DEVELOPMENT BRIEF & OBJECTIVES
Briefing On this project we have been proposed to do a new space inside a real space in Barcelona. We have been completely free to choose what type of space do we want to design, where will be it placed and wich will be the public of this space. After thinking on different options, we have decided to create a space for mothers and childs aged between one and six months. It will be also directed to future mothers. For doing our project we have chosen an existing bar situated in Capitán Arenas street, near to Diagonal and Maria Cristina. We chose this place because it’s in a very interesting area for us. It’s near places like offices, flats and houses, schools...We think it’s a very good area for doing a project like this.
The space will be divided into two levels. At the lower level we’ll distinguish two main areas. The first one is bound to the entertainment and the other in storage. The playground will be a spacious area which carry out various activities, such as exercises to strengthen relationships between mother and child, pre-exercise childbirth, make conferences, and relax. We want to create a warm space. It will be wood floored and some areas will be padded, softer, for activities that are usually performed on the floor.
We want this space to be a place where women can go to escape from routine and relax at the same time they can learn interesting facts about mother-

hood, foster relationships with the babies and share experiences. A place where they can enjoy the company of other moms with the same position (mothers with infants), pregnant women and mothers with experience.
cles intended to help in didactive activities. We will devote an area where mothers can leave their baby objects (either clothes, toys...) that no longer are going well, for other mothers who needs it. This problem has arisen that the objects for babies fall away useless because babies grow very fast. At the entrance of the space, we want to create a small area to leave buggies for newborns. On the second level, there will be the bar area. In this area women will be able to meet other mothers, talk and share experiences, quietly taking snacks. We want to create an organic form for the tables, creating a large area furniture where all can gather around. This way we think that they will be related each other easely. So we want to break the conventional idea of bar and create a space set aside for activities appropriate to the project.

BRIEF & OBJECTIVES
Mudboard This is the mudboard we made at the beggining of this project. In it we wanted to reflect visually what were our aims for developing the space. We can see how our principal objective was the creation of a space for women who wants to disconnect. Other main objectives were the creation of a good and warm enviroment, focus part of our work on ergonomics and develope a multifunctional space in where women can do a lot of different activities.

Sketches
Sketching has been one of our powerfull tools at the time of thinking and designing the space. It has been not only a resource to express
what we have in mind. It has been our best comunication tool to explain things with each other. Looking at all our sketches we can see how we
have finally developed our first ideas and compare it with what they have become.

DEVELOPMENT
Ergonomic considerations For the correct realization of this project, we have considered a serial of ergonomic criteria for furniture design and its correct collocation in the space. We have search information about ergonomic rules to solve the different situations we have into our space. As we do differents types of activities in the local, we had to consider many different criteria. On the ground floor we find the interaction zone between mothers and babys, as well as the babybugg park zone. This zone is not only dedicated to the interaction between our users. It is also used for doing conferences and talks. For this reason we need many elements in the space. We have designed a furniture for saving all this objects, wich is built in one of the walls. This furniture is necessary for saving the pads used by the mothers and their childs to interact with each other. We also store there the folding chairs that we use for the conferences. For designing this furniture we have
considered diferent aspects like the mesure of the folding chairs or the pads. The size of a folded chair is 42/47x4,5/7x89cm (width x thickness x height). The size of the pads is 175x80cm, 50cm on the thickest part. For this design and the design of the shelves in the first floor, we have considered some mesures. The first one is the maximum height for a shelve, 160cm. The second one is minimum height, 55cm. The recomended distance is about 75cm minimum and 140 maximum. The top heigh reaching the end of the closet or shelve is 140cm. For the designing of the first floor we have considered a lot of ergonomic rules, due to the presence of a bar in that floor. The first point are the stairs. We have to include banisters because our stairs are less than 120cm width. The most important point of this space is the remaining space in the walkways and the eat places. It has been necessary to leave 1m and the corridor because it is the minimum distance in an emergency way. The

interior ways inside the bar zone needs a minimum space of 80cm, and the doors 90cm. The minimum width for a barman on the working corridors must have between 90 and 120cm. We also have to spend about 10-15% of the bar spaceto make the kitchen and the employees zone. To all this points, we have added those relating to the necessary distances to seat and eat on the bar. We have left a minimum of 75cm to each person for eating, wich is the necessary mesure they needed around to eat. In the case of the main corridors, we have left 1m, and when it coincides with the workers zone 1,5m. The tables have an area of 0,57 square meters, with a radius of 42,5cm. Considering that the total width of the table is 255cm, each table can accomodate around 8 people eating. The height of the table is 83cm. Moreover, the bar bar is 120cm height, and the table in the nursery is 45cm, recommended height for childrens aged between 3 and 5 years.
DEVELOPMENT
Lighting One of the most important points in our space is light. Due to the amount and size of our windows, we have a lot of natural lighting. We think that this is very good for our space, because we believe that natural lighting is the best way to illuminate it. There are not any building that could cover the sundlight, so as long as there is sun our space will have a very good lighting.
We want to keep the present local lighting, changing his original places. We think the actual lighting it’s the right one for the type of local we are developing. For tables, bar and storage areas we use direct lighting, and for the area of educational activities and games for the older children, we use diffused light. In both cases, it give a warm
light in the space. The intention of using this lighting is to create a confortable and pleasant space, in wich our users can feel like home. We have to remain that the main conpcet of our space is disconection, and we think that that’s impossible without a good lighthing. It’s also important to remeber that lighting is one of the points that define the ergonomy of a space.

Materials Basically we only find two type of materials into our space: metal and wood. We have chosen diferent types of metal and wood for each specific necessitie, but always looking for maintain the same feel about it. We want a warm and confortable space, so the use of correct materials is very important for us. The structure of the elevator and stairs banisters are of a metal grid lattice. It allows light to pass through the openings made by the material. Beech wood is used for the floor covering. This wood is light colored, straight grained and semi hard. It has
14
much strength, so it is good for soil. The furniture is made from ash wood, light color is yellow or gray depending on the place where it is extracted. This type of wood has many irregularities. We have chosen this type of wood to give a more natural feel to the space. It’s very important for us that it looks natural to match better with the organic forms of our tables. We think that this types of material are very helpful to create a warm sensation and make you feel more confortable with the place. This wood is shockproof and is easy to bend to steam, so it’s perfect for being applied as bar table.
The supports of the tables are made of titanium. Its color can chang depending of the manufacturing. This color changing will also provide a more natural look to the space. Another important material in our space is glass. We have a lot of glass inside it. The space has big windows in both floors, and we also have used glass to make the walls of the nursery. We have decided to do it this way because it’s a good material for sound isolating and at the same time mothers can see their children from the outside of the nusery. Using glass we also provide natural light to the nursery.

Space Colors The colors of the space can be divided into two categories. The first one is the own colors of the space materials, and the second one the colors derivated from graphic applications. This ones have been chosen as identifiers of the spaces. We want to make each space associable to each color.
Furthermore, the bar chairs are also red. Meanwhile, the color chosen to identify the nursery is green. We have applied it directly on to the glass and we have make an application for the nursery furniture. On the first floor we have applied blue on the furniture and on the ground.
We found the red in the bar area, in the banister protectors and with a graphic application on the wall.
The walls are an ivory white color, very neutral. Our intention was not to minimize the other colors, which
are more significant. We also find a different shade of light brown, on the wood flooring and the furniture (tables, shelves...) Finally we have metalic colors coming from the different structures and materials that suport the furniture and other elements.

Movement flows We distinguish three different flows. The red flow is for staff working in the space. In blue, we see the flow of babybuggies. We can see where is located their park site. The babybuggies don’t make any movement
in the space apart from going to the park place. Finally in green, we see the movement of users, moving all over the place. It has been very important to understand where will everybody move to design correctly the space
and collocate the furniture. We considered the space necessary for every type of person who is in the space to develope correctly their activities.

Sketching has been very important in the process of creation of the logo. We have made a lot of tests before reaching the final logo. From the
begining we have focused into looking for an organic form that works for the bar tables and for the logo. This are some of the tests we have
made. In this drawings is visible the diferent paths we follow until reach the final logo.
