February 27, 2019 One year anniversary of Parkland FL School shooting

Hundreds of thousands of students and adults across Florida and beyond bowed their heads in a moment of silence Thursday to mark the first anniversary of the shooting rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland that left 17 people dead. “It’s a permanent sore spot,” said Fort Lauderdale High School junior Jake Lynch. “Forever, me going forward, I’ll feel this day, and this time and those names. It reminds me of where I want the world to be. … From suffering, better things come out.” The massacre on Feb. 14, 2018, inflamed the national debate over guns, turned young people into political activists and gave rise to some of the biggest youth demonstrations since the Vietnam era. The moment of silence at more than 1,000 Florida schools was held at 10:17 a.m., though the shooting actually began around 2:20 p.m. School officials picked a different time because Stoneman Douglas students were being dismissed early to avoid being on campus at the hour of the attack. The time 10:17 was selected to denote the 17 slain. Many Stoneman Douglas students arrived wearing the burgundy #MSDStrong T-shirts that have become an emblem of the tragedy. Outside, clear plastic figurines of angels were erected for each of the 14 students and three staff members killed.

Kentucky Catholic School considering taking action against teen who harassed Native American The Diocese of Covington Catholic High in Kentucky is considering to expelling the teens who harassed a Native American Elder while wearing a MAGA hats-shirts and hoodies. Other supporters at The Indigenous Peoples March were disgusted by teen’s behavior and disrespect. Kaya Taitano another supporter at march, says the teens were in his face chanting things like “Build The Wall, Trump 2020” she says it did not feel safe in the circle. Taitano says that it was obvious what school they attended because of the uniforms they were wearing. Nathan Phillips an Elder in the Omaha tribe was singing a healing prayer and playing his drum trying to calm the crowd. The teens began mocking him and laughing at Mr. Phillips. Nathan Phillips a Vietnam Veteran who served from 1972-1976 is a former director of Native Youth Alliance and has an annual ceremony honoring Native American Veterans in Arlington National Cemetery. Mr.Phillips says “I was scared, I was worried for my young friends. I don’t want to cause harm to anyone “and then he proceeds to say “I don’t like the word hate. I don’t even like saying it but, it was hate unbridled. It was like a storm”. The crowd continues chanting as Phillips and one of the teens stand face to face. What the young man was doing was blocking my escape. I wanted to leave. I was thinking ‘How do I get myself out of this’ I wanted to get away from it” says Phillips. Kaya Taitano says the standoff proceeded to happen until a chaperone from the school escorted the kids away. The Diocese of Covington Catholic High gave a statement to CNN affiliate WLWT spokeswoman Laura Keener saying “We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic High School students toward Nathan Phillips specifically, and Native Americans in general, Jan 18 after the March for Life in Washington D.C. We extend our deepest apologies to Mr.Phillips. This behavior is opposed to the Church’s teachings on dignity and respect of the human person. “The matter is being investigated and we will take appropriate action, up to and including explosion. We know this incident also has tainted the entire witness of the March for Life and express our most sincere apologies to all those who attended the March and all those who support the pro-life movement. World/Local News Hamilton still a huge attraction Hamilton’s a big hit worldwide. It was in April 2009 when it crossed singer, songwriter, and composer Lin Manuel Miranda’s mind. He was asked by the President and First Lady, (Barack and Michele Obama) to perform something for “The American Experience” evening they were hosting. They thought it was going to be something Latin when he pulled the Puerto Rican Flag out of his pocket but it was the hit Broadway play we call “Hamilton”. Miranda says in his personal experience Hamilton reminds him of Tupac Shakur. It was thanks to Ron Chernow’s biography “Hamilton” that really gave him this idea. Just then a hit was brought to life with tickets selling at $199 for a standard ticket and $849 for premium tickets. The cast is also star studded with Lin Manuel Miranda as the main character Alexander Hamilton along with others such as Leslie Odom Jr, David Diggs, Phillipe Soo, and Renee Elise Goldsberry. Although he had trouble deciding if he wanted to incorporate rap within Hamilton because he saw similarities with Alexander Hamilton and Tupac, he ended up getting great feedback on the raps that were included in the play. The Obama’s were so captivated with his performance they told Miranda that Timothy Geithner former Secretary of State had to see this. Six years later this show is still so captivating to the world that Lin Manuel Miranda has decided to tour the show throughout Puerto Rico. Written by Marcia Hill

Baby doll hanging from light pole on City Street leads to Police investigation A baby doll found hanging from a light pole in Pittsburgh’s Homewood section Thursday morning has prompted a police investigation and outcry from a local state representative. Pittsburgh police officers found a weather-beaten, black doll hanging from a light pole at the intersection of Brushton Avenue and Mohler Street, said spokesman Chris Togneri. Pittsburgh police received the report of the hanging doll shortly after 9:30 a.m. Rep. Ed Gainey, D-Lincoln-Lemington, said in a statement that residents contacted him about the doll, and he contacted police. Togneri said investigators documented the doll and removed it. He said police continue to investigate and plan to check city cameras in the area. The police are investigating whether or not the incident was racially motivated, he said. Gainey indicated he believes it was. “I am disturbed and sickened by this incident,” he said. “I find it appalling, but sadly not surprising that in 2019 we are still confronted with these public displays of hate in our communities.”

USA Gymnastics finds yet another President USA Gymnastics has appointed former gymnast and NBA executive Li Li Leung as its president and chief executive officer, the embattled organization. "Li Li's unique combination of business skills, management experience and passion for gymnastics make her perfectly suited to lead our organization at this important time in our history," said Kathryn Carson, USA Gymnastics Board chair in a statement. Leung is the fourth person to lead the organization in 23 months as it struggles to recover from the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal. Leung's appointment has already come under fire from some of Nassar's victims. Manly accused the organization of choosing a "consummate insider" who would protect its secrets.

New PA schools threat reporting system making impact A threat reporting system now required for all Pennsylvania schools fielded more than 4,900 tips in its first month, about a third of them considered serious enough to pass along to local police and school officials. The goal of the Safe 2 Say Something program, which funnels tips to an around-the-clock call center at the attorney general’s headquarters in Harrisburg, is to respond to troubling behavior, unsafe school situations and anything else tipsters deems appropriate to report. The program passed the Legislature with near unanimity last year, mandating it encompass all K-12 students in Pennsylvania, including charter, private and vocational-technical schools. The reports come in through phone calls, by email and via an app. Callers are assured of anonymity. In the first month, nearly 1,400 contacts were deemed “life safety” tips, considered important enough to notify schools and the local 911 center. The program, which is in part a response to the frequency of mass shootings in America, is mandated in four other states. Pennsylvania is the first state to do a comprehensive launch of the program, training schools, students, 911 operators and the team that fields calls at the attorney general’s office

Sports Capel continuing to rebuild Pitts Basketball Program with new talent Pitt’s men basketball head coach Jeff Capel continued to build a solid roster for next basketball season, Friday when he received his second verbal commitment this week from a member of the class of 2019. This time, it’s a center, 6-foot-8 Karim Coulibaly of Scotland (Pa.) Performance Institute, No. 3-ranked prep school in the nation. Coulibaly, 19 years old, is a native of Mali who didn’t arrive in the U.S until the age of 14. Coulibaly recorded an impressive double-double earlier this season when he scored 42 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in a game against Rocktop Academy. Coulibaly is the No. 30 center in the nation, according to Rivals.com — No. 3 in Pennsylvania. He is rated a four-star prospect by ESPN.com and a three-star by Rivals. Coulibaly chose Pitt over 15 other scholarship offers, including from Saint Joseph’s Georgia Tech, Boston College, George Washington, Penn State, Providence, Cincinnati and Rhode Island. Pitt also landed a verbal commitment Monday from 66 small forward Gerald Drumgoole of La Lumiere School in La Porte, Ind. Drumgoole is rated a four-star prospect by 247Sports and a 3-star by Rivals. The two recruits will have a chance to compete and play right away due to Pitt’s current underwhelming roster.

The new $300 million dollar man Manny Machado has agreed to the biggest free-agent contract in American sports history, a 10-year, $300 million deal with the San Diego Padres, Machado, a four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove Award winner at third base, made $16 million between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles last season. The deal with the Padres, which is pending a physical, includes an opt-out after the fifth season and a limited no-trade clause. The Padres, who have missed the playoffs in 12 consecutive seasons, ranked 28th in the majors last season after averaging 3.8 runs per game. Machado ranks 13th among all players with 168 home runs since 2013, and his 203 doubles are good for ninth over that stretch. Machado’s strong offensive game should have an immediate impact in the Padre’s lineup.

Steelers decline to tag Bell for a third time France’s fencing federation officially recognizes Lightsaber dueling as sport Duelists can work up an impressive sweat slashing, feinting and stabbing in organized, 3-minute bouts. The physicality of lightsaber combat is part of why the French Fencing Federation threw its support behind the sport and is now equipping fencing clubs with lightsabers and training would-be lightsaber instructors. A federation spokesperson shared that including light sabering is an attempt to draw in the younger generation who need to “exercise more than just their thumbs gaming”. The spokesperson also said “we are trying to create a bond between our discipline and modern technologies, so participating in a sport feels natural.” In the past, the likes of Zorro, Robin Hood and The Three Musketeers helped lure new practitioners to fencing. Now, joining and even supplanting them are Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader.

It’s official: Le’Veon Bell will become a free agent in three weeks. General manager Kevin Colbert told reporters Wednesday that the Pittsburgh Steelers will not use the franchise or transition tag on the 27-year-old running back, which will allow him to enter free agency on March 13. Colbert said the cost of the transition tag, which is $14.54 million, would be too prohibitive for the Steelers as they enter free agency. The Steelers are about $19.4 million under the salary cap, according to overthecap.com. “Le’Veon is still a great player,” Colbert said. “We can’t afford to use the tag with the other needs that we have.” By allowing Bell to leave as a free agent, the Steelers are eligible for a compensatory draft pick in 2020. Under transition tag rules, the Steelers would have received no compensation for Bell if they declined to match an offer he received on the open market.
