UNSW Built Environment PhD party and celebrations This year saw a combined total of 18 PhD students graduate from UNSW Built Environment cohort. To recognise the outstanding achievements of these students, UNSW Built Environment hosted a PhD party, presenting each student with their customary graduation hood prior to the graduation ceremony. Both June and November celebrations took place at UNSW Built Environment’s Red Centre Gallery and were well attended by students, their families, staff and supervisors. Dr Shane Geha of EG Property Group, received his PhD in June and also held a PhD party. Shane asked his guests not to bring presents and to, instead, support his company’s Built Environment Award for students. Shane raised $7,250 at the party and presented the cheque to UNSW Built Environment. “EG Property Group chooses to donate to UNSW Built Environment as it has the reputation of being the best planning faculty in Australia” said Shane.e. Harry Seidler and UNSW Built Environment
We are delighted to announce the creation of the endowed UNSW Built Environment Seidler Chair in the Practice of Architecture. The Seidler Chair is accompanied by the establishment of the Seidler PhD Scholarship and Seidler Studios. The three design and research initiatives have been generously enabled by Dr Penelope Seidler AM and the Seidler Architectural Foundation. Dr Seidler has a long-standing association with UNSW Built Environment as well as UNSW Art & Design and has supported the faculty through her advice and expertise on our Advisory Council. The Seidler Chair in the Practice of Architecture is to be held by an outstanding architect who will significantly enhance teaching and learning in architecture from a practice perspective and contribute to the public debate and knowledge of architecture. The Seidler Chair is UNSW’s first named chair in the practice of architecture and possibly, the first in Australia. The accompanying architectural research Seidler PhD Scholarship is intended to advance knowledge of modern architecture within an Australian context. This Scholarship will be offered in 2015. In November this year, the first of the Seidler Studios was held for third year and Masters architecture students with the second Seidler Studio planned for 2015. It will offer students an international design studio experience that draws on the ideas and influences of Harry Seidler. Harry Seidler was our first Visiting Professor and gave six lectures in 1980. The lectures are a unique summary of Seidler’s architectural philosophy and approach to modern design – his details, construction, aesthetics, philosophy on housing and even two lectures of how he saw an affinity between the baroque and modern form. UNSW Built Environment celebrates 40 years of Landscape Architecture
ARC Linkage Project Exhibited at Sydney Customs House Three years of research into the development of the next generation of Sydney’s bus stops was displayed at Sydney’s Customs House recently. Hank Haeusler’s project ‘Encircle’ features interactive computer displays, sensors and sleek wooden panelling. Its digital technology provides real-time public information, directions, ticketing and even improved surveillance and safety of travellers.
In 1974, UNSW Australia was the first Australian university to offer a degree in landscape architecture. It is currently the only fully accredited landscape architecture degree in NSW. Since its inception, UNSW Built Environment continuously evolved and adapted to recognise changes in industry and meet its needs.
