EDITORIAL Este tiempo se puede medir en decibelios, los segundos son loops que aunque sean iguales, nunca parecen los mismos; las horas explosiones que nunca se repiten y los segundos notas que pasan directo a la mente. Cuando esto pasa, el verano ya llegó, el sudor corre rápido, más de 130 gotas por minuto. El cuerpo se empapa de mar y los oídos de música. Y no hay más remedio porque la atmósfera ya está completamente conformada, la sangre caliente bombea, la piel se encrespa, el sol pega y la brisa de mar refresca. Es por eso que este número lo dedicamos al sentimiento del verano, poniendo especial atención a los sonidos, las imágenes y los colores que la estación trae consigo. Esperamos que para todos este mes sea sujeto de las mejores catarsis del año, pero por sobre todo, deseamos que estallen con todas la sensaciones que este tiempo provoca.

This time can be measured in decibels, the seconds are loops which, even though they may be the same, always seem different; the hours explosions never repeated and the seconds notes that pass straight to the mind. When that happens, summer is upon us and the sweat runs rapidly, at more than 130 drops per minute. The body is wetted by the sea and the ears by music. And there is no other remedy because the atmosphere is now completely shaped, the hot blood boiling, the skin crawls, the sun shines and the sea breeze refreshes. We therefore decided to dedicate this issue to the summer, giving special attention to the sounds, the images and the colours brought by this season. We hope that this month brings the best catharsis of the year to all, but moreover, wish for an explosion of joy to go along with all of the summer sensations.

miguel orcal Desde la edad de piedra, el hombre ha intentado imitar su entorno a través de la pintura. En referencia al reciente renacimiento (si se le puede llamar así) de la pintura realista, hay quienes opinan acerca del fotorrealismo (basado en la fotografía para conseguir un tipo de pintura realista impersonal, con detalles precisos) como la corriente pictórica más destructiva de la imaginación, donde el pintor actúa más como artesano que como artista. Sin embargo hay quienes aún pensamos en la insequible competencia entre una foto y un cuadro; para muestra un botón. Miguel Orcal (28) reside en Barcelona desde hace 5 años, el mismo tiempo dedicado a la pintura; en su natal Lima (Perú) cursó estudios de cine y arte, especializándose en pintura en la Facultad de Bellas Artes en la Universidad de Barcelona. El año pasado realizó una exposición en “The Rent Shop Galley” y su obra fue seleccionada para presentarse en la expo de fin de año en la UB. También se pudo ver su obra en el Museo de Badalona el 13 de septiembre de 2007. Ever since the Stone Age, Man has tried to paint by imitating what he sees around him. In reference to the recent rebirth (if we can call it that) of realist painting, there are those who believe that photorealism (a type of photography used to achieve a kind of impersonal realist style of painting, with imprecise details) is perhaps the pictorial current which most repels imagination, making the painter act more like an artisan than as an artist. However, there are those who still think that a photo should never compete with a work of art, a case in point… Orcal (28) has been living in Barcelona for the last 5 years, the same amount of time he has dedicated himself to painting; in his Lima (Peru), he studied art and cinema, specialising in painting at the Facultad de Bellas Artes in Barcelona. Last year, he presented an exhibition at “The Rent Shop Galley”. His work was selected to be presented at the University of Barcelona’s end of year exhibition, and also at the Badalona Museum on september 13, 2007.

From the Latin ‘lifantus’ (fem/sus); boat with five crewmembers united by a sidereal dream, which travels at great speed, visiting corner to corner the immense galaxy of pop and rock. With the mission of finding the talisman of Latin fusion, the amulets of funk and the lost jewels of the blues caves…”

En diciembre de 2006 en un pintoresco bar del Raval llamado Piano, nace Lifante. Sus integrantes han ido cambiando por el camino, pero actualmente los tripulantes de esta “nave de sueños compartidos” son Juan Carlos Lifante (voz, guitarra acústica), Gato De La Puente (batería), Esteban Boero (guitarra, coros), Nando Heredia (percusión, coros) y Yeray Déniz (bajo, coros).

In December 2006, in a picturesque Raval bar called Piano, Lifante was born. Their members have changed along the way, but the current crew of this “ship of shared dreams” is made up of Juan Carlos Lifante (vocals, acoustic guitar), Gato De La Puente (drums), Esteban Boero (guitar, backing vocals), Nando Heredia (percussion, backing vocals) and Yeray Déniz (bass, backing vocals).

Con un sello muy personal, y letras comprometidas que se entrelazan con melodías y ritmos para todos los gustos, revisten de un halo especial los escenarios que pisan. Ahora han logrado materializar su sueño: “Amuleto”. “Acabamos de sacar nuestro primer disco, llamado Amuleto, que grabamos entre junio y septiembre del 2007, en el cual salen 13 canciones escritas desde el corazón, con letras muy personales y ritmos muy bien escogidos para la ocasión...”.

With a very personal stamp, and compromising lyrics which intertwine with melodies and rhythms for all tastes, they redress with a special halo the stages they play on. Now they have been able to realise their dream: “Amuleto”. “We have just brought out our first record, called Amuleto, which we recorded between June and September 2007, and in which there are 13 songs written from the heart, with very personal lyrics and rhythms very specially chosen for the occasion…”

Aunque esta mexicana es diseñadora industrial de profesión, especializada en arte y arquitectura, lo que nos atrae en esta ocasión es su pasión por la fotografía. Radicada en Barcelona desde hace 7 años, Renee (29) se ha avocado principalmente hacia la fotografía técnica y de autor, sin dejar de lado las otras disciplinas artísticas a las que se dedica; entre sus exposiciones y proyectos destacan: escultura de bronce expuesta en “Diálogo de Bancas”, Paseo de la Reforma, México D.F.; fotonovela para el teatro Lliure de Montjuic. Obra: Fotomatón / “El Malentés” de Albert Camus, “e=mc2 mostra de proyectes visuals 05, Els Temps: de la paraula a la imatge”; obra: vista de arriba 0.2.

Adicionalmente en su propio estudio “maracadesign” en sociedad con Alegra Elmann Fasja, desarrolla proyectos de diseño industrial, diseño gráfico, escaparatismo, fotografía, interiorismo y escenografía. Even though this Mexican girl is an industrial designer by trade, specialising in art and architecture, what attracts us on this occasion is her passion for photography. Since living in Barcelona for the past seven years, Renee (29) has dedicated herself mainly to technical and portrait photography, although she still has time for other artistic disciplines; among her exhibitions and projects the following stand out: a bronze sculpture exhibited as “bench dialogues” on Mexico City’s Paseo de la Reforma, a photo-novel for the Lliure Theatre in Montjuic, the piece: the photo booth / “el malentés” by Albert Camus, “e=mc2 visual project exhibition 05, the times: from the word to the image”, the work: view from above 0.2. Additionally, in her own studio, “maracadesign”, in collaboration with Alegra Elmann Fasja, she develops industrial and graphic design projects, dummy art, photography, interiors and scenography.

Mezcla de técnicas, trazos ingenuos y coloridos que dan vida a personajes inconclusos y misteriosos, líneas irregulares que nos invitan a completar las imágenes; ésta es la propuesta de Mariona Mas. Con tan sólo 21 años, lleva 4 dedicándose al diseño y aunque comenzó estudiando arquitectura no tardó más de 30 días en darse cuenta de su interés por estudiar algo más vinculado al campo de las artes, así que estudió diseño gráfico en el IED, (Instituto Europeo di Design). Como artista multidiscipliniaria en su página web (www.elprimerbateg.com) es posible encontrar muestras de sus trabajos en animación, ilustración, fotografía, imagen coorporativa e incluso juguetes.

A mixture of techniques, ingenious and colourful strokes which give life to inconclusive and mysterious characters, uneven lines which invite us to complete the images; that is what is brought to us by Mariona Mas. Just 21 years old, Mariona has dedicated herself to design for 4 years and even though she began by studying architecture, she realised after only 30 days that she wanted to study something more directly linked with art, so she opted to study graphic design at the IED (Instituto Europeo di Design). On the website (www.elprimerbateg.com) of this multidisciplined artist, samples of her wide range of work can be found, including animation, illustrations, photography, corporate image and even toys.

racionalidad y sentimiento...

Hablar de Steve Bug, es hacer referencia a la calidad, al house, al mínimal, al techno, pero sobre todo, al perfeccionismo, a mucho sentimiento y trayectoria. Stefan Brügesch se ha formado ya como un emblema de la electrónica mundial en la escena alemana desde 1991, con más de tres sellos en su haber: Poker Flat, Dessous, Audiomatique. Es el hombre de la versatilidad, de la pasión por la noche y por la música. A sus más de 100 producciones les ha impreso una marca personal: armonía, melodía y estructura (reproducida después por varios). Y en el mundo de la constante redefinición, ¡qué mejor fórmula que la de Steve!, una visión no sólo musical, sino también estratégica.

Cuando se habla de música, se habla también de la industria, sobre todo hoy en día. ¿Cómo se destacan Poker Flat, Dessous y Audiomatique de los demás? Simplemente tratamos de ser profesionales y sacar la música que nos gusta. Siempre estamos buscando a talentos nuevos y tratamos de trabajar de cerca con nuestros artistas. Pero no sé si eso nos haga destacar mucho... ;) En esta época de la digitalización, ¿es el vinil una cosa del pasado? No para mí, el vinil aún suena mejor y es una manera más segura de almacenar a la música, mejor que cualquier disco duro. Todavía compro mucho vinil y grabo casi toda la música que pongo desde el vinil, dado que la calidad del sonido es mucho más agradable. Quizás se venda menos ahora, pero creo que habrá mercado para el vinil en el futuro.

¿Lo ves como una amenaza? Buena pregunta, creo que también es una oportunidad para hacer llegar a la música a la gente que no tiene ese acceso a las tiendas de discos o algo así, pero luego tienes a toda esta gente compartiendo los archivos, y eso no ayuda a los artistas a sobrevivir, así que es muy complicado. También es muy difícil encontrar música nueva en esas vías de descarga, ya que la gente normalmente se queda con los sellos y artistas que ya conoce. No hay nada como un vendedor en la tienda de discos que te quiere convencer a escuchar un nuevo disco que tal vez te va a gustar, pero que no habrías encontrado tú solo. Así que la gente sigue comprando lo más obvio. Aparte de la melodía y la armonía, cuál es el elemento más importante de Steve Bug? ¡El groove! ; ) ¿Qué aspecto de tu personalidad se refleja más en tu música? No lo sé realmente... 24

¿Cómo reacciona la industria tras la popularización del formato mp3? Realmente no puedo hablar de toda la industria, pero como todos habremos notado, la mayoría de los sellos ahora reciben porcentajes de los conciertos también, desde que en estos días ya no ganan suficiente dinero sólo con la venta de la música. Las ventas están bajando, el artista hace más dinero tocando en concierto, pero sin la ayuda del sello, la mayoría de los artistas no estarían donde hoy se encuentran. En la escena dance, la mayoría de los artistas tienden a trabajar con más de un sello y eso más difícil. Así, tal vez los sellos no pagarán más a los artistas por los discos que estrenen en el futuro, porque terminan perdiendo dinero en artistas que están en muchos lados; y ojalá que empecemos a ver más producción artística como promoción para tocar en vivo, o algo así. Es una fase interesante, muchas cosas están cambiando...

¿Cómo describirías al “set perfecto”? Creo que no hay algo como un set perfecto. Pero me gusta cuando puedo tocar varios estilos y todo el mundo disfruta, eso es cerca de perfecto para mí. ¿Ha pensado alguna vez en hacer lives? Hoy en día, muchos aprietan “play” cuando están en el escenario, es como los programas de televisión, cuando la gente interpreta con el material pregrabado o trata de hacer sincronización de los labios, porque ni siquiera los vocales están en vivo. Es totalmente estúpido, pero en la mayoría de los casos, al público no parece importarle. Tocar en vivo debe ser algo que creas en el escenario, o al menos debes poder interactuar con el público y cambiar partes del set mientras pinchas. Mi manera de trabajar en el estudio realmente no es factible en el escenario, así que tendría que pensar de manera completamente diferente sobre qué me gustaría hacer

para interpretar en vivo. A veces pienso que debería intentarlo un día, pero siendo honesto, no creo que pase. ¡Ser DJ me encanta demasiado! ¿Mínimal, techno o house? Nunca me he limitado a sólo uno de esos. ¿Cómo ves el futuro de la música electrónica? Desafortunadamente no tengo una máquina del tiempo. ¿Hay algún DJ Nuevo que haya llamado tu atención últimamente? Acabamos de fichar uno nuevo que se llama David Durango, su trabajo es increíble, muy profundo y armonioso, pero con beats

poderosos. También me gusta mucho Guillaume, lo suyo es original y destaca; una bocanada de aire fresco ante el montón mínimal, loop-techno que se promocionan tanto en estos días dentro de la industria de la música. ¿Cómo describirías a Barcelona? Caos hermoso. ¿Ahora qué hay para Steve Bug? ¿Proyectos? ¿Álbums? En este momento estoy trabajando en bugnology tres, que se estrenará en septiembre, y también en algunos cortes para un proyecto de álbum, pero ya veremos...

To talk about Steve Bug is to make reference to quality, to house music, minimal and techno, but above all, perfectionism, trajectory and a lot of feeling. Stefan Brügesch has established himself as an electronic music emblem since 1991, with more than three labels in his name (Poker Flat, Dessous and Audiomatique among them…). He is a man of diversity, passion for the night and for music. On more than 100 productions, he has left his own personal stamp: harmony, melody and structure (which has long been copied by others). And in this world of constant redefinition, what better formula than Steve’s: a vision not only musical but also strategic.

When you talk about music you talk about the industry as well, especially nowadays. How do Poker Flat, Dessous and Audiomatique stand out from the rest? We just try to be professional and release the music that we like. We always look for new talents and try to work closely together with our artists. But I don’t know whether that’s so outstanding... ;) In this digital era, is vinyl now a thing of the past? Not for me, vinyl still sounds better and it’s a safer storage for music, better than any hard disc. I still buy a lot of vinyl and I record almost all the music that I play from vinyl, since the sound quality is so much nicer. Maybe there are less vinyl sales today, but I think there will still be a market for vinyl in the future.

Do you think it could be seen as a threat? Good question, I think it’s also a chance to get music to people that don’t have access to record shops or anything like that, but then you have all these people sharing the files which is not helping the artists to survive, so it’s really complicated. Also it is very difficult to find new music on download platforms. Mostly people stay with the labels/artists they already know. There is nothing like a record shop dealer who is pushing you to check a new record that you may like, but which you wouldn’t have found yourself, so people are still just buying the obvious. Besides melody and harmony, which is Steve Bug’s most important element? The groove! ; ) What part of your personality is reflected the most in your music? I don’t really know... 26

How is the music industry reacting to the popularisation of the mp3 format? I can’t really speak for the entire music industry, but as we all may have noticed, most of the big music labels are now getting percentages of concerts as well, since they can’t make enough money with only releasing music these days. Sales are going down, most of the money is made by the artist through playing concerts and gigs, but without the help of a label /record company most artists wouldn’t be where there are today. Since on the dance scene artists mostly work with more than one label, it’s more difficult. So maybe record companies won’t pay the artists for their releases in the future anymore, because they end up losing money on artists that are all over the place; and hopefully we will start seeing artistic output as a promotion to play more gigs or something like that. It’s an interesting phase, a lot is changing...

How would you describe the “perfect set”? I don’t think there is such a thing as a “perfect set”. But I like it when I can play various styles and everyone is enjoying it, that’s close to perfect. Would you ever think of yourself as a “live set” performer? Nowadays a lot of people just press “play” when they are on stage, it’s like in TV shows, when people are performing to playbacks and trying to be lip-synch, since even the vocals aren’t live. Totally stupid, but in most cases the crowd doesn’t really seem to care! Playing live should be something that you create on stage, or at least you should be able to interact with the crowd and change parts of your set while you’re playing. So you don’t play the same set over and over again. The way I work in the studio is not really convertible to the stage, so I would have to think completely differently about what I would like to do to perform live. Sometimes I think I should try it out one day, but to be honest I don’t think it’s ever gonna happen, I just love djing too much!

Minimal, techno or house? I have never limited myself to only one of those! Moving forward in time, how do you see the future of electronic music? Unfortunately I don’t have a time machine. Has any new DJ or producer recently grabbed your attention? We just signed a new guy called David Durango, his stuff is amazing, really deep and soulful, but with kickin’ beats. Also I like Guillaume a lot, his stuff is

outstanding and original, a breath of fresh air among the one-sided minimal loop-techno that that a lot of people in the music industry hype so much nowadays. How would you describe in one word Barcelona? Beautiful chaos. What next for Steve Bug? Projects? Albums? At the moment I am working on bugnology three, which will be released in September and also on some tracks that may become an album project, but we’ll see...

Y tanto, que a uno le gustaría multiplicarse, poder absorber desde el electro más ansioso, el mínimal más ambicioso, hasta el techno más explosivo. La mayoría de las veces, un deleite.

What can we say about the summer festivals? Sun, a lot of sun; similar quantities of sand and a great musical selection. These are massive events which always give us an impressive amount of options. And so much so, that we like to multiply ourselves, to be able to absorb the most anxious electro, the most ambitious minimal and the most explosive techno. Most of the time, a delight.

Temas muy bien seleccionados y entrelazados entre sí, el álbum completo es un deleite.

15 meses de trabajo, el uso de instrumentos poco ortodoxos, muchos arreglos y mucha melodía hacen de este un álbum muy completo; compuesto por muchas variables musicales que se distinguen entre sí. Dentro de la línea Get Physical: house de buen estilo.

A very good selection of tracks for those who prefer profound minimal techno. Dark and very intense. Far from the commercial, percussive minimal, this compilation is characterised by its complexity, structure and energy. Very-well selected tracks which are expertly intertwined. The whole album is a delight.

El nombre de la banda fue tomado de un famoso restaurante mexicano que se convirtió refugio por excelencia de políticos, escritores y artistas del país.

Avalancha de éxitos (1996) comprende versiones bien trabajadas de canciones populares latinas que los consolidó como banda. Reves/Yo Soy (1999) es el más representativo en cuanto a su despliegue de creatividad. Cuatro Caminos (2003) los catalogó como los Radiohead latinos. Sino (2007) es su último trabajo con tintes rockeros y orientación existencialista.

Sus trabajos suelen ser collages musicales cargados de contrastes culturales y personales que transportan a sonidos que van del punk al ska, del electro al hip hop, pasando por toda la variedad de música regional mexicana y latina.

The name of the band is taken from the famous Mexican restaurant which became a refuge par excellence for politicians, writers and artists in the country.

Avalancha de éxitos (1996) includes well-worked versions of popular Latin songs and consolidated them as a band. Reves/Yo Soy (1999) is the most representative in terms of the band’s display of creativity. Cuatro Caminos (2003) saw them labelled ‘the Latin Radiohead’. Sino (2007) is their latest work, with rock overtones and an existentialist orientation.

They have been nominated several times for the both the Latin and American Grammys. They have shared stages with The White Stripes, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Beastie Boys.

Sound Café Tacvba make a musical allegory of the character of Mexican culture. Their works are often musical collages, charged with cultural and personal contrasts which transport us to sounds ranging from punk to ska, and electro to hip-hop, incorporating a variety of regional Latin and Mexican music.

They have been produced by the likes of Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips), Andrew Weiss (Ween) and Gustavo Santolalla. This scarcity of words to describe the work of los Tacvbos (term used by their fans) has the objective of shocking the naïve and eclectic sound which is uncommon in the music scene. The best way to get in tune with them is to see them live, and luckily they will be in Barcelona at the Sala Apolo on July 9. With more than 10 years of trajectory, these musical chameleons have become living legends on the Mexican and Latin American pop-rock scene.

The bedlam in Goliath Fue curioso lo complicado que se me hizo ordenar y fragmentar las ideas y comentarios que tenía pensados sobre la nueva producción “The Bedlam in Goliath” del grupo “The Mars Volta”. Me di cuenta que esto se manifestaba de alguna manera por lo misma complejidad que implica el concepto de este grupo en si mismo, lleno de detalles, simbolismos, misticismo y enigmáticas personalidades de sus líderes: Cedric Bixler-Zavala voz y letras y Omar RodríguezLópez guitarrista y compositor principal.

It was curiously complicated for me to organise and fragment the ideas and comments I had in my head regarding the new production “The Bedlam in Goliath” by the group The Mars Volta. I realised that they manifested themselves in some way by the same complexity which the group’s own concept implies, full of details, with symbolism, mysticism and the enigmatic personalities of its leaders: Cedric Bixler-Zavala (vocals and lyrics) and Omar Rodríguez-López (guitarist and principal composer).

Esta técnica la usaba el maestro Miles Davis y obtuvo de sus músicos ejecuciones inmortales, el trabajo de producción y edición de estos fragmentos es extraordinario pues no demerita la homogeneidad de las canciones, al contrario, lo hace más directo y cohesivo.

The album was released in January this year and the interesting thing is that the band already have a well-defined musical style, while always looking to be innovative, and that can be perceived principally by the composition style determined by Rodríguez. It consisted in not letting the musicians see the previous part of a song, and therefore meant that each one played his own part more intensely, almost by instinct. That technique was used by the maestro Miles Davis, who drew immortal performances from his musicians. The production work and editing of these fragments is extraordinary, because it doesn’t take any merit away from the homogeneity of the songs, on the contrary, it makes them more direct and cohesive. Rodríguez and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ John Frusciante are charged with the guitar sound and the interaction of styles proves fascinating, because Rodríguez is monotone like Robert Fripp, while Frusciante is more like Jimmy Page.

Las guitarras están a cargo de Rodríguez y John Frusciante de los Red Hot Chilli Peppers; la interacción de estilos resulta fascinante, pues Rodríguez es atonal como Robert Fripp y Frusciante mas a la Jimmy Page. En la voz, el estilo desarrollado por Cedric es alucinante, el registro del señor es impresionante y sabe utilizarlo perfectamente; experimenta con efectos que por momentos la hacen sonar rarísimo pero congruente con el proyecto. También se encarga de

los textos, que son bastante subjetivos y dejan mucho a la interpretación de cada escucha. Personalmente me impactó la precisión y potencia del baterista Thomas Pridgen, con apenas 24 años le pega a los tambores como los grandes, en general la música es muy intensa, agresiva y potente. Es un disco que no te deja respirar, el ritmo es constante, vertiginoso y con pasajes que van desde ritmos africanos, afrocaribeños, jazz-fusión, rock duro, psicodelia y hasta pop, en una perfecta fusión y armonía que integran un concepto global bien definido ejecutado por excelentes músicos. La pregunta obligada, ¿de dónde viene la inspiración y cuáles son las influencias? en lo personal me encanta cuando se les pregunta sobre estas cuestiones, es muy raro que citen a músicos, o tipos de música, más bien se enfocan a citar influencias que tienen que ver con el cine, específicamente con directores como Werner Herzog, Federico Fellini, Alejandro Jodorowsky y personajes emblemáticos de la contracultura como el arqueólogo y escritor Carlos Castaneda; referencia obligada en viajes psicotrópicos y enseñanzas indígenas. 34

In the vocals, the style developed by Cedric is brilliant, his range impressive and he knows how to use it perfectly; he experiments with effects that at

times make his sound strange but which are congruent with the project. He also writes the lyrics, which are pretty subjective and leave a lot to the listener’s own interpretation. Personally, I was taken back by the precision and power of drummer Thomas Pridgen, who at just 24 bangs the drums like the greats. In general the music is very intense, aggressive and powerful. This is a record which doesn’t let you breathe, the rhythm is constant, vertiginous and has passages which go from African rhythms, to Afro-Caribbean beats, jazzfusion, hard rock, psychedelic and even pop, in a perfect fusion and harmony which combine to form a well-defined global concept played by excellent musicians. The obvious question: where do they draw their inspiration from and who are their influences? Personally, I love it when they are asked about these things because it’s very rare that they cite musicians. Instead, they focus on influences related to cinema, specifically on directors such as Werner Herzog, Federico Fellini and Alejandro Jodorowsky, as well as emblematic

Verlos en vivo, la experiencia es excelente, la energía es impresionante. Cedric comentaba que las sesiones de grabación se impregnaron de mala suerte porque estuvieron jugando ouija y contactando entes extraños... ¿Buena o mala suerte? Fuera lo que fuese, nos dejaron un material excelente para disfrutar.

The record’s art is comprised of illustrations full of symbolism and concepts which incorporate visual references from the Middle East and even religious altarpiece paintings from Catholic churches in Mexican villages. All that is left for me to say is that I had the opportunity to see them live and it was an excellent experience. Their energy is impressive. Cedric has said that their recording sessions have been plagued by bad luck because they have experimented with Ouija boards and contacted strange beings… good or bad luck? Whichever it is, they have given us some excellent material to enjoy.

¿Soy yo o ver la cartelera cinematográfica últimamente es como un permanente Déjà vu? The X files 2 (Expediente X 2), Hulk 2, The Mummy 3 (La Momia 3), Sex and the City: the movie (Sexo en Nueva York: La Película), Dombsday: El día del juicio, Get Smart (Superagente 86 de película) y así la lista es larga y continua. Es una sensación bastante extraña, pues esto no sólo es padecimiento del cine, ¿en dónde más lo he visto antes? TV, comics, videojuegos, ahora se aprovecha cualquier cosa que haya tenido un relativo éxito para pasarlo por celuloide. Hoy en día ya no sólo nos conformamos con hacer la tercera, cuarta y quita parte de una peli, por cierto, ¿era necesaria una secuela de Indiana Jones? Aclarando que no es una queja, yo siempre he sido gran fan de Indie. Pero todo esto provoca que la absoula falta de ideas frescas, haga de su búsqueda casi una necesidad. Hace no mucho vi el tráiler de la Boda de mi Novia, cuando me di cuenta de la trama pensé “ya he visto esa película, ¡se llama La boda de mi mejor amigo! Sólo han sustituido a Julia Roberts por Patrick Dempsey”. Todo esto dejando de lado los remakes de películas de otras partes del mundo, de las cuales siempre se ha alimentado la meca del cine. Cuando traté de investigar cómo le había ido en cartelera al éxito español Rec de Jaume Balagueró en los Estados Unidos, fui sorprendida con el hecho de que aún no se había estrenado, ya que se habían comprado sus derechos y se estaba preparando el estreno de Quarantine (remake de Rec) para octubre de este mismo año. Este mal no sólo afecta al cine, la televisión está bastante grave también. Hace muy poco estrenaron la nueva versión del Coche Fantástico y en lo personal un coche que hable y que te de cierta información hoy en día ya no es taaan fantástico, es más creo que a eso le dicen GPS ¿no? Clásicos de todas las épocas pueden verse infectadas por este mal, como uno de los estrenos más sonados para la próxima temporada en los Estados Unidos 90210 2.0 (Sensación de Vivir 2.0), pero ¿qué, esta serie no terminó apenas en el 2000?

Algo pasa en Hollywood y no es bueno. Necesariamente vienen a la mente todos los problemas a los que esta industria se enfrenta en la actualidad, entre los salarios millonarios de los actores, el internet y la huelga de guionistas, parece ser que la creatividad es la última de sus preocupaciones. ¿Dónde estás Charlie Kauffman (Beeing Jhon Malkivich y Adaptation) cuando te necesitamos? Bueno, en realidad sabemos que estuvo en Cannes participando en la 61ª edición del Festival, donde se estrenó también como director con Synecdoche, New York. Menos mal la esperanza es lo último que muere. Sólo queda agradecer a los dioses del arte por Juno este año, esperando que haya más y mejores guiones originales para el próximo. En definitiva creo que me manifiesto por muchos cuando canto afuera del cine “¿qué queremos?: Ideas nuevas; ¿cuándo las queremos?: ¡Ahora!” Pero si hay que dar quejas también hay que dar soluciones. En la sección de estrenos podrás ver algunas cintas que pueden curar un poco el agobio de este mes.

Is it me or are today’s cinema listings like a permanent déjà vu? The X files 2, Hulk 2, The Mummy 3, Sex and the City: The Movie, Doomsday, Get Smart; the list goes on and on. It’s quite a strange sensation, but this is not only a problem exclusive to cinema. Where else have I seen it before? TV, comics, videogames… now anything which has enjoyed relative success is taken advantage of and put straight onto celluloid. Today we are no longer satisfied with making the third, fourth and fifth part of a film… by the way, was an Indiana Jones sequel really necessary? Don’t get me wrong, I have always been a big Indie fan, but all of this means that the total lack of fresh ideas becomes even more of a reality. A while ago I saw the trailer for Made of Honour, and I quickly realised that I had seen the film before. It’s called My Best Friend’s Wedding and all they have done is substitute Julia Roberts for Patrick Dempsey! All of that is leaving to one side the remakes of films from other parts of the world, which has always fed the movie Mecca. When I tried to investigate how the Spanish hit Rec de Jaume Balagueró had done in the United States, I was surprised to discover that it had not even come out yet. I was less surprised to find out that the rights had been bought and the premiere of Quarantine (remake of Rec) will be out in October this year.

These ills don’t only affect cinema. Television is also in a bad state. Not long ago, the new version of Knight Rider came out and personally, a car which talks and gives certain information now and again is not all that fantastic. Actually, isn’t it called GPS? Classics from all eras can be affected by this plague, like one of the hotly-awaited series for next season in the USA; 90210 2.0. But didn’t that end in about the year 2000, you may ask… Something is happening in Hollywood and it’s not good. With all of the problems the industry faces today, from the actors’ millionaire salaries, the Internet and the script-writers’ strike, the lack of creativity appears to be the least of their worries. Where are you Charlie Kauffman (Being John Malkovich and Adaptation) when we need you? Well, actually we know that he was participating in the 61ª edition of the Cannes Festival, where he showed off Synecdoche, New York, his directorial debut. Lucky that hope is the last thing to leave us. We must also thank the gods of art for Juno this year, and hope that there are more original scripts in the coming twelve months. I definitely think I speak for many when I shout out loud about cinema: “What do we want? We want new ideas! When do we want them? We want them now!” But if we are to complain then we must propose solutions. So in the releases section, you will find some flicks to cure the suffocation of this month.

Han pasado casi 18 años y cómo ha cambiado Berlín. En noviembre de 1989, el muro por fin cayó y la ciudad se reencontró con la libertad. Y esa libertad la ha aprovechado al máximo, para reinventarse, para florecer y para convertirse en tal vez la ciudad más cool de Europa. La división entre el oeste y el este aún se nota, por supuesto, aunque esa línea ya poco visible hace todavía más fascinante la ciudad: un lado comercial, el otro alternativo; uno rico, el otro más modesto; uno de negocios, el otro placer.

The division between west and east can still be noticed, of course, although that invisible line makes Berlin an even more fascinating place. One side is commercial, the other alternative; one rich, the other modest; one about business, the other about pleasure.

La escena musical barcelonesa sigue creciendo, siendo cada vez más internacional, diversa y vibrante. Aquí las noches se vuelven interminables donde el calor, las sensaciones, la libertad, la música y el movimiento se funden para ser uno. Raum open air (El Parc del Forum / anfiteatro). Liquid (Complex Esportiu Hospitalet Nord). Gente guapa con ganas de escuchar buena música, rodeado de una inmensa piscina donde darte el último chapuzón del día. Este club se caracteriza por tres cosas. Primero, ambiente playero y realmente desenrollado; lo que lo hace ser uno de los predilectos entre los clubes domingueros de verano. Segundo, generalmente buena música; los domingos se han preocupado por generar ese ambiente con un toque de techno soulero y cada domingo llevan a buenos DJs (suecos, alemanes, franceses, ingleses, de todo un poco). Tercero, que no es necesariamente positivo, requiere esfuerzo trasladarse hasta el club, lo recomendable es llegar hasta allá en cualquier vehículo motorizado. La piscina y el ambiente no son gratis, hay que poner empeño. Las opciones nocturnas en Barcelona siempre son muchas, y es así porque nos encontramos en una de las ciudades con más vida de todo tipo. Hay que disfrutarlo y si el clima lo permite... hay que hacerlo al aire libre. 68

For those who live in a metropolis, spending the summer in the city is not the most appealing prospect, but for those of us who live in Barcelona, it is more of a ritual. And when the temperature reaches its maximum and insomnia bites in the night, the city offers us much more than a typical July day on the beach. Barcelona’s musical scene keeps growing, becoming more and more international, diverse and vibrant. Here, the nights are endless. The heat, the feelings, the freedom, the music and the movement fuse as one. Raum open air (El Parc del Forum / anfiteatro). The idea is to bring the cool atmosphere from northern Europe to the warm seas of the Mediterranean. Located in an open air amphitheatre with an acoustic of 20,000 KW, this club offers “sweet” Berlin and London tech-house from 7 or 8 in the evening.

Liquid (Complex Esportiu Hospitalet Nord). A good-looking crowd keen to hear quality music, surrounded by a huge swimming pool in which they can enjoy the last dip of the day. This club is characterised by three things. First of all, the laid-back beach atmosphere; which makes this one of the Sunday favourites in summertime. Secondly, generally good music; soulful techno and good djs: Swedes, Germans, French, English, a little bit of everything. Thirdly, and on a not particularly positive note, it is quite an effort to reach this club and it is recommended to arrive by car or taxi. The pool and the atmosphere are not free but the effort is worthwhile. The nocturnal options in Barcelona are endless, and that is because we find ourselves in one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. It is to be enjoyed and weather permitting... should be enjoyed outside.

Estábamos en el Nit Bocata, un brumoso chiringuito de comida rápida frente al Razzmatazz, con música de guitarras a toda castaña y paredes empapeladas con carteles de conciertos, en el que uno puede llenar el estómago a medianoche tras una agotadora sesión de botes, palmas y oeoeoés (y todos sabemos que la comida ingerida en esas circunstancias sabe mejor que la de los restaurantes más in, aunque se trate de hot dogs y hamburguesas... o quizá precisamente por eso). Mi novia y yo acabábamos de salir de un concierto de Interpol y devorábamos nuestros bocadillos a pie de barra. Una pareja que teníamos al lado se interesó por las flamantes camisetas de la banda que habíamos comprado en el merchandising del Razz. Entablamos conversación,

We were at Nit Bocata, a dingy little eatery opposite Razzmatazz, with guitar music in full flow and walls festooned with concert posters, and where one can line the stomach at midnight following an exhausting session of jumping, clapping and singing (and we all know the food consumed in those circumstances tastes better than any from a trendy restaurant, even if it’s hot dogs and hamburgers… or maybe exactly for that reason). My girlfriend and I had just come out of an Interpol concert and were devouring our bocadillos from top to bottom. A couple sat next to us were interested in the bright band T-shirts we had bought at the club. We began to talk and found out they were actually brother and sister. They had come all the way from Ceuta to go to the concert and spend

En eso, a mi novia la llamó alguien al móvil y salió del local para oír mejor, mientras yo seguía charlando con los dos hermanos. Justo entonces me di cuenta de que no nos habíamos presentado y les dije mi nombre. Cuando la chica dijo llamarse Rosalía empecé a partirme de risa. “¿De qué te ríes?”, me preguntó. “Mi novia también se llama Rosalía”. “¡Anda ya!”, exclamó. Creyó que le estaba tomando el pelo. Cuando volvió mi novia, ella también lo creyó. Tuvieron que mostrarse sus DNI la una a la otra, entre carcajadas. Acabamos yéndonos de copas los cuatro hasta cerrar los bares.

a weekend in Barcelona. They had that innate southern vibe and we got on well straight away. My girlfriend took a call on her mobile and went out of the bar to hear better, while I stayed talking to the brother and sister. Just then I realised that we hadn’t introduced ourselves, and I told them my name. When the girl told me her name was Rosalía, I burst out laughing. “What are you laughing at?” she asked me. “My girlfriend is also called Rosalía”. “No way,” she exclaimed. She thought I was making it up, and when my girlfriend came back, she also thought it was a joke. Laughing hysterically, they ended up having to show each other their DNI cards to prove it was actually true. And we ended up going out for drinks until 4am, when the bars closed.
