March 22, 2018 Nationwide Walk-Out Day

Wednesday, March 14, 2018 was a nationwide walkout day. The walk-out was to honor those victims of the Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting in Parkland Florida. Schools around the nation organized demonstrations to honor the 17 victims of this senseless act of violence. Demonstrators all over the United States demonstrated and protested in various ways including walking out of school, marching to the capitol building, speaking at local churches and organizations. High School students here at our school elected to honor these victims by standing outside the school with locked arms and held a respectful moment of silence for the 17 victims as they read each of their names, who included Alyssa Alhadeff ,Scott Beigel , Martin Duque Anguiano , Nicholas Dworet, Aaron Feis, Jaime Guttenberg, Chris Hixon, Luke Hoyer, Cara Loughran, Gina Montalto, Joaquin Oliver, Alaina Petty, Meadow Pollack, Helena Ramsay, Alex Schachter, Carmen Schentrup, and Peter Wang. These were extraordinary kids and teachers whose lives ended too sudden in a place where they should feel safe. After interviewing several of our students who participate in the walk-out on why they chose to demonstrate, the overall team that I found was that they felt sad and hurt by these events and wanted to do what they can to bring awareness to this major problem. Several of them also shared that gun violence is a nationwide issue that doesn’t discriminate on race, gender, religion, or economic status which needs to be addressed immediately. This tragedy also stirred up a lot of controversy over gun control in United States. Students are now at the forefront to force congress and lawmakers to take a strong stand against the NRA and gun laws across the US. We hope that this was a wakeup call for all so we can finally STOP GUN VIOLENCE.

Pi Day celebration Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π. Pi Day is observed on March 14 since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of π. In celebration of this day students from our middle school participated in a pie eating contest, and pie throwing event where they were given the opportunity to throw whipped cream filled plates at teachers and staff. Students and staff all seemed to really enjoy these celebrations and a break from the traditional school day.

World/Local News Western PA Special Election to close to call In Pennsylvania’s 18th District democrat Conor Lamb has won the Pennsylvania congress seat. Lamb is the latest Democrat to defeat a Republican challenger during a special election. Lamb will now be alongside Alabama’s new democratic congressman Doug Jones who also won his special election earlier this year. Lamb’s win for Pennsylvania’s New State congress is a huge win for the Democratic Party, which will help them move closer for control in congress. Connor Lamb is promising safer roads, better healthcare, and combating the opioid crisis. He seems to be a promising new congressman. Let’s hope he fulfills his priorities.

Pedestrian Bridge Collapse in Florida Construction of the pedestrian bridge that collapsed and killed six people in the Miami area was behind schedule and millions over budget, in part because of a key change in the design and placement of one of its support towers. Documents obtained by The Associated Press through a public-records request show that the Florida Department of Transportation in October 2016 ordered Florida International University (FIU) and its contractors to move one of the bridge's main support structures 11 feet north to the edge of a canal, widening the gap between the crossing's end supports and requiring some new structural design. Though it is still unclear if the design change played a role in the failure, emails between the school, contractors, officials with the city of Sweetwater and permitting agencies show a project that ended up behind schedule, which had officials worried that further delays could jeopardize millions in federal Department of Transportation funds. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) began an investigation last Friday. Officials say crews were applying post-tensioning force on the bridge on the day the accident happened, but aren't clear on whether that caused the bridge to fall. Local authorities have said workers conducted a "stress test" the day of the collapse. Written by Taylor Dotson

St. Rosalia School to close The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh announced the school's closing Saturday, along with mergers between Monroeville's North American Martyrs School and St. Bernadette School and Assumption School in Bellevue and Northside Catholic School in Brighton Heights. Parishioners and parents were upset that they were left out of the decision making process to close the school. “We feel left out of this process,” said Mary Ann DeasyHatala, who attended St. Rosalia Academy and has four children in the school. There are 22 students in catechism classes and 99 enrolled in the pre-Kthrough-8th grade school. “There is heavy debt, and there were parents not meeting their responsibilities. Deasy-Hatala said there was little communication during the process and parishioners were led to believe the school started the year with a clean financial slate. She faulted the diocese and parish leadership for the lack of communication. She said she felt as though parents were being blamed for the closure.

Texas serial bomber finally caught Mark Anthony Conditt recorded a 25-minute confession and killed himself in a final explosion, ending a wave of package bombings that terrorized Austin for weeks. The death of the Austin bomber brought some relief to the Texas capital. But as authorities dig through the evidence, even they acknowledge the motive is a mystery. But none of the evidence that investigators have gathered has yet given police many clues as to what motivated the 23-year-old man to embark on a nearly month-long spree of violence. "It is the outcry of a much challenged young man talking about challenges in his life that led him to this point," Austin police Chief Brian Manley said of the video.

Sports and Clubs New Look Cavaliers look to improve team chemistry The Cleveland Cavaliers are going through a lot of ups and downs this season. The team with three all-star players and several other really good players couldn’t develop good enough chemistry to be productive. Consequently at the trade deadline, the team traded one of those all-star players Isaiah Thomas, along with Jae Crowder, Dwayne Wade, Derrick Rose, and Iman Shumpert. In return the Cavaliers got back some valuable role players that should help them build more consistence and chemistry. Leading the new Cavalier players are Rodney Hood, George Hill, Jordan Clarkson, and Larry Nance Jr. Nance Jr’s father Larry Nance senior also played for the Cavaliers in the late 80s and early 90s, with his jersey number being retired by the Cavaliers organization. The rebuilt Cavaliers are once again back as one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference being led by Lebron James and his 14 triple doubles since the all-star break. Larry Nance Jr. has proven he could be a valuable player for the Cavaliers at center as he earned a starting spot. He averages 9 points 10 rebounds a game since being added to the starting lineup. The team is also expected to get all-star forward Kevin Love back from his injury before the playoffs begin. They are a working progress, but they are a team with chemistry now and no team is perfect.

Let the Madness Began This year’s March Madness college basketball tournament is now underway. The top four number 1 seeds in each region are Xavier, Virginia, Villanova, and Kansas. Just like every year there are bound to be upsets happening during the tournament. Most notably is the 12 seed over 5 seed upsets. This year’s 12 seeds are Davidson, South Dakota State, New Mexico State, and Murray State. This year’s 5 seeds are Kentucky, West Virginia, Clemson, and Ohio State. These teams need to bring their A game and be prepared in order to not fall victim to the 12vs5 curse. The Midwest region will open up game play here in Pittsburgh at PPG Paints arena.

What If By Julie Hebert Â

Asking "what if this" and "what if that", No good has ever come. The questions that these words ask, Are not as good as some. "What if" really means the same, As doubting what you've done. You can't go back and change the past, What's done is what is done! "What if" also can be the words, Spoke of thee unsure. It's just like those who speak the words, I'll try, instead of sure. Saying words of so little power, Is a wasted pun. Not to mention the uncertainty, You share with everyone. Next time you find the words "what if" Crossing your mind. Replace them with more certain words, Like "we should do" or "we should find". The worst thing any of us can do is, Doubt ourselves from the start. So think about the words you use, And choose words that make you sound smart.
