2O10 BLUE KNIGHT SOFTBALL SEASON PREVIEW Urbana University Head Softball Coach Nikki Pluger begins her 6th and final season at the helm of the Blue Knight softball program in 2010. Pluger has helped usher Urbana into the NCAA Division II era, but prior to the upcoming season, Urbana Athletic Director Doug Young announced that Pluger will be promoted to Associate A.D./Director of Compliance immediately following the 2010 softball season. Under Pluger, the softball program experienced unprecedented success. In 2007, the Blue Knights ended their NAIAera with the program's first conference championship. Pluger's teams have improved its win total in 4 of her 5 seasons in charge, including last season when the Blue Knights finished 21-24 facing a NCAA D-II schedule for the first time in school history. The Blue Knights' second 20+ win season during Pluger's reign was made even more impressive considering the strength of the team's schedule. As a newcomer to D-II, Urbana has to be flexible with its scheduling. Without a conference schedule, the Blue Knights have to be prepared to play against anyone at any given time during the course of the season. In 2009, Urbana

Head Coach Nikki Pluger

The winning run crosses the plate in near-darkness against the University of Indianapolis on April 2, 2009. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 12th inning, junior Brittany Heunen hit an RBI double, ending an epic pitchers’ duel. Sophomore Tami Lasley pitched all 12 innings for the win. She didn’t allow a run to score until the top of the 8th, but the Blue Knights answered in bottom of the 8th with a RBI fielder’s choice from junior Linsey Manning. The Blue Knights and Greyhounds will meet again in 2010. Indy enters the season ranked 5th in the country in NCAA Division II.

played more than 30 games against D-II opponents, including 6 against teams in the national rankings. The Blue Knights even scored a 12-inning 2-1 win over national powerhouse Indianapolis last season. The win came in the midst of a stretch that featured 14 games over 9 days. That's just one example of the scheduling hardships that face newcomers like Urbana. In its second season against D-II competition, the Blue Knights' schedule is even more difficult. In 2010, the team has scheduled 38 games against D-II opponents, including 7 against teams receiving votes in the preseason poll. On Spring Break in Kissimmee, Florida, the Blue Knights will face last year's national champions from Lock Haven University. Lock Haven finished 51-6 in 2009 and also won the 2006 National Championship. Urbana will take on two teams currently in the top 10, including #5 Indianapolis and #10 Saginaw Valley State. The team made a strong first impression in 2009, but Coach Pluger and the Blue Knights certainly didn't shy away from making an even stronger impression in 2010.

The Blue Knights have plenty to be optimistic about in 2010, but they will also have the tough task of replacing three talented seniors. On the bright side, the team returns starters at 6 of the 8 positions on the field, and 2 of the top 3 pitchers have returned, but the Blue Knights lose All-Independent First Team Shortstop Erica Schroeder, 3-year starting centerfielder Jessica Tuttle, and staff ace and career wins leader Katie Cramer. The Blue Knights believe they have three new seniors up to the unenviable task of replacing last year's terrific trio. Seniors Linsey Manning, Brittany Heunen and Jessie Swinderman will cap their careers at the same time as their head coach, and all four hope to push the program to new heights before calling it quits. All-Independent Second Team Catcher Linsey Manning returns after posting one of the single best seasons in program history. Manning set a single season record for home runs with 9, becoming the all-time Urbana leader with 16 career homers. She hit .281 while collecting 12 doubles, 44 RBIs, and leading the team in total bases, slugging percentage and walks.

2O10 BLUE KNIGHT SOFTBALL SEASON PREVIEW finished with a 4-3 record on the mound in 2009 while leading the team in relief appearances with 13.

Senior Brittany Heunen

Fellow senior Brittany Heunen will patrol left field for the fourth straight season. Heunen has started 128 out of a possible 129 games during her 3-year career. She enters her senior season with exactly 100 hits. She also has several school records in her sights, including career records for games played, stolen bases, runs scored, walks and sacrifices. Heunen hit .308 during a sophomore campaign that saw her named Second Team All-AMC. She began her Blue Knight career with a bang, belting a 3-run home run in her first collegiate at-bat, and she would like to go out with another big bang. Heunen and Manning have an opportunity to be a part of more wins than any other Blue Knight softball players in school history. The last of the Urbana seniors is 3-year pitcher Jessie Swinderman. Swinderman joined the Blue Knights prior to her sophomore season after spending a year in West Virginia with West Liberty State. The righty has made 32 appearances for the team over the past 2 years, but with the departure of Cramer, she will be asked to throw even more innings than she has in years past. Swinderman

Sharing the bulk of the pitching duties with Swinderman will be junior Tami Lasley and freshman Chelsea Mead. Lasley led the team in wins and innings pitched last season. She finished 9-8 with a team-low 2.33 ERA in 22 appearances, including 17 starts. Lasley also pitched all 12 innings in the Blue Knights' 2-1 upset over Indianapolis last season. Lasley's value will extend off the mound this season as well. In games she does not pitch, Lasley will probably play shortstop, replacing the departed Schroeder. Lasley could also see significant time as the team's designated player as it will be difficult to leave her bat out of the middle of the lineup. Lasley hit .273 in part-time duty as designated player last season. The team finished with a winning record with Lasley in the lineup. Mead will help fill the void left by Cramer. The freshman righty will be used in a variety of roles that include relief work as well as spot starts. She also has some

experience at third base and could provide some valuable depth at that position. Speaking of the hot corner, super sophomore Tieana Steele will return to her starting gig at third base after a stellar freshman campaign. In 23 starts at the position last year, Steele hit .275 with 3 home runs and 21 RBIs. Her clutch bat helped her finish 3rd on the team in RBIs desite starting just over half the team's games. Steele hit .529 with runners in scoring position, and she will likely do a lot of her damage from the middle of the lineup again in 2010. Filling the hole at shortstop will be a combination of players. Lasley will get the call on most days she does not pitch, but when the ace is on the mound, the Blue Knights will rely on a couple of talented newcomers. Freshman Heather Hakola will be thrown into the mix immediately, and sophomore Gina Palmer will help ease the transition. Palmer backed up Schroeder at the position in 2009, and she

2O10 BLUE KNIGHT SOFTBALL SEASON PREVIEW may be ready for an expanded role in her second year with the squad. Experience won't be a problem on the right side of the Blue Knight infield. Sophomore Brooke Shultz returns to play second base after leading the team in batting average and on-base percentage in her rookie campaign. Shultz hit .365 as a true freshman, and she finished third on the team with 9 stolen bases. Look for Shultz's speed at the top of the lineup in 2010. A couple of juniors will split time at first base for the third straight season. Since they arrived as freshmen in 2008, the duo of Maria Hendricks and Kayla Nenninger have worked well as a team at the position. Often, the two will take turns manning the position in different games of a doubleheader. If one gets the start, then the other is always available to pinch hit, and the team is always better defensively with each of them in the lineup. Hendricks (.990) and Nenninger (.973) are currently ranked 1st and 3rd all-time in career fielding percentage at Urbana.

Junior Kayla Nenninger

The Blue Knights final question mark lies in the outfield. Four-year starter Heunen is locked in at left, but their will be some early season scrambling to figure out exactly who will replace Tuttle in center field. Last year, freshmen Carly Ivan and Chelsea Riley split time in right field. Riley came on strong at the end of the year, hitting .361 in 13 starts to push Ivan for more playing time. Each will battle with incoming freshmen Bridgette Barney and Jesse Nenninger for playing time in the two remaining outfield slots. All four bring speed to the lineup, and the winner of this battle might be whoever has the hot hand. The young and talented group will also be available for pinch hitting and pinch running duties, adding much needed depth to the Blue Knights' bench.

a lineup already stocked with experience from top to bottom. Top-ranked D-II opponents. Spring Break in Florida. A program on the rise. Talented newcomers, and a swan song for three accomplished seniors and one very successful head coach. As you can see, the Blue Knights have plenty to be excited about in 2010. Now, it's time to bring on the sunshine and play ball.

The Blue Knights also have an ace in the hole to call upon when needed. Sophomore transfer Megan Anderson comes to Urbana after spending a season at Wallace State Community College. Anderson has plenty of experience as a catcher and a utility player. She played in 38 games as a freshman last season, hitting .339 with 10 doubles and 3 home runs. Anderson slugged .504 in the middle of the lineup and posted a .975 fielding percentage behind the dish. Adding Anderson's pop to the lineup will take nothing away from

BLUE KNIGHT HEAD COACH NIKKI PLUGER (TOLEDO ‘97) Nicole Pluger has put Blue Knight softball on the proverbial map. Entering her 6th season as Urbana's head softball coach, she led Urbana to back-to-back Region IX tournaments in 2007-08, and she has improved the team's win total in 4 of her 5 seasons at the helm. Heading into the 2008 season her squad attained an NAIA No. 29 preseason ranking, and in 2007 her softball team accomplished a feat no other team at Urbana has before; the Blue Knights won the American Mideast Conference South Division regular season championship. Pluger was named AMC and NAIA Region IX Coach of the Year, while six of her players earned all-AMC accolades, including first team honors for senior shortstop Katie Mallett. In five seasons Pluger has had 26 players named all-conference, 1 player named All-Region (Mallett in '06), and 1 player named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic AllAmerican Team (Jackie Masur in '08). Her career record after 6 seasons is 91111, after notching her 2nd 20-win season in 2009. Pluger, of Dayton, Ohio, served as an assistant softball coach for Sheila Nahrgang at Wright State University from 1998 to 2004 where she helped guide the WSU program to some of its most successful seasons. The 2003 Raiders won the Horizon League tournament, defeating the No. 1, 2, 4 and 6 seeds. Then the Wright State softball team made history by becoming the first eighth seed to ever win a game at the NCAA Regional tournament, defeating Missouri, 3-1. The Raiders won 169 games over her career, including 36 victories in 2000, a school record for wins in a single season. Pluger mentored 11 all-conference athletes, and

four all-Great Lakes Region selections (Amber Kolle, Michelle Demmitt, Annie Divac and Nikki Scott). Pluger served as an academic advisor and her players got it done in the classroom as well as they did on the field. The Raiders had the 13th best grade point average in the nation for a Division I program in 2002. Prior to her stint at WSU, Pluger coached three years at the University of Toledo. In her first season with the Rockets she created and implemented a recruiting program, working as a graduate assistant. She was named interim head coach at Toledo in the fall of 1997 and led the squad to a winning season. She then served as an assistant coach the remainder of the season until 1998. Pluger has worked several softball clinics including: Kent State University, Eastern Kentucky University, Wright State Summer and Winter Softball Camps, University of Toledo, Ottawa Hills Softball Recreation Camp, Tom Judson's Pitching and Catching Camps in Grand Rapids, Mich. She also hosted her own youth camp along with Bill Van Horn in Kent City, Mich. Pluger, a native of Grand Rapids, Mich., was a four-year letter winner on the University of Toledo softball team. She was an all-MAC shortstop for the Rockets, which led the nation in double plays in NCAA Division I during her junior season. She earned her bachelor of arts degree in commercial recreation from Toledo. Pluger played her high school softball at Northview, where she was a two-time all-conference, all-District and all-State selection. Northview won the 1991 Michigan High School state championship her junior year. Pluger had a .402 career batting average and she holds the school record for career runs scored (117). She was also a member of the illustrious Northview 30-30-30 Club her sophomore, junior and senior years in which she had at least 30 hits, 30 runs and 30 RBIs. Nicole is the daughter of Gerald and Patricia Pluger of Grand Rapids, Mich.

One of our former students, Tom Hennon, has been a crew member on the space shuttle Atlantis, and flown three space missions! The University of Kansas Women’s Resource Center is named after an Urbana alumnae? Dr. Emily Taylor was the original founder of a women’s higher education development program from which OVER 100 women have gone to become college or university presidents or chancellors! An Urbana alumnae was President of the West Virginia Institute of Technology and led them to become one of the best rated comprehensive universities in the country? Dr. Karen LaRoe recently retired and is now on the Urbana University Board of Trustees.
