TRY IT!

Still unsure whether a society could be for you? TRY IT! is our brand new taster session programme. Through a week of free activities, trips and classes you can give a selection of our societies and sports clubs a go, whether you were thinking of joining Fiesta Soc or hoping to find out more about korfball. Sessions take place across three of our campuses. Look out for campus initials to find out where an activity is taking place: UP - University Park SB - Sutton Bonington JU - Jubilee If you’d like to attend a session just turn up! For more popular events, societies will be working on a first come first served basis. If you’d like to find out more about a society, or ask them a question, just visit the societies section of the Students’ Union website: su.nottingham.ac.uk/ societies

TRY IT! Latin, Ballroom & Salsa (LBSS) Monday 13th October 11am-12pm UP Atrium, Portland Building LBSS will make you feel like dancing! Meet the team and watch them strut their stuff before learning a few basic steps in a taster lesson. You’ll also find out more about membership and group dance lessons, with the opportunity to join at the end.

Ever wanted to learn the fancy tricks of the coolest bar staff? Flair involves more than just chucking around bottles and bar tools; it’s a work of performance art made up of flipping, spinning and balancing. Take part in this workshop to learn more about the basics of Flair! Pole Dance Society Monday 13th October 1pm-2pm UP The Hub, Portland Building

Pole dance has had a surge in popularity in recent years as a fun form of exercise; it’s not only great for your abs but a unique form of cardio and resistance training. Meet the Society, watch a demonstration and give it a go in one of two 25 minute taster sessions.

Board games aren’t just for power cuts. Take a walk back in time to life before the internet (if you can imagine it), grab your housemates and play games like Giant Jenga, Rapido and Articulate with the Board Games Society. Taekwondo 6pm-8pm UP Lower Practice Room, Sports Centre A Korean martial art and Olympic sport, taekwondo mixes combat and self-defence techniques with sport and exercise. Throw on some loose clothing and join the Taekwondo Club for a taster session, where you’ll learn some of the basics and see the experts at work. Tamil 6:30pm-7:30pm UP Atrium, Portland Building

Get an insight into Tamil culture at this Gaana Dance performance. A type of street dance that originated in South India, Gaana is fun, energetic and upbeat. If you’d like to know more, just come and watch!

Wind down from the first few weeks of the semester with a relaxing yoga taster session. Get introduced to an exercise that isn’t just brilliant for strength and flexibility but mental health and mindfulness, too. Maths Soc Tuesday 14th October 12pm-1pm UP A42, Sir Clive Grainger Building Are you a maths or physics student, or maybe just a big fan of numbers? Find out what Maths Soc membership could offer you, which includes improved employability prospects, internships and just a chance to chill out and socialise. Blade Society Tuesday 14th October 6pm-7pm UP Atrium, Portland Building Let’s roll! Whether you’re already confident on wheels or are a total newcomer, in this session you’ll have the chance to learn the basics of inline skating before taking part in roller basketball or roller hockey. Western Animated Media Tuesday 14th October 7pm-8pm UP A44, Sir Clive Grainger Building Reach for the sky and show off your Disney & Pixar knowledge at WAM’s themed pub quiz, where there’ll be a prize for the biggest animation geek. Who knew sobbing at Up would ever prove useful?

Technical Theatre Workshop 10am-11:30am and 2:00pm-3:30pm UP Lakeside Theatre Learn how to make good theatre great with lighting, sound, props, design and crew. Work with the backstage pros on the lighting desk and have a go at creating a soundtrack while learning all about how to make the most of the stage.

Idiot School 10am-12pm UP Performance Arts Studio, Lakeside There’s an art to being an idiot. Join local artist Mark Curwood to explore playfulness, play games and embrace the ridiculousness, mischief and tomfoolery while thinking about the importance of the lighter side of life.

Jam Session 12:00-1:30pm UP Lakeside Theatre See what MusSoc and BlowSoc, the Music Department’s two main music societies, can do. Hear performances by some smaller ensembles, chat to musicians and learn more about how to join these societies, as well as how to get involved in the University Choir.

TRY IT! Conservation Soc 1pm-4pm UP Meet outside Portland Building Get some feel-good vibes and give back to Mother Earth. In this session you’ll join Conservation Soc to spend some time in the fresh air and get to know fellow conservationists at the University – a great starting point if you’re thinking of getting involved in the future.

Hindu Society 1pm-2pm JU C33, Exchange Take part in a Garba dance session with the Hindu Society, the society behind this year’s hugely successful Holi on the Downs. See a demonstration and learn about the traditions behind the dance while getting to know the members.

Fiesta Society 1pm-1:30pm SB A32, Main Building Do you like piña coladas? Or getting caught in the rain? Enjoy some sangria, hit a piñata and throw some moves to Latin music to celebrate Latin American culture with Fiesta Soc.

Ten Pin Bowling 1:45pm – 3:45pm UP Outside Portland Building Join Ten Pin Bowling for a free session at MFA Bowl, where you’ll also have the chance to buy extra games for £2 each. They’ll be meeting outside Portland Building before heading to the venue – so don’t forget to bring change for your bus fare!

SB Players 2pm-2:30pm SB A32, Main Building To SB, or not to SB… Get theatrical in this session with SB Players, Sutton Bonington’s drama society. Meet the team, get stuck into some drama games and find out about the performances planned for the year.

Stop the Traffik 2pm-3pm UP The Hub, Portland Building Stop the Traffik is a global organisation working to fight human trafficking. At Nottingham the Stop the Traffik Society campaigns to build awareness on campus, and in this session you’ll find out more about their work over games and snacks.

Lakeside Literacy Project 2pm-4pm UP Djanogly Gallery, Lakeside If you’re great with kids and love to get creative then the Lakeside Literacy Project is for you. As part of the project you’ll lead workshops, games and creative writing to get even the most reluctant pupils to put pencil to paper – come along to this session to learn more. Ultimate Frisbee 2pm-4pm UP Willoughby

ULTIMATE FRISBEE

Frisbee as you’ve never seen it before. Forget standing in a triangle and trying to snap a slow-flying disk out of the air; this is a super-fast sport requiring agility and endurance. Catching ability preferable, but not essential. SB Rock Climbing 3pm-3:30pm SB Climbing Wall Unleash your inner Spiderman at the SB Climbing Wall. Under the watchful eyes of the society committee, you’ll be able to have a go at climbing completely free of charge and ask any questions you might have about society membership.

SB Run Society 3:30pm – 4:30pm SB Meet outside Sports Centre Shake off those Welcome cobwebs with Run Society. Starting with a warm up, you’ll head for a 3-5km run down the SB village and along the canal before cooling down. Make some fitness friends and get active!

Quidditch Society 4pm-5pm UP The Downs Still not received your letter from Hogwarts? Well, don’t let that stop you joining our University Quidditch team! Have a go at a quirky combination of dodgeball, netball and a tiny bit of rugby in this fun and fast-paced game. Watch out for bludgers. SB Rugby 6pm – 7pm SB Meet outside Sports Centre Whether you’ve never tried rugby before or are hoping to join the team, this session for both male and female players is the perfect place to start. Judo 6pm – 7pm JU Sports Centre Judo is an Olympic sport and martial art which uses throws, locks, pins and chokes to disable an opponent. The Judo Club continues to go from strength to strength so it’s a great time to get involved – just bring along a bottle of water to this taster session, and they’ll provide the rest. Swing Society 7pm-8pm UP Atrium, Portland Building Try your hand at a free Charleston class and get dancing like Gatsby. No prior experience – or dance partner – required, just head along and learn the moves.

Geography Society 2pm-5pm UP Meet outside Portland Building Step out of halls and into the great outdoors with Geography Society. You’ll be spending an afternoon on a conservation project at Highfields before heading to Mooch for a welldeserved drink. Capoeira 5pm-6pm UP The Den, Portland Building Like to think of yourself as a lover and a fighter? Give capoeira a go, a martial art that mixes dance, acrobatics and music, and watch the pros show off their skills. No experience required – just smooth moves and fast feet. Triathlon 7pm-8:30pm UP Meeting outside the Sports Centre

Fancy a fitness challenge? Get an introduction to triathlon training with steady running and circuit sessions. All are welcome, whether you’re a seasoned sportsperson or a triathlete in the making – just bring trainers, gym kit and a bottle of water.

Musicality 8pm-9pm UP Music Department Rehearsal Hall Make a song and dance of things with Musicality, Nottingham’s musical theatre society. Whether you’re a wannabe director, costume-maker, singer or dancer, get a taste of what they get up to. Bring your jazz hands.

Hoop Soc 12pm-1pm UP Atrium, Portland Building If the first thing you think of when you hear ‘hula hoop’ is a tasty packet of crisps, it might be time to learn more about the world of hooping. Meet Hoop Soc members, watch demonstrations and shake those hips at this hour-long taster session.

Belly Dance 1pm-2pm UP The Hub, Portland Building Belly Dance isn’t just an exotic form of dancing – it’s actually a brilliant form of cardio-vascular exercise and a celebration of the body. Watch a performance and take part in a short class to see if it could be for you.

Oxjam: Beeston Takeover Saturday, 1pm UP Meet outside Portland Building A perfect chance for newcomers to learn more about the work of the Oxfam Society, Oxjam is a music festival led by the organisation and its volunteers. The society will be lending a hand with campaigns and helping out on the day – get stuck into a brilliant local event!

Women’s Basketball Saturday, 10am-12pm JU Sports Centre Struggle to keep still in netball? Give basketball a try! The Women’s Basketball Club is keen to take on new players for their teams, so even if you’ve never played before just head to Jubilee and take part in this training session.

Korfball Sunday, 2pm – 3:30pm UP Sports Centre What’s korfball? You’re not the first to ask. Put simply, it’s a bit like basketball and netball played with mixed teams – but you can find out much more at this taster session. You’ll also get to have a go at shooting, passing and a few small games and competitions.
