Citizen Forester 10th Class
In February, we welcomed our 10th class of Citizen Foresters to the Up With Trees family. At 32 students, our largest class to date, we filled the room to help Tulsa County citizens learn about the urban forest we live in, how to care for trees in their own backyard, and encouraged them to get outside to make an impact in the community. This four-part program focuses on the P’s of Trees: Planning, Planting, Preserving, and Promoting. Each class opportunity is led by local arborists, and the field training opportunities range from soil analysis to planting and

pruning trees. Recent Citizen Forester graduate, Emma Clayman said, “It has surprised me how often the information I learned in [the] Citizen Forester [program] has had useful application in my daily life! I enjoy looking at and thinking about trees more now than ever before, mostly because I have
some background knowledge to assess growth patterns, health, and compatibility of trees with their environment. I recommend the Citizen Forester class to anyone with an interest in the proper planting of trees and enhancing green spaces.” Learn more about the program at UPWITHTREES.org. /citizenforester

WELCOME
FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR STEVE GRANTHAM Tulsa has developed at an incredible rate over the past 43 years aided by our community’s ability to come together in times of need. From ReGreening Tulsa with 10,000 trees after the
devasting ice storm of 2007 to the maintenance efforts after this year’s swift and unexpected floods, our trees have witnessed it all. As our trees and organization grow stronger in
the face of such obstacles, we want to thank you for your continual support and generosity.
As a native Tulsan, I am grateful for the green spaces we have access to in our community. Many cities do not have the lush landscape of trees that we are so lucky to have across our great city. Up With Trees is dedicated to making Tulsa a beautiful place to live and this helps our city thrive. As a board member, I am grateful to be a part of an organization that helps draw people to our city through the urban forest Up With Trees continues to plant and maintain. - Laura Bryant, Board Member

CURRENT 61ST STREET CORRIDOR PLANTING The corridor on 61st Street, from Riverside Drive to Lewis Avenue, is looking more beautiful these days thanks to the donations from H.A. & Mary K. Chapman Charitable Trust, Keep Oklahoma Beautiful, Paul Woodul, and Bonnie Klein. In addition to the generous monetary donations, we welcomed 23 volunteers who collectively volunteered 69 hours to plant 105 new trees. These trees created a beautiful passageway and, once they are fully grown, will offer a wonderful amount of shade for cars and pedestrians. Learn more about programs and projects at UPWITHTREES.org.
OAKLAWN CEMETERY FAST FACTS 147 Trees Assessed 74 Trees Pruned 50+ Trees To Be Planted 19 Trees To Be Replaced
OAKLAWN CEMETEREY REVITILIZATION In partnership with a longtime Up With Trees supporter and Tulsa citizen, the revitalization of Oaklawn Cemetery, Tulsa’s oldest existing cemetery, has begun. This spring, Up With Trees assessed the health of 147 trees spanning across twenty acres. The upcoming year will include a significant amount of cleanup and maintenance, along with several tree plantings.
This revitalization will provide multiple economic, environmental, and social benefits for the community. In addition to these benefits, it will pay tribute to all who are buried throughout the grounds. The cleanup is underway and plantings will take place later this fall. We look forward to completing this project with your help! For more information visit UPWITHTREES.org.

Last year, our volunteer family made a huge impact on Tulsa’s landscape, and we celebrated their many contributions at our Volunteer Honors Luncheon. Together, we are creating a healthier and more beautiful home. We cannot thank you and our award recipients enough for choosing to be a part of our Up With Trees family!
PLANNING AWARD STEWART SWAYZE
As a member on our board and committees, Stewart’s determined and creative spirit has left long-lasting impressions on our organization. His efforts on our Development and Marketing committees have grown our organization’s outreach, and with it, the impact we are able to have on our urban forest. Stewart is the first person in the room to share ideas and engages others in visualizing a greener and more beautiful Tulsa.
PROMOTING AWARD DANIELLE TERRIO

Each of these individuals have uniquely contributed to the mission of Up With Trees and formed a team deeply rooted in our family tree -- Team Costas. The Mayo Hotel 115 W 5th St, Tulsa, OK 74103 GreenLeafGala.org We are so excited to announce longtime Up With Trees supporters, Elizabeth Howell and Victoria Schulz, as our 2019 Green Leaf Gala Chairs! Victoria shared, “Tulsa is so fortunate to have Up With Trees. Up With Trees has helped in immeasurable ways to make Tulsa a unique and beautiful city. As we all know, trees make an area magical, as with Woodward Park, Turkey Mountain and one of my
favorites, the Midland Valley Trail. In each of these, it is the trees that make the areas what they are! Places each of us are grateful for in our Tulsa, in our city. “ Victoria and Elizabeth invite you to this year’s Green Leaf Gala: Planting Tulsa’s Legacy on October 4th, as we continue growing a beautiful urban forest for all Tulsans.
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT-
TULSA COMMUNITY COLLEGE TULSA ACHIEVES STUDENTS Over the last several years, Tulsa Community College (TCC) students have volunteered countless hours at Up With Trees through the Tulsa Achieves program. We are so grateful they have chosen to be a part of our organization. Students have had their hands in everything from planting trees to painting the iconic Up With Trees signs. Tim Fernandez, TCC Director of Tulsa Achieves, said, “Up With Trees is an agency that resonates with our students on many levels. I believe in particular because eco-friendly, sustainable efforts are a real concern of our traditional college age students.” We are truly excited to grow our relationship with TCC, and every student we meet through the Tulsa Achieves program, as we work towards growing a sustainable and more beautiful community through Tulsa’s urban
forest.
