LAUNCH ANNUAL REPORT
2020/21 THE SKY ISN’T THE LIMIT.

INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION FROM INCUBATION MANAGEMENT In 2020-2021 we have had a very exciting year of growth and fantastic new programmes at Launch. At the beginning of the academic year, the team has moved to our Salford Business School to better align with institutional priorities. We had a very warm welcome and much support from our SBS colleagues and fantastic leadership from our Associate Dean Enterprise & Engagement, Dr. Francine Morris. This year we also had continuous support from our partners and sponsors: Santander Universities and GC Business Growth Hub and for which I’d like to extend our warmest thanks. This was our best year to date, despite the world pandemic and having to deliver our service remotely, we have reaffirmed that our students are resilient, keen to learn and take charge of their careers. We ran two cohorts of the Launch Incubator, supporting 51 student businesses and introduced new initiatives to engage with more students across the University. For the first time ever, we held the Launch Business Challenge, Festival of Entrepreneurship & Innovation and the Launch Global programmes. We provided a total of 86 workshops and supported 305 students and graduates through all of the Launch programmes. We awarded £96,000 in grant funds to aspiring entrepreneurs to start their business. We worked with 36 external speakers and organisations such as GC Business Growth Hub, Santander Universities, HOST at Media City, Salford City Council and Salford Foundation. At Launch we are committed to providing an inclusive student experience and have a strong commitment to international students, BAME entrepreneurs and female founders. Through the Launch Global programme, we supported 57 international students and 8 of them received grant funding totalling £12,000. This year 45% of our business owners were female and 56% of our attendees on Launch events were from minority ethnic backgrounds. We supported our students to also take part in the Santander Black Inclusion programme, resulting in 25 Salford students receiving training and 1 student receiving scholarship funding of £1500 through this national scheme. Through our Santander grant funding, we awarded 6 Female Entrepreneurs with up to £3000 of funding for their business. In Addition, 12 out of 27 Santander Award winners were from minority ethnic backgrounds. We also encourage our students to give back to local community and ensure that their business ideas are sustainable and ethical. 20 students from across the University took part in the Launch
/ Justyna Turner Launch Incubation Manager
Business Challenge, working with a local charity, Salford Foundation to help them connect with their beneficiaries and come up with solutions to the charity’s challenges. The winning teams won grants totalling £5,000 that were sponsored by Santander. We held our first ever Festival of Entrepreneurship & Innovation, which ran over 5 weeks including business workshops, business competitions and virtual networking events. Our audience was a mix of students, alumni and external business community members. We issued 1500 tickets for the festival and our audience attended events 588 times. We focused on key themes of entrepreneurship: local, global, creative, innovations and we also showcased our Launch talent. We held our first ever Launch Showcase Competition that was open to all businesses from Cohorts from 1-6 and 15 students won £13,500 in grant funding. In addition to all our external supporters, 30 staff from across the university have been involved in supporting Launch this year. Thank you to all colleagues who were involved in the above-mentioned initiatives and supported our students with sharing their business knowledge and expertise this year.

"Launch has been transformational to our business. It gave us the knowledge and contacts to develop ourselves further, and taught us crucial things about sales and marketing that we'd be lost without. Although we aren't exactly where we hoped we'd be 6 months ago, we are a much stronger business with the funds and the knowhow to start getting clients on board. Thank you!" Jade McLaren, VenU "The Launch enterprise is one amazing program [...] Thanks to Jess, Justyna, Ash, Isabelle, I am really catching up with my business and thanks to them this program made such a difference." Ondrej Obediar, Panacea Protective Equipment "I really enjoyed this programme. I think it’s a great starting point and the sessions were informative and helpful." Emily Johnson, SmallTalkUK "Thought the programme was excellently delivered and gave us lots of insights that will help us to anticipate and overcome the pitfalls of starting a new business. Thanks a lot everyone!" Martin Higgins, Balleri's
"I had already started my business but wasn't going to take it too seriously, until I completed Launch and felt more passionate it and took it more seriously! I've now managed to leave my job to pursue the business fully." Cedric Hirwa Manzi, Elleestparfait "This programme has been amazing, I learnt so much and feel like I know what I am doing and how to do it now. The funding opportunities were great too, definitely going to be a great help. The mentors, Jess and Justyna and the people that put on the workshops were all amazing." Krystal Evans, Little Paws Doggy Daycare "The lectures at Launch have been super helpful to someone like myself with little real world experience, and I've greatly enjoyed learning about other people's experiences and having my own ideas explored. Thank you!" Jack Adams, Lifebloom

LAUNCH BUSINESS CHALLENGE
LAUNCH BUSINESS CHALLENGE This year we collaborated with Salford Foundation for our very first Launch Business Challenge. With 65 applicants and over 20 team members, 5 teams took on one of two challenges set by Salford Foundation to help the broader Salford community. All 5 teams pitched LIVE in the final for a chance to win part of our £5000 funding pot (sponsored by Santander) and a place on our Launch programme. 65 Applicants and 14 successful applicants in 5 teams. £5000 awarded to our competitors, with £100 for each team making it to the final and two grand prize winners of £1875 for the winning two teams. Sponsored by Santander. Also, Phil East, CEO of Salford Foundation joined us on the judging panel to select our winners & runners up for the Launch Business Challenge!
THE CHALLENGES LEARNING CITY Salford Foundation project, working with Salford City Council based at the Women’s Centre in Eccles. This is a place for disadvantaged women where they can engage in soft learning and re-engage into education. There is a need to recognise and accredit the existing life skills and experience of these women to increase their confidence in accessing education and employment opportunities. The challenge is to come up with a digital solution to capture the skills and experiences of these women and provide them with certificates. Things to consider are limited digital skills and ensuring a user friendly and engaging experience.
DIGITAL BUDDIES Salford Foundation programme which connect young people with older beneficiaries to increase digital skills of the beneficiaries. This project supports older residents in making social connections through use of smart devices. The current process of matching and logging interactions is manual and uses spreadsheet, so there is a need to create a central system to manage the interactions. There are some things to consider: human aspect around access and existing digital skills, safeguarding and security of beneficiaries.

After graduating from her MA in Music: Composition, Adina joined Cohort 3 of our Launch programme with her business as a composer. Adina has sky rocketed into the male-dominated world of music and composition since graduating from Launch, working on a multitude of projects. CEEWHY OCHOGA
BLACK IMPACT
Ceewhy’s journey at the University of Salford has been truly inspiring, completing her Masters in Media Psychology in 2017, while serving as the first Black President of the University of Salford’s Student Union. Ceewhy secured a Start Up Visa with the Enterprise team as a graduate and created Black Impact as a response to the systematic racism and racial biases in education and employment. Black Impact supports Black students to achieve greatness in University and future employment. Ceewhy has successfully conducted multiple seminars and ceremonies, including Black Impact’s Class of 2020 awards; an initiative designed to encourage and celebrate Black successes. The current pandemic hasn’t stopped Black Impact from uplifting Black student communities as they prepare for their Class of 2021 event, with plenty more events in the pipeline!
VICTORIA MERNESS
LITTLE HOUSE OF VICTORIA Victoria joined us on Cohort 4 while studying on her MA Contemporary Art Practise and successfully secured £2000 of Start Up Funding from Santander. Over 16 sessions, our students worked hard to develop their business models, culminating in video pitching for start up funding and we were very pleased to award 8 winners up to £2000 of funding!

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT FEEDBACK “The Launch Global programme was great, insightful and informative. Also, all the panellists and moderators have been helpful and open to answering individual questions. I think it would’ve been even better if students and graduate participants were encouraged to network. The breakout rooms were great, but there’s no way of following up any interesting conversations that sprang up with other participants. The session with Elaine was great! She’s super nice, supportive and helpful. She pointed out what I needed to improve on, but she also commended what I did well. I also gained a lot of useful insights on my brand messaging. I’d like to say many thanks to the whole Launch team and Launch global for a good experience. I look forward to applying to the Launch Incubator!” Aliyu Yisa

She has been encouraging us to engage with speakers, classmates and participate in the Competition, which is one thing that I have never thought I would do one day. Thanks very much for this outstanding experience.” Paul Waihumbu

The resources will include a range of diverse materials which will aid the client’s understanding of the many complex areas of law. For example, The Nerdy Spoonie will design a flowchart to illustrate the stages which take place in order for a Bill to become legislation. They also format the resources to accommodate students with certain learning styles. As an example, for students who are visual learners, resources will be designed which use colour coding to help them retain important information such as the judgments of certain cases or essential legislation. The main unique selling point of The Nerdy Spoonie is empathy and accessibility. Hannah created The Nerdy Spoonie as a result of her own experiences as a Law student. Hannah turned to certain services in order to aid her independent learning outside of lectures and seminars, finding that a majority of these services either cared more about a student’s money rather than the student’s learning or lacked sufficient necessary information which would assist the student in their studies. The Nerdy Spoonie resources sold on the website will be affordable and will provide the necessary in-depth information which will aid the student’s independent learning.

ESOPIP CHILDREN’S MEDIA
Esopip Children’s Media is a production company specialising in the production of entertaining and educational media content created for African children in Africa and the African diaspora. This idea came about as a result of Oghomwen looking around for media content on the Internet for African children that had characters and storylines that African children could relate with. Oghomwen’s discussions with African parents living in the UK, many of them expressed that their children watch a lot of content online (most especially YouTube) however; they would love it if their children could be exposed to more programs with black/ African characters. The content on the Internet was so few that Oghomwen decided to create the content herself so the idea for Esopip Children’s Media was born.

Linkschild a solution that connects nurseries, schools and child minders to parents, keeping them abreast of their child’s daily activities and performance. The solution will leverage Artificial Intelligence to provide deeper insights into kids’ aptitudes to help parents (and teachers) educate the children better. It also provides the school with easy organisation of documentation, helping them save time and money. UK nurseries need a solution that makes it easy for them to keep track of the children and their development. Such a solution also helps them keep parents informed of their children’s daily activities and progress. There are several existing solutions in the market that do this right now, but none of them take the next step of helping nurseries/schools and parents understand the aptitudes of their children. This solution will be leveraging Artificial Intelligence to form a profile of the child over time. The software comes with a library with a variety of activities to engage children and then learns about their interests and aptitudes. It will also leverage details from in-school activities that the teachers share with their parents to inform its profile of a child.
