How do we inspire the next gene of engineers? The UK holds a global reputation for engineering excellence, with our nation’s civil and structural engineering services in high demand worldwide. However, the profession has come to a crossroads, or rather a skills gap, with fewer than 10% of UK graduates currently pursuing a career in engineering. It’s a concerning issue and one which, if left unaddressed, runs the risk of damaging our standing within the global construction sector and losing a niche but highly lucrative revenue stream, both at home and abroad. The good news is that we have the tools and resources to tackle this problem and build a pipeline of talent to help maintain our international position. However, the road to recovery will not be without its challenges. Crucially, it will require current practitioners to step up and strike down many false perceptions around engineering, which have gained traction amongst school pupils, teachers, and parents over the past few decades. First and foremost, we need to break the current stigma surrounding a career in engineering. This has manifested itself since the 90s as the education system sought to place more people in university and greater emphasis on traditional ‘white collar’ qualifications. Effectively, engineering was seen by some as a ‘blue collar’ choice with few prospects hence not promoted as a profession. This could not be further from the truth for a profession that plays a vital role in designing and constructing the built environment we rely on, daily. Unfortunately, much of this narrative has been lost,

eration
with the ‘engineer’ role erroneously related to someone who fixes and maintains photocopiers and washing machines. This is to take a very narrow view and it’s still disseminated through the education system. It’s little wonder we’re finding it harder than ever to attract the brightest and the best. Many teachers still lack knowledge about engineering careers, leaving students unaware of their potential to excel in this dynamic field, so we urgently need a root and branch shift in cultural attitudes, and it all begins with early school engagement. If we’re going to affect real change, then engineering must be embedded into the mainstream curriculum. After all, it bridges the gap between theoretical subjects and their practical applications, engaging students and offering a clearer career path. It’s also time for the practitioners themselves to do more to support the initiatives led by the Institution of Civil Engineers and Institution of Structural Engineers to help spread the word about civil and structural engineering careers to young people, parents and teachers and inspire the next wave of talent. It’s something we’ve witnessed first-hand at Perega where we’ve been extensively involved with our local education networks to showcase the benefits of a career in engineering. It’s not just at the highest level, we’ve encouraged engineers at every stage within the business to participate. Crucially, this holistic approach makes the process more relatable, not only showing prospective, ambitious, and impressionable candidates where they can go but also how to get there; it maps out a clear route to success. We also need to bang the apprenticeship drum a lot louder. At Perega a number of our civil and structural engineers have gone through our apprenticeship scheme offering hands-on experience from age 16. Yet too many bright young minds only discover these opportunities late into their university degrees, which is unfortunate
as this delayed exposure means it will take longer to bring talent online. Women also remain woefully underrepresented in STEM fields, which also accounts for the currently small talent pool. Whilst there’s plenty of crossindustry activity and government initiatives underway dedicated to getting more young women into construction, inspiring the next generation requires more. For example, The Women’s Engineering Society’s ‘Lottie Tour’, showcases engineering to young girls and offers clear advice on how to get into the profession from an early age. It’s a remarkable initiative, leveraging social media to transform perceptions and inspire the female engineers of the future. It’s safe to say there’s no shortage of jobs in the sector, with 1 in 4 UK job posts for engineering roles1, however, we need skilled professionals to fill them, especially as the existing workforce gets greyer with fewer school leavers or graduates to replace them. Ultimately, getting youngsters to pursue these jobs requires improved communication, accessible routes, and diverse workplaces. To achieve this end, we must evolve society’s and our outlook to better attract untapped talent, securing a brighter future for the profession and maintaining the UK’s position as a centre for engineering excellence. KYOCERA AVX is a renowned brand, created as a result of a merger of two companies which had been manufacturing electronic components for decades. Among other things, the supplier offers a wide selection of tantalum capacitors, i.e. components related to electrolytic capacitors, whose electrodes are made with the use of tantalum and its oxide – resulting in higher durability and improved mechanical strength. Their rated voltage ranges from 6.3 V to 50 V DC. At TME, you can find variants with capacitance of 0.1 µF to 220 µF (with ±10% or ±20% tolerance). Notably, the products boast a wide thermal tolerance of -55 to 125°C. The capacitor’s body has been coated with a thick layer of synthetic resin (which is flame retardant), ensuring high security and mechanical strength of the components. SMD tantalum capacitor The majority of the products presented here are SMD components, designed for surface mounting. KYOCERA AVX divided them into a number of series, according to their specific applications. TPME687M006R0018 The TPM capacitors exhibit ultra-low ESR.
Voltage converters and drivers Most of the manufacturer’s products included in the TME catalogue are intended for voltage converter circuits (mainly DC/DC). This is one of the typical applications of tantalum capacitors. In our offering, you can find components designed for voltage regulators of low (the F93 series), medium (the F91 and TPS series) and relatively high power: the TPC and TPM series (the latter exhibits ultra-low ESR and the operating temperature of up to 125°C). For such applications, we also recommend using the TAJ series – the most versatile group of SMD capacitors from KYOCERA AVX, which can operate at even 50 V DC and display capacitance from 1 µF to 1 mF.
Precision electronics The components can also be widely applied in compact electronics, i.e. portable consumer devices (smartphones, e-readers, tablets, etc.). Many KYOCERA AVX products are small or housed in special packages, enabling you to build miniature microprocessor systems, motors or drivers. Such components belong to the F72, F95, TLC and TLJ series. The TLN low-profile capacitors and the truly miniature TAC capacitors (available in 0603 and 0805 package sizes) are certainly worthy of your attention. In the manufacturer’s offering, you can also find components which conform to the requirements of small USB devices (the F92 series). Thermal resistance It is also worth mentioning the capacitors with a very wide thermal tolerance, reaching up to 175°C (selected variants). These solutions are intended for the most demanding applications in the automotive and aviation sectors as well as in
industrial circuits, i.e. wherever high resistance to environmental factors is needed. Such capacitors are included in the THJ, TRJ and TRM series. Hybrid components What is more, the manufacturer also offers hybrid capacitors, specifically polymer tantalum capacitors (the F38 series). Such a structure makes it possible to create compact capacitors (in 0603, 0805 package sizes, according to the imperial system) which exhibit high efficiency and are perfectly adapted to tasks such as microprocessor or SoC circuit (System on Chip) decoupling in smartphones, tablets and other small electronic devices. Optimised UV-Visible lens for crime scene investigation
The Model 228 lens from Resolve Optics has become an industry standard for Reflected Ultraviolet Imaging Systems (RUVIS) used to detect fingerprints or bloodstains undiscovered during an initial crime scene investigation. Collection of evidence, after a crime has been committed, is essential to establish facts associated with the crime and identify potential suspects. Traditionally law enforcement officials have relied on their eyesight and evidence collection methods, such as lifting fingerprints with tape, which are prone to errors or omissions. Deltek’s Digital Trends Unwrapped: Tech Powering Architecture and Engineering (A&E) Project Success in 2024 report reveals that 40% of A&E firms believe that investing in new technologies is key to profitability in 2024 As one in five firms don’t have a clear defined strategy for achieving growth, technology adoption ambitions lead the way for next twelve months Nine in 10 firms believe that if they fail to make significant progress on their digital transformation journey, they will lose market share.
A new report from Deltek, the leading global provider of software and solutions for project-based businesses, has uncovered that while almost a fifth (18%) of architecture and engineering (A&E) firms do not having a clearly defined strategy for achieving steady growth, digital transformation will help unlock growth and profitability in 2024. The report, Deltek’s Digital Trends Unwrapped: Tech Powering Architecture and Engineering Project Success in 2024, finds that 40% of A&E businesses believe that the key to building long term resilience in this fastmoving macro-economic environment is investing in new technologies – with IT infrastructure investment the biggest growth opportunity for engineering firms (44%). Currently, 42% of engineering and 33% of architecture firms describe themselves at an ‘advanced’ or ‘mature’ phase of their digital transformation journey. Where firms aren’t in this phase, there is still an ambition to implement digital transformation. Almost one in four (38%) of A&E firms state that they’re in an exploratory phase of their journey. The report reveals that firms understand the importance of digital transformation on their bottom line. PostCovid, there has been a global economic downturn, but the majority of firms (92%) believe that if they make significant progress in their digital transformation, they will not lose out on market share. However, despite a strong appetite towards using digital transformation to rejuvenate the market, firms are realistic about timelines. Technology can significantly aid growth and profitability by helping firms understand their businesses better and make informed decisions based on real-time insights. One area likely to be prioritized is using technology in how KPIs are tracked and measured. Currently, confidence is low in this area, with over a quarter (26%) of A&E firms saying they track operating profit ‘badly’, while 18% say the same for tracking

project profitability. Through better visibility provided by technology, these metrics can be more easily tracked and KPIs adjusted to ensure projects stay on track and remain profitable. Neil Davidson, Group Vice President, Professional Services Sector at Deltek, said: “It’s reassuring that so many firms connect that digital transformation is intrinsically linked to long term resilience. With the right investment strategies, firms can make the most of limited resources while still driving their business forward in a way that aligns with a long-term strategy. Digital transformation, including AI adoption, does not happen overnight. Implementing the right technology tools, proven in the industry, will secure the insights and streamlined processes, invaluable to growth in the architecture and engineering industries.” The report also revealed new priorities for firms. Nearly sixty percent (58%) of A&E firms surveyed believe that social responsibility should be at least equally important to their company as its profits are, while one in four (25%) said that, compared to the start of 2022, their firms are placing significantly more importance on Corporate Social Responsibility and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) issues.

Integrating a legacy system with Industry 4.0 often requires updating networked data communications. Many legacy systems use OPC DA, while the protocol of choice for Industry 4.0 has become OPC UA. Integrating OPC DA with OPC UA is a high priority moving forward. A good tool for this is OPC DA/UA gateway middleware. Here are five things to look for when evaluating OPC gateway software: 1. Multiple connections - Gateway middleware should be able to connect to any number of data sources and provide the resulting data to any number of users. 2. Integrated data set Ideally, the data from any of the various sources should be available to any of the connected clients. There should be no need for one-to-one connections. 3. Server and client capabilities for both OPC DA and UA - Some systems may offer an OPC DA server interface, and require an OPC UA client to connect to it. Others may have an OPC DA client that needs data from an OPC UA server. Having both gives you more flexibility. 4. Maintaining the data model - As the data passes through the system, you don’t want to flatten the data hierarchy. A good DA/UA gateway will preserve the data structure from the DA side and reproduce it, as much as possible, in OPC UA. 5. The degree of protection against solid contaminants is indicated with a number from zero to six. A higher number indicates a higher level of protection against finer contaminants. In the case of the liquids, the degree of protection against ingress is indicated with a number from zero to nine.
