Mr. Peter Cotton, National Practice Director, Mirvac Design
Peter graduated from UNSW Built Environment in 1984 with a Bachelor of Architecture (Honours First Class). He is currently the National Practice Director for Mirvac Design, which provides design and delivery services within Mirvac’s integrated development delivery team.

Peter joined Mirvac Design (then known as HPA), the architectural division of Mirvac, in 1989 and was appointed a Director of HPA in 1994.
He was the Design Director for Newington, the Olympic Village, from the bid phase in 1996 to its completion in 2000. This role required the co-ordination of the design work of a number of Australia’s leading architects to incorporate the requirements of an Olympic Village, environmental issues and the commercial reality of the residential marketplace, within a very tight program. Peter was then appointed National Practice Director in 2007 is responsible for overseeing the design outputs for Mirvac projects on a national basis.

2013 Undergraduate Scholars List

The Built Environment Undergraduate Scholars’ Program was established as a means of acknowledging the Faculty’s highest achieving students. Every year a group of 20 students are identified based on their excellent academic performance. Successful students become a ‘Built Environment Scholar’, a title that has a year long duration and sees individuals receive recognition from their peers, the Built Environment community and industry professionals. Scholars also receive a $500 cheque and $100 book voucher.

The Research Link Grant Scheme provides an opportunity for students to gain insight into research practice while developing research skills that will enhance future learning opportunities. Built Environment aims to promote and develop a research culture and the Research Link Grant Scheme, linking students to an experienced academic, is one aspect of the opportunities provided by the Faculty. Architectural Studies, Architectural Computing and Master of Architecture Andrew Taylor Memorial Prize Established by the Taylor family, this prize is given in memory of Andrew Taylor, a student in the Bachelor of Architecture program. Andrew was awarded the Board of Architects Prize for Year 2, 2001, and through his studio design work had expressed an interest in the Australian landscape.
The Belinda Brito Prize for Creativity & Passion in Design This Prize was established by the family, friends and colleagues of Belinda Brito whose 15 year association with the Faculty began as an architecture student in 1991. It recognises Belinda’s contribution to excellence in architectural design teaching and her own passionate belief in the rigorous exploration of design strategies.
The Castle Mountain Prize Outdoor Adventure Camps (Castle Mountain Pty Ltd) began operation in 1972 as a unique camp venue for schools, cadets and community groups. Built Environment’s Architecture program has often chosen Outdoor Adventure Camps as the venue for its design studios and many students have stayed at Outdoor Adventure Camps completing projects in architecture and building construction.
Concrete Masonry Association of Australia (CMAA) Prize The CMAA is a national organisation representing the concrete masonry industry on national issues. Technical marketing areas is the primary focus of CMAA’s strategic objectives.
Eric Daniels Prize in Residential Design Eric Daniels was appointed a lecturer in architecture in 1951 and retired as Emeritus Professor in 1985. He was appointed Professor of Architecture and Head of the School of Architecture in 1980 and Dean of the Faculty in 1984. This Prize continues in perpetuity the work to which Eric Daniels devoted so much of his academic life—the striving for excellence in architectural design.
The Frank Fox Memorial Prize Frank Fox was the founder of Old Sydney Town, a re-creation of Sydney as it was before the days of Governor Macquarie. Frank Fox then funded all first year Architecture students to camp at Old Sydney Town and construct the buildings. Staff and students alike learned early techniques such as thatching, earth flooring, bark roofing, log walling, wattleanddaub as well as bricklaying and roof tiling.
The Frank W Peplow Prize Frank Peplow (1876–1952) was first apprenticed in Sydney to architect Arthur Blacket, son of the famous architect Edmund Blacket. His practice was responsible for many church buildings as well as a wide range of commercial and factory projects. Mrs. W.M Peplow, was instrumental in establishing this Prize in his memory.
The J M Freeland Prize Emeritus Professor John Maxwell (Max) Freeland AM (1920–1983) air force officer and Professor of Architecture, joined the staff of UNSW’s then Faculty of Architecture in 1957 and was appointed Chair of Architecture in 1960. This Prize was established in his memory by his colleagues and former students
Jim Plume Prize for Outstanding Innovation in the Application of Digital Technology in the Built Environment The Faculty’s first prize in digital technology was established by recently retired Honorary Senior Lecturer, Jim Plume. Jim joined the Faculty at UNSW in 1981 as a lecturer specialising in computing in architecture. Jim exercised active leadership in the Faculty over that time, establishing much of the IT curriculum and resources. From 2006 to March 2010, he served as Head of School.
The Margot and Neville Gruzman Award for Urban Design in Master of Architecture Year 1 & 2 Adjunct Professor Neville Gruzman AM (1925–2005) was an Australian architect. His works are varied forms of Modernism, known as Organic Modernism, and also Regionalism. Neville Gruzman began teaching at UNSW in the 1960s and employed and taught some notable Sydney architects including Pritzker Prize winner alumnus Professor Glenn Murcutt AO.
The Morton Herman Memorial Prize Morton Earle Herman (1907–1983), architect, architectural historian and architectural conservationist, lectured primarily in architectural history from 1945 until the late 1960s. His contribution was recognized by the nation when he received an OAM in 1979 being referred to as the “father of architectural history and conservation in this country”. This Prize was established at the instigation of architect and faculty Advisory Council Member Adjunct Professor Philip Cox AO.
One Bligh Street Prize—Master of Architecture Final Year Prize in Sustainable Highrise Architecture Awarded for the first time at this ceremony, this prize was established in honour of office tower block 1 Bligh Street, designed by Arhitectus + Ingenhoven Architects. 1 Bligh Street won the 2012 International High Rise Award and the winning group—Architectus + Ingenhoven, Cbus Property and DEXUS Property Group— donated the Award monies to UNSW.

Construction Management and Property The Australian Institute of Building (AIB) Awards Founded in 1951, AIB brings individuals together who share a common interest in improving the standing of the building profession.
Australian Property Institute (API) Prizes API’s primary role is to set and maintain the highest standards of professional practice, education, ethics and professional conduct for its members and the broader property profession.
The Brookfield Multiplex Construction Prize Brookfield Multiplex is a leading global contracting and development company. Brookfield Multiplex has a long-standing association with UNSW and is committed to the support and development of its students, research and education as a whole.
The RICS Building Construction Management Prize The RICS has three main roles within the property sector: to maintain the highest standards of education and training; to protect consumers through strict regulation of ethics and standards; and to advise organisations, such as governments and regional boards.
Industrial Design Caroma Ergonomics Award for Bathroom Design Awarded for the first time at this ceremony, this prize recognises the best student group in the Inclusive Design project. Caroma GWA has a long-standing relationship with Built Environment that is based on research and student support.
Interior Architecture The Davenport Campbell Prize Davenport Campbell provides a wide range of property and construction related services throughout Asia and the Middle East.
Insight Project Prize in Interior Architecture The Insight Projects Prize is supported by Built Environment Alumnus and Director of Insight Projects, Matt Sanders. Matt Sanders also supports an award in Construction Management and is a long standing supporter of UNSW Sport & Recreation.
The Mary Broinowski Prize for Interior Architecture Mary Broinowski (1911–1969) studied Interior Design at the Melbourne Institute of Technology in the late 1940s. This prize was established by Mary’s friends and family, Dr Susan Broinowski Ballinger and Emeritus Professor John Ballinger.
The Mirvac Design Prize in Interior Architecture Mirvac Design is a diverse practice specialising in architecture, urban design, interior design, landscape architecture and graphic design and is the fully owned architecture and design subsidiary of Mirvac, one of Australia’s leading companies.
The Thames Hudson Australia Prize in Interior Architecture Thames & Hudson was founded in 1949 by Walter and Eva Neurath. Their passion and mission for Thames & Hudson was that its books should reveal the world of art, to create a ‘museum without walls’ and to make accessible the research and the findings of top scholars and academics.
The Design Institute of Australia (DIA) Professional Encouragement Prize Established by the DIA (the peak professional membership body for designers and design businesses) this prize is membership to the DIA providing support, networking, services and information to its newly graduated recipient.
The Interior Architecture Draftex Excellence in Communications First Year Prize Awarded for the first time at this ceremony, this prize was initiated by Draftex to recognise excellence. Draftex provides a range of products for the creation, reproduction, presentation and filing of technical drawings and illustrations.
The Taste Living Interior Prizes The Taste Living prizes are supported by the ‘Taste—European design for all’ Australian company. The company proudly supports the teaching of interior architecture at UNSW and its prizes recognise design excellence in students. Taste is also providing opportunities for students to meet designers visiting from Europe and providing introductions to its design profession colleagues.
Landscape Architecture Australian Native Landscapes (ANL) Prize in Landscape Technology ANL is a major landscape contractor and frequently collaborates with the UNSW landscape architecture discipline.
Harry Howard Prize in Landscape Architecture Harry Stanton Howard (1930–2000) was trained in architecture and town planning and became a founding member of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects. He was a key member of the Sydney Bush School of landscape architects who were most influential between 1965 and 1985. This prize was created by his colleagues, family and friends.

The Lindsay Robertson Memorial Prize Lindsay Robertson (1936–1974) was the first landscape architect appointed to the State Planning Authority in New South Wales. He graduated from UNSW with an honours degree in Architecture in 1960 gaining a scholarship to attend the University of Pennsylvania, USA. This prize was established through the efforts of his close colleagues: Bill Ashton, John Hodges, Bob Myer and John Roseth.
The Andreasens Green Excellence in Planting Prizes The Andreasens Green student prizes recognise excellence in planting design. Andreasens Green actively supports the future of landscape architecture and the education of students.
The Tract Consultants Portfolio Prize Tract Consultants is a national landscape architecture and urban design practice. This prize supports the practice of landscape architecture by promoting an awareness of the need to build skills across various disciplines.
Planning The Department of Planning and Infrastructure Prize The Department of Planning and Infrastructure supports sustainable growth in NSW. Its work includes long-term planning for the State’s regions and ensuring the planning system is efficient and effective.
The Gary Shiels and Associates GSA Planning Prize Gary Shiels, a Built Environment alumnus, provides this Prize as a means of giving back to UNSW and its students and an incentive to encourage excellence in planning.
Hans Westerman Prize Emeritus Professor Hans Westerman AM was Professor and Head of School of Town Planning at UNSW from 1979–1991.
The John Shaw Memorial Prize John Shaw (1927–1977) was appointed as Lecturer in Town Planning at UNSW in 1957 and Associate Professor in 1963. He was awarded his PhD from UNSW and established Australia’s first undergraduate degree in Town Planning at UNSW in 1971. This Prize was instigated by his colleague, the late Elias Duek-Cohen and the Shaw family.
The Planning Institute of Australia (NSW) The Planning Institute of Australia is a peak body representing professions involved in planning Australia’s cities, towns, regions and places. This prize encourages students to strive for excellence in planning and uphold the integrity and practice of the profession.
