Cooper Landing Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center
Dear Members, Spring is in the air. It’s too early for spring but the weather is toying with us so it is coming, fingers crossed, early. Our Upper Kenai River Guide is at the printers and we are going to proudly display it in many locations in all the hot spots for tourists and local vacationers. May 2022 be a banner year for all our members and community. Thank you for all your support! Last month, we have sent out a survey to see if there was any interest in having Cooper Landing Drift Boat Regatta this year. Based on the positive feedback we received from the survey, we decided at our last meeting, on February 24th, to host the Regatta. Mark your calendars for May 21, 2022. More information will be available shortly. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback in our survey. St Patrick’s Day is approaching, so wear your green, enjoy a corn beef and cabbage dinner, and watch out for leprechauns. Enjoy the sunshine! Thank you, Cheryle James & Your Chamber Board

Cooper Landing Community Club Does this warmer weather make anyone else feel like Spring is approaching faster than it should? The activities and to-do lists sure make it seem like summer is right around the corner! The first activity on the Community Club’s to-do list is to thank Andy Kloppe for doing an outstanding job with the maintenance at the Hall and for being a great RV host over the years. He is moving on and sure will be missed! That brings us to the second task of finding someone to fill both the Maintenance Position and the RV Host Position. A brief description follows and the application will be posted on the Crier (or contact cooperlandingcommunityclub@gmail.com) for more info. The Maintenance Position- we are seeking an individual to perform a variety of basic facility maintenance tasks and routine inspections, and maintain records of maintenance issues. Applicant must hold a current Alaska Business License and will be paid hourly as needed. The RV Host Position- we are seeking an individual or individuals to live on property from May through September. Duties include daily opening of the driveway gate by 8:00 a.m. and closing the gate by 10:00 p.m. (later if necessary due to activity at hall), removing trash, watering flowers and plants, weed whipping, picking up limbs and debris, enforcing no overnight camping and other hall rules, stocking toilet paper in outhouse, and contacting board members if anything needs fixed or cared for. This position comes with both a water and electric hook-up and internet. We are also looking for volunteers for the Softball Tournament, items for the silent auction, and volunteers to help with the Spring Hall Clean-up Firewise Event. As always look for more info in the Crier or contact us at cooperlandingcommunityclub@gmail.com. See you at our next meeting on March 24th via Zoom!

Cooper Landing Lynx News
March 2022
Fun February February has been a busy month at school. Fourth and sixth grade students have been studying the human brain and how different parts of the brain work together. To see how the right brain works compared to the left brain they have been drawing images upside down. Using a shading scale from light to dark, students have been practicing drawing shapes and shadows to create realistic images. These students have also been learning about the United States and how to use political and topographic maps. They assembled a large scale map of the US and are labeling the physical features and popular areas of interest. First through third graders are learning about simply machines. They have been building different types of machine through K’nex. The wheelbarrow and the catapult were two of their favorite to design and write about. They were also fascinated while watching a sheep heart and eye be dissected by Cooper (10th grade) for his anatomy and physiology class. Their expressions through the dissection process were priceless. The students love to draw and sketch and the improvement in their techniques is easily seen from the beginning of the school year. We also are continuing with our Archery Program. Grades 4-10 will compete virtually against other students in Alaska. First through third graders learn the basic skills associated with archery and they are surprisingly good.

Our annual PE program at Alyeska Ski Resort started this year on February first. Boy,what an epic year it has been! With over 600 inches of snow in Girdwood, this winter has been an awesome year to hit the slopes. Every Tuesday, for five weeks, we travel to the resort and students take two-hour lessons with certified ski and snowboard instructors. So far this year, every Tuesday has been a powder day. Students have had the added challenge of learning how to handle the powder. After lessons we take a quick snack break and then free ski as a group until the mountain closes at 5:30 pm. By the end of the day we are all worn out! Some of the students’ favorite trails include Waterfall, Canyonland, Dogleg, Gummy Worm, Silvertip, and the Terrain Park. It is a lot of work for all of the chaperones as we try to keep up with the students who go fast and have no fear. We have enjoyed seeing other locals from Cooper Landing out there skiing too!
