The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrates how vulnerable we all are to the emergence of viruses and diseases. To better prepare for future pandemics and other associated global health issues, we need more scientists ready to make new discoveries and help fight them.
Science is an evolving field, with advancements in technology and discoveries such as genomic sequencing opening up new areas of study. Biomedical science professionals are applying new knowledge in healthcare and related research to combat global diseases. Chemical science professionals are exploring the atoms and molecules that make our world, discovering solutions for real-world problems in health, energy and industry.
Drawing on our longstanding science expertise, we’ve created a range of courses to shape graduates who can address these challenges and be ready to make new scientific breakthroughs. Delivered by research-based academics and professionals using our world-class Bodmer laboratories, these professionally-accredited courses provide specialist knowledge to build advanced technical and transferable skills.
If you see your future as a next-generation scientist, start your journey with Salford. Read on and discover our degree courses with a difference.
Biochemistry, Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Science degrees are gateways to career opportunities in the biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, food and brewing industries. They can also lead to research and roles in clinical settings in biomedical science, forensic science and analytical biochemistry.
Biochemists with physiology knowledge are in demand in sports science, healthcare, hospitals, and the pharmaceutical industries. Recent alumni have secured roles in hospitals working on clinical trials in the metabolism sections, and at large pharmaceutical companies among other areas.
Our Biomedical Science and Human Biology and Infectious Diseases graduates typically secure roles in a wide range of career fields, including medical research with organisations such as AstraZeneca or Cancer Research UK, various roles within the NHS, teaching and management. A Biomedical Science degree with Salford can also open up postgraduate progression into areas such as medicine. The IBMS course accreditation provides a guarantee of teaching and learning quality.
As a science student, you’re going to spend lots of time in our laboratories. So, we’ve made sure that you will study in some of the best around.
In 2015, Sir Walter Bodmer opened our teaching and research laboratories. These newly refurbished and well-equipped, purpose-built facilities ensure that you benefit from using some of the latest technologies, so that your learning remains at the cutting-edge of innovation and discovery.
The Bodmer Lab is host to industry standard instrumentation including cell culture facilities, histology specimen preparation station, FACS, MALDI-TOF, LC and GC mass spectrometry, FTIR and FTNMR spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy.
Having access to this industry-standard technology means that you’ll be fully prepared and equipped to enter professional laboratories environments with confidence.
Our GEMMS programme supports Biomedicine graduates aspiring to apply for graduate entry medicine, dentistry, and physician associate studies. This programme provides mentorship in interview techniques, communication and debating skills, ethical scenarios, UKCAT/BMAT/GAMSAT training etc, as well as organising a series of inspirational lectures from clinicians and medical students.
We also offer tailored career support for students who are interested in becoming a biomedical scientist, including job application support, mock interviews, and help with finding work experience. For students who are more interested in a research-based career, we host a working group with advice on how to begin a career in research, as well as regular job postings via our lecturers’ UK-wide academic connections.
STUDENT SOCIETIES
University is not just about study; it is also a place to make lifelong friendships. Our students run a range of societies, from academia to sports, politics to the environment, performance to faith, where you can find like-minded students (or totally different!) and create a place to socialise, relax or even gain extra skills.
We’re especially proud of our Biomedical Society. Their recent activites include the development of ‘Bioscientist magazine’, put together with the help of a grant from the Institute of Biomedical Science, a regular book club, the ‘Bioart’ Competition and much more.

As a biomedical and chemical science student, you will be joining a science community at Salford which is at the forefront of tackling some of today’s most important challenges.
Our Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) is an international, vibrant, collaborative unit of inter-disciplinary researchers. Our research addresses diverse problems in biomedical sciences and health, and it is aligned with local, national and global focus on healthy ageing.
We work closely with regional hospitals and have established wider national and international collaborations with universities and research centres, focussing on new and improved treatments on a diverse range of diseases.
Our research ranges from identifying cancer stem cell metabolism processes and molecular biomarkers through to understanding the impact of zoonotic and pathogenic microbes on human and animal health.
Industry is in our DNA. Through our strong, longstanding relationships with regional and national science practices and institutions, you will have access to industry insight and placement opportunities.
Kidscan is a cancer research charity with laboratories based at the University of Salford. It is rare for a charity to be based at a university and its location enables Salford students to access unique opportunities to progress their careers and boost their CVs through placements and fundraising activities with the charity.
On a typical Kidscan placement, our biomedicine and chemical science students get to work with cancer researchers to produce new drugs and treatments for children with cancer. Watch our video to meet some of the current students building new knowledge on their Kidscan placement.

We’ve developed an exciting range of professionally-accredited degree courses to prepare you for a next-generation science career.
If the COVID-19 pandemic has you fascinated about how we identify and manage viruses, satisfy your interests with our Biomedical Science degree (Page 11). This IBMS- accredited course will focus your knowledge on biomedicine and the development of diagnosis, monitoring and treatment. You could also consider our Human Biology and Infectious Diseases degree (Page 12) which takes a more specialised approach, exploring the pathology, transmission and epidemiology of infectious diseases.
If Chemistry is your science subject of choice, look no further than our Chemistry degree (Page 14). Alternatively, you can focus on the dynamic discipline of Biochemistry (Page 13) and apply your knowledge to a variety of emerging areas, including medicine, agriculture, and food science. You can also choose to take your Biochemistry studies stateside with a year in the USA.
If you are interested in making new materials, analysing scenarios, helping to cure diseases, or understanding how medicines are designed, consider our Pharmaceutical Science (Page 15).
The foundation year entry pathway is an ideal study route if you don’t meet the criteria for direct entry to the honours degree course, if you are returning to education, or if you wish to change direction. Our foundation year will introduce key scientific concepts, theories and principles, and also help you to build essential higher education skills. On successful completion, you’ll be ready to join your chosen full honours degree course.
As one of the first UK universities to introduce industry placements, we continue to champion this career-enhancing experience. All of our biomedical and chemical science courses include the option to include an industry placement between years two and three. By including a placement in your studies, you can apply the knowledge you’ve developed, build extra skills and stand out in the competitive graduate job market.
