Ismael López James Panter. Desde el Mar. Up Suping

We are on the beach of Somo, August 21 of 2021, after a year and a half with no competition in northern Spain due to this global pandemic. We cannot imagine a more idyllic place to do a Beach Race and after the cancellation of the Suances race. But since these years are different, it couldn’t be less. And we could already predict from the weather reports that there would not be much swell, which we could not imagine a sea as calm as the one we found first thing in the morning when we arrived the beach. Seeing the sea like this on the beach of Somo is very unusual and I have rarely seen it, but when the God Neptune does not want there to be movement, we cannot do otherwise. So, in the end it became a more technical race than Beach Race.

The race was organized by heats, in which the first 8 classified were classified for the final and there was a repechage to complete the starting grid of the final. All categories were hotly contested. As the hours of competition passed and the sleeves followed each other, a little wind started to rise as the tide rose and the beach increased its water level.

In addition to the Stand Up Paddle modality, the Cantabrian Surf Federation decided to do the same circuit to carry out a Prone race, which left no one indifferent and many people who were in the area did not hesitate to stay as spectators and enjoy the show. But let’s go to the trouble we are going to tell you the show that the competitors gave in Stand Up Paddle.

In the Elite category, Fernando Pérez and Antonio Morillo from Cádiz finished first and second, accompanied by Rafa Sirvent from Alicante, closely followed by Ben Laurence who gave a superiority recital in the first round, qualifying in the first position.

In the Master category, Salva Mora was in the first position, in turn, remaining in fifth place in the general classification and thus continue to show that the Master category continues to have a lot of potential among its members, he was followed by Iker Barbarrubio and Oscar Ruiz. In the Master 50 category, how could it be otherwise and this year we are used to it, Daniel Parres was the winner of the test followed by Augusto García and Enrique Bizcocho.

In the female category, the elite final and the sub 18, it was carried out with a distance of 30 seconds between start and start. The winner in the Elite category was Esperanza Barrera, second place went to Laura Quetglas and to finish the podium Izaskun Martin. But in the general classification, it was not like that and although there was a 30 seconds disadvantage between categories, the two U18s Duna Gordillo came in second place and in the global time calculation, he came just 3 seconds behind Esperanza Barrera. And Amaia Mellado was not far behind, and apart from her second place in her category, she also managed to rise to fifth in the general classification.

In the Master 40 and 50 female categories there was very little participation, but not for that they gave everything and the times were very tight, with Master 40 Nines Alonso in first position and in Master 50 in first place Silvia Canudas and in second place Eva Ruiz .

And the race of the day arrived, the race that gave more spectacle and more emotion until the finish line. From the beginning, it was a fight between Manuel Hoyuela and Lucas Simoncelli that distanced themselves from the rest from the first buoy and it was a power to a power struggle that in the end was decided at the finish line, which had to be reviewed because it was so tight that they came very close together. The winner was Lucas followed by Manuel and a little behind the third place went to Antonio Serrera, demonstrating the great year of evolution that he has been taking and that he will be among the best next year.

And we need to summarize for the little ones, our future in Stand up Paddle in our country. In the female SU16 category, and note these names for next season, because they will be repeated in many of the races that are held, first place went to Elene Etxeberria, second place for Ana Marta and third place from Andalusian lands Ainhoa Rivas. And in SUB14 the podium went to Alexia Soto in the first place, Ines Blin in second place and Bianca Toncelli in third place.

In the men’s SU16 category, consecrating himself in the great season that he has been taking in this year 2021, Ivan de Frutos took first place, Joan García rose to the second position and closing with third place went to Augusto García. In the men’s SUB14 the first place went to Ciro Molla, second place for Pablo Martínez and third place for Pablo Carbonell. In the female category, there were no participants under 14 years of age, but in the male category there were and in the male SUB12, the first place went to Luca Boni followed by Aetz Ibarloza. And to finalize the ranking in the SUB10 category, the first place went to Joan Gelabert and the second place went to Tomas Blin.

Thanks to Pedro Gutiérrez, director of the Spanish Beach Race Championship of the Spanish Surf Federation for organizing it in record time, and to all the collaborating brands for making it a reality. Surely next year Neptune will roar again in the next edition and the show will not be missing.
