MORE THAN JUST A DEGREE

When you study in Greater Manchester, you'll be at the centre of innovation, education, industry and culture and you'll be in a part of the country where economic potential and scope for growth exceeds that of any other UK city region outside London*. This means that Salford is not only a great place to study, but also to live, work and for future prospects.

At Salford you’ll experience the best of both worlds, you’ll be only 20 minutes’ walk away from the buzz of Manchester city centre, with shops, restaurants, arts and culture, and at the same time you’ll get a real sense of community from living and studying on a campus university.

Salford as a city is undergoing a significant amount of change through a large amount of investment, and we’re right at the heart of that journey with the Crescent Masterplan, an £800 million investment plan designed to transform Salford over the coming years. We’ve also invested heavily in our own campus facilities, for example the new £65 million Science and Engineering building, Energy House 2.0, a new, world-leading research centre in energy efficient housing design, as well as being the home to the new North of England Robotics Innovation Centre.

Industry connections are at the heart of everything we do. We form strong partnerships with businesses and organisations from all sectors, working hand-in-hand with them to develop courses that are up-to-date and relevant to today’s challenges, helping you to graduate confident and ready to step into your chosen career.

You'll be really well supported throughout your time with us and our dedicated student service askUS can help you with anything you need.It doesn't matter what it is, from help with your academic studies or wellbeing support, to visa advice, disability support or careers guidance, you'll be signposted to help and advice whenever you need it.

At Salford we’re all here to support you to succeed and to become unstoppable.

All best wishes,

DR SAM GROGAN Pro Vice-Chancellor Student Experience

SPORT

Manchester is world famous for its sport. The iconic Manchester United Football Club is just five kilometres from our campus, and Old Trafford Cricket Ground is close by too. Manchester City FC is located at Sportcity, where you can play sports including tennis, football and squash and is also home to one of the world’s finest and fastest board tracks at the HSBC UK National Cycling Centre.

The UK’s longest indoor ski slope is found in Manchester too – you can go along and enjoy the real snow, even if you don’t want to ski or snowboard!

CULTURE AND ART

Manchester is a key centre for the arts, and you can see exhibitions from some of the world’s most famous artists at the city’s numerous museums, including the Museum of Science and Industry, galleries and performance spaces. Entry is usually free or discounted for students.

You can also enjoy wandering down Greater Manchester’s famous canals, admiring the cotton mills, a proud part of our industrial heritage.

MUSIC AND THEATRE

Manchester and Salford have a rich history of producing famous musicians and bands. There are many music venues around the city, such as the Manchester Arena which attracts artists such as Adele, Ed Sheeran and many other international artists, while the superb Bridgewater Hall is the home of the world-famous Hallé Orchestra. There are four major theatres to choose from, hosting plays, musicals, operas and ballets. The Lowry Theatre, named after the Salford artist LS Lowry, hosts plays, comedy shows, dance performances and gallery exhibitions, and is right on our doorstep next to

We’ve got ambitious plans for the future too and our campus continues to evolve and grow. Our doors are also open to industry, and you’ll often brush shoulders with staff from commercial organisations using our facilities for testing products or training their staff. Here’s just a taster of our facilities... WE HAVE A LONG HISTORY OF PROVIDING PEOPLE WITH THE TOOLS THEY NEED TO SUCCEED. As part of the suite, we also have an immersive simulation room, allowing students to be transported to any environment without having to leave the suite. The technology combines a series of cameras which project realistic images onto the walls, with audio equipment to transform the space into anything from the back of an ambulance to a nightclub, prison cell or family home. SIMULATION SUITE

Set up just like a hospital ward, the suite is equipped with human patient simulators, including two adults, a newborn baby, a child and a birthing mum. You’ll learn how to perform vital procedures that you’ll use throughout your career, under the supervision of trained practitioners.

A HIGHLIGHT LIST OF HIDDEN GEMS ON CAMPUS –the city you live in also shapes how you learn and the person you become.

THE THEATRE, LOCATED IN THE NEW ADELPHI BUILDING ON OUR PEEL PARK CAMPUS, HAS AN EXCITING EVENTS CALENDAR WITH LIVE MUSIC, ART, COMEDY AND PERFORMANCE EVENTS.

With work on show from established, international touring companies to emerging artists and our own students, we are proud to host a diverse programme with something for everyone.

At its heart, our vision is committed to nurturing the emerging talents of our graduates, supporting the work of our postgraduates and fostering partnerships with regional, national and international artists.

SALFORD MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY WAS THE UK’S ‘FIRST FREE PUBLIC LIBRARY’, WHICH OPENED IN JANUARY 1850. The building was a mansion house known as Lark Hill, which had been built in the 1790s and has given its name to the museum’s famous Lark Hill Place; a Victorian street within the museum.

Today, Salford Museum and Art Gallery presents an exciting programme of permanent displays and changing contemporary exhibitions from its home adjacent to our Peel Building on Peel Park campus. We’d also recommend a visit to the gift shop, which showcases work from local artists and designers, and don’t forget to try one of the café’s homemade cakes!

HEALTH SUPPORT

If you don’t feel comfortable talking about a problem or worry with friends, family or your tutor, it can sometimes be easier to speak to someone you don’t know. Wellbeing Advisers provide you with a confidential non-judgmental space where you feel listened to. They will help to explore solutions for any emotional problems you may be experiencing.

We have a mental health nurse, a psychologist and three social workers who are accessible through an appointment with a Wellbeing Adviser and you can receive ongoing support with them if this is appropriate. We also have relationships with external services should you need further ongoing support or a supported referral to a specialist service.

We offer a counselling service that provides talking therapy and can help you on your personal journey to understanding your issues. These sessions are confidential and your information won’t be shared with any other services, except in the most exceptional of circumstances.

LGBTQIA+

Greater Manchester is a great place to be LGBTQI+. It is one of the gayest cities in the UK and even holds the largest Trans festival in the world, the Sparkle Weekend. Canal Street is where all things LGBTQI+ are centred, not just gay bars and restaurants but community facilities also have a presence there. The University participates in Manchester Pride each year and you are welcome to come and celebrate Pride with us.

If you are from a country where LGBTQI+ rights are not as good as in the UK, it can be hard to come out and meet people. But don't worry, we make it easy to do this. In askUS we have an LGBTQI+ Team that can advise you and help you meet people. Contact them at lgbt@salford.ac.uk

We also host the Salford Trans Forum which will meet regularly throughout the year and links you with other Trans and NonBinary students. The Student Union also have a LGBTQI+ Society which is another opportunity to meet people and socialise. The University is a long time Stonewall Champion and actively supports LGBTQI+ inclusion across the UK.

A month after I graduated from my course with a first-class degree, I got a job at Epigram as a junior graphic designer. I do animation and graphic design, working on a range of clients in the UK, Malaysia, USA, and Hong Kong.

My contacts at the University of Salford helped me get recommended for the role, and the company loved my work and thought I would be an excellent fit.

It was easy to get a Graduate Visa, and it only took a week to arrive.

MEET MEGHA

Hi Megha, what did you enjoy most about your course?

Without a doubt, my favourite thing about my course was the way it was taught. All my lecturers highly encouraged critical thinking and all our ideas were welcomed with so much respect. We were never addressed as students; we were seen as media psychologists and this made my journey of becoming one feel natural and effortless. We also had amazing labs and equipment which helped us see how things really work in our field. The course also featured multiple guest lecturers, all experts in their respective fields. We really got the best of it all!

How did you feel about being so far from home? How did you settle in?

I come from a very small town in Nepal. My experience of having to move to India at very young age to study helped me adjust to life in the UK. However, what helped me the most was the warm welcome I received from my lecturers. I was also lucky to be able to make friends straight away! The Student Support services at the University of Salford also went above and beyond to ensure that we were all feeling safe and comfortable at all times. I always felt at home at Salford. Maybe it was because everyone always wants to hold the door open for you, or the amount of intellectually stimulating conversations I had on campus.

What was your experience with the BBC like?

Right from the start, we had multiple guest lectures from the BBC team whose lectures were highly informative and interactive and gave us an insight into their work life at the BBC. We worked on various projects for them until one day we were told we could choose our dissertation based on some research areas they were interested in and present our findings to them.

My research topic was ‘Love in a Digital Age’. I never thought I would work on a research paper that would be relevant to the BBC! This was such an amazing journey!

What are you doing now that you have completed your course?

I am currently in the process of setting up my own company and I am looking at India and Nepal as primary locations. I also have plans to pursue a PhD and continue in academia.

Lastly, what was your favourite thing about living in Manchester?

Easy – Manchester United and match nights!

INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE, MEGHA RAHTI, FROM NEPAL, loved her course and, most of all, working on a research paper for the BBC!

74 ABOUT

What did you enjoy most about your course?

I definitely learned a lot during my studies at Salford. We had courses on enterprising our biotech products and building something for the consumer which would be helpful to them. During the entire course, I learnt about many useful and fascinating topics and interacted with different people, which really opened-up my view of the world around me!

What did you do after graduation?

I moved back to India and was successful in the bid to receive a grant of £10,000 from the Indian Government to prototype and develop an intolerance testing kit. Users of the kit will be able to detect foods that they are intolerant to and eliminate these foods from the diet in order to achieve a healthier lifestyle and fitness goals.

PIYUSH MEET CHUKS

What are your future plans?

Currently, we are developing the prototype and soon we will be applying for patents in the UK and Germany. The next big market for us is there. The UK will certainly be our next stop once we raise to the next round, as I am quite aware of the English market.

What was the best thing about your course?

The fact that the curriculum covered different aspects of public health. I also enjoyed the mentorship programme which enabled me to meet and work with lecturers with great experience in public health. Also, the lectures were designed to allow engagement with public health experts from different practice areas. This was a great networking opportunity!

Can you describe your career path after you graduated?

After graduating at Salford, I worked with Healthwatch Manchester in Public Health research, a role that involved

monitoring nutrition and physical activity of children and young people in a bid to reduce obesity.

I later worked as a consultant, leading a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded public health program, targeted at improving maternal, neonatal and child health outcomes for 13,500 women in Northern Nigeria.

I am now a Health Policy Analyst in Canada. I have led several projects including the development of the Suicide Prevention Framework, an opioid harm-reduction policy strategy, and design of the alcohol harm-reduction policy options.

PIYUSH BHANU GRADUATED WITH AN MSC IN BIOMEDICINE AND HAS NOW STARTED A COMPANY BACK IN INDIA, called Xome Life Sciences, that is developing food intolerance testing kits.
CHUKS ONWUNYI FROM NIGERIA GRADUATED WITH AN MSC IN PUBLIC HEALTH, and is now a Health Policy Analyst in Canada.MEET

MEET MUAZZAM

MUAZZAM DEEN CAME FROM NAIROBI IN KENYA TO SALFORD (THAT’S A DISTANCE OF 6,450 MILES!) TO STUDY BENG (HONS) AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING. He says this experience has moulded him into a different person and he has enjoyed every minute of it.

Why did you choose the University of Salford?

I chose Salford because it has state of the art facilities that are used to conduct experiments relative to the course along with a team of industry experienced lecturers. Salford is also ranked as one of the top universities offering a course in Aeronautical engineering.

What’s the best thing about the course?

It has truly made me appreciate and understand the amount of thinking and reasoning that is required to make aircraft the way they are. The way the theory is deduced and how it is applied in reality, is what astounds me the most.

What is the support like for international students?

askUS has been the go-to place. Services to any inquiries regarding finance, visa/immigration, faith services or even well-being and counselling are provided.

Everybody at Salford is friendly and polite. If you had any troubles or queries, everybody and anybody was ready to help at the campus.

MEET WENWEN

WENWEN WANG, AN MA DANCE PERFORMANCE AND PROFESSIONAL PRACTICES

GRADUATE, came to the UK to study after retiring from the national rhythmic gymnastics team of China from the University of Salford. Since then she has become a television star after appearing on China’s The Greatest Dancer!

Hi Wenwen, what experience and skills did you gain at the University of Salford?

I learnt to adapt to different dance styles, and I have become more open-minded and versatile after working with different amazing artists with their own uniqueness. I also had the amazing opportunity to join the Emergence Dance Company and work with internationally renowned choreographers and performers.

It must have been incredible performing on China’s ‘The Greatest Dancer’ primetime TV show – would say that is your career highlight so far?

That has been a memorable moment! It was amazing even though I had some difficulties. I had the shortest time to prepare a new choreography after being in lockdown due to Covid-19, plus I injured myself just before the

Whencompetition.asked

what is next in store for Wenwen, she said: I would love to dance professionally for the next couple of years, maybe even in Europe. Longer term, my goal is to have a studio one day so young dancers have the facilities to grow and learn. Teaching ballet and contemporary dance is also something I would definitely try.

Do you think your studies at Salford have prepared you for this?

Yes, definitely. I studied dance pedagogy at Salford, and I have also learnt some basic teaching knowledge, for example how to cope with student behaviour, class management and multiple teaching styles etc.

What advice would you give to students who are considering studying in the UK and specifically at the University of Salford

Be daring to try out new ideas, university is the best time to experiment new areas. Be social and make as many friends as possible!’

Wenwen also won the Dean’s Award at the School of Arts and Media’s Create Student Awards. The award is given to one student every year who has shown outstanding levels of devotion and commitment to their course, contributing to the outputs of the school and wider university, whilst working exceptionally hard to achieve their potential and beyond.

Salford’s Human Movement and Rehabilitation team works with industry across the globe to improve the lives of people with mobility problems. This ranges from people who have difficulty walking and rely on gait analysis to inform diagnosis and treatment, to the millions of workers who stand for long periods at work and suffer musculoskeletal pain and to the survivors of stroke, for whom regaining limb movement is key to their daily activities.

In addressing these issues, Salford’s research led to the first major update to clinical gait analysis methods in 40 years, impacting the work of 1,000 clinical laboratories worldwide, some 80% of the global sector; it challenged the occupational footwear sector’s focus on accident prevention, redirecting it toward footwear to protect musculoskeletal health, resulting in a new company, strategy and products (>60,000 sold); and it produced a patented rehabilitation technology that provides highquality physical therapy without the need for highly skilled staff, resulting in a spin-out company in China, investment of GBP2,000,000 and benefitting 1,350 patients in its first 18

TRANSFORMING PRODUCTS AND IMPROVING PRACTICE IN HUMAN MOVEMENT AND MAINSTREAMINGREHABILITATION URBAN AGRICULTURE: BRINGING THE BENEFITS OF FOOD GROWING TO CITIES

Urbanmonths.Agriculture,

the practice of cultivating and producing food in cities, is growing in importance in terms of sustainability. The practice offers substantial social, economic and environmental benefits for communities, such as job creation, improving mental health and greening neighbourhoods. However, there is a knowledge gap regarding sustainable models, models for upscaling and best practices to implement Urban Agriculture. Researchers at Salford have pioneered the implementation of upscaled Urban Agriculture, leading to creation of the largest urban farm in the UK and a wide range of other assets.

Our research has also highlighted the value of the concept in decision-making processes and supported policy change to enable wider-scale application of the practice. In doing so, we have directly enabled £2,500,000 in funding for the practice so far and secured Government commitment for a further £8,000,000 to mainstream the concept in the UK. Salford’s research has been instrumental in creating jobs, shaping environments, influencing policy and effecting behaviour change, which has enabled the Urban Agriculture concept to flourish at scale.

INFORMATION YOU SHOULD BE AWARE OF WHEN APPLYING TO STUDY WITH IMPORTANTUS.NOTICES

This prospectus gives you a broad overview of the types of courses and facilities we offer and all content is correct at the time of going to print (October 2020).

We print the prospectus as far in advance of the start of the academic year as possible, to give you an idea of what is available and plenty of time to consider your options. However, this means that changes to the prospectus content will inevitably arise. This prospectus is therefore not intended to provide a definitive statement of the courses and facilities available at the University of Salford. Before deciding to apply, please go to our website for the most up-to-date and detailed course information: salford.ac.uk Alternatively, contact us on +44 (0)161 295 4545 or enquiries@salford.ac.uk

As you would expect we have Privacy and Cookies Policies, which apply to the use of our website and which can be found at salford.ac.uk/privacy

We reserve the right to change the information about courses in this prospectus at any time. Reasons for such changes include, for example:

/ Our need to withdraw or change a course or module because we have insufficient student numbers or funding to run it viably or to give the appropriate educational experience.

/ We have to respond to unforeseen circumstances outside our control (such as requirements of any governmental, regulatory or professional bodies or the introduction of any new or modified laws or regulations)

/ We think the changes are desirable to improve or maintain quality or will enhance the student experience or be otherwise beneficial to students

We will give students and applicants who have accepted offers as much notice as possible of any withdrawals of, or significant changes to, courses or modules and will take all reasonable steps to minimise any disruption. Students who are adversely affected by any significant change which was not foreseeable will have the right to switch courses or, in the absence of any suitable alternative, to leave the University and transfer to another provider. Changes during studies should only happen in very exceptional circumstances. Where they do happen, we will, as far as we are able, assist students with the practicalities of switching.

We make every effort to ensure that all changes we make to courses and facilities are detailed on our website as soon as is reasonably practical. In the event of any inconsistencies between information in this prospectus and on the website, information held on the website will prevail.

Some courses may have additional fees associated with them, for example for specific materials or field trips. We won’t know the exact amount of these additional fees until closer to the time that they are required. Where appropriate, we have therefore provided an indication of the additional fees required based on costs available at the time of going to print (October 2020). Please keep checking our website for the most up-to-date and detailed information: salford.ac.uk

We make every effort to assist students in finding placements where they are a requirement of their courses. However, employers have a limited number of placements available and we cannot guarantee that students will have access to the placement of their choice. Students who wish to undertake placements as an optional part of their course are responsible for finding them, but support will be provided (the course information in this prospectus directs you to the applicable course web page where you can find more detail).

At the University of Salford, we are proudly committed to being inclusive. We cherish the diversity of our students, staff and community and above all being fair in all that we do. All of us, staff and students alike, are responsible for ensuring we are actively creating and maintaining a positive and inclusive environment. This includes any person or organisation that is directly associated to the University making public statements that are hateful, discriminatory or promote inequality.

As a university we fully encourage freedom of expression, but exercising our freedom needs to be done in a respectful way. We will aim to protect our students and staff from being exposed to views and behaviours that are not respectful and inclusive. We distinguish from this our academic collections and related systems which may contain materials that were historically deemed to be suitable for publication but today are considered discriminatory or offensive. These materials are, however, essential for academic study and research. We will treat colleagues fairly, equitably and with dignity based on their individual needs and the requirements of our Fororganisation.furtherdetails please visit: salford.ac.uk/equality-and-diversity
