INTRODUCTION FROM OUR MARSHALL:PROFESSORVICE-CHANCELLOR,HELEN

Whilst the past two years have been a time of vast transformation for both us here at Salford, and globally, our ethos of transforming lives, stimulating discovery, and realizing potential has endured. Our commitment to improving social mobility for young people was recognized this year when the Higher Education Policy Institute’s Social Mobility Index ranked Salford at number six in England and number one in the Northwest, up eight places from the previous year. We are committed to providing students with an education which gives them hands-on experiences that will set them up for life. I am proud that the University of Salford remains at the cutting-edge of world-leading research, innovation and teaching, working to secure a better future for generations to Withcome.this said, if we are to mitigate the damaging effects of the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis on both our current and prospective students, then the further growth of our scholarships and bursaries programme must be ensured. We remain ever grateful for the sustained and loyal support of our current donors and friends and look forward to cultivating new relationships. The power of a scholarship is truly immeasurable, and we are determined to provide opportunities for our students to thrive and achieve, regardless of their social or economic background.

The University and the City of Salford will undergo a radical transformation over the next 10 years as part of the Crescent Masterplan, transforming facilities, future-proofing skills, and building more innovative partnerships. We will be recognised as a global leader of challenge-led research and solutionsfocused enterprise, delivering responsible innovation for economic, environmental, and social impact.

The University of Salford

We are deeply rooted in our industrial heritage. For over 120 years, the University has responded to industry needs by providing technical training and academic and research provision in the heart of Salford. We know that the world is continually changing, and it is our duty to build a diverse, confident, and resilient workforce that responds to industry needs.

The University of Salford’s ground-breaking industry partnerships and outstanding relationships with individuals stimulates learning and propels each student to realise their academic and personal potential. We raise achievement for all our students and provide a level playing field, regardless of background. We know that one of the biggest barriers to a student accessing university is finance. The enduring impact of the pandemic and the current cost-of-living crisis is decimating opportunities for the communities on our doorstep; including young people from low-income households, which represent 40% of our student body.

The demand for scholarship and bursarial support is needed now more than ever. Education is, arguably, the most important pillar for improving social mobility. We know that talent exists everywhere in our city and we want to work with you to support and nurture that talent. University is a lifeline, giving students the cutting edge in a highly competitive job market. However, without the additional finance beyond a maintenance loan, some of our talented students will struggle to pay for rent, bills, food, and other expenses, especially as the cost of living continues to rise. In the face of financial deprivation, a university education is often the first thing to go for those most in need. In this case, a scholarship can make all the difference. We have the capability to use our scholarship programmes to attract and recruit talent across a range of industries, particularly where there is a distinct shortage. We can align your affinity to a cause or subject, such as women in STEM, hardship, or employability, and can reach out to a diverse profile of students to match your interest with the greatest need across our student body. A scholarship can be the catalyst for a student to realise their potential. Your support can change a student’s life.

WE NEED YOUR HELP SO THAT TALENTED STUDENTS DON’T GET LEFT BEHIND For our industry partners, scholarships often align with CSR / ESG priorities and help to build a diverse and inclusive pipeline of talent within your sector. By funding a scholarship, you are supporting a student throughout their university experience, and this can: Ease financial pressures that prevent a student from going to university and reduce the risk of them withdrawing from their studies whilst here Finance necessary, quality equipment required for studies Enable a student to cut down on part-time work and use the time to embrace extra-curricular opportunities to further their studies and interests, often inaccessible to low-income students due to financial pressures Build a student’s confidence and develop other important skills such as communication and resilience Provide connections to real-world careers for students via live briefs, placements, and mentoring, which donors can choose to embed within a Buildscholarshipatalented pool of employees Drive recruitment into industries that have a clear skills gap Create future leaders that are work ready The University of Salford Page | 5

“I originally come from Iran, but I arrived in the UK in 2011. I completed my A-Levels in 2015 but, due to the conditions of my asylum status, I was not able to embark on my undergraduate studies until 2019. Despite all the challenges during this academic year, the Scholarship has been of huge financial aid in completing my studies. Rather than worrying about monthly tuition instalments, the Scholarship has allowed me to stay focused on my studies, which has been the main contributor of my performance over the year.”

SALFORD SCHOLARSHIPS: THE IMPACT

“I was lucky enough to win a scholarship to Salford over 30 years ago, without which I would not have been able to attend University. Now being able to help students from similar backgrounds as myself and give them the same chance I got, is one of the most rewarding things possible.” Anonymous Donor of the JS Engineering Scholarship In the academic year 2021-22, with the support of our industry partners, alumni, and charitable trusts and foundations, we were able to support 83 students through scholarships and bursaries. Yet, despite this, our scholarship fund remains unable to meet demand and for every successful applicant, another equally deserving student is turned away.

“When I found out that I’d been awarded the scholarship, I was so grateful. For a group of people to say, ‘We trust you enough to create something worthwhile,’ is so motivating, as it’s knowing that people find something good about your work and want to champion you to grow and develop as an artist. I would like to say thank you to the donors that have made the scholarship possible. I hope you realise the huge impact you’re having on students’ lives; by investing in us, you are giving us the confidence, opportunity, and time to give us a chance at achieving our dreams.”

“One of my major challenges growing up was not listening to harsh comments and focusing on my grades; I would do my homework alone, without any parental help, as my parents are from a minority background and never received an education. When starting at Salford, it was a new slate, a place to learn without the judgement of my background. Words cannot express how grateful I am for the financial support in aiding me to become the best Construction Project Manager I can aspire to be.”
