Llega la mitad del año y pareciera que es ahora cuando empieza todo: el verano se hace oficial. La playa, el sol, la piel sale y llega por fin la tregua, la sensación de respiro; sabemos que, si el cambio climatológico lo permite, el buen tiempo vendrá.

En este junio deseamos, además de que haya agua en las duchas de la playa, que cada uno logre multiplicarse y que el cuerpo alcance para bailar en los distintos escenarios, que se tenga la vista para alcanzar cada uno de los acontecimientos, el cerebro para concluir la faena restante, el tiempo para broncearse y absorber la energía suficiente para que el verano continúe.

The year is almost half over and it seems as if it had just begun. Spring is ending and summer solstice is upon us. The beach and the sun are here, the skin begins to change colour and finally, a breath of fresh air, a respite. And we know that, if climate change allows, the good weather will come.

This June, we hope that there is enough water to shower on the beach. But we also hope that each one of you is able to multiply yourselves, to dance on different stages, to enjoy the view and capture the many events on offer, use the brain to finish work and the weather to tan. “Desde el fondo de un cubo de pintura plástica” como nos comentan sus integrantes, llega el proyecto Mixed Media.

Conformado por un colectivo abierto de personas cuya intención y razón de ser, es experimentar con distintas técnicas y formatos que abarcan desde el muro y el papel hasta el ordenador.

“From the bottom of a cube of plastic painting”, as their members remark, arrives the Mixed Media project.

Comprised of an open collective of people whose intention and reason for being is to experiment with different techniques and formats on everything from walls to paper and computers.

Sus integrantes proceden de pueblos periféricos de la ciudad Condal, teniendo a Barcelona como centro de su radio de acción; y aunque se han desarrollado individualmente en distintas ramas artísticas como la fotografía, el diseño o la pintura, actualmente han unido fuerzas y se dedican específicamente a la experimentación dentro de las típicas técnicas del graffiti.

Their members hail from towns on the outskirts of Barcelona, making the city the centre of their attentions and action radius; and even though they have developed individually on different branches such as photography, design and painting, they have now joined forces to dedicate themselves specifically to experimenting within typical graffiti techniques.

¿Por qué Barcelona?

“Nos gustaba Barcelona, fue una de las ciudades mas fuertes a nivel de arte en la calle hace unos años. Hoy la escena graffitera en la ciudad está un poco muerta. Las nuevas normas municipales contra la libre expresión en la calle han hecho emigrar a los artistas hacia la periferia. Es imposible pintar en los sitios de toda la vida sin riesgo a fuertes sanciones económicas. La política tolerancia 0 al graffiti sólo fomenta el bombardeo de la ciudad.

Aun así, Barcelona sigue siendo una ciudad muy interesante a nivel intercultural, con muchas cosas nuevas y sugerentes que aprender”.

Why Barcelona?

“We liked Barcelona, it was one of the cities with a big street art scene a few years back. Today, the graffiti scene in the city has almost died out. The new municipal laws against free expression in the street have forced the artists to migrate towards the outskirts. It’s impossible to paint in the places we did before without the risk of receiving a hefty fine. The police’s zero tolerance on graffiti only provokes further bombardment in the city. Even so, Barcelona is still a very interesting city on an inter-cultural level, with many new things and suggestions to learn from.”

n ´ sista N´SISTA nos propone un verdadero remix de influencias donde las canciones populares brasileñas se dejan mezclar y adaptar con voces procesadas, improvisación jazzística y poesía hablada. Este dúo está formado por las hermanas Marise Cardoso aka DJIIVA (35) y Lili Jones, (26), viven en Barcelona desde hace 7 y 3 años respectivamente; procedentes de Brasil, ambas son arquitectas y han estudiado música desde muy pequeñas en Conservatorios y Escuelas de Música en su país natal.

Marise ha participado en proyectos como el Pulgas Mix (Festival de Cultura en Acción), del cual es creadora y directora. También del Femelek, festival dedicado a la mujer y la electrónica. “¡Desde siempre hemos estado haciendo música en casa, cantando y pasándolo bien!” Su primera actuación fue en el Festival FEMELEK 07´en Marzo, y desde entonces no han parado; con diversas presentaciones en Berlín, Menorca y en varios lugares de Barcelona como Sidecar (Brazelona Sessions), Otto Zutz, Jardi de la Masana, Casa Sagnier y NIU, por lo que fueron seleccionadas para el proyecto Més a Prop 2007. También se les podrá ver en las Fiestas de la Mercè.

N´SISTA offer us a real mix of influences, in which popular Brazilian songs are allowed to be mixed and adapted with different processed voices, jazzy improvisation and spoken poetry. This duo of sisters is formed by Marise Cardoso, aka DJIIVA (35) and Lili Jones (26), who have lived in Barcelona for 7 and 3 years, respectively. Coming from Brazil, both are architects and studied music from a very young age in music shools and colleges in their country of birth.

Marise has taken part in projects like Pulgas Mix (Culture in Action Festival), of which she is both the creator and director, and Femelek, a festival dedicated to women and electronic music. “We always made music at home, singing and having a good time!”. Their first performance was at the FEMELEK 07´ Festival in March.They have performed in Berlin, Menorca and in several places throughout Barcelona, such as Sidecar – in the Brazelona Sessions –, Otto Zutz, Jardi de la Masana, Casa Sagnier, NIU. That’s why they were selected for the Més a Prop 2007 project, and we’ll see them at the Fiestas del la Mercè.

DJIIVA: “Como arquitecta, Barcelona siempre me ha despertado la curiosidad...mil ciudades en una, o sea, su trama urbana es un compilado de tiempos y estilos - desde los romanos hasta hoy... ¡y eso me encanta! Cuando llegué en el 2000 las cosas eran bastante diferentes, había mucha más vida en la calle... desde hace unos años la situación viene cambiando radicalmente...peeero, Barcelona atrapa, la vida es cómoda (a pesar de que cada día más cara) y la presencia del mar ayuda en momentos de agobio.”

DJIIVA: “As an architect, Barcelona has always awoken curiosity in me... it is a thousand cities in one, in which its urban layout is a compilation of times and styles – from the Romans to modern day... and I love that!!! When I arrived in 2000, things were quite different, there was a lot more life in the street..., the situation has been changing radically over the last few years... but, Barcelona traps you... life is comfortable (despite being more expensive every day) and the presence of the sea helps in moments of stress!”

Lili: “A parte de interés por esta ciudad de tantas caras, colores, tiempos y “nacionalidades”, vine a Barcelona a probar el gustito de la vida en Europa y me encantó. Ahora me siento local y no me veo en otro lugar. Es el ritmo frenético de novedades y de gente que no para, ¡eso fue lo que me detuvo y no puedo vivir sin esa pulsación!”

Lili: “Due to my interest in this city of many faces, colours, times and “nationalities”, I came to Barcelona to try European life... and I loved it. Now I feel like a local and I don’t see myself anywhere else. It’s the frenetic rhythm of new things and people who never stop, that is what kept me here and I can’t live without this pulsation!”

“N´SISTA y su música tienen mucho de catarsis. Las producciones, principalmente los primeros temas, no siguen una línea previsible, son bastante libres y personales, un poco peliculeras, ya que hemos estado probando con las posibilidades tecnológicas. Nuestra música expresa una visión muy particular de temas del cancionero popular de Brasil. Adaptaciones libres, experimentales, donde la poesía, el ritmo y la tecnología se plasman en un collage tan bello como indescriptible.”

“N´SISTA and their music have a lot of catharsis! The productions, especially the first songs, do not follow a predictable line, they are quite free and personal, a little film-like, because we have experimented with technological possibilities... our music expresses a very particular vision of songs by popular Brazilian singers. They are freely adapted, experimental, and poetry, rhythm and technology come together in a beautiful but indescribable collage.”

gallery bizart Es conocido por todos que en Barcelona se concentra una cantidad importante de artistas de toda índole, algunos pocos consagrados, muchos estudiantes y otros con potencial aún sin descubrir; pero todos con algo en común: la intención y a la vez difícil tarea de dar a conocer su obra y por qué no, ganarse la vida con ello.

It’s well known that in Barcelona there is an important concentration of artists of all types, although many are in their early stages, students or others with potential still to be discovered; but all of them share something in common: the aim and difficult task of getting their work known and, if possible, making a living from it.

Interesándose por este sueño es probablemente por lo que proliferan en Barcelona ideas como la que nos trae el colectivo Gallery Bizart, cuya razón de ser es la de crear una nuevo concepto de galería, donde se promueva la convivencia de diferentes disciplinas artísticas fusionando el arte con el ambiente nocturno de la ciudad. Siendo así un espacio de intercambio y referencia para todos aquellos artistas que intentan difundir sus creaciones. Un pretexto para la experimentación con la música, la pintura, la fotografía, el videoarte y cualquier otra manifestación artística.

Following such a dream in Barcelona is probably why ideas such as the ones brought to us by the collective Gallery Bizart come about. Bizart’s aim is to create a new concept of gallery, promoting the co-existence of different artistic disciplines fusing art with the city’s nocturnal environment. The gallery therefore becomes a space dedicated to this exchange and a reference for all of those artists who intend to spread their creations about.

It is essentially a pretext for experimentation with music, painting, photography, video art and any other artistic manifestations.

Con dos años de trayectoria que avalan su capacidad de adaptación y organización, actualmente llevan a cabo un evento mensual en Buda restaurante, el cual describen como un espacio “bizarro” donde se pueden encontrar novedades y artistas con muchas sensaciones y sentimientos por comunicar.

With two years of experience which endorse their capacity of adaptation and organisation, the gallery currently holds an event every month at Buda restaurant, which they describe as a “bizarre” space where it is possible to find new things and artists with many sensations and feelings to communicate.

sujeto catarsis didac pla Didak Pla Colomer, oriundo de Barcelona, siempre interesado en el tema de las artes, a sus 26 primaveras ha estudiado dibujo e ilustración en la Escola Massana y también 5 años en la escuela de comics. Obtuvo la beca Antonio Gala la cual le permitió trabajar y exponer su trabajo en Granada. Actualmente se dedica a ilustrar libros de cuentos y poemas, además de hacer trabajos de diseño, ilustración y dibujo como freelance.

Didak Pla Colomer, native of Barcelona, has always been interested in the arts and at the age of 26 has already studied design and illustration in the Escola Massana, as well as 5 years in comic school. He was awarded the Antonio Gala grant, which allowed him to work and exhibit in Granada. Nowadays, he illustrates poems and storybooks, while also working on other freelance design, illustration and art projects.

“I live in a permanent catharsis because I am continually disillusioned and excited by everything at once. I am disillusioned by a piece of work and also excited, I get emotional when I see things and I am aware of everything that is going on around me.

That inspires me and I like to see the bigger picture; that all of us are going to the same place and when we die, in the same way, maybe there will be something better”.

Fashion Freak Pasarelas, workshops, fiestas, mercadillo, espacios interactivos y mucho más…todo envuelto en papel celofán y rebosado con purpurina.

La quinta edición del Fashion Freak, que tomará la ciudad Condal los días 11 y 13 de junio, se nos presenta bajo una atmósfera lúdica y fresca donde cada uno puede ser protagonista a su manera. Sus creadores Felipe Ibáñez y Virginia Rivero nos cuentan como se llevan 5 años de Fashion Freak y lo que podemos esperar de esta edición: ”Fashion Freak surge dentro de Tela Magazine, como una nueva dimensión de su contenido no convencional. De pronto en 2005, una fotonovela nace dentro de esta extraña revista, rodada en el Boulevard of Broken Dreams. La Fotonovela Fashion Freak se lleva a cabo como una gran producción fotográfica, un espectacular editorial de moda, con el objeto de promocionar y hacer públicos a diseñadores independientes, en principio de ropa y complementos.

El aniversario de Tela Magazine convirtió a Fashion Freak en un festival. Al tratarse de una revista no convencional, la Pasarela de Tela Magazine, la nueva Pasarela Fashion Freak no podía ser convencional.

Entonces creamos un espectáculo único y novedoso. La pasarela donde las modelos saben volar. Lo que rodeaba a aquella primera edición eran actividades (todas novedosas) que el público adoptó con entusiasmo y su alegría nos impulsó a continuar y mejorar. Así, todas las actividades que contiene el festival han definido a este encuentro de la gente freak (única, insólita, inesperada) como el Festival de Vanguardia. Hoy, ya está en 3 ciudades (Barcelona, París y Sevilla) y pronto se sumará Buenos Aires. Hemos incorporado la música electrónica de vanguardia como pilar de nuestra oferta, para que la experiencia sea más placentera. Por eso, nuestro cartel de esta edición que incluye diseñadores, dj’s, músicos y profesionales de la moda, es una estrella contundente”.

The fifth edition of Fashion Freak, which hits Barcelona from June 11 to 13, is brought to us in a fresh and leisurely atmosphere in which anyone, in their own way, can be a protagonist.

Its creators, Felipe Ibáñez and Virginia Rivero, reveal how Fashion Freak has reached five years of age and what we can expect from this edition: “Fashion Freak began in Tela Magazine, as a new dimension of their unconventional content. Then, in 2005, a photo-novel shot on the Boulevard of Broken Dreams started inside this strange magazine. The Fashion Freak photo-novel was a great photographic production, a spectacular fashion editorial with the object of promoting and giving space to independent designers of clothes and accessories. The anniversary of Tela Magazine saw Fashion Freak turn into a festival.

As an unconventional magazine, Tela’s catwalk show and the new Fashion Freak catwalk show could not be conventional either.

So we created a new, unique spectacle; a catwalk where the models can fly. That first edition saw the catwalk surrounded by activities (all innovative) which the public took to with enthusiasm, and their joy inspired us to continue and improve. All of the activities in the festival have helped to define this meeting of freaks (unique, unusual and unexpected people) as the Vanguard Festival. Today, it takes places in three cities (Barcelona, Paris and Seville), and Buenos Aires will soon be added to that list. We have incorporated the coolest electronic music as a pillar of our offering, to make the experience more pleasant.

Therefore, our line-up for this edition includes designers, DJs, musicians and fashion professionals, it’s an impressive star.”

Pareciera que en la escena electrónica europea sólo existiera mínimal y techno, y aunque no disgusta del todo que así sea, existen opciones que contemplan diferentes gustos musicales convergentes en otros géneros sobresalientes.

Profunda, melódica, explosiva y poderosa; techno, mínimal y electro. Desde hace tiempo Chloé ha formado parte de la escena electrónica francesa; residente del Club Pulp en París, y que con buen mérito ha logrado consolidar un estilo particular entre el minimalismo alemán y el electro francés. Una fuerte formación musical la respalda, y en sus producciones asombra con la experimentación dando un giro particular el techno hipnótico, oscuro y con notas de alcaloide puro. En sus sesiones DJ estas características y la técnica se conjugan con energía y el toque femenino, en los que imprime sensibilidad y sagacidad.

Ha producido oficialmente desde 2002 en el sello Hill the DJ lanzando su primer álbum “the waiting room ep” a finales del 2007; ha pinchado en Fabric y remezclado para sellos cotizados como Play House, Get Physical o Kompakt. Y así es como esta productora, Dj y, ahora autora de live sets, nos permite ver un poco de su afamada buena técnica, intuición experimental y paladar musical, en la noche de sábado en el Sonar. Se perciben diferentes ritmos en tu música, uno melódico y profundo, y el otro explosivo y potente. ¿Cómo convergen en Chloé?

Creo que lo importante es la energía que das a la gente, más que la definición del ritmo; nunca hago mucha diferencia entre lo melódico, lo profundo o lo explosivo… lo profundo puede ser potente, y lo explosivo puede ser tranquilo, lo que importa es lo que quiere dar el artista y la forma de hacerlo, al final la idea es la misma.

La música electrónica parece estar yendo hacia el mínimal y el techno. ¿Dónde ubicas el electro hoy en día?

Siempre es difícil clasificar el estilo al que pertenezco. Por lo general me gusta el house, pero sin dejar de lado el techno, el mínimal o el house, porque el techno tiene sonidos mínimales pero viene de la música house.

Los DJs y productores franceses siempre han tenido un estilo particular... un “toque experimental francés”, ¿cómo definirías el tuyo?

No soy partidaria de la idea de un ‘toque francés’, es como hablar de un ‘toque femenino’. Creo que es más fácil decir eso para que la gente te pueda clasificar, pero

mata un poco la idea del artista, cada uno tiene su propia personalidad, y ésta puede ser cercana a algunos artistas franceses, o bien ingleses, alemanes o españoles…

Más adelante en el tiempo, ¿cómo ves el futuro de la música electrónica?

Cuando empecé, la música electrónica era muy underground, se escuchaba en los raves o en algunas discotecas gays solamente, pero ahora es parte de la industria. Es interesante ver cómo ha cambiado. Volveremos a los sonidos ácidos, después al electro, luego al mínimal y otra vez techno. Así es la música house.

Has estado antes en Barcelona, pero ¿qué significa para ti tocar en el Sónar? ¿Popularidad? ¿Un nuevo escenario? ¿Qué podemos esperar de Chloé en el Sónar?

Tocaré en vivo, entonces para mí es algo grande porque casi nunca toco mi set en vivo. Tocaré también en algunos otros festivales que he elegido, creo que es una cosa increíble tocar en el Sónar. Será una nueva experiencia y estoy muy ilusionada de poder tocar allí por primera vez. ¿Cómo describirías a Barcelona en una palabra?

¡Dinámica! La ciudad, la comida, el mar,

los colores, la gente...todo es poderoso en Barcelona.

A través de la música, la gente hace catarsis. ¿Qué performance o producción han significado la mayor catarsis para ti? ¿Por qué?

Una de las mayores catarsis que he experimentado fue con el cineasta austriaco Peter Tscherkassky en su proyecto de imágenes llamado ‘outer space’, en una película de terror original, logra deformar a las imágenes con una energía anárquica punk. A la heroína le dio el papel de una mujer poseída por una fuerza espiritual, tomó diferentes secuencias y mostró la violencia de la posesión para reforzar la crisis que ocurre en el nivel de la superficie de la imagen. Es el ejemplo perfecto, creo, de un artista lidiando con la energía. ¿Qué hay ahora para Chloé? ¿Albums? ¿Proyectos?

Tocaré como siempre de DJ y también haré mi set en vivo en algunos festivales (Mutek, Ardentes, Second Nature,...)

Estoy trabajando en un disco de mezcla para la discoteca de Robert Johnson en Playhouse recordings, algunos remixes, y también un nuevo proyecto con el artista francés Krikor.

the Chloé option It sometimes seems as if only minimal and techno exist on the European electronic music scene, and while perhaps there is no real harm in that, there are other options out there which contemplate different musical tastes, converging in other excellent genres.

Deep, melodic, explosive and powerful; techno, minimal and electro. For some time, Chloé has formed part of the French electronic scene; resident at Club Pulp in Paris, and on good merit, having consolidated a unique style between German minimalism and French electro. She is supported by a strong musical formation, and in her productions, she amazes the listener with a particular twisted style of hypnotic, experimental techno. Dark, with hints of pure alkaloid. In her DJ sessions, these characteristics and the technique fuse together with energy and a feminine touch, adding sensibility and shrewdness.

She has officially produced since 2002 on the Hill label, releasing her first album “The waiting room EP” at the end of 2007; she has played at Fabric and remixed for recognised labels such as Play House, Get Physical and Kompakt. And that is how this producer, DJ and, now live performer, allows us a glimpse of her famed technique, experimental intuition and musical palate. On Saturday night at Sonar; recommended.

You seem to have two sides, one melodic and deep, and the other explosive and powerful. How do they converge in Chloé?

I think the important thing is mostly about the energy you give to the people, more than the definition of rhythm or whatever; I never made really a big distinction between melodic, deep or explosive… deep can be powerful, and explosive can be calm, what counts is what the artist wants to give, and how. Then the idea is the same.

European electronic music seems to be moving towards minimal and techno. Where do you place electro nowadays?

It s always difficult to summarise in one category which style I belong to.

I’m into house music in a general way, with no distinction really about techno, minimal or house, because techno has minimal sounds, and techno comes from house music.

French DJs and producers have always had a particular style... an “experimental French touch”, what do you think would be yours?

I never buy into the French touch idea, It’s a bit like talking about a ‘female touch’, I think It’s easier to say this for people to classify 22

you, but it kills a bit the idea of an artist, each one has their own personality, that can be close to some French artists, or English, German, Spanish...

Moving forward in time, how do you see the future of electronic music?

When I started, electronic music was very underground, it was played in raves and in a few gay clubs only, but now it’s part of the industry. It’s interesting to see how it changed. We’ll come back to acid sounds, then electro, then minimal, then back to techno, this is house music.

You have been in Barcelona before, but what does performing at Sonar mean to you? Popularity? A new stage?

What can we expect from Chloé at Sonar?

I will play live, so for me it s a big thing as I very rarely play my live set, I’ll play it also at a few other festivals I’ve chosen, I think it s an amazing thing to play at Sonar. It’s a new new experience, I feel very excited to be playing there for the first time.

How would you describe Barcelona in one word?

Dynamic! The city, the food, the sea, the

colours, the people... all is powerful in Barcelona.

Through the music people make catharsis.

Which performance or production has meant most for you in that respect? Why?

One of the biggest catharses I felt was with experimental Austrian film-maker Peter Tscherkassky on his images project called ‘outer space’: in an original horror movie, he worked to deform the images with an anarchic punk energy, using the found footage technique. The heroin is cast in the role of a woman possessed by a violent spiritual force. He took different sequences and displayed the violence of this possession to reinforce the crisis that occurs at the surface level of the image.

It’s the perfect example, I think, of an artist dealing with energy.

What next for Chloé? Albums? Projects?

I’ll perform as usual as a DJ and also sometimes my live set in few festivals (Mutek, Ardentes, Second Nature...)

I’m working on a mix CD for the Robert Johnson club on Playhouse recordings, a few remixes, and also a new project with French artist Krikor.

Soft Zen Las acostumbradas noches de domingo del Zen Club adquieren un nuevo formato una vez al mes. Empezarán una hora antes de lo acostumbrado (11pm) con directos de música electrónica suave.

En cada sesión, la sala se acondiciona completamente para crear el clima adecuado a estas sonoridades. Se hace también un montaje visual especial para la ocasión y se ofrece a los asistentes catering gratuito de comida japonesa.

Considerada como una de las mejores bandas emergentes de Estados Unidos, el cuarteto Tapes n’ Tapes propone un soplo fresco para este género pop. Son el guitarrista/vocalista Josh Grier (Tapes 1), el baterista Jeremy Hanson (Tapes 2), el tecladista Matt Kretzman (‘n) y el bajista Erik Appelwick (‘n); quienes han moldeado un sonido que nos remite tanto a The Pixies como a Pavement. Sus influencias son tan variadas, como el número de integrantes que ha pasado por su alineación. Los grupos que resaltan y se hacen presenten a la hora de componer, van desde The Flaming Lips, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Wilco, hasta bandas más contemporáneas como Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

Su primer trabajo fue el EP homónimo en el 2004, pero fue la combinación tanto de su LP The Loon en el 2005 y portales tipo MySpace lo que los hizo merecedores de varias ofertas para firmar con distintos sellos discográficos.

En una entrevista, Grier afirma que ellos no serían conocidos si no fuera por Internet.

Conscientes de las ofertas que les rodeaban, decidieron irse con el sello que según ellos, les daba más libertad creativa: XL Recordings. Éste fue el encargado de relanzar su trabajo a gran escala y responsable del súbito crecimiento de su popularidad.

Considered one of the best emerging bands in the United States, the quartet Tapes n’ Tapes are a breath of fresh air in the pop genre. They are guitarrist/vocalist Josh Grier (Tapes 1), drummer Jeremy Hanson (Tapes 2), keyboard player Matt Kretzman (‘n) and bassist Erik Appelwick (‘n); together they have molded a sound reminscent of The Pixies and Pavement. Este primer LP es una mezcla ecléctica – por no decir rara - de melodías con patrones rítmicos de jazz, folk rock y un pseudo country con vocales que evocan una perversa sensualidad y sonido vintage. El mismo Josh Grieg comenta que hacer este trabajo les divirtió mucho, pero al mismo tiempo les fue un poco frustrante el no tener claro lo que hacían.

Their first LP is an eclectic -not to say strange- mix of melodies with rhythmic patterns of jazz, folk rock and a pseudo country with vocals which evoke a perverse sensuality and a vintage sound. Grier himself remarks that the band enjoyed the work greatly, but says it was also frustating because they didn’t really know what they were doing.

A CCELERATE...

Se suele tener la idea de que por tener un nombre forjado con los años, ya está ganada la aceptación del público en general o los fans al editar material nuevo. Bueno, esta ley no se cumple en todos los casos y para muestra un botón.

El grupo estadounidense R.E.M., pioneros del llamado rock alternativo y formados en los años ochenta, editaron en 2004 el disco “Around The Sun”; definitivamente un disco de calidad inferior a la que un grupo de este calibre nos tiene acostumbrados, y esto se reflejó en sus ventas. Los críticos lo destrozaron (que bueno, los críticos finalmente no son de fiar) y el disco pasó casi desapercibido, pero lo más duro fue cuando los mismos integrantes de la banda afirmaron su poca satisfacción con este álbum.

Como dicen ya lo pasado, pasado y para sacarse la espina, llega un trabajo con toda la energía que le faltó al antecesor, “Accelarate”. Es la nueva entrega y la diferencia se nota de inmediato, al igual que la reacción de la gente.

El álbum empieza por inercia a recibir críticas favorables y a venderse como pan caliente, con toda razón. De entrada lo empecé a escuchar con desconfianza, pero me fui dando cuenta conforme iban pasando las pistas, que la magia sigue ahí y que todavía tienen la capacidad de emocionarte con composiciones bien estructuradas, cargadas de riffs de guitarra eléctrica, memorables y agresivos, acomodados estratégicamente en cada canción dándole sentido. Además cuenta con los elementos que hacen que las disfrutes, por ejemplo tienen el sello característico de la banda, pero además un aire de actualidad combinado con la nostalgia de guitarras crudas rockeras y bases folky en un estilo más clásico. Están presentes los estribillos pegajosos que los distinguen, pero en esta ocasión se sienten más honestos y fluyen de manera muy orgánica; la voz madura y más profunda de Michael Stipe suena grandiosa.

Stipe, personaje polifacético igualmente amigo de Miguel Bosé que de Tom Yorke, (incluso inspiró a Yorke para la composición de la canción “How To Disappear Completely” con su banda Radiohead).

Esto debido a que Stipe le recomendó hacer este

ejercicio mental para pasar desapercibido en un momento en que Yorke, estaba sufriendo una depresión debido a la sobreexposición con los medios y las giras.

Otra anécdota de este personaje “polifacético” (como lo había comentado antes), es cuando la revista Rolling Stone entrevistó a Roger Waters (exlíder de la banda inglesa Pink Floyd), le preguntaban cuáles bandas más o menos actuales le gustaban, él respondió que R.E.M. En algún concierto al que asistió fue a felicitar a los integrantes de R.E.M. tras bastidores al finalizar un concierto, pues disfrutó mucho el cover que tocaron de una canción llamada “Dark Globe” de la autoría de Syd Barrett, fundador de la banda y primer líder de Pink Floyd. Lo curioso fue que estando en el camerino en ningún momento Stipe le dirigió la palabra o lo tomó en cuenta, a lo que Waters afirmaba con risas, “seguramente piensa que el genio era Barrett y que sin él Floyd no era nada, así supuse que sería Stipe”.

Referente a la parte de las letras a cargo del mismo Stipe, debo destacar su fuerte carga política, pues es bien sabido su activismo y oposición al gobierno de Bush. Como ciudadanos estadounidenses, es una posición más honesta y creíble y no como muchos otros que sólo hablan por hablar.

La producción corrió a cargo de Jacknife Lee, quien ha estado a cargo de trabajos de U2, Bloc Party, The Hives entre otros. En resumen: un retorno muy afortunado, fruto en gran parte de la presión que les dejó su álbum anterior, trabajo que no alcanzó las expectativas. Sin duda alguna se comprueba que no es suficiente la reputación ganada por los viejos logros, la calidad es necesaria para llevar en alto el prestigio y el buen nombre de un grupo.

A CCELERATE...

A good name is usually forged over the years in the music business, by gaining public acclaim from live shows or picking up fans through new material. But there are of course exceptions to this rule and here is a prime example.

American group R.E.M. are pioneers of the alternative rock sound. Formed in the eighties, they released the record “Around The Sun” in 2004; definitely a record of inferior quality to the calibre they had us accustomed to, and that was reflected in the sales.

The critics destroyed it (although the critics are not always to be trusted) and the record came and went almost without notice. However, the most surprising thing was that the band members declared themselves not at all satisfied with the album.

As they say, the past is the past and to put it behind them, the band put all the energy missing from the previous work into a new album, “Accelarate”. It’s their latest work and the difference can be noted immediately, likewise the public’s reaction.

The album received favourable reviews and began, unsurprisingly, to sell like hot cakes. To start with, I listened to it with distrust, but as the tracks went by, I realised that the magic is still there and that the band still have the capacity to excite with wellstructured compositions, charged with aggressive and memorable electric guitar riffs accommodated strategically in each song, giving them meaning.

The record also boasts the elements which make you enjoy it, such as the band’s characteristic sound, as well as an up-to-date edge combined with the nostalgia of rocky, raw guitars and folky bass in a more classic style. The band’s customary catchy choruses are there, but feel more honest than before and flow in a very organic fashion; while Michael Stipe’s deeper, mature voice sounds great.

Stipe, a poly-faceted personality who is friends with Miguel Bosé and Tom Yorke, inspired the latter to compose the song “How To Disappear Completely” for his band, Radiohead. Stipe recommended a mental exercise to help Yorke go unnoticed when the singer was suffering from depression due to overexposure to the press and excessive touring.

Another anecdote of this poly-faceted personality (as I called him before) came about when Rolling Stone

magazine interviewed Roger Waters (ex-leader of English band Pink Floyd) and asked him which current bands he liked. He said R.E.M. Waters later went to congratulate R.E.M.’s members behind the scenes at a concert, having very much enjoyed the cover they had played of a song called “Dark Globe”, which was originally written by Syd Barrett, founder and first leader of Pink Floyd. The curious thing is that Stipe not once spoke to or acknowledged Waters. The latter later joked that “he probably thought that the genius was Barrett and that without him Pink Floyd were nothing…”

It must be said that Stipe’s lyrics are politically charged, his activism and opposition to the Bush government is well known. Like any American citizen, his is a credible and honest position and he will not talk for the sake of talking, as many have done.

Jacknife Lee –who has worked with U2, Bloc Party and The Hives, among others– produced the record. In summary, this is a very successful return, thanks in large part to the pressure the band found themselves under following the previous album, which did not live up to expectations. This clearly proves that reputation is not sufficient, and that bands such as R.E.M. cannot live off past glories. Quality is necessary to maintain a band’s prestige and good name, and this record has that. urban CATARSIS_ 31

Barcelona simbiótica Anaí Ibarra y Carolina Zerpa

Las calles nunca parecen iguales, los rostros en ellas son distintos; cambiantes siempre, aunque sean los mismos. Barcelona se nutre de quienes habitamos en ella y nosotros vivimos de la ciudad. Lo que vemos y como nos dejamos ver, influye directamente en nuestra manera de interactuar.

Barcelona es tan simbiótica que la gente que está dentro se confunde entre sí; en ella intercambiamos facultades y habilidades, nos alimentamos de su vista, de su manera de ver al mundo y nos vigorizamos.

El proceso es adaptación al medio, el resultado es absorber lo que no se tiene: cada quien aporta algo y cada uno se beneficia.

Como consecuencia se crea un sistema vivo distinto, que es la ciudad misma.

The streets never appear the same and the faces are different, somehow changed even though they are the same. Barcelona feeds itself through those who live in the city and, at the same time, we live off the place itself. What we see and how we let ourselves be seen directly influence our means of interaction.

Barcelona is so symbiotic that the people inside her get confused; in the city we interchange faculties and skills, we feed ourselves with its views, its way of seeing the world and we are invigorated.

The process is one of adaptation to the medium, the result an absorbing of what we do not have: each person adds something and everyone benefits. By consequence, a different and live system is created, which is the city itself.

loser con twist Dentro de la comedia americana una de las formulas más populares es la del loser (perdedor) que por lo general se une a otros losers (perdedores) para alcanzar una meta, la cual puede ser desde perder la virginidad hasta conquistar el mundo, nunca se sabe. Desde Revenge of the Nerds (La Revancha de los Nerds), Police Academy pasando por cualquier cinta de Ben Stiller se ha utilizado esta trama. Pero ¿por qué la obsesión de los Estados Unidos por los perdedores? Tal vez por que de acuerdo a los estándares de este país es muy difícil ser un ganador. Si no eres Bill Gates, George Clooney o Tiger Woods caes sin duda en la categoría de perdedor, la mayoría de nosotros, gente normalita.

Y así el público se rinde a la fantasía de que de algún modo, algún día, se quedarán con la guapa o el cachas de la película, se harán millonarios o triunfarán contra los chicos guay.

Con esta misma premisa, hace cuatro años Jared Hess nos ofreció una historia de perdedores totalmente diferente, Napoleon Dynamite; una visión indie y fresca del perdedor nerd (empollón) de siempre. Visualmente arriesgada y con un guión completamente diferente, la historia del loser empezó a cambiar de aspecto.

Con esto muy claro el productor Judd Apatow, co-creador de la teleserie de culto Freaks and Geeks, ha tomado a un buen grupo de los más grandes y patéticos losers, ganándose el respeto de la crítica y millones en taquilla. 40 year old virgin (Virgen a los 40), Superbad (Supersalidos) y Knocked up (Lío embarazoso) han creado la sensación de que los losers ya no serán los mismos.

Pero ¿qué las hace diferentes?, ¿por qué los críticos se rinden ante ellas? Es algo tan sencillo como que estas comedias en realidad SI son graciosas. Y aunque cuentan con una cantidad fuerte de risa fácil y chistes de pedos, también hay personajes creíbles y alejados de los clásicos clichés, actuaciones respetables y momentos honestos. Hay que decir que en sus versiones traducidas al castellano no se puede apreciar de todo el humor

loser with a twist Within American comedy, one of the most popular formulas is that of the loser, who generally hangs out with other losers in order to reach a goal, which can be anything from losing their virginity to conquering the world. From Revenge of the Nerds to Police Academy, passing by any Ben Stiller film, this is a well-used trick. But, why the obsession with losers in the United States?

Maybe it’s because, by the country’s standards, it is very difficult to be a winner. Unless you are Bill Gates, George Clooney or Tiger Woods, you definitely fall into the loser category. The majority of us, normal people, sure do. And the public buy into the fantasy that one day, somehow, they will end up with the good-looking girl or guy from the movie, will become millionaires or triumph against the cool gang.

With that same premise, four years ago Jared Hass brought us a totally different loser story, Napoleon Dynamite; a fresh, indie vision of the very same nerd loser. Visually risky and with a completely different script, the story of the loser began to change shape.

With this film it is very clear that producer Judd Apatow, cocreator of the cult television series Freaks and Geeks, has taken a big group of the biggest and most pathetic losers, earning the respect of critics and millions at the box office. 40 year old virgin, Superbad and Knocked Up have created the sensation that losers will never be the same.

But, what makes them different? Why do the critics bow down to these films? It’s simply because these comedies are actually funny. And even though there are a lot of easy laughs and fart jokes, there are also believable characters –far-removed from the classic clichés–, respectable acting and honest moments. It must be said that in the versions translated into Spanish, not all of the humour can be fully appreciated and perhaps that’s because this film is too American. But once you have got over that, it is easy to see why critics such as Michael Phillips, Richard Roeper and Roger Ebert (one of the USA’s most respected film critics) list this among their recommendations.

También es verdad que carecen de un estilo cinematográfico y usan técnicas básicas de televisión, sin aportar nada al ámbito estético, a diferencia del film de Hess, el cual contaba con una propuesta visual definida. Pero tampoco tienen esta pretensión, ya que están concebidas sólo para pasar un buen rato.

Ahora es el turno de Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Paso de ti). Esta cuenta la historia de Peter Bretter (Jason Segel) quien al ser botado por su novia, una popular actriz de televisión, Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell) por el rockero inglés Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) queda destrozado y decide irse de retiro a Hawaii. Para su mala suerte en el mismo hotel, en el cuarto de al lado están la ex y su nuevo novio.

La cita apela al sentido de vulnerabilidad y el dolor del abandono por el que todos hemos pasado. Si bien, no es la mejor cinta de la fabrica Apatow, si cuenta con buenas escenas y una actuación sobresaliente de Segel. Una buena opción para relajarte y dejarte llevar al mundo loser.

The film appeals to the sense of vulnerability and pain of abandonment we have all been through. While it is not Apatow’s best work, there are good scenes and a great performance

by Segel. A good option to relax and let yourself go in loser land.

El enemigo a vencer son los Spywares, cuyos objetivos son el asedio y espionaje virtual del comportamiento del cibernauta, y se benefician al conocer o vender información personal (e-mail, passwords, páginas que frecuentamos, descargas, etc.). Un hombre cansado de Londres es un hombre cansado de la vida”. Lo afirmó el escritor Samuel Johnson hace más de 200 años. Desde entonces, la capital inglesa ha cambiado de manera constante e irreconocible. Pero aún reúne numerosas características de las elogiadas por Johnson.

Londres hoy, es una ciudad diferente, cosmopolita, creativa e internacional.

Para los que radican en la ciudad más grande de Europa, la realidad tal vez sea distinta, caótica, contaminada, costosa y lluviosa. La capital inglesa sofoca de vez en cuando a sus más de diez millones de residentes: como cualquier metrópoli de este tamaño. For those who live in Europe’s biggest city, the reality may be different. Chaotic, contaminated, expensive and rainy, the English capital can be weary for its more than ten million residents.

Like any metropolis of its size. However, for a city break or short visit, the place is anything but tiring. London is a labyrinth of old streets, a sea of nationalities, an endless hub of ideas and innovations.

If you’re looking to escape the downtown chaos, Hampstead Heath, in the north of the city, is another good option, while a pint of beer by the river Thames at Richmond is the perfect remedy on a hot and sweaty day in the city (which do occur now and again!)

Places London is not a cheap city. However, there are options for the low budget traveller. Ace Hostel (Gunterstone Road) in Kensington has beds available from 17 pounds per night. Central Hostel (Princes Square), is even cheaper (from 7 pounds per night) and is right in the heart of the city.

Existe una puerta dimensional en el corazón de Gracia, exactamente en la calle Diluvi, en el tramo entre Torrent de l’Olla y la plaza Rius i Taulet (ahora plaza de la Vila de Gràcia). Durante el día, este extraño fenómeno ofrece un aspecto de lo más inocente. Para camuflarse toma la forma de un típico bar de carajillos, no precisamente de diseño, llamado La Gaviota, en el que raras veces se ven más de tres o cuatro señores en la barra, mientras la sala del fondo, ocupada por cinco o seis mesas, permanece solitaria. Un local como cualquier otro, incluso más decaído que la mayoría. Pero de noche, al entrar en La Gaviota se encuentra uno con un fiestorro considerable, integrado por varias decenas de abducidos que se

muestran entusiasmados en esta dimensión paralela, bailando y riendo a carcajadas como pocas veces se ha visto en sitios tan sencillos como éste. Entonces comprende uno que aquí debe haber algo más que un simple bar. Serán las canciones de Abba, Queen, Boney M y demás popes del pop/rock más deliciosamente kitsch; será que los camareros y hasta el dueño participan en la juerga; será que algunos parroquianos se sienten libres de pasar detrás de la barra a servirse ellos mismos…

Quién sabe; el caso es que, por las noches, La Gaviota es otro mundo, todo un microuniverso de alegría y desenfreno. Sin diseño, sin focos, sin proyecciones, sin bolas de espejo. No hacen falta.

complete with several dozen abductees enthused by this parallel dimension, dancing and laughing out loud as rarely seen in places as simple as this one. It is then that one understands that this is more than just a simple bar. Is it the songs of Abba, Queen, Boney M and other deliciously kitsch acts? Is it the fact that the waiters and even the owner are part of the party? Or that some of the regulars feel free to step behind the bar and serve themselves a drink…? Who knows; the thing is that, by night, La Gaviota is another world, a micro-universe of joy and debauchery. With no design, no light bulbs, no projections or mirror balls. They’re not needed.

During the day, this strange phenomenon could hardly be more innocent. To camouflage itself, it takes the form of a typical carajillo bar –although not exactly in terms of design– called La Gaviota, in which rarely are more than three of four men seen at the bar, while the back part, with six or seven tables, remains empty. It’s a bar like any other, although even more ramshackle than most. But by night, enter La Gaviota and you will find quite a party,

Empezaremos en Manolo Bar (Lancaster, 3) este bar es punto de encuentro para los skaters y los que salen por el Raval.

Decoración underground sencilla, con una larga barra y pequeñas mesas donde puedes tomarte unas cuatro cervezas a dos y medio euros, mientras disfrutas de los videos de skate que proyectan en la pared al final del bar. Todo esto englobado por el murmullo y risas de la gente en un ambiente cool y lo mas hip del momento; hay sesiones los martes y viernes, una mezcla de revival, indie- rock, funky y rock underground. Podrás encontrar los free pass (until 2 am.) para el Moog .

Los jueves, programación especial, por aquí han pasado Djs como los señores Jeff Mills y Richie Hawtin. Una vez que conozcas del Moog ya nunca lo podrás olvidar. Es una explosión de buena música, ritmos frenéticos, ambiente incansable y lugar perfecto para una buena catarsis.

Y con los últimos 10€ nos adentramos de nuevo en el Raval por una calle estrecha y tenebrosa hasta llegar a nuestro querido y amado Moog ( Arc del teatre, 3 ). Mítico

Hay muchas opciones para una noche de 30 euros, y por esto nos encanta Barcelona, cara y barata a la vez. Por que como siempre, uno mismo es el sujeto de la diversión.

As a hot and suffocating summer full of festivals, concerts, beach days and nights of contrast and feelings awaits us, our only option is to enjoy it to the maximum and make the most of everything. And even though Barcelona is becoming one of the most expensive cities in Europe, here we give you a few alternatives on how to enjoy a fun night out for just 30 euros We will begin at Manolo Bar ( Lancaster, 3 ), a meeting place for the skaters in el Raval.

Simple underground decoration, with a long bar and small tables where you can enjoy four beers for the price of two and a half euros and watch the skate videos projected on the bar’s back wall. All of this among the murmuring and laughter of the people in a cool atmosphere; the hippest of the moment, with sessions on Tuesday and Friday, a mix of revival, indie- rock, funk and rock underground. You can get free passes (until 2 am) for the Moog.

We will continue with 20€ to Sidecar ( Plaza Real, 7 ), one of the city’s most emblematic clubs. With an outdoor terrace nestled under the great arches of the Plaza Real, the bar, with chic, minimalist decoration, also boasts a marvellous concert hall where great groups from many genres have played. This year the bar celebrates its 26th birthday. Following the unforgettable Anti-karaoke nights on Mondays in winter, the bar continues to offer a complete agenda, starting with « rrrocky Mondays » 100% rock sessions, the unmatchable « Brazelona Sessions » with the world’s new musical sounds from headline acts Wagner Pa and Andyloop, to the « D.N.A Club » with garage, new wave, freak-beat and post punk. The best of all: seeing a good gig for 5€ with a free drink, and you can still have another one!

And with the last 10€ we head back to el Raval along a dark, narrow street until we

arrive at our beloved Moog ( Arc del teatre, 3 ). Legendary for those of us who are fans of electronic music. You will enter free with the flyer which can always be found in Manolo, and you’ll still have enough money left for a couple of beers. In el Moog, two small floors mark an imaginary border between the techno music DJ Robert X and his electrifying mixes and sounds; and the sessions of Purpur, revival - disco 70s- 80s and his entertaining dances. On Thursdays, a special programme, DJs such as Jeff Mills and Richie Hawtin have played here. Once you know el Moog, you will never forget it. It is an explosion of good music, frenetic rhythms, with a tireless atmosphere and the perfect place for some good catharsis.

There are many options for a night out with 30 euros, and that’s why we love Barcelona, expensive and cheap at the same time. And as always, you are at the urban CATARSIS_ 65 centre of the fun.
