November 21, 2017 Homecoming 2017 A huge success
The students and staff responsible for organizing this year’s homecoming dance did an excellent job. From the decorations, to the music, to the coat check, and security. They all deserve lots of credit for turning this into an unforgettable night. Equally impressive was how dapper and eloquent all of the students in attendance were. For the young ladies, their gowns were beautiful and hair and makeup done flawlessly. The young men, shined in tailored fitted attire matching the latest fashion trends with a classical professional feel. The evening capped off the night with the crowning of the 2017-2018 homecoming king and queen, seniors Da’Shaun Dumas, and TiKeya James. Congratulations on the honor of being selected. Also congratulations to everyone selected to the royal court.
Building School Spirit Renovations to the building continues to transform it into an actual school feel. The new addition of all the decal and logos are taking students by surprise and assisting in increasing their school pride. There’s no doubt that the presence of these messages of staying on the Panther P.A.T.H is having some effect on school moral and student participation. I think I can speak for many students when I say, Can’t wait to see what comes next. #PantherPride
A Foggy Good Time The middle school students, enjoyed their first ever Sadie Hawkins dance sponsored by Mrs. Ferguson and the Black Student Union. Staff and students were able to combine their efforts to turn the school cafeteria into a fall festival wonderland equipped with strobe lights, fog machines, and a picture corner. The students enjoyed every moment of the event, dancing the evening away to the sounds courteous of senior, DJ Deasia Reed. Not even a fire alarm going off in the middle of the event could stop these students from partying on, as many of them waited outside the school until the fired department was able to come and shut the fire alarm off. That’s what I call having a foggy good time…
World/Local News Texas Church Shooting On November 5 at approximately 11:20 a.m. The US suffered through yet another mass shooting. This mass shooting happened at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. The gunman was not a terrorist, an illegal immigrant, or legal immigrant. He was a 26 year old ex member of the military, Devin Patrick Kelley. Wearing a black tactical ballistic vest and a black facemask with a white skull, armed with over 50 magazines of bullets, Kelley opened fire on church goers. He killed 26 people and injured 20 others including children and infants. A Good Samaritan near the church managed to shot Kelley, twice as he was exiting the church. The shots wounded Kelley and forced him to stop shooting and flee the scene. Kelley would eventually fatally shot himself minutes later. In addition to all the chaos surrounding this act of violence, there is now controversy over how Kelley was able to obtain firearms, when he has a past conviction record from his time in the Air Force and was committed to a mental health facility. Transgender Congresswoman Danica Roem is the first transgender person to be elected in Virginia House of Delegates. She is also a Democrat. She defeated a member that has been there for 13 terms. She used to be a newspaper reporter. Roem is the only openly transgender politician. She won 54% of the vote in 2016. She was sworn in January. She’s one of the second openly transgender congresswoman next to Stacie Laughton who just won New Hampshire. Nice to know the world is changing thanks to people like Danica Roem. By: Marcia Hill
Terminally Ill Nine-Year-Old Hopes for Christmas Cards Jacob Thompson did not live to see Christmas. As he passed away on November 19th from his battle with cancer. Jacob was however able to bring together a whole nation when his plea for receiving Christmas cards went viral and he received over thousands of cards from people all over the world. Jacob received cards from celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ellen, Peyton Manning, and even one from former first lady Michelle Obama. Jacob’s unfortunate and untimely death was over shadowed and celebrated by the little time he had alive. Jacob and his family lived every day to the fullest and was always filled with happiness and joy. By: Breanna Ewell
Happy Thanksgiving Thanksgiving Day is a holiday celebrated in The U.S, Canada, The Caribbean Islands, and Liberia. It started as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Some festivals occur in Germany and Japan. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the U.S. It is celebrated as a secular holiday. Thanksgiving was started in the U.S. in 1621 from just a harvest. That was just my little piece of information I wanted to give about Thanksgiving. Everyone have a great Thanksgiving and spend time with your family! EAT GOOD!! By: Taylor Dotson
Sports and Clubs UCLA or China
Liangelo Ball and two of his UCLA mens basketball teammates were arrested in china while on a basketball trip there to play a preseason basketball game against Georgia Tech. The three students allegedly stole from three high end fashion stores and were caught on camera trying to steal from a 4th store. The three players were detained by police for trying to steal sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton boutique. Liangelo and the other two players were held back in China and unable to leave the country when the rest of their team and coaches boarded a flight back to America. So why would someone with such a high profile as Liangelo ball who was a star player for Chino Hills basketball team. And is the older brother of number two overall NBA draft pick Lonzo Ball. You would think he would be able to afford the items he was accused of stealing. His father Lavar Ball tried to downplay the seriousness of the situation to the press when asked about what he thought about his son being detained for stealing. I imagine that although Lavar didn’t’ show disappointment in public about his son, in private he probably expressed his disappointment a little more. Only time will tell what UCLA will do with Liangelo and the other two players. By: mikayla hall
WPIAL Madness This past weekend there were several high school playoff football games happening around the city. There were several of the usual teams in contention for titles including, Gateway, Steel Valley, Pine-Richland and Jeannette just to name a few. But perhaps the most interesting game of the entire playoffs was the game between Aliquippa and Quaker Valley. The game ended in a 2-0 win for Quaker Valley who upset heavily favored Aliquippa. The only score of the game came when A Quaker Valley defender tackled an Aliquippa runner in the endzone for a safety. This game was very bizarre statistically because Aliquippa had one just about every statistical category including passing yards. Quaker Valley had 0 passing yards the entire game and only 55 yards rushing but somehow found a way to pull off the upset win. That somehow was by defense Quaker Valley won the turnover battle forcing three interceptions, and four sacks. The old saying Defense wins championships, was in full effect for Quaker Valley. It will no doubt be a game either team will ever forget.

Student & Staff Submissions VEGANISM What is Veganism you ask? There are many different definitions of veganism. Like not eating or using animal products or “What hippies do ¨. My name is Fatimah and I am here to tell you what Veganism is to me.
Minem Mineta School Uniform by Malique Lewis-Brown
To me Veganism is saving the world. Not only is it beneficial to animals but it's beneficial to your health. You’re cleansing your body of bad toxins. It is scientifically proven that veganism can give you a better perspective on things. You must be thinking “But all vegans eat are vegetables ¨, WRONG! We eat so much more than that we eat fruits, beans, veggies, potatoes, whole grain noodles, and pizza (yes there is vegan pizza). One of my favorite places to eat is Honey Grow in East Liberty there food is amazing! I also like eating and shopping at the Food Coop (there food is delish!) We also get our nutrients and vitamins from things like Chia seeds, nutritional yeast, tofu, vegan fake meats and fiber bars. Here are some Vegan food places in Pittsburgh (vegan options): Spak Bros Pizza Food Coop Honey Grow Double Wide Grille By: Fatimah Bisiryu
Thug Equals Love by Ja’Myah Scott The toughest thing to do is lose someone close to you that was your fault. I never thought that it would go this far, never thought that I slip up on it, and I never thought it would end like this. “Dae Dae get the f*** up or you're going to miss the school bus and I ain’t giving you bus fare already don’t have enough for my own.” Mama Noon Said already getting an attitude. He woke up with a bed full of sweat with a tank top and some American eagle boxers with a hole in it. “Alright I am up dang ma.” Dae dae said tired and angry. He climbed out the bed like an old man with back issues. Got some clothes from the dirty pile put some deodorant and went into the kitchen with his siblings sitting in the chairs and his mom by the sink smoking a cigarette. “Hey Daesh Daesh.” His little sister said. “Hey lil sis.” He answered back. Dae dae always took care of his sister even with his pockets empty, He may seem like a responsible person like I am describing him to you but he’s not so don’t get any ideas. He took his toast put it in his mouth and left. They lived in a little apartment not too far away from the projects He goes to Slippery Rose High School with all the kids from the hood so it isn’t no difference from living in it when you're forced to see the violence in the school. “Hey Dae dae wanna walk to school together.” Selena said blushing. “Sure come on and walk fast I am not trying to be late.” Dae dae said in a hurry. As you can see Selena has had a crush on Dae dae ever since they were kids Dae dae kind of say her as a best friend but Selena thought of something more.“Did you do the civics homework?” Dae dae said.“Yeah you need it.” Selena asked him. “Yeah thanks bro.” He said grinning hard. She loved when he smiled, she even loved when he laughed it was like magic talking to him and being close. “Skrrrrrrrr “the car went. A Mexican shouted “Yo Dae dae.” Dae dae put Selina behind him, she was so scared she tightly grabbed his hoody. “Get in the car Mijo.” He said with an Uzi in his hand. To be continued ….
