Bobby’s Danceathon by Kristina Nguyen

Bobby’s Danceathon was a fundraiser run by the LVYP Kiwanis that we got the opportunity to volunteer at! It was a lot of fun helping out LVYP Kiwanis with this event, especially when the event started. They started off doing warm-up dances (which were actually really tiring LOL) with choreographers showing participants and volunteer cheerleaders what to do. Then, it shifted towards everyone just vibing, having a good time, and basically dancing!! We even got a chance to hit the dance floor ourselves! You can tell that everybody who attended had an amazing time at the event. And, the best part: LVYP Kiwanis reached their fundraising and raised over $2000 towards Mothers Against Drunk Driving! YAY!! Bobby’s Danceathon was definitely one for the books, especially when we got to spend some time with the LVYP Kiwanians.

Baby’s Bounty Diaper Drive by Joanieve Cooper Volunteering for Baby’s Bounty was super enjoyable! This is the first volunteering event held in Henderson that I’ve known about/gone to. It was really close to my house and I was able to walk to the event. It was really nice to volunteer around closer to where I live. Serving your community in such a close proximity allows you to see all the behind the scenes work that goes on around your own community that you personally wouldn’t think about. The impact is so big to many members of your community so I think keeping in touch with the needs of your community is really eye-opening to the problems surrounding your community. The event was very fast paced but made the hours go by super fast. We served so many families, I assume around 300-500. We also got to see some of the kids, so cute!

Big & Little Reveal

Reveal this year was so special and fun! I was so excited to meet my little to-be. Seeing the littles get super curious during Clue Week helped build up a lot of excitement. It also built up a lot of nervousness too while trying to dodge all of the questions from littles trying to get hints out of us, but it was fun nevertheless. Seeing the pure happiness on the faces of everyone on reveal night was really heartwarming. Getting to watch my family grow and see how well everyone clicked was the cherry on top. Maricela did an amazing job on all of the pairings and reveal this year.

The big and little reveal was something I’d never thought I’d be a part of, yet I’m glad it ultimately ended up happening to me. While it may sound dramatic, I was nervous before the reveal, but despite this, I’m thankful not only for the experience but for the family I was able to gain and feel a part of. While I am still growing closer to others, I cannot deny that having them there, knowing we all have each other, has made me a happier person, and I am grateful for the people who encouraged me to join. What once seemed scary, or perhaps simply confusing, being in college now is less daunting, knowing I have people who care for me, including my very own big Samia!

RTC by Marie Mohen

My favorite service event I have participated in this year was RTC (Regional Training Conference). The conference lasts all day with a call time of 6:30 A.M., and clean-up wrapping up around 8:30 P.M. As you can imagine, there is an abundant amount of time and opportunities for team bonding in that 14-hour time frame. My friends and I carpooled to the event together, and stopped for a much-needed coffee along the way to kick-off our day on a high-note. Everyone from Circle K arrived early adorned in UNLV red t-shirts. We spent the day overseeing the keyclubbers as they enjoyed the activities of the event. We rotated between positions at registration, dress-code, lunch set-up, water distribution, among other tasks. It was definitely entertaining cheering on the key-clubbers as they prepared their themes and chants, and competed for the spirit stick. It was a fun-day full of music, story-telling, team-bonding, and various other silly shenanigans. While we did have our fun along the way, we did not take our responsibilities as role-models in the space lightly. Throughout the event, we maintained SafeKey and prioritized a safe environment for the minors the event was designed for. On the way home, we stopped for ramen and froyo to celebrate our accomplishments. All in all, it was a great time!
