THE PAW PRINT Vol. 1 Issue 1

September 12, 2017 Every Ending, Starts With a Beginning

The students of Urban Pathways 6-12 Charter School proudly present to you the first of many issues of “The Paw Print”. The first student led school newspaper. The students working on this paper put in a lot of time and effort into creating something great for the good of the student body. This newspaper will be filled with awesome thoughts, insight, and ideas from some amazing students ranging from grades 6 through 12. While still in its infancy of development, it is our goal that the Paw Print becomes something for other staff and students to build upon for years and years to come. Just as anything starting out new there is sure to be some growing pains and multiple changes happening. The team working on this paper felt it was very important to get something started to help build school moral and student/staff participation in making Urban Pathways a school that students would be excited about going to and staff would be proud to work at. On behalf of the entire Paw Print staff I would like to say thank you for taking the time to read and welcome to the “Paw Print” era, long may it reign. Hail to UP

DACA Supporters to Rally DACA which stands for the (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival) is scheduled to be phased out by President Donald Trump. This program which protects undocumented immigrants who were brought to this country as infants or children from deportation. There are some in our area who disagree with this plan to phase out the program that could affect over 80,000 individuals. Among those defenders is a group of protestors from Mt. Lebanon area who plan to stage a rally outside several business offices in the upcoming weeks. Written by: TyRaya Kitchen & Jaquan Benton

Exciting NBA Offseason This offseason NBA teams went hard at targeting great players to add to their teams. The team that I feel went the hardest were the Boston Celtics with getting Kyrie Irving in a trade from my favorite team, the Cleveland Cavaliers. In return Cavs received Isaiah Thomas a few other players, and a draft pick. I still have faith in my Cavs to beat the Celtics this year. I think LeBron will be a great mentor to Isaiah and Isaiah will have a good season. Will he have a better year than Kyrie? We will see. The eastern conference is going to be hard to win for any team. The real test will come during the NBA finals to beat Golden State Warriors since they have all their superstars coming back to their team. My Cavs always work very hard and play well during the playoffs. So I still have faith that they will be able to beat Golden State again and win another championship. World/Local News Hurricane Season in Full Effect What’s going on in the world? Well… Hurricane Irma awaits Florida, while gas stations and highways are clogged full of locals evacuating. Hurricane Katrina damage costs were $125 billion dollars, but hurricane Harvey and hurricane Irma will probably not compare. What’s your estimate? “This Hurricane could be wider than our whole state, “quotes the governor of Florida. Hurricane Irma compares to Hurricane Andrew. If you would like to help text IRMA to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross.

Largest Gun Seizure in Allegheny County Police in Allegheny County seized the largest amount of guns ever at one time last week. The owner of the house was 65 year old Gary Guyaux. He has been in jail since 2016. When police arrived at his home to remove illegal weapons, they had no idea how many were there. It took officers three days to remove all of the guns. The house was in nasty condition. 38 dogs were removed and taken to local shelters. Of all the 586 guns, most of them were loaded. In addition to assault rifles and handguns, a rocket launcher was also found in the home Written by Ty’Raya Kitchen and Ja’Quan Benton

Is your bus route going to change? Every year the Port Authority seems to be at risk of losing funding. This was supposed to change in 2013, when the state secured money to give to the authority over the next decade. State lawmakers are now planning to take some of this money to work on other projects. $80 million could be taken from the Port Authority directly. This would eliminate more than half of the 102 bus and train routes in Allegheny County. This would have a large impact on Urban Pathways students and staff who commute. As Laura Weins of Pittsburghers for Public Transit stated, “Public transit is not a choice for many people - it’s a necessity.” Written by UP Staff

Is it Time for War? North Korean leader Kim Jung Un has plans to complete another missile test. This missile a hydrogen bomb which reportedly can sit atop a ballistic missile, expanding its landing trajectory is viewed as a very serious threat by the United States and President Trump. President Trump has already stated that if provoked the USA would strike back with Military force. I ask you, is it a time for war? What else can be done to prevent a war with North Korea? My answer is no, it isn’t a time for war. Kim Jung Un and Donald Trump need to find a better way to handle their differences and not put millions of lives at stake. Sports and Clubs A US Open First For the first time in over 30 years professional women’s tennis achieved something great, the final four in the US Open tournament were all Americans. Madison Keys, Sloan Stephens, Venus Williams, and CoCo Vandeweghe. Sloan Stephens the only unraked player in this final four was the eventual championship winner beating out Madison Keys for the title. This entire tournament was filled with first and was made a historical event during the championship match. All the women in the tournament played tough and showed that America is still a force in the professional tennis world.

New Deals for Steelers Front Office As the Steelers dive into the 2017 NFL season and all the uncertainness that will sure follow, they can be sure about their front office staying in place. At least for the time being. The Steelers gave a contract extensions to Head Coach Mike Tomlin and General Manager Kevin Colbert. Mike Tomlin’s extension was for two years extending him through the 2020 NFL season. It is projected that his salary would be around 6 million per season. Kevin Colbert’s extension was also for two years running through the 2020 season. Could this mean a complete regime change after the 2020 season for the Steelers?

Clubs Clubs Clubs!!!

After surveying several students during last school year, the most common theme found was that students wanted more clubs and things to do after school. Well we are happy to say our voices have been heard. With the help of our hardworking staff we now have several clubs students can choose to participate in. These clubs created to help build student interaction and student pride are being offered by staff who are volunteering their time to do something for us, the student body. So please let’s thank everyone involved with starting these clubs and let’s get active. Below is the list of clubs along with the club’s advisor(s). Another Movie Remake On September 8th, Warner Bros. released a remake of the 1990 movie, It. The movie is about a group of friends who face their biggest fears and square off against a killer clown. I am going to give you some of my thoughts on the movie. I think the new It movie is not going to be that good. I don’t think they will be able to capture all the story from the 3 hour TV series. And, I think they are going to make it scarier than focus on the story. Check it out and let me know what you think! By Kymir Edwards
