WELCOME FROM YOUR GUILD CHAIR

h

So, this is it - you’re either arriving on SB for the first time ever or are returning after a three month break, and you’re probably feeling a little bewildered by it all. Well do not worry, because everything is under control; the parties are planned, the free pizza is booked and we’re good to go for another brilliant Welcome Week! There have been a few changes on campus over the summer. The new amenities building, which you can read up about on page 6, is now close to completion, and the new Guild Officers have come into their roles – meet them on page 4. You can find out most of what you need to know about SB from this booklet, but if you think there is something we’ve missed then just speak to the Guild Officers or Week One Reps, who will be around all the time during the week and almost as much during the rest of the year (although we do need a break sometimes too!). Anyway, I wish you a great time in Welcome Week and a very warm welcome to Sutton Bonington campus. We hope you enjoy what we’ve got planned for the rest of the year!

Jake Richards, Sutton Bonington Guild Chair

THE GUILD A Sutton Bonington is the home of the Schools of Biosciences and Veterinary Medicine & Science. Set 12 miles from the central university campus in the beautiful Nottinghamshire countryside, life here – though amazing – can be a little different to that at University Park. That’s where the Guild comes in. The moment you become a student of the University at SB, you automatically become a member of both the SB Guild and Students’ Union. The Guild is your very own facet of the Union led by a brilliant team of parttime student officers, and it’s there to make sure you get events, activities and support tailored to your needs. The Guild also works as your gateway to Students’ Union networks and services, ensuring you feel as included as possible in life at Nottingham. If you’re interested in how the Guild works, have an idea or are looking for support, get in touch with your Guild Officers. Turn to pages 4-5 to meet them!

THE GUILD OFFICERS

S

Now you know what your Guild is and what it can offer you during your time at the University, it’s time to meet your Guild Officers. The Officers, who are current students, hold their positions part-time and are here to support and represent you. They campaign on the issues you care about and work hard to ensure you have a fantastic, enriching time while studying on the Sutton Bonington campus. They also provide a link between SB and the Students’ Union, working with the full-time officers at University Park to ensure SB students are properly represented and have access to all the same activities and services. We’ve still got a couple of positions open for new candidates: IMS Officer and Female Welfare Officer. Elections will re-open in November, so keep an eye out for the news!

Jake Richards Guild Chair | os-susbgc@nottingham.ac.uk I’m Jake, a third year Agriculture with Crop Science student. Last year I was Guild Treasurer and an active member of SB Agrics, the Union’s agricultural society. As Guild Chair I oversee the running of all student activities on campus and liaise with the University and Students’ Union to ensure that SB voices are heard.

Amy stamp Guild Treasurer | svyalst@nottingham.ac.uk Hi, I’m Amy. This year I’ll be your Guild Treasurer, which means I ensure that we have money in the right places to make campus life the best it can be. I’m also the Music Society president and have been instrumental, if you’ll pardon the pun, in setting up the Sutton Bonington Symphony Orchestra.

4

Chris newman Guild Vice-Chair & Welfare Officer | stycjne@nottingham.ac.uk I’m a third year Microbiologist, have previously held the role of Hall Welfare Officer and last year set up MicroSoc, the microbiology society. As Vice Guild Chair I look after elections and Guild procedures, and I also play a key part in the infamous OKA Weekend. As Welfare Officer my job is to liaise with Harry (Equal Opportunities Officer), the University, health services and the Student Advice Centre team to put students looking for support in contact with the right people.

Jess Warren Campaigns Officer & Hall President | svyjkwa@nottingham.ac.uk Hi, I’m Jess, your Campaigns Officer. For two years running I was the Hall President on the Guild committee, and this year within my new role I’ll be continuing my work with the Station Road campaign and working with Jake to improve local housing. I’ll also be carrying on with my duties as Hall President, where my role is to make sure everyone that lives on campus is having a good, problem-free time.

Harry Dance Equal Opportunities Officer | svyhd3@nottingham.ac.uk I’m Harry, a second year Vet student. My job is to make sure that everyone, no matter what course or background, is feeling great. I’ll be working with the Christian Union, ISSB and several other groups on campus while also chairing the welfare committee. I’ll also be raising awareness of mental health issues and ensuring that the University does all it can to provide for its students.

Tom storr Sports and Activities Officer | stytcst@nottingham.ac.uk I oversee our many societies and sports clubs that are unique to Sutton Bonington, and promote them on campus and further afield across the whole University to ensure everyone knows that our societies are the best.

NISH Bhattarai Publicity Officer | stynb3@nottingham.ac.uk Hey, I’m Nish, Microbiology student and Guild Publicity Officer. I sit on both Guild and ENTs committees, making sure that all news, events and information are delivered to you in the best possible way!
