YOUR STUDENTS’ UNION

S

We’re your Students’ Union. The moment you started at the University you automatically became a member of the Students’ Union, a registered charity separate to the University. Under the leadership of a team of Officers elected by you, we have the hugely important job of making your time at Nottingham brilliant. University is about more than just a degree, so whether you’re after activities, representation, welfare support, employability or just an ice-cold post-lecture pint, we’ll be here for you throughout your studies. This Welcome Guide is your introduction to life at Nottingham. There’ll be a lot going on once you’ve got started, so we’ve provided all the information you’ll need to make the most out of your first few weeks. So, what are you waiting for? Read on, get to know the Union and start your journey.

Welcome to Nottingham.

THE OFFICERS

S

At the SU we’re led by students, for students. Your Officer team is made up of elected students who are either on a year out from their studies or have just graduated. The Officers use your views to shape the Students’ Union and effect change within the University. In the past they’ve led campaigns to make local taxis safer, improve street lighting, create second-hand book schemes and most recently to completely revamp the Portland Building. Take a look at their smiling faces below and, to learn more about what they do, just flick through this guide. You can also follow them on Twitter to see what they’re getting up to!

SETTLING IN

h

Welcome! Two years ago I arrived here brand new, knowing little to nothing of the University, the Students’ Union or the city. I know how unnerving the experience can be, but don’t forget that everyone around you is in exactly the same situation. So, my advice is to be involved, take the initiative and make this experience suit your own interests and values. Whether it’s going along to a sports club or society, running to be on a student committee or just introducing yourself to someone new, I guarantee that wherever you choose to go you’ll find a whole host of like-minded people there to greet you. If you have an idea, issue or just need a little advice then don’t hesitate to get in touch. University life is going to fly by, so make it count - and most importantly, make it your own! UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM STUDENTS’ UNION

WHERE AM I?

h

University Park

Derby

Most of you will be living on University Park, which is near Beeston (you can learn more about Beeston on p. 24.) The Students’ Union can be found on campus in the Portland Building; head over to say hello, grab some food or get your very first university drink at Mooch, the SU bar.

A student committee called UNAD (University of Nottingham at Derby) are your go-to people for sports, societies, welfare help and social events. UNAD has its own dedicated student space - complete with piano! - and you have your very own Week One Reps.

Jubilee

Sutton Bonington You’re in a great position to explore both Nottingham and Loughborough. The SB Guild, your on-campus gateway to Students’ Union services, is based in The Bungalow and will be moving to the brand new amenities building in January 2015. Check out your very own Sutton Bonington Guide for more info.

10 10

You’re actually not far from University Park, which means you can just head over and visit the Students’ Union in Portland Building. Don’t worry, though – you still have your own SU shop on campus, and you even have your own Starbucks. Try not to over-caffeinate in your first week, okay?

The Guide ALL ABOUT HALLS

h

Hall Committees Your Hall Committee is there to make sure you have a fantastic experience in halls! They’ll organise events and ensure you are represented to hall management. There are three different kinds of Hall Committee: JCR: If you are an undergraduate living on campus, you’ll be represented by a JCR (Junior Common Room). MCR: If you live in Melton Hall, you’ll be represented by the MCR (Middle Common Room). Student Committee: If you live in Broadgate Park, Raleigh Park or St. Peter’s Court, you’ll find you have your very own Student Committee representing you. In October, you will have a chance to be elected to your Hall Committee. Just chat to your current Hall Committee to get an idea of what it’s all about.

GETTING AROUND

F There’s a lot to explore, whether you’re planning to head off into town or need to visit another campus for an event. Hop on a free Hopper bus, grab a taxi or get some exercise by cycling around campus. For buses to and from University Park, look out for the following numbers:

NOTTINGHAM: CITY LOOP 34 / 36 SUTTON BONINGTON: 901 DERBY: 904 JUBILEE: 903 KING’S MEADOW: 902

STUDYING AT DERBY LOCAL BUSES HOPPER BUSES

If you need any more bus times or details of services going to and from Jubilee, Sutton Bonington and Derby, head over to the University’s website and just type ‘bus’ into the search bar.

You might’ve noticed some roadworks around University Park campus. That’s the new tramline, which next year will be up and running and connect us with the rest of Nottingham. Watch out for updates! 12

While you might have heard a lot about freshers’ week being one massive party (which it definitely can be, if you like!) there’s a whole lot more to it than club nights and bar crawls.

Visit: welcometonottingham2014.co.uk for more information.

SOCIETIES

S

HELLO! I’m Joe, the Activities Officer for 2014/15. My role is to represent and support all societies and student-run groups to ensure every one of you gets the absolute most out of your time at Nottingham. Come down to Welcome Fair on the 22nd, 23rd or 24th of September, where our fantastic students and staff will be on hand to help find the activity for you. You can also sign up online at any time of year. Oh, and if we don’t have a society that suits you then not to worry - all students have the opportunity to create their own! Drop me a line to find out more. To discover more about me and the activities available at your SU, including a full list of all our societies, take a look at the Activities Guide in your Welcome Pack or visit the SU website: su.nottingham.ac.uk. SOCIETIES

SUPPORT YOUR STUDENT GROUPS!

Whether you want to meet new people, socialise in other circles, develop a new skill or simply further an existing interest, there are over 200 societies to tickle your fancy – from the Russian Society to the Harry Potter Quidditch Society. Even if you haven’t had a proper hobby since primary school, this is your chance to get involved again.

Even if you don’t consider yourself a budding journalist, techie-to-be or TV presenter in the making, you can still support the Union’s studentrun groups by making the most of the services they offer. Head over to their websites to watch, listen and read. Impact Magazine impactnottingham.com

Take a look through the Activities Guide for more information on our societies and student groups, which also include Nightline, Karnival and TEC PA & Lighting.

a Volunteering – good for the soul, and the CV! Better still, you can commit as little or as much time as you want; whether you fancy doing an hour a week or getting your teeth into a longer-term project like coaching a children’s rugby team or running a fairtrade café. To join the 3,000 students already involved in volunteering, have a gander at the different projects available on our website, or visit the Student Volunteer Centre (SVC) in the Portland Building at the University Park campus.

EXPLORING NOTTINGHAM

S Hey, guys! I’m Mike, your Students’ Union Community Officer. I represent you on all issues relating to where and how you live as residents of your local areas. Working with local partners such as the City Council, Nottingham Trent University and our own departments, I will be campaigning throughout the year to make your student life, wherever you choose to live, an incredible experience. With restaurants, cafés, pubs, bars, clubs, galleries, fashion boutiques, cinemas, theatres and an array of other quirky local highlights dotted around the city, in Nottingham there is always something to do. Grab a guide to independent businesses and local retail from the Students’ Union reception in Portland Building if you are ever stuck for ideas. Have a brilliant year! Mike Olatokun Community Officer sucommunity@nottingham.ac.uk @UoNSU_Community

22 22

GET TO KNOW NOTTINGHAM The best way to get settled into Nottingham and learn just what it has to offer is to get out there and explore. To help you get started, we’ve pulled together a few ideas of places you can go. After that, it’s up to you!

Music Capital FM Arena is the city’s biggest venue with a crowd capacity of 10,000. For smaller gigs head to Rock City, one of the UK’s best independent live venues.

Theatre Nottingham Playhouse has a little bit of everything, with shows and plays alongside creative writing workshops. You can also get your culture fix with Nottingham New Theatre, our very own student-run theatre company.

Cinema Showcase Cinema is only a stone’s throw from the University Park campus – great if you want to catch a quick film, while Broadway is just one of several independent cinemas in Nottingham and is perfect for film buffs.

AWESOME NIGHTLIFE!

GREAT SHOPPING!

23 23

WE DEFY YOU TO BE BORED!

Shopping Whether you’re looking for an outfit, stuff for your new flat, cake or a pile of comics, Nottingham has a bit of everything. Head to the Victoria Centre for your big high street chains, then explore the streets for independent and specialist shops.

Bars There are loads of pubs and bars in Nottingham – but at the Students’ Union, we only have eyes for Mooch. Located in the basement of Portland Building, it’s your one-stop shop for drinks, burgers and bar snacks.

Clubs Aren’t you supposed to be studying? Home by 12, okay? Ocean is the only place to be on a Friday night for Nottingham students. If you’re after something a bit different try The Bodega, which is also a popular gig venue.

Food You’re spoilt for choice in Nottingham. Bagel Nash and Jam Café are just a couple of places to start, but be sure to take yourself on a food tour of the city.

Beeston If you’re living on University Park you’ll be a few minutes’ walk from Beeston, where there’s a whole host of cafés, restaurants, high-street stores and useful services like banks, hairdressers and Post Offices.

Hi,

EDUCATION

I’m Adam BK, your Education Officer. My job is to represent the views and academic interests of all 34,000 of our students and help shape changes at a university level. As part of our Education Network we have a team of more than 800 elected Course Reps that can listen to any views or problems you might have about your studies and help you to make a change or get support.

Each school or department also has a School Education Rep who supports the Course Reps in their school and helps me to stay connected to what’s happening around the University. I’ll try my best to bump into all of you at some point in the year but you can always send me an email, Tweet me or drop into our office in the Portland Building if you have any concerns.
