, Europe’s most established educational motorsport competition. “We design and build a race car from the ground up every year, and we race it at Silverstone against 130 universities from across the world. We’re judged on our design and manufacturing principles and the business logic behind the whole project. A typical day would be that we’re in a computer room designing parts, we conceptualise what we’re going to build, then we manufacture it, using all the facilities available at the University.” Corin Williams, BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering
“We do everything ourselves, from the chassis design, the aerodynamics, the bodywork – it’s going to be quite a hard challenge, but I’m really interested in motorsports, so bring it on! The teaching here is amazing, all the lecturers are really supportive. They’re always very keen to help you be the best that you can be.” Alexandra Guy, BEng (Hons) Aeronautical Engineering

START UP YOUR BUSINESS
So for any students that have a brilliant business idea but are unsure of the next steps, or for those thinking of going freelance, we can now help turn ideas into reality and provide support through all the vital steps of setting up in business, with the launch of a brand new, free office space for business ventures. In addition to hot-desking office space in the heart of Peel Park campus, you will have access to a networking lounge where you can grab a coffee and make those all important business connections. The Launch incubator also offers a wide range of support to make the venture of creating a business less daunting. In partnership with the Business Growth Hub we offer a six month support programme including workshops on specific aspects of building a business, as well as mentorship from experienced professionals and subject specific drop in sessions, delivered by staff from the Salford Business School. You will also have access to grants for vital start-up essentials such as software, insurances, licences, basic equipment, training or attendance at trade fairs.
“ T he Enterprise team were very supportive and helped me prepare for the launch of my business that ultimately led me to my first pitch. With this help, I was eligible for the Santander Start-Up Award, which helped me to fund photo shoots and vital equipment. If it wasn’t for the Enterprise team, I wouldn’t have been given the preparation needed to win the funding. I must say, something that I have been very lucky with, is that I’ve never felt like I was on my own at Salford when I was setting up these businesses.” Henry Romanenko, BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance student, has now established two businesses with our support, a luxury jewellery brand and a book-keeping business.
#BECOMEUNSTOPPABLE
At the University of Salford, no ambition is too big. If you’ve got a business idea of your own, our Enterprise team can help bring it to life through funding awards and business start-up support, and we’ve recently launched a brand new business incubation centre on campus to help.

STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD: GO ABROAD Employers are often looking for graduates with international study or work experience and research shows that students who take part in an exchange graduate with better grades than those who have not. You are also more likely to find employment and to progress up the career ladder*. Studying or working abroad gives you the opportunity to see more of the world and experience a different style of education. You may also be able to learn a new language and get to know another culture. At Salford, you can enhance your education by studying or working abroad, and we are here to help you make it happen. Whether you want to study or work in Europe, or study further afield, we have an experience to offer you. We currently run two schemes for our students – Erasmus+ and International Exchanges. * Gone International: Expanding Opportunities Report on the 2015-16 graduating cohort by Universities UK International.
DEVELOP YOUR LANGUAGE SKILLS WHILST STUDYING If you’re interested in learning a new language or progressing your existing skills, we offer modules here at Salford in a number of different languages, including Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. Language modules are available as part of several undergraduate courses, and are worth 20 credits each. ERASMUS+
INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE
Erasmus+ is for you if you are interested in studying or pursuing a work contract within Europe. We have many fantastic partner institutions all over Europe, from Sweden to France, Portugal to Cyprus, and Bulgaria to Turkey, as well as many industry links. If you have the option to undertake a work placement as a part of your degree, you may be able to do this through the Erasmus+ scheme.
If you want to venture further than Europe for a study exchange, our International Exchange programme is for you. With partners in Australia, Canada and the USA, you have the incredible opportunity to visit some fantastic places while taking advantage of the great facilities our partner institutions offer, and travelling to somewhere you may never have had the chance to otherwise.
Erasmus+ funding for training activities is also available to recent University of Salford graduates which are sourced and approved before graduation, and completed within one year. The European Commission funds Erasmus+ and they offer a monthly allowance to you when you study or work abroad through the programme, depending on the country you decide to go to.
Money needn’t be a barrier if you are considering going abroad. You continue to pay your usual tuition fees to the University, and you are still entitled to your student finance.
Please note, the Erasmus+ scheme is a European Union scheme and funding is currently guaranteed until May 2020. We hope that this will continue in either the same, or a similar scheme, and will share more details on our website when details are confirmed.
Studying abroad is a fantastic opportunity for you to develop yourself both personally and professionally, while making new friends from across the globe and acquiring skills that are attractive to potential employers.

STATE SIDE STUDY Student Sara Rooney had the opportunity to study in Toldeo, USA, for a year as part of her BSc (Hons) Biology course. She tells us a bit about her experience and the opportunities she was able to take during her year abroad. “My favourite thing about studying in the USA is the amazing people I’ve met and the beautiful places I’ve managed to visit during my free time! I’ve already managed to visit New York, Chicago, Canada and Las Vegas (to name a few). The exam structure and teaching styles in the USA are so different, it was challenging to adjust to the new system, but a really interesting experience. The University of Toledo has amazing amenities for students. The Sports Centre has three floors of standard exercise bikes and free weights, four basketball courts, an indoor running track, a ropes course, a climbing wall, an Olympic sized pool, a sauna and even an indoor water slide. On top of that they also have large football pitches, baseball pitches, volleyball pitches and tennis courts outside. Pretty much every sport imaginable is covered! Most of the Biology lecturers at Toledo know the Salford students by name, so they often go above and beyond to make sure we’re settling in and coping okay. The fact most of the classes are small, means teaching staff will happily address queries as they go along, and within larger classes
the lecturer will hang around afterwards, so you can ask any questions. All the staff hold weekly office hours specifically for your class, so you can also approach within this time with any problems.
“ C hoosing to study in the USA for a year was challenging and scary, but it has also been the best year of my life. It’s honestly a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the real America, travel and make amazing friends. If you have the opportunity, then I would fully encourage you to study in the USA.” Whilst studying in Toledo, I joined the Wilderness Expedition Club. They provided some really wonderful trips including skydiving, rock climbing, hiking and my favourite which involved canoeing down the Au Sable river in Michigan. All the students on the exchange also get free entry to the American Football games on campus which are wild! They have fireworks, dancers, cheerleaders and marching bands. It’s like nothing we have back in the UK. I lived in an apartment just off campus, there is a bus stop just outside that takes you around campus for free (very useful in the rain and snow!). The apartment complex also had a pool, a gym and BBQs for the residents to use.”

Three of our degrees currently offer a year in Toldeo as part of the course: BSc (Hons) Biochemistry with Studies in the USA, BSc (Hons) Biology with Studies in the USA and MPhys (Hons) Phsyics with Studies in North America. Find out more on the course pages on our website.

FEES AND FINANCE At the University of Salford, fees for students from the UK, EU*, Channel Islands and Isle of Man studying a full-time undergraduate degree are £9,250** per year for the first year of study. The fees for UK/EU part-time students will vary depending on the number of credits taken per year. Financial support is available to undergraduate students to help with the cost of university. Tuition fee loans, available for students from the UK and EU*, are paid directly to the University each term and you don’t need to pay anything upfront. If you’re studying full-time, you’ll receive a maximum of £9,250 per year, depending on the course. If you’re a part-time student, you’ll receive a maximum of £6,935 (figures correct at time of printing). * At the time of printing, it is unknown how the UK leaving the EU will impact on fees for EU students. 3/ TRANSPORT: A weekly bus ticket costs about £16, and a single ticket on the tram costs from around £3, depending on your destination. Manchester and the surrounding areas are also served by a number of convenient and attractive cycle routes.
4/ LEISURE: A cinema ticket costs from £5, and theatre tickets between £25-70. An evening meal at a restaurant with friends typically costs around £12-15 each, plus the cost of any drinks. There are many free events, galleries and museums in Salford and Manchester to keep you entertained on a budget though, and as a student, you are entitled to discounts in many shops, restaurants and cinemas.
5/ HEALTH AND FITNESS: The University gym membership costs between £14-£20* per month, depending on the facilities you choose to use. University sports teams will charge weekly membership fees, plus the cost of your kit.
FOOD AND GROCERIES: There are a range of supermarkets to suit every budget, as well as farmers markets and independent shops. Preparing fresh meals at home rather than buying pre-prepared or takeaway food will save you money. Don’t forget to budget for cleaning products and toiletries as well.
BOOKS AND STATIONERY: New textbooks for your course can be expensive, so make sure you use the library as much as possible, or buy books second-hand to save money. You can also buy textbooks and stationery using your Inspire account credits - see page 63 for details.
CLOTHES AND GROOMING: Things like haircuts and winter coats need to be included in your budget. The best way to find a good deal is to shop around – there are plenty of affordable hairdressers and clothing shops in Manchester (as well as online retailers), and don’t forget to ask if they offer a student discount!

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS If you’re a UK applicant leaving school or college, we accept the following qualifications: / A/AS level / BTEC Award / Welsh Baccalaureate / Access to Higher Education Diploma / Scottish Higher/Advanced Higher / Irish Leaving Certificate (Higher) / The International Baccalaureate / Cambridge Pre-U / UAL Diplomas in Art and Design / Rock School Music Practitioners qualifications This list is not exhaustive, we accept a wide variety of qualifications and look at applications on an individual basis.
Visit the full course information on our website to find out if this applies to the course you’re interested in. Our minimum entry requirement for a degree course is two A levels or equivalent, but some courses will require three A levels. If your chosen course is in science or engineering, please check our website to see whether A levels in physics, chemistry and biology where science practical assessments are taken are a requirement for entry. Most courses also require a minimum of grade 4 in GCSE English and maths, (or grade C for qualifications taken prior to 2017), or a grade C in both subjects where GCSEs are taken in Northern Ireland or Wales, however some may require a grade 5. International students will need to show a good level of English (usually a minimum of IELTS at 6.0 or above, with a minimum score of 5.5 in each component). This can vary depending on the course though, so please check the course information on our website for details.
UCAS TARIFF POINTS You can find out the number of UCAS points you’ll need by checking the list of courses at the back of this prospectus, though there will be additional grade and subject requirements for some courses. Visit the relevant course page on our website to check if this applies to your course. To find out more about UCAS Tariff Points and how they work, visit www.ucas.com
CHANGES TO QUALIFICATIONS Qualifications in the UK are currently going through significant change, and one outcome of this is that not all schools and colleges have the provision to teach AS levels alongside A levels. We also acknowledge that students in England will be assessed on a linear basis, whilst those in Wales and Northern Ireland will continue to be assessed on a modular basis. Where you are taking a combination of A and AS levels we will continue to accommodate these on an individual basis and the University will not disadvantage those who have not had the opportunity to take AS levels. If you are unsure how you may be affected, our enquiries team will be happy to help – call them on 0161 295 4545 or email enquiries@salford.ac.uk
WE VALUE EXPERIENCE Not everybody takes the same path in life, but that shouldn’t stop you from realising your potential. If you haven’t taken the traditional route through the education system but think you’ve got the experience and drive to pursue a degree, we want to hear from you. The Salford Alternative Entry Scheme offers two routes to learning, depending on your experience: the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL); or the Mature Students Admissions Pathway (MSAP UK). Find out if we can open up learning for you by visiting www.salford.ac.uk/salfordalternative-entry-scheme
INTERNATIONAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS If you have international qualifications, check our website for details of what we accept and their equivalences. Visit www.salford.ac.uk/ international/your-country

OTHER STUDY OPTIONS As well as three-year degrees, we also offer a wide range of other study options. Here’s some more information on our alternative study options including foundation years, partner college study, accelerated degrees and degree apprenticeships. For more details on the study options available for the subject you’re interested in visit the course pages on our website at www.salford.ac.uk
FOUNDATION YEARS At the University of Salford, we believe that higher education should be within reach for all those who are passionate about learning and achieving their career goals. If you’ve got the drive and commitment to study, but don’t quite have the qualifications needed to start an honours degree, a foundation year course could be for you. Our range of foundation courses can help to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to progress onto one of our undergraduate degrees. They’ll introduce you to key concepts and ideas, and provide you with basic knowledge of approaches, concepts, theories and principles. The foundation level places strong emphasis on the development of relevant study/transferable skills and a responsible approach to learning through a set of compulsory core modules. These are ideal if you want to develop your career but don’t meet the entry requirements for direct entry to an honours degree or have the appropriate background knowledge.
They are also suited to you if you are returning to education or if you wish to change career direction. You can see which of our degrees offer a foundation year in the course listings at the back of this booklet. You can also look at our course listings online for the latest information at www.salford.ac.uk
PARTNER COLLEGE STUDY As part of our commitment to giving more people access to higher education, we work with further education and sixth form colleges in the northwest to offer a wide range of courses where you can study locally with the option of progressing to the University of Salford to complete or continue your studies. This range of courses includes degrees and foundation degrees. Degree programmes provide the opportunity of studying the first year at a local college before progressing to the University to complete your degree. Foundation degree programmes are delivered at partner colleges and you can then apply to top up your studies to degree level at the University if you wish. Courses at our partner colleges currently include the areas of business, arts, sport and psychology. Please see our website for full details. To ensure you have the maximum chance of success whilst studying at a partner college, we provide a dedicated programme of support throughout the year. This includes talks by University academic staff to students at partner
More information about our partner colleges and the programmes we run is available on our website www.salford.ac.uk/partner-colleges
ACCELERATED DEGREES Featuring the same content as a traditional undergraduate degree, the accelerated degree is taught over three trimesters rather than two semesters. This more intense mode of study means that you can complete your degree in a shorter period of time, allowing you to progress more quickly into work or further study. If you choose to study one of our full-time accelerated degrees, you will complete it in two years rather than three. If you choose the dayrelease option, you will complete your degree in three years rather than five. You still have the option to complete a placement with the full-time accelerated mode of study, which would take three years to complete. There are three intakes across the academic year for all accelerated degrees, which are in September, January and June. Find out more at www.salford.ac.uk/built-environment/ accelerated-degree
DEGREE APPRENTICESHIPS A degree apprenticeship allows you to study at degree level whilst earning a salary and gaining practical, on-the-job skills. This work-based route to a degree means you will be working alongside industry experts gaining vital experience to help you excel in your chosen career. If you’re looking to gain a degree qualification along with experience in line with your chosen career path, then a degree apprenticeship could be the perfect route for you. You’ll have the ability to apply theory and knowledge from the classroom directly to your place of work on an ongoing basis. You will study part-time at the University and will spend the rest of your time in the workplace. These apprenticeships are funded by the government and your employer so there are no tuition fees to worry about. We work with a wide range of employers including Virgin Money, Peninsula, Laing O’Rourke, the NHS, HMG Paints, Morgan Sindall, Seddon Construction, New Charter Housing and Wilmott Dixon. We currently cover a wide range of disciplines, from business to nursing, biomedical science to construction and housing to engineering, and our offer will grow as the government approves new apprenticeship programmes. Find out more at www.salford.ac.uk/degree-apprenticeships
“The fact that this route offered me the chance to become RICS accredited and get a full degree in three years was a no brainer! I am able to relate my university work to my work within industry on a daily basis and I am getting the opportunity to work on my own projects.” Jack Hook, Trainee Quantity Surveyor, Met-Excel
“I am able to apply my learning to a real work environment which is fantastic. I really am having an amazing time on my degree apprenticeship and I wouldn’t change it for the world.” Danielle Gudojc, Trainee Estimator, Morgan Sindall
“ Leaving university with three years’ work experience is so valuable. At the end of the degree I’ll be a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist which means I’m ready to practice as soon as I graduate.” Bethany Carr, Trainee Biomedical Scientist, NHS

YOU’RE HIRED Chris Kehoe is a trainee quantity surveyor with the William Hare Group and is just starting out on his degree apprenticeship journey, studying a BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying here at Salford. We asked Chris why he chose this route and what he is looking forward to most. “I decided to do a degree apprenticeship when I realised I could get my degree fully funded and earn a salary at the same time, which is a pretty good deal! I knew that the engineering industry that I was keen to get into, really valued work experience, and so when I came across the degree apprenticeship route I knew it was for me. My employer is very supportive of degree apprenticeships which is great. Once I have
completed my degree apprenticeship, I will be fully qualified and have all the work experience behind me too – it really is win-win for both myself and my employer. I am really looking forward to applying my knowledge and being able to put into practice what I have learnt on a daily basis. I didn’t want to learn the theory side then have to wait until I have graduated to get out there and see how it actually works in real life. I’ll be studying on a day-release basis one day a week, and the rest of the week I’ll be in work. I think it will be challenging but as long as I am organised and can manage my time effectively, I’m sure it will work out!”
“ I would definitely recommend the degree apprenticeship route as I truly believe this will put you ahead of others in terms of your employability. The experience you gain in the workplace is invaluable and will put you in a great position in terms of your future career.”

INFORMATION YOU SHOULD BE AWARE OF BEFORE APPLYING TO STUDY WITH US We aim to give you information about our courses and fees as far in advance as possible to give you an idea of what is available and plenty of time to consider your options. However, this inevitably means there will be changes to the information between the date this guide is printed (January 2019) and the date we make you an offer, so we reserve the right to update any information in this guide. For example, we may need to withdraw or change a course or module for the following reasons: / where this benefits our students / where there is insufficient take-up by students to run it viably or to give students the appropriate educational experience / where we have to respond to unforeseen circumstances outside our control (such as requirements of any governmental, regulatory or professional bodies or the introduction of any new or modified laws or regulations). Before deciding whether to apply for a course, make sure you visit our website www.salford.ac.uk as this is our definitive, up-to-date and detailed source of information about our courses and fees (or contact our course enquiries team at +44 (0)161 295 4545 or enquiries@salford.ac.uk to request this information). All changes to information in this guide will be detailed on our website as soon as is reasonably practical. In the event of any inconsistencies between such information and our website, information on our website will prevail.
If your application for a particular course is successful, we will send you an offer letter which, depending on your circumstances, may require you to fulfil certain conditions before you join us. If you accept the offer in our offer letter, you will have a legally binding contract with us on the date you accept – even if you still have outstanding conditions to fulfil at the date you accept. However, the contract will be automatically cancelled if you do not meet any of the conditions on which the offer is made. Our offer letter will set out (or provide links to) everything you need to know about the terms and conditions of the contract (including fees and payment) and all of our academic and other regulations, rules and procedures which apply to students. To give you an idea what to expect, the versions of these documents for the 2018/19 academic year are accessible via the University’s website at www.salford.ac.uk/askus/academicsupport/student-handbook. However, as these versions are likely to change before you join us, we remind you that our offer letter will provide you with the most up-to-date versions should you accept our offer. It is a requirement for all students to register with us at the start of each academic year and only students who are registered may study our courses and access our facilities. Information about what you need to do to register will be provided. The personal information that you provide to us (whether as an applicant or as a registered student) will be held and processed by the University in accordance with the Data Protection Act (2018) and the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). Please read our privacy statement for more details at www.salford.ac.uk/privacy
POLICY STATEMENT ON EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY The University is committed to, and strives for, equality of opportunity for all its students and staff (current and prospective) and recognises and celebrates their diversity. For this statement and strategy to be made a reality, effective leadership and management is provided and a corresponding commitment sought from every member of staff and all the student body. In practice this means that we: / are committed to providing an environment where all people are respected and treated fairly regardless of irrelevant characteristics or distinctions / will develop a culture in which diversity is celebrated / will not discriminate unfairly or illegally against anyone and will take positive action to promote equality and diversity / embed equality and diversity at the heart of our mission and values, this will include taking action against individuals who behave in a discriminatory manner

HOW TO APPLY
To make your application to Salford smooth and stress-free, follow this step-by-step guide and make a note of the important dates and deadlines.
STEP 5 After applying, you should start thinking about how you’ll fund your studies – usually through a student loan. For more details visit www.gov.uk/studentfinance
STEP 1 Think about what you really want to know - not just about your course, but where you’ll live, the experiences you’ll gain, the people you’ll meet. Attend UCAS fairs, go to careers events held in your school or college, talk to your teachers and careers advisor too.
STEP 2 Book on to one of our Open Days in June and October 2019 by going to www.salford.ac.uk/undergraduate/open-days. Open Days are your opportunity to meet current students and teaching staff and get a feel for where you’ll study. Before you arrive, make a note of all your burning questions to ask our staff and students.
STEP 3
STEP 4
When you’ve made up your mind about which course you want to take, apply online through www.ucas.com before 15 January 2020 to guarantee consideration. You can still apply after this date but we can’t guarantee your application will be considered as some courses may close.
Once your application has been received, it will be considered and we might ask you to come and meet us for an interview or audition, depending on your course. After this, we’ll make a decision and let you know the outcome via UCAS Track.
STEP 7 Once you’ve received an offer, you should start to think about accommodation. Find out more about your accommodation options at www.salford.ac.uk/accommodation
STEP 6 If you are made a conditional or unconditional offer, we’ll invite you to an Applicant Visit Day, which will take place between February and April 2020.
STEP 8
MAY
STEP 10
STEP 9
Depending on what you’re currently studying, you should receive your results in July or August. If you’ve met the conditions for your course at Salford, we’ll let you know via UCAS Track that your place is confirmed. If your results were different to those you expected, there may be options open to you through clearing.
In order to guarantee your student finance is in place before you start in September, you should apply by the end of May 2020. You can check deadlines and apply at www.gov.uk/apply-online-forstudent-finance
WELCOME You’ll be invited to our Welcome Week in September 2020, during which you can complete your registration, meet new friends, explore the campus and city - and most importantly, have fun!
