FROM THE DIRECTOR ’S DESK

Let us start by congratulating the 2023 graduates, and all those who completed another semester! Felicidades to all of you who accomplished the goals you set out for yourself, whether it was to walk across the stage with a degree or certificate or to gain new skills. YOUR college library staff have been incredibly impressed with the level of dedication we have seen in our students this past academic year. We hope that YOUR library provided the services, resources, and expertise to help you on your academic journey.
In addition to our usual services, the library regularly offers programming to support our campus community and the community at large in their pursuit of knowledge, creativity, and lifelong learning. Here's a roundup of YOUR library's most recent programs:
• May 9: YOUR library hosted the UNM-Taos Massage program who had students, staff and faculty waiting in line for free chair massages to help de-stress during finals week. A win-win program that provided hands-on experience for the massage students and much needed relief for the campus community.
• May 6: In celebration of Dia de los Niños/Dia de los Libros, Kayla Platoff and myself conducted a storytime for preschoolers with two teachers from our Kid’s Campus, Maria Carmine Martinez and Dorotea Trujillo, at the Harwood Museum. This is in conjunction with the Harwood Museum’s Centennial programming to bring attention to arts, culture and literacy in our community. The books used were based on art, artists and music.
• May 5: YOUR library hosted a book talk/book signing for Drs. Jose Rivera and Enrique Lamadrid for their newest book on acequias entitled "Water for the People: The Acequia Heritage of New Mexico in a Global Context". There was a panel discussion, PowerPoint presentation, book sales and book signing by the authors. This was a great success with over 100 in attendance and participation from SOMOS, Op. Cit books, Taos Valley Acequia Association, KCEI Cultural Energy radio, and UNM-Taos Kid’s Campus.
• April 24: Kayla and Kathleen presented a storytime in YOUR college library with the Kid's Campus Pre-K students in honor of Dia de los Niños/Dia de los Libros. We worked on a water theme with the teachers and the children created images of water, rivers, acequias, etc. The preschool students did an amazing acequia diorama and their artwork was displayed at the May 5th “Water for the People” program.
• April 17: In honor of Poetry Month, YOUR college library held a very successful Poetry Slam. In consultation with Anne MacNaughton, co-founder of the original Poetry Circus, we were able to hold our first Poetry Slam with 12 poets competing. The program brought new community members to our campus as well as a mix of students, staff and faculty.
