WHAT IS STEPTO UOW? STEP (Special Tertiary Entrance Program) to UOW is a university preparation course for recent school leavers who experienced disadvantage while studying for their HSC (Yr 11 and/or Yr 12). This course is delivered on behalf of the University of Wollongong by UOW College. Applicants for STEP to UOW need to demonstrate that school studies have suffered because of circumstances beyond your control. The course is aimed at increasing educational opportunities for young people in the University of Wollongong’s (UOW) drawing area and regional areas* by assisting students who may not have otherwise qualified for direct entry into UOW. * See the list of eligible schools on pages 12-13.
The STEP to UOW course is a two semester program which enables students to reach the level of study required to gain entry to and succeed at university, and provides a pathway into the first year of a UOW Bachelor degree. All STEP to UOW students receive a Commonwealth Supported Place, with tuition fees funded by the Commonwealth Government. There are no student contribution fees required for this program.

ABOUT UOW COLLEGE UOW College has been helping students achieve their study goals and entry into uni for over 20 years. UOW College is situated on campus at the University of Wollongong. As a UOW College student you are immersed in the full uni experience and campus life from day one. UOW College students have access to all UOW facilities as well as the College’s own computer labs and library. By the time you enter first year uni, you feel right at home at UOW.
CLASS SIZES: UOW College tutorial groups have approximately 20 students per teacher facilitating an interactive learning approach.
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: Similar to university study, STEP to UOW students are required to undertake and submit a combination of assignments and essays, give oral presentations, participate in tutorials and sit examinations.

Students studying the Arts stream will complete Academic Literacy, General Mathematics, Cognitive Studies, Economics, Business Management, Government and Policy, and History and Culture subjects.
Business & Commerce
Four year professional degrees offered by the Faculty of Health & Behavioural Sciences or the Faculty of Science and all double degree programs are excluded. Students wishing to study a 4 year or double degree may apply to transfer internally to the degree after one year of study at UOW. COMMERCE Students studying the Commerce stream will complete Academic Literacy, Mathematics, Economics, Business Management and Accountancy subjects.
Programming subjects. Applicants for the Maths/IT stream must have completed HSC 2 Unit Maths (or equivalent) and achieved >60%.
SCIENCE Students studying the Science stream will complete Academic Literacy, Mathematics, Cognitive Studies, Physics, Chemistry, and History and Culture subjects.
ENGINEERING Students studying the Engineering stream will complete Academic English, Advanced Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry subjects. Applicants for the Engineering stream must have completed HSC 2 Unit Maths (or equivalent) and achieved >60%. For detailed subject descriptions please visit our website www.uowcollege.edu.au * Students with HSC mathematics results under the minimum requirements noted may still be considered for STEP to UOW. You may be required to undertake a maths test to determine your ability to successfully participate in the stream at the level of maths required.
MATHS /IT Students studying the Maths /IT stream will complete Academic Literacy, Advanced Mathematics, Cognitive Studies, and Computer

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

• Complete the NSW HSC and receive an ATAR in the two years prior to the commencement of the STEP to UOW program at an eligible school* (see schools list on page 12)

FLEXIBILITY - FULL TIME VS PART TIME At UOW College we understand that each individual is different. We understand that you may have other priorities or commitments that hinder full time study. Sometimes you might need to work a bit more (or a bit less), spend time with your family or travel – but this doesn’t mean you have to give up study. Our flexible options mean you can take fewer subjects or a full-time study load or take a break between sessions. You can even switch between full and part time if your situation changes. WHAT SUPPORT WILL I GET? ASK ANY OF OUR STUDENTS ABOUT THEIR STUDIES WITH UOW COLLEGE AND THEY WILL TELL YOU ABOUT THEIR TEACHERS. THE FACE-TO-FACE TEACHING TIME AND SMALL CLASSES HELP STUDENTS AND TEACHERS TO DEVELOP POSITIVE WORKING RELATIONSHIPS. THIS IS JUST ONE EXAMPLE OF THE SUPPORT YOU WILL RECEIVE AS A STUDENT OF UOW COLLEGE.
ADDITIONAL ACADEMIC SUPPORT Academic support is available in the College Multimedia Centre, which has a resource centre and computer labs. Students can also make an appointment for a one on one consultation regarding any aspect of their study.
PASS PROGRAM – PEER ASSISTED STUDY SESSIONS Peer Assisted Study Sessions is a program where students work together to develop effective study strategies, share ideas and promote understanding and support among peers. PASS consists of weekly one-hour, noncompulsory sessions led by ‘Peer Leaders’ who are former-students who have excelled at the subject in the past.
LIBRARY The library is equipped with the latest computers, wireless and laptop facilities and research material. There are also areas for quiet reading as well as group study, photocopying, and print services. Quality information resources are accessible through the Library’s website, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
STUDENT COMPUTER RESOURCE CENTRE UOW’s Information Technology Services (ITS) provides training, user-guides and the student computer resources, including nine central student computer laboratories, and additional

teaching laboratories. Students can access email, internet, software and printers in the College and UOW computer labs.
WOOLYUNGAH INDIGENOUS CENTRE The centre provides for equity access, participation and outcomes for UOW Indigenous students and encourages links with the local Aboriginal community.
STUDENT ADVISORS UOW College and every UOW Faculty have advisors you can contact with concerns or problems. The advisors provide liaison, information, support and referral, as well as programs supporting student equity and diversity.
DISABILITY SERVICES A range of disability services are available to ensure all individuals have an optimal study experience at UOW. Services include advice and support, assistive technology, note-takers, volunteer readers, advocacy, peer support networks, alternative exam arrangements and accessible parking.
COUNSELLING SERVICES The Counselling service provides confidential, professional and sympathetic help at times of difficulty, conflict or crisis. This service is available to all members of the campus community at no charge.

Movies are screened on most Wednesday and some Friday evenings in the UOW Hall. With the cheapest movie tickets in the Illawarra, UniMovies provides one of the best entertainment bargains, as well as the largest movie screen in Wollongong with a quality digital sound system.
As a student of UOW College, you will never be bored in your lunch hour with the regular activities organised by UOW College’s Student Relations Coordinators. Enjoy BBQs, sports competitions, and other social activities held on campus throughout the year.

D. Missed long periods of secondary schooling for reasons other than medical.

E. Missed periods of secondary schooling or experienced severe interruptions to studies due to refugee status. F. You attend a school that is supported by the Priority Schools Funding Program of the NSW Department Education and Training, or similar program.
You will need to provide the following information and support documents: 1. Your personal statement must include details of the disruption to your schooling, its duration, and the school years. 2. A certified copy of your visa showing refugee status OR a verified document for travel to Australia. 3. A Confidential Statement of Support by a responsible person.*

HOME ENVIRONMENT A. Death of an immediate family member or the death of a close friend during Years 11 or 12.

Your personal statement must include the following details: the date of death; your relationship with the deceased; the effect on you and your home environment; the effect on your educational performance. If the person suffered an illness for a long period of time, include duration and school years involved for you. 2. A certified copy of death certificate or funeral notice. 3. A statement from your school that gives details of disruption to your learning. (Must be on school letterhead and signed by the principal or senior teaching or counselling staff at the school). 4. A Confidential Statement of Support by a responsible person.*
B. Diagnosis of life threatening illness or severe illness/ disability of an immediate family member.
You will need to provide the following information and support documents: 1. Your personal statement must include information about the relationship to the person with the illness/disability; duration of illness/disability and school years involved; the effect on your home environment and how this affected your educational performance. 2. A medical certificate/report giving full details of the length of the illness and its severity. Must include information about treatment, medication and/or hospitalisation. 3. A statement from your school that gives details of disruption to your learning. (Must be on school letterhead and signed by the principal or senior person teaching or counselling staff at the school). 4. A Confidential Statement of Support by a responsible person.*
C. Divorce or separation of parents during Years 11 or 12.
You will need to provide the following information and support documents: 1. Your personal statement must include details of period of family upheaval, including its duration, and the school years involved; the effect on your home environment and how this affected your educational performance. 2. A certified copy of divorce papers or legal proceedings. 3. A Confidential Statement of Support by a responsible person.* * Examples of a responsible person are a Principal, Year Adviser, Careers Adviser, Doctor, Lawyer, Social Worker, Religious or Community Leader. This person must not be related to you.
HOME ENVIRONMENT AND RESPONSIBILTIES (ADVERSE STUDY CONDITIONS) A. Crowded living conditions at home.
You will need to provide the following information and support documents: 1. Your personal statement must include information about the number of rooms in the house; what they are used for, by whom and when; and the number of adults and children (including ages) living in the house. If you share a bedroom, state with whom and the period you have been living in these conditions and the years involved. Outline how these living conditions have affected your educational performance. 2. A floor plan of home with measurements. (Do not include land title deeds for house or strata title plans for units). 3. A Confidential Statement of Support by a responsible person.*
B. Significant and deliberate interference to studies by family members.
You will need to provide the following information and support documents: 1. Your personal statement must include details of the interference you experienced, the period you have been experiencing the interference, the school years involved and how the interference affected your educational performance. 2. A Confidential Statement of Support by a responsible person describing the interference you have experienced and explaining how it has affected your studies.*
HOME ENVIRONMENT AND RESPONSIBILTIES (EXCESSIVE FAMILY RESPONSIBILTIES) A. Excessive home or family responsibility including care of children/other family members.
You will need to provide the following information and support documents: 1. Your personal statement must include details of the exact responsibilities involved, who you care for and their relationship to you; the number of hours these responsibilities take each week; how long you have had these responsibilities; and how these responsibilities have affected your educational performance. If you have support from friends, family, neighbours or an agency you will need to include this information. 2. A Confidential statement of support from responsible person (e.g. doctor, social worker, religious or community worker).

B. Work requirements to support family and/or responsibility to work in family business.
You will need to provide the following information and support documents: 1. Your personal statement must include information about the reasons you have to work; the number of hours you work (paid or unpaid) each week; the type of work you do as well as the period you have had these responsibilities; the school years involved; and how these work commitments have affected your educational performance. 2. A statement of service from your employer/s on company letterhead. The letter must indicate your job title, period of employment and average number of hours per week. NB: If you work in a family business you must provide an independent verification (e.g. business accountant). 3. You may include an additional statement of support by a responsible person (e.g. doctor, social worker, religious or community worker). * Examples of a responsible person are a Principal, Year Adviser, Careers Adviser, Doctor, Lawyer, Social Worker, Religious or Community Leader. This person must not be related to you.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE DIFFICULTY A. Originated from a non-English speaking country and began your education in an Australian high school in Years 11 or 12.
You will need to provide the following information and support documents: 1. Your personal statement must include information about the country and the language in which you undertook your secondary school education before coming to Australia; details of ESL (English as a Second Language) support that you receive, either at school or outside school hours; hours each week; the period you have been receiving this support; and how your move to the Australian education system has affected your educational performance. 2. A certified copy of your initial immigration visa and/or an Intensive English Centre Statement of Attendance. If your residency status has changed you will need to provide verified copies of both visas. 3. A statement from your school that states the period you have been attending that school. The statement must be on school letterhead and signed by the principal or senior teaching or counselling staff at the school.
B. Originated from a non-English speaking country and began your education in an Australian high school in Year 7 or later, and English is not the language spoken at home.
You will need to provide the following information and support documents: 1. Your personal statement must include information about the country and the language in which you undertook your education before coming to Australia; the language spoken at home; and how the fact that English is not spoken at home has affected your educational performance. 2. A certified copy of your initial immigration visa and/or an Intensive English Centre Statement of Attendance. If your residency status has changed you will need to provide verified copies of both visas. 3. A statement from your school that states the period you have been attending the school. The statement must be on school letterhead and signed by the Principal or senior teaching or counselling staff at the school.
LONG TERM CONDITION OR ONGOING EFFECTS OF ABUSE A. Severe long-term medical or recurrent medical condition/ illness or a learning, physical, psychiatric or other disability; or abuse e.g. domestic violence, emotional abuse, physical abuse.
You will need to provide the following information and support documents: 1. Your personal statement must include details of your medical condition/illness/disability and the period you have had this condition/illness/disability; the school years involved; any absences from school because of your medical condition/illness/disability; and how the medical condition/ illness/disability has affected your educational performance. 2. A Medical Statement of Support giving full details of the length of the illness and its severity; including information about treatment and hospitalisation. 3. In the case of a learning disability, you will need to provide a copy of the letter from the Board of Studies describing approved Special Examination Provisions, or assessment report from the school counsellor/psychologist, or literacy assessment carried out by the Support teacher (Learning Difficulties) or equivalent. 4. A statement from your school that gives details of your absences from school. The statement must be on school letterhead and signed by the Principal or senior teaching or counselling staff at the school. * Examples of a responsible person are a Principal, Year Adviser, Careers Adviser, Doctor, Lawyer, Social Worker, Religious or Community Leader. This person must not be related to you.
HOW SELECTION IS MADE Applications are assessed objectively according to the equity criteria listed under Supporting Documentation on pages 8-11. A ranking is allocated based on the severity of hardship that the applicant has identified as well as HSC results and other criteria.
