2010-2011 CAROLINA PRODUCTIONS ANNUAL REPORT

INTRODUCTION Carolina Productions is a student-operated organization that provides entertaining, educational, traditional and diverse programs to USC students, faculty, staff and community members. These programs encompass the ideas, issues, and interests of the University of South Carolina community, as well as the Carolinian Creed and University mission. Carolina Productions also provides accessible opportunities for the social, cultural, intellectual, and leadership development of University of South Carolina students. Carolina Productions committees are: • Cinematic Arts • Comedic and Traditional Events • Concerts • Cultural Awareness • Ideas and Issues • Special Programs In addition to the committee coordinators, the CP Executive Board also includes the Vice President for Internal Affairs, Vice President for Finance and President. Carolina Productions is advised by the Program Advisor and Graduate Assistant. Our offices are located in the Campus Life Center (Russell House 227) and can be found online at www.cp.sc.edu. Questions about this report can be forwarded to Sarah Morgan, Carolina Productions Program Advisor at 803-777-7130 or morgans@mailbox.sc.edu.

METHODOLOGY & LIMITATIONS Carolina Productions hosted a total of 53 events and 55 movie titles throughout the 2010-2011 academic year. Use of the Turbo Tracking system was not feasible at all events. The Turbo attendance tracking system was used for 35 events and 55 movie titles throughout the academic year. By scanning their USC IDs upon entering the event, students, faculty, and staff provided Carolina Productions with their names, email addresses, age, academic classification, gender and mailing address for tracking on and off-campus involvement. The data reflected in this report does not fully reflect all attendees, as some students, faculty and staff came to CP events without their Carolina Card or arrived after Turbo systems were shut down. Each event’s data was formatted and processed through Microsoft Excel with the Pivot Table function. This function allowed advisors to quickly analyze and break down key assessment data from each event. However, this process does not allow to effectively check for repeat attendees; this limits the accuracy of unique attendance data. Satisfaction surveys were delivered by Student Voice (www.studentvoice.com) and were sent out to each attendee who scanned their card. Attendees were asked to complete a brief evaluation of their experience, detailing how they heard about the event, why the decided to attend, whether they enjoyed themselves, and whether they would attend a similar event in the future. This information is useful in planning for future semesters and evaluating advertising methods.

2010-2011 CAROLINA PRODUCTIONS ANNUAL REPORT

INTERESTING STATISTICS Total Attendance: 31,549 Over 10,000 students attended at least one of the 35 events and 55 movies Carolina Productions hosted during the 2010-2011 academic year. On-campus students comprised 51% of all attendees. This is surprising, as off-campus students are more difficult to keep on campus, or return, for events. Bates, South Tower and Capstone consistently had the most audience members of all residence halls More off-campus students attended Frank Warren of PostSecret and Dr. Cornel West than those who live on-campus Females represented 57% of all attendees The Wailers had exactly a 50/50 ratio of men to women More sophomores came to the Student Comedy Competition than any other class level More seniors came to Frank Warren of PostSecret than any other class level USC Idol brought out a fairly even distribution of class levels (23% freshmen, 22% sophomores, 21% juniors, 22% seniors) Capstone co-sponsored an event with Harlan Cohen, author of The Naked Roommate, a favorite first-year reading book, particularly in U101 classes Eboo Patel’s appearance was made possible by a partnership with President Pastides’ office, the religious studies department, and various campus faith groups Dr. Cornel West was co-sponsored by the African-American Studies Department and had over 1,400 individuals attend, as part of the Robert Smalls Lecture Series Matisyahu had the highest attendance for a CP event at the Koger Center in the past three years (1,539 students, faculty and staff) At-capacity events include Hypnotist Michael C. YOU ASKED FOR IT, YOU GOT IT! Through surveys administered after each event, as well as feedback from our website, Carolina Productions solicits feedback from anyone interested in sharing their opinions at the end of each semester. The goal of this survey is to understand the broad and minute programming trends on the University of South Carolina campus. Many times, the feedback we receive points directly at acts Carolina Productions has investigated and/or booked for USC. Here are some examples of performances that were specifically requested by USC students and produced by Carolina Productions!

• Comedian Bo Burnham (September 29, 2009) • Comedian Charlie Murphy (February 25, 2009) • Fashion shows (November 10, 2010) • Musician Girl Talk (February 25, 2010) • Musician Matisyahu (April 6, 2011) • Musician Matt Nathanson (August 17, 2009) • Reduced Shakespeare Company (November 9, 2010) • Self-defense workshop (by means of Girls Fight Back!) (April 18, 2011) • Speaker Frank Warren from PostSecret (February 7, 2011) • Student film festival (by means of Campus MovieFest) (January 28, 2011)

Events booked for Fall 2011 • Bongo Ball Mania • Comedian Michael Ian Black • Dance workshop (by means of 61Syx Teknique) • Magician Justin “Kredible” Willman

2010-2011 CAROLINA PRODUCTIONS ANNUAL REPORT

OBSERVATIONS & CONCLUSIONS First and foremost, credit needs to be given to the students who make up Carolina Productions. These students (at both the basic membership level and those who make up the leadership of this organization) worked tirelessly to create a year’s worth of exciting and engaging events for the students, faculty and staff of the University of South Carolina. Months of brainstorming, planning and executing were involved in each of the 51 programs and 55 movies sponsored by Carolina Productions. They had some amazing successes and a few challenges this year and handled them with dignity and adaptability. History has proven that attendance is higher in the Fall semester. This could result from U101 and other classes offering credit for attending events, or the beginning-of-the-year enthusiasm that students bring. Though some would say that the quality of programs increases in the Spring, this is not always reflected in our audience size. By second semester, students have found their niche, which does not always include attending campus events. Based on the information we have gathered through our assessments, Carolina Productions can conclude that the events that bring the largest audiences are either those which professors can offer extra credit for attending, have heavy pop-culture influence or give students the opportunity to showcase their talents and compete. Student competitions bring more students out not only to support their friends, but because there is an audience text-in vote, they need to be present in order to find out how to vote. Carolina Productions purposefully added the option of “I received class credit for attending” to the “why did you attend this event” question to our assessment, as many times, we are unaware that professors are offering this to students. Though the connections can be difficult to figure out, we appreciate any and all support we receive from our academic partners! Some of the classes that offered extra credit for attending a Carolina Productions event this year were: • ENG 101—Critical Reading and Composition (Spoken Word Wednesday feat. Oveous Maximus and Reduced Shakespeare Company) • ENG 102—Rhetoric and Composition (Dr. Cornel West) • HPEB 753—Obesity and Eating Disorders (Stacy Nadeau) • MGT 371—Principles of Management (Josh Blue) • PSYCH 330—Psychology and the African-American Experience (Spoken Word Wednesday feat. Oveous Maximus) • PSYC 410—Survey of Abnormal Psychology (Frank Warren and Stacy Nadeau) • REL 110—Introduction to Religious Studies (Eboo Patel) • U101 (Spoken Word Wednesday feat. Oveous Maximus, Harlan Cohen, and Jenny Sanford) • WGST 111—Women in Culture (Birdcage and Project Condom) When analyzing our assessment, it is clear that Carolina Productions is meeting its goal to provide programs and events that are relevant, entertaining and educational to the University of South Carolina community. With over 12,000 individual students attending, participating or being touched by a Carolina Productions event, we are reaching nearly half the undergraduate student population at USC. While the number of unique attendees went down as compared to last year, it proves that CP is making a name and a brand for itself and meeting the diverse and broad programming needs (which can vary from week to week and from student to student!) of the student body at the University of South Carolina. Out of 391 responses, 373 students responded that were “very likely” or “moderately likely” to attend a similar event to the one they attended in the future. With the implementation of this evaluation process, Carolina Productions has had the chance to take an in-depth look at our audience. Throughout this year (as presumably years past), first year students and women have made up the vast majority of our audiences. This is consistent with college programming around the country. The challenge for Carolina Productions during 2010-2011 will be to increase participation by males as a whole as well as increase upper-class attendance without alienating our significant first-year and female audience. This may take the form of more purposeful and targeted advertising or population-specific programming. Carolina Productions will continue to assess our programs from our audience in the next academic year, and will also being to assess students who participate in our competitions, to understand why they chose to compete and if/how that impacted their time at Carolina. We look forward to sharing our information with you next year!
