PROTECT OUR NATURAL WORLD
Human behaviour is having a detrimental impact on the natural world. As we lose more precious biodiversity, we need to make moves to protect it.
Biologists study organisms and the relationship they have with their environment. They work to solve some of the biggest challenges currently faced by people and the planet today – fighting disease, preserving the environment and protecting endangered species.
By studying a biological science or wildlife-based degree at Salford, you can develop the skills and knowledge to make a difference. Delivered by our team of expert scientists, our courses are packed with practical learning experiences - all shaped by our career-focused, industry approach.
If you see your future as a next-generation scientist, start your journey with Salford. Read on and discover our degree courses with a difference.
UNSTOPPABLE
A biological sciences degree provides an excellent basis for careers in biomedicine, biotechnology, conservation, the pharmaceutical or food industries, research or teaching. You could find roles at pharmaceutical companies, environment agencies, hospitals, forensic laboratories and clinical trials companies. Alternatively, you might choose to focus on science marketing and communications, working at medical writing companies or scientific sales companies.
Marine Biology graduates can enter a wide range of career paths. These include careers such as marine life conservation and management, science communication and publishing, and science administration.
Zoology graduates can enter a wide range of vocations in biological or life sciences. These include careers in areas such as zoo work, wildlife conservation and management, and science communication and publishing.
Conservation graduates can expect to find related roles at voluntary and government conservation organisations, environmental consultancies, environmental education and in zoos. Previous students have advanced to gain hands-on roles at zoos, country parks, animal sanctuaries and environmental consultancies.

SALFORD EXPERIENCE
FIELD TRIPS
Our biology and wildlife-based courses take you out of the classroom and into the field.
There are field trip opportunities, both in the UK and internationally, for students across our biology, zoology, marine biology and wildlife conservation courses. If you’re looking to include a placement year as part of your degree, we can use our extensive network to help you find opportunities with leading companies and research institutes at sites across the UK, Europe, Asia and the USA.
Students on our biology and wildlife courses may have the chance to volunteer for zoological studies at sites such as the Orangutan Tropical Peatland Project in Borneo; Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation in Canada; Serra dos Órgãos National Park in Brazil or closer to home at Blackpool Zoo or Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
LABORATORY LIFE
As a science student, you’re going to spend lots of time in our laboratories. So, we’ve made sure that you will study in some of the best around.
In 2015, Sir Walter Bodmer opened our teaching and research laboratories. These newly refurbished and well-equipped, purpose-built facilities, ensure that our students benefit from using the latest technologies and that learning remains on the cutting-edge of innovation and discovery.
The Bodmer Lab includes industry standard instrumentation including cell culture facilities, histology specimen preparation station, FACS, MALDI-TOF, LC and GC mass spectrometry, FTIR and FTNMR spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy. Having access to this industry-standard technology means that you’ll be fully prepared and equipped to enter professional laboratories with confidence.
STUDENT SOCIETIES
University life is not just about study - it’s about meeting new people too! Our students run a range of societies, from academia to sports, politics to the environment, performance to faith, where you can find like-minded students (or totally different!) and create a place to socialise, relax or even gain extra skills.
We’re biased but we’re especially proud of our Wildlife Society, which is open to students studying any course across the university. Their latest activities include nature-spotting events, animal surveys, online talks, film screenings and many more social events.
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
Looking after our environment is an important part of what we’re working towards at Salford. You’ll also have the opportunity to get involved with university-wide environmental initiatives, like our Hedgehog friendly campus group which helps keep biodiversity on our campus, our #gogreensalford month promotes a variety of sustainability goals, and lots of on-campus environmental events.
BIOLOGY AND WILDLIFE DEGREE COURSES
We’ve developed an exciting range of professionally-accredited degree courses that will prepare you for a next-generation career learning more about our natural world – and helping to protect it.
Gain a broad and deep understanding of the living world with a Biological Sciences degree (Page 11). Through our exclusive partnership with University of Toledo, you have the option to spend your second year studying in the USA.
If the natural world is where you want to focus your science studies, choose to specialise in the study of marine organisms and safeguarding ocean life with a Marine Biology degree (Page 12), or focus on Wildlife Conservation (Page 14) or Wildlife Conservation with Zoo Biology (Page 15) Or, why not consider a degree in Zoology (Page 13) and focus your studies on learning the anatomy, behaviour and evolution of all animals.
FOUNDATION YEAR PATHWAY INDUSTRY PLACEMENTS
The foundation year entry pathway is an ideal study route if you don’t meet the criteria for direct entry to the honours degree course, if you are returning to education, or if you wish to change direction. Our foundation year will introduce key scientific concepts, theories and principles, and also help you to build essential higher education skills. On successful completion, you’ll be ready to join your chosen full honours degree course.
As one of the first UK universities to introduce industry placements, we continue to champion this career-enhancing experience. On all of our biology and wildlife-based courses, you can include an industry placement between years two and three. By including a placement in your studies, you can apply the knowledge you’ve developed, build extra skills and stand out in the competitive graduate job market.
