UOW College now offers a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care that allows graduates to work in the early childhood education sector at a supervisory and Child Educator level. You can even use the diploma to apply for credit to further your studies at a university level. Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care

The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (formerly Diploma of Children’s Services) is highly regarded for early childhood professionals or for those nonprofessionals that are looking for a rewarding career enhancing a young child’s early years. The qualification is a nationally recognized qualification, so you can use it anywhere in Australia. You will learn skills such as how to manage staff who are responsible for children, how to create a safe working environment and how to promote inclusive policies and coordinate the workplace. Upon graduating the qualification will allow you to work in a range of areas and can be used to apply for credit when furthering your studies at UOW.

Career prospects Job roles and titles vary across different industry sectors. Possible job titles relevant to this qualification include: • • • • • • •

Nominated supervisor (children's services) Children's services coordinator Centre manager (children's services) Child care worker Group/team coordinator/leader (children's services) Children's adviser Children's service director/manager

Entry Requirements

There are no academic pre-requisites to this qualification. The qualification requires students to have effective language, communication, interpersonal skills and the ability to write a range of documentation. If you are currently employed in a related field such as childcare or after school services, this experience will significantly assist you in your studies. Students must be willing to attend 240 hours of placement within a Childcare Centre as part of their program of study.

Study Length

The duration of the Diploma is 3 sessions of 15 weeks. You will attend up to 20 hours of lectures and tutorials a week.

There are three intakes for the Diploma in 2014: • March • May • September


Course Description

You will complete 28 units of competency including 240 hours of work placement. Unit topics include: • Establish and maintain a safe and healthy environment for children • Provide care for babies and toddlers • Foster the holistic development and wellbeing of the child in early childhood • Establish and implement plans for developing cooperative behaviour • Design and implement the curriculum to foster children’s learning and development • Embed sustainable practices in service operations • Identify and respond to young children and young people at risk • Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting • Work in partnership with families to provide appropriate education and care for children

There is a range of payment options available for you to pay for the program: 1) Defer your fees You have the option to defer the total cost of the course using VET FEE-HELP. 2) Pay by Installments You may pay your tuition fee in three equal installments per session via credit card. 3) Upfront Payment You may choose to pay your fees upfront prior to the commencement of the course by cash, money order, Visa or MasterCard.

You are required to undertake 240 hours of work placement to ensure you have real-life training so that you are ready to step into professional employment with ease.
