BSU Black History Month Museum Members of the Black Student Union showed off their creativity and passion for Black History as they turned our library into a makeshift museum full of Black knowledge and Black accomplishments. The museum perfectly timelines the history of African Americans. From the days when Blacks were Kings and Queens in Africa, through the times of Slavery in America, through the reconstruction time period after slavery where Blacks were still fighting segregation and for equal rights of their white counterparts to modern day where some would argue that some issues may be reverting back to old times instead of progressing forward. If you haven’t had a chance to stop in and look around you really should do so. Spending about 10 to 15 minutes in there would enlighten you to things you may have not known or at that very least help increase the knowledge you already have about specific things. Excellent job BSU

Inaugural African American History Quiz Bowl

Seniors Delores Jetter, James Shaw, Nature Askew, and Zuriel Harris-Scott successfully competed in the first African American History Quiz Bowl. The competition organized by Mrs. Ferguson, the BSU, and Key Club was held at CCAC Northside campus. Our students won first place honors defeating teams from City High Charter School and Propel High School. The competition was tight, with each school doing very well in the individual rounds and in the speed rounds. In case you missed it or want to re-watch the competition, you can go to our school website at www.upcs.net and watch it or search it up on youtube. Be sure you give a congratulations to our winners and we look forward to defending our title next year‌

50th Anniversary of ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’

The 50th anniversary of the first national broadcast of ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’ was on Monday, Feb. 19th. Fred Rogers Company CEO Paul Seifken says the show’s themes of love and acceptance continue for a new generation with “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.” The show is produced in Pittsburgh and is the number one show on PBS Kids among young and adolescent children. The week of Feb. 27, PBS will air new “Daniel Tiger” episodes back-to-back with the “Mister Rogers” shows that inspired them. PBS is also airing a special on March 6 at 8 p.m., which will be hosted by Michael Keaton.

Pittsburgh Zoo closed because of power outage The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium temporarily closed for a day due to a power outage. Zoo spokeswoman Tracy Gray says the facility uses backup generators to run its aquariums and otherwise keep animals warm when the power goes down in colder weather. Power was restored the following morning. The outage affected the zoo and about 700 other Duquesne Light customers. Utility spokeswoman Jessica Rock says a transformer failed and had to be replaced.

No KFC for the UK If you like eating KFC, you should be happy to not live in the United Kingdom. The UK is currently under a short supply of KFC Chicken. Yes chicken, KFC has been forced to temporarily close most of its UK outlets after problems with a new delivery contract led to a chicken shortage. A total of 562 KFC outlets remained shut following a weekend of disruption that peaked on Sunday night at 646 closures. KFC published a list of only 338 of its 900 stores that were still open on Monday night. Many were offering a limited menu and restricted opening hours. In a statement KFC blamed the chicken shortage on a contract with delivery company DHL. “We’ve brought a new delivery partner on board, but they’ve had a couple of teething problems – getting fresh chicken out to 900 restaurants across the country is pretty complex,” it said.

Sports and Clubs 2018 NBA All-Star Game ratings down slightly from last year A new format for the NBA All-Star Game had a negligible impact on television ratings. Total viewership for the game was down slightly compared to last year, although it improved over 2014, the previous time the league's midseason showcase faced competition from the Winter Olympics. Turner Sports announced that the game drew an average of 7.7 million viewers on TNT. Last year's game attracted an average of 7.8 million viewers. In 2014 during the Sochi Olympics, an average of 7.5 million people watched the NBA's best at the All-Star Game. This year's game abandoned the traditional Eastversus-West format in favor of teams selected by superstars LeBron James and Stephen Curry. James' team won 148-145 in an uncommonly competitive matchup that featured better effort on defense. Turner said the ratings improved among key demographics, including people between ages 18 and 34, and that video views on social media channels were up 37 percent compared to 2017. Some of the reason for the ratings being down may have been due to the lack effort and defense during last years All Star Game. The game was painful to watch with none of the “superstar” players showing any effort on defense allowing players to score at will. The final score of that game was 192 to 182 with the West team winning. Anthony Davis was the MVP scoring 52 points. The new format for this year’s game was a much better product and much more competitive, which should help rejuvenate the watching audience for next year.

Pittsburgh native John-Henry Krueger wins Olympic Medal Yinz better believe it! Pittsburgh's own John Henry Krueger breaks America's individual speed skating medal drought with silver in the 1000m. Krueger finished second behind Canada’s Samuel Girard in a thrilling final despite being the lowest-ranked skater going into the race. Krueger’s win was the United States' first individual speed skating medal since 2010. Krueger's road to the Olympic podium has been a long one. In 2009, Krueger was plagued with an illness throughout the Olympic Trials that led him to miss out on the Sochi Games. Still at a very young 22 years of old, Krueger could be back in 4 years to skate again for another medal, hopefully this time a gold one.

USA Women’s Hockey redeems themselves and win gold

On Thursday in Pyeongchang, the USA Women’s Hockey team removed a 20 year weight off their shoulders by winning an Olympic gold medal. Team USA defeated Canada, 3-2, in a thrilling shootout win to earn their first gold medal. It was the third consecutive Olympics in which the American and Canadian women faced off in the finals, with Canada winning Gold each time. It couldn’t be scripted better that this historic win came on the 38th anniversary of the “Miracle on Ice” where the Men’s US Hockey teams upset defeat of the dominate Soviet Union Hockey team in Lake Placid.

Entertainment Black Panther Movie Review

Chadwick Boseman once again impresses as the titular hero, T’Challa, encapsulating the swagger and reverence of the character perfectly. His chemistry with both Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia and Letitia Wright’s Shuri is organic and real. Michael B. Jordan’s Erik Killmonger is one of the best villains in the MCU. Continuing the angle taken with Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming, this character is relatable, angry, and extremely realistic. He has understandable motives and aspirations that give this film more depth than most good versus evil struggles in the MCU. While it does not overtly express its angle, the film serves as an appropriate social commentary that comes at exactly the right time. This type of social commentary has only previously been apparent in Marvel’s Netflix shows, so it is refreshing to see this critical focus appear in a feature film. It may make some people uncomfortable or even angry, but this movie addresses a topic in society that needs to be discussed. Overall, this is a great movie. It’s action-packed and fun without relying on crippling quips and jokes like previous Marvel movies. The attention to detail is apparent throughout, and the cultural representation in the cast, costumes, and sets is phenomenal. I give it a 9.8 out of 10.

Student & Staff Submissions Send A Drop Of Kindness

It Couldn't Be Done

Send a drop of kindness, And see a happy face. A drop of kindness goes real far, It may even reach outer space.

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done But he with a chuckle replied That "maybe it couldn't," but he would be one Who wouldn't say so till he'd tried. So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin On his face. If he worried he hid it. He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn’t be done, and he did it! Somebody scoffed: "Oh, you’ll never do that; At least no one ever has done it;" But he took off his coat and he took off his hat And the first thing we knew he'd begun it. With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin, Without any doubting or quiddit, He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn't be done, and he did it. There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done, There are thousands to prophesy failure, There are thousands to point out to you one by one, The dangers that wait to assail you. But just buckle in with a bit of a grin, Just take off your coat and go to it; Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing That "cannot be done," and you'll do it.

Send a drop of love, And feel a loving embrace. It feels so good to feel like, You are in the right place. Send a drop of hope, But be that shinning star. Hope is wonderful to have, But sometimes you can't sit away so far. Send a drop of faith, With a single prayer. And God will show the way, As faith is always there.
