THE PAW PRINT Vol. 1 Issue 9
May 23rd, 2018 Spelling bee completion results
Urban Pathways has yet again won another competition organized by the BSU and Key Club. Much like February’s Black History Bowl, we were able to earn two of the top three spots in the spelling bee competition. The competition which consisted of middle school students from a few local schools was very competitive and entertaining as students from all schools went round by round using their best abilities to spell words correctly. In the end there were only three contestants left standing, two of whom are from our school. The third place finish went to 6th grader Denasia Johnson (pictured left) and first place champion 6th grader Jayla Williams (pictured centered). These two 6th grade students outlasted over 28 other students, some in grades higher than them to earn this well fought victory. Please be sure to congratulate and recognize these two ladies for a job well done and for continuing to keep our winning streak during these competitions gong.
City League track and field champion We are proud to recognize one of our 11th grade students, Amber Hogan who won the 100 meter hurdles city league championship over the weekend. Amber is a member of Perry traditional high school Track and Field team. Her first place finish time posted at 13.74, which is a little under one second faster than her second place challenger Aaliyah Davis, from Allderdice high school with a time of 14.65. Amber is not only an excellent athlete, she’s also a phenomenal student maintaining a 4.0 GPA all school year long. She embodies what all student athletes here should strive to be like. Everyone be sure to congratulate her on her victory as well as being an outstanding student.
World/Local News Police busy ticketing and towing during Marathon During Sunday’s Pittsburgh Marathon, police ticketed 218 vehicles and had 184 of them towed away because they were illegally parked along the 26.2-mile Pittsburgh Marathon route, according to the public safety department. McGann and Chester Towing and Recovery took 184 of them to their pound in Mt. Washington, Everyone parked on the route got a citation of at least $100. Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich said the marathon route was marked off limits to parking several days in advance of the marathon. He said cars parked on the route can be an obstacle for runners and cause for public safety concern. “We don't want anything on the route that could become an obstacle or a security threat,” he said. Pittsburgh in the past has towed as many as 180 vehicles from the marathon route.
Volcanic eruptions in Hawaii Lava and gas continued to erupt from Kilauea volcano across a remote, rural neighborhood on Hawaii Island, and by Monday had destroyed 35 structures, including at least 26 homes, authorities said. Video published by the USGS showed asphalt roads being slowly consumed by a moving wall of molten rock, with thick red-hot lava glowing underneath, as black smoke billowed upward. USGS helicopter footage showed a river of ash cut through lush tropical forest, with a lava fountain that had been active Sunday billowing red hot molten rock around the charred landscape. There was no way to say for certain how long the current eruption would continue. In 2014, lava spilled out from the volcano and authorities worried for months that the town of Pahoa would be inundated. In the end, the supply feeding the lava shut down and it never inundated the town; just one home was destroyed. In 1990, lava flows of up to 80 feet buried the town of Kalapana, known for its historical sites and black sand beaches. A church, a store and roughly 100 homes were destroyed.
Pittsburgh Museums considering layoffs Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh will lay off its 76 security guards by July and retain a private firm to handle its increasing security needs. Carnegie Museums filed notice this month with the state Department of Labor & Industry indicating it will lay off 20 full-time and 56 part-time security guards by July 8. The guards provide security at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Carnegie Science Center and The Andy Warhol Museum. “Our primary goal is to have a stronger, more adaptable security operation,” said Betsy Momich, the museum's director of communications. She said security needs have steadily expanded over the past decade, driven by a growing number of exhibitions and programs and rental of museum space. Many of the programs and rentals are at night. Momich said the layoffs are not expected to result in any savings, adding, “That was not the motivation.”
Nuclear deal dead President Donald Trump plans to follow through on his campaign threat to pull out of the landmark nuclear accord with Iran. The agreement, struck in 2015 by the United States, other world powers and Iran, lifted most U.S. and international sanctions against the country. In return, Iran agreed to restrictions on its nuclear program making it impossible to produce a bomb, along with rigorous inspections. If the deal collapses, Iran would be free to resume prohibited enrichment activities, while businesses and banks doing business with Iran would have to scramble to extricate themselves or run afoul of the U.S. American officials were dusting off plans for how to sell a pullout to the public and explain its complex financial ramifications, said U.S. officials and others, who weren't authorized to speak ahead of an announcement and requested anonymity.
