Bohdan Zachary T
his month is a mix of celebration and reflection on Milwaukee PBS. Close to home, we’re celebrating the students of Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), as we broadcast the MATC 2021 spring graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 15, featuring keynote speaker Dasha Kelly Hamilton, Wisconsin’s poet laureate and one of the amazing presenters from the BLACK NOUVEAU special “Understanding Implicit Bias.” And MATC Television and Video Production students take over Channel 36 on Saturday, May 8, for the annual broadcast of their innovative student productions. May is also a time to honor those who bravely fought and died for our freedom. Over the years, Milwaukee PBS has taken great pride in sharing THE NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT and that tradition continues this year. Please tune in Sunday, May 30 at 7 pm on Channel 10 for a powerful performance on this day of remembrance. And May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Milwaukee PBS is celebrating the rich, significant contributions of this community with programs including AMY TAN: UNINTENDED MEMOIR on AMERICAN MASTERS, THE DONUT KING on INDEPENDENT LENS, the documentary anthology series PACIFIC HEARTBEAT and a rebroadcast of last year’s powerful five-part series, ASIAN AMERICANS.
NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT Tune in to the 32nd annual broadcast of America’s national night of remembrance. This multi awardwinning television event honors the military service and sacrifice of all our men and women in uniform, their families and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. 5/30, 7 pm 10HD Courtesy of Capitol Concerts
This month also sees the premiere of a new series from Fred Rogers Productions—DONKEY HODIE. This new children’s program explores yet another corner of the beloved MISTER ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD universe. More information can be found on page 3 of this issue. Your generous support is allowing for another powerful month of programming for our community on Milwaukee PBS. As always, thank you so much for all you do to keep public television vibrant in Milwaukee and across southeastern Wisconsin. Sincerely, Vice President & General Manager, Milwaukee PBS

Fred Rogers Productions Premieres Donkey Hodie on May 3 DONKEY HODIE is a new puppet television series for children ages 3 to 5 from Fred Rogers Productions and Spiffy Pictures. The new program premieres on Milwaukee PBS 10.1 at 9 am and 12:30 pm and on Milwaukee PBS KIDS 10.3 at 3 pm on May 3. DONKEY HODIE is the granddaughter of the original Donkey Hodie character from MISTER ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD. Every episode is set in the land of Someplace Else and follows Donkey Hodie and her pals – Purple Panda, Duck Duck and Bob Dog – as they follow their big dreams and work together to come up with creative solutions to everyday problems. Kids will learn about perseverance, resilience and problem-solving, while enjoying lots of fun along the way.
This new program will feature original music along with reimagined versions of Fred’s iconic songs to reinforce each story’s positive message.
To make room for the new program, some of Milwaukee PBS’s children’s programs will move to the weekend for the summer. Visit milwaukeepbs. org/schedule for more details.
On the LOCAL SCENE MATC STUDENT OPS TAKEOVER DAY – On May 8, MATC Television and Video Production students will broadcast original content on Milwaukee PBS 36.1. Learn more in related article on page 27. 10THIRTYSIX™, ADELANTE AND BLACK NOUVEAU – Milwaukee PBS’s public affairs programs continue to tell your story through their detailed look at what’s happening and impacting our community. Follow these stories on the Milwaukee PBS website, social media platforms and on-air. Check listings for details. AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN MCGIVERN™ – Are you planning your next vacation? This month, visit some places that might be perfect for you, including Fond du Lac, Fort Atkinson, Lake Mills and Milwaukee’s Avenues West. OUTDOOR WISCONSIN – Host Dan Small looks back in the archives at some cute foxes and Judy Nugent goes on a pheasant hunt. Dan fishes for Lake Michigan trout and salmon. And you’ll meet young ski jumpers who take flight using plastic runs at Tri-Norse Ski Club in Adams County.

Volunteer Spotlight
Michael Boerschinger: Appraiser (Pop Culture), Milwaukee PBS Appraisal Fair
M
ike Boerschinger is a Wisconsin-licensed auctioneer and the owner of the Sell It Now store, a Wisconsin licensed auction house. An avid collector, appraiser and college professor, this is his world and his passion. In his work, Mike has encountered fascinating artifacts with unbelievable value; however, what he remembers most are the people he helped and their stories. What made you start volunteering for the Milwaukee PBS Appraisal Fair? The mission of Milwaukee PBS fits well into what I do and my desire to give back to the community. For all of us who volunteer for the event, I think it's about letting people know what a fair value is for an item. Maybe they just want to know the value or maybe they want to sell it down the road. Letting them know up front that something has value helps them make an educated decision on what they do next. What motivates you to stay involved? The surprise of what’s coming next. Also, wanting to help. For example, we had the secretary of WOKY, the station that hosted The Beatles coming to Milwaukee back in 1964, and she “babysat” The Beatles for the weekend. They filled a coloring book with tons of notes to her, funny little poems, stories about all four of The Beatles. That piece at auction today would probably bring somewhere around a quarter of a million dollars. The daughters of the owner brought the item in a backpack, they had no idea of the value. That was one of the best items we have ever seen and it was helpful letting them know they needed to keep that in the safe deposit box. I just couldn't believe my eyes—you know you'll never see another one like that. So, just helping people like that is key. What might someone be surprised to know about you? That I'm a workaholic and my passion for teaching college. As a full-time college professor, I teach information technology and business courses. My passion for teaching equals my passion for collectibles. I have been collecting and buying
items since I was kid. Going to rummage sales, buying things, using my wagon to get them back home and then setting up at my neighbor's rummage sale—selling items as a 7-yearold and making as much as the adults selling those items. So, it's been a passion, it's been a constant in my life as long as I can remember. Any final tips? We always tell people it's funny that most items that were made to be collectible aren’t, but items that were never made to be often are. Also, many people think that if something is old, it must be worth money. Age has little to do with collectability; something new could still be very collectible. So, it's good to have a reputable set of eyes—no matter who it is—look at an item. One last thing. Take a look through your attic, basement or garage. If you find items that seem collectible and have any questions at all, you're welcome to bring them to the appraisal event or give me a call and I’ll be very happy to let you know what they might be worth on the market.

MATC TV/Video Production Students “Take Over” Milwaukee PBS 36.1 on May 8 Each year, MATC Television and Video Production students “take over” Milwaukee PBS 36.1 for a day. On May 8 starting at 10am, students will begin broadcasting more than 14 hours of original student-produced content. There will be a mix of recorded and live content throughout the day. Shows this year include Milwaukee’s Most Haunted, Brewaukee, Bee Kind and Honorbound, just to name a few. Students have assumed professional roles for this project, such as general manager, promotions, writer, producer, videographer, editor and other roles found in the media industry. The student team works together to produce new content, schedule it for air and organize four hours of live studio broadcasting. The Television and Video Production program is just one example of the critical hands-on aspect of what MATC students learn. Many programs allow for professional experience that makes a big difference when starting a career. Other hands-on educational programs include culinary arts, early childhood education, dental hygiene and automotive technology. Visit matc.edu to learn about all of the pathways to cost-effective education. For program specifics on the MATC Student Operations Day schedule, visit milwaukeepbs.org/schedule.
