Welcome
This yearbook showcases and celebrates the talent, tenacity and creativity of our students in Architecture and Design at the University of Salford.
As I write this twenty months into the pandemic, the “before time” can be difficult to recall – when communal studio time was the norm, when Teams was a niche app, when collaboratively developing designs online was so technically complex nobody really attempted it. How much things have changed.
Since March 2020 the workflow of Architecture & Design students has been thrown up in the air. My colleagues in the Architecture and Design group have had to develop new ways of facilitating learning and in doing so they have demonstrated enormous amounts of imagination and have invested unprecedented levels of time and energy to ensure that our students have the best opportunities to succeed.
Brodie McAdam Director Sustainable Built and Natural Environments School of Science, Engineering and Environment
I took over my role of Director in the combined School of Science Engineering and Environment in 2019. I remember being asked in my interview what my plan was for my first 100 days, and answering “keeping the show on the road”. I had in mind only the challenges of bringing together different disciplines into a coherent unit.
Not long after I gave that answer the road was taken out from under all of us, and I am enormously impressed at the way that Architecture and Design staff and students managed to navigate a path through this turbulent period to a successful graduation. Very well done!

Interior Architecture
Architecture shapes the world around us. As an architect, you will design new buildings, modify and advise on existing structures and historically significant buildings and spaces. You will work with many industries, collaborate with engineers and construction partners to create, transform and inspire. Our course is designed for those who have a passion for architecture and wish to develop their understanding of architecture and their skills in design. Having received unconditional Part 1 validation from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), this course satisfies the requirements of the Architects Registration Board and provides the crucial first stage in your seven-year education to become a chartered architect. Consistently ranked amongst the World Top 100 (QS world ranking 2018) centres for Architecture studies, we are committed to ensuring that you develop the knowledge and skills you need for your career..
The Architecture Design and Technology programme at the University of Salford (certified by CIAT) continues to go from strength to strength. This year has seen students from the ADT foundation year joining the ADT degree programme. Also this year will be the first where student undertaking the two year accelerated ADT degree programme will qualify.
The BSc (Hons) Architectural Engineering Programme received its first students two years ago, in 2017. The course aims to create a graduate designer with enhanced understanding of structural engineering principles that can become a vital members of a successful building project team, making the connection between architecture and engineering. Architectural Engineering sits within a school that is consistently ranked in the world top 100 universities for architecture and built environment study (QS 2019), and collaborates with academics from the School of Engineering. Our students have the opportunity to work on live industry briefs that enhance their real-world knowledge and understanding. By studying architectural engineering, our students can learn how to balance science, technology and creativity, which can open up career roles shaping the new generation of urban development in our cities. We are expecting the graduation of our first cohort in 2020.
A key challenge for society today is to repurpose vacant existing buildings in a sustainable way. By studying interior architecture, you can learn how to combine art and science, which can open up career roles shaping the spaces where work, rest, learn and play.
New tutors have also made a significant contribution to the programme. Jim Sloan has been teaching on the Construction Technology in Architecture module and the Environment Architectural Technology module. While Paul Blindell has been developing the BIM Design Studio 2 module. Additional BIM training has been introduced at Level 4. This year level 5 student have undertaken on a multidisciplinary module the design and detailing for a University Research centre for Recycling and Sustainability. Level 6 students have designed and detailed an Innovation Hub as an extension to the Adelphi building. Final year students were given the opportunity to attend the Biennale in Venice (an exhibition showcasing innovative architecture from around the world). Students from the programme remain in great demand being sort after by the industry.
Interior Architecture with Foundation Year course is an excellent route if you’re from a non-industry background, new to higher education, or seeking to develop your career in a new direction. Providing immersion in construction, surveying and design techniques, the foundation year pathway is designed to help you meet the prerequisites for the full BSc (Hons) Interior Architecture degree. Salford is a great choice for interior architecture. We’re consistently ranked in the world top 100 universities for architecture and built environment study (QS 2019), located at the heart of the largest property and construction market outside of London. Throughout the course, you’ll be developed professionally to ensure that you are working to the standards recognised by interior architecture/design professional bodies. With our industry-focused learning approach, you’ll visit local projects and receive live industry briefs that enhance your real-world knowledge and understanding. You’ll join a vibrant multidisciplinary community, learning alongside architects, architectural design technologists, building surveyors, construction managers and quantity surveyors.
Master of Architecture The Architecture Masters (MArch) is designed for those who are passionate about architecture, have an appetite for ideas, and a desire to experiment. Enriched with technical skills, ‘live’ briefs and practice-based action learning, it offers you a challenging, yet rewarding experience. Salford is a leading centre for architecture teaching and research. Led by international experts, we’re consistently ranked in the World Top 100 (QS 2019) for architecture and built environment study. Our two-year MArch course blends theory and practice to build your capabilities so you’re ready to be a responsible designer, reflective practitioner and creative innovator in contemporary society. During your studies, you’ll learn in purposebuilt design studios and bespoke spaces that house the specialist equipment and tools
you’ll need to inspire your creativity and execute your ideas. You’ll explore architectural relationship between ecological and human systems, and apply and test your design skills. You’ll critically examine histories and theories in generating cultural values related to making places. You’ll develop critiques on current architecture and design, and gain the knowledge and confidence to propose alternative ideas. The MArch at Salford is prescribed at Part 2 Level by the UK Regulator of Architects, the Architects’ Registration Board (ARB) until 30 May 2024. If you successfully complete the MArch and hold a recognised undergraduate Part 1 qualification, you can progress to complete the final UK qualification examination as an architect – the Part 3 Diploma – and will then be eligible to register as an architect and to join the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
