2O10 BLUE KNIGHT BASEBALL SEASON PREVIEW After posting back-to-back winning seasons in his first two years at the helm of the Urbana University baseball program, Head Coach Mike Goldschmidt's returns for a third season in 2010. Last year's win total dipped slightly as the Blue Knights jumped from the NAIA to NCAA Division II, but now that Goldschmidt and the Blue Knights have a season of D-II competition under their belt, the team appears primed for a breakout season. "I think we have outstanding leadership and a different work ethic in our studentathletes this year," explains Goldschmidt. "There aren't a lot of egos or selfishness that I think hurt us in '09. As long as we continue to improve, we could have a very rewarding season." Most of the pitching staff and position players return from a team that finished 23-21-1 last season giving the Blue Knights a lot to look forward to in 2010. Urbana returns 7 pitchers and 7 regular starters from its lineup. However, the team will need to work even harder this year to replace the 2009 D-II Independent CoPlayer of the Year, graduated senior Jordan Baker. Baker finished his 2009 season with the highest batting average in NCAA D-I or DII. He hit .497 with a school record 15 home runs, 61 RBIs, and 58 runs scored. "Losing Jordan Baker takes a lot out of our lineup," laments Goldschmidt. "You can't replace the numbers he put up for us, but we feel like we've added depth and speed. We feel we are so much stronger from top to bottom." The addition of 3 transfers, 13 freshmen, and a medical redshirt senior back up Goldschmidt's claim of more depth. These newcomers will help fill the gaps left behind when Baker and others departed, and the 14 returning Blue Knights have already proven they have the talent and the experience to improve upon the 23 wins from last season. "Coach Tim King recruited a very strong class," declares Goldschmidt. "With the addition of our transfers and the depth and

experience we have returning, we are excited about this group." Goldschmidt adds, "Offensively, I really like this team. I'm not sure yet where we are or will be defensively, but we are much improved on offense as well as on the mound." THE BLUE KNIGHT PITCHING STAFF The Urbana pitching staff is one of the most experienced groups to come through this program in awhile. From the four veteran seniors all the way down to a couple of experienced sophomores, this staff will never be short on familiarity on the mound.

at Oakland City last season. He also led the Blue Knights with 10 starts, making him the most experienced starter on the staff with 22 career starts at Urbana. Shane Pfouts (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake HS) made 16 appearances for Urbana last year, including 4 starts. He ended the year an even 3-3 with a 5.80 ERA. The fifth-year senior is on pace to break the school record for relief appearances this season. He needs to appear in just 8 more games as a reliever to sit atop the list. Nick Stanovich (Lima, Ohio/

The senior foursome includes Dustin Lacy, Cody Lawhorn, Shane Pfouts, and Nick Stanovich. In the second half of 2009, Lacy (Beavercreek, Ohio/ Beavercreek HS/Sinclair C.C.) was outstanding on the mound for the Blue Knights. He finished the season with a 5-3 record, 4.47 ERA, and 47 K, but he won his final 5 decisions, all on the road. Cody Lawhorn (Frankfort, Ohio/Zane Trace HS/Rio Grande University) is looking to return to his sophomore form after having a rough junior season. However, Lawhorn showed a glimpse of what he's capable of by tossing a no-hitter

2O10 BLUE KNIGHT BASEBALL SEASON PREVIEW The freshman joining the Blue Knight staff for the 2010 season are Tyler Bader (Southgate, Kentucky/Newport Central Catholic HS), Gary Banks (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS), Garrett Clark (Newark, Ohio/Newark Catholic HS), Joey Cole (Davie, Florida/Archbishop McCarthy HS), Brian Davis (Marion, Ohio/ Harding HS), Jake Kenney (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS), Sam McWhorter (East Sparta, Ohio/Canton South HS), and Tom Piatt (Springfield, Ohio/Kenton Ridge HS). Each has a chance to battle for innings in their first campaign.

Senior Matt Murphy

Lima Central Catholic HS/Rio Grande University) battled arm injuries in 2009, seeing action in just 4 games for Urbana. A healthy return would give the Blue Knights another strong right-handed option out of the bullpen in 2010. The lone junior on the pitching staff is Wes Rehmert (West Alexandria, Ohio/ Twin Valley South HS/Sinclair C.C.) Rehmert led the Blue Knights in games pitched last year with 19. He compiled a 5-4 record with a 5.40 ERA. He also tied for the team lead with 3 saves after converting to the team's closer in the latter part of the season. The sophomores are Brandon Hamilton, Julius Storey, and Justin Cohen. As a freshman, Hamilton (St. Petersburg, Florida/Canterbury HS) went 3-3 with 3 saves and had a 6.20 ERA in a variety of roles for the Blue Knights. Storey (Springfield, Ohio/North HS) made 5 appearances out of the bullpen for Urbana as a freshman. He will have an expanded role in his sophomore campaign. Cohen (Coral Springs, Florida/ Coral Springs HS) is a transfer from Webber International University, a strong NAIA program in Florida. He is just beginning his first season with Urbana, and the coaching staff hasn't learned exactly where the righty will fit in this year.

"Coach Bret Miller has really worked on changing our mental make-up on the mound, and we saw some results in the fall," explains Coach Goldschmidt. "Real improvements were seen in our preseason workouts. Lacy, Lawhorn, Rehmert and Hamilton will start the season as our weekend starters. Pfouts, Stanovich and Storey will pick up innings out of the bullpen in a variety of roles, as will Cohen and several of our freshmen. We are just going to have to use the early part of the season to find roles for our younger talent. I really think the top half of the staff will produce. It's going to be interesting to see how our bullpen and unproven pitchers perform."

"Brad and Tyler caught a lot of innings last season because of our lack of depth at the catching position last year," says Goldschmidt. "We're hoping the addition of Mays and Allen will push each player to become the best he can be behind the dish. We really have to do a better job this year at handling our pitching staff. That will be our focus, and I think we have already seen some improvements."

THE BLUE KNIGHT CATCHERS

THE BLUE KNIGHT INFIELDERS

The catching position consists of two returning starters and two newcomers to the Blue Knight baseball program. Junior Brad Cockerill (Washington Court House, Ohio/Miami Trace HS) and sophomore Tyler Rinker (Springfield, Ohio/Kenton Ridge HS) split the duties behind the dish for Urbana last season. Cockerill started 22 games, playing in 34 while hitting .264 with 10 RBIs. Rinker started 24 games, playing in 33 games while hitting .333, with 5 doubles and 17 RBIs. Miami University-Hamilton junior transfer Matt Mays (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton HS) will compete for some time behind the plate immediately, and freshman Josh Allen (Farmersville, Ohio/Valley View HS) will add much needed depth to the backstop position in 2010.

The infield returns a lot of experience in 2010, but the unit will also have to replace Baker at first base and Russ Chambers at third base (.421, 15 doubles, 5 HRs, 50 RBIs). The seniors who are up to that task include Owen Donelon, Steve Froese, Kurt Lancaster, Matt Murphy, and David Patz. Donelon (Fairview Park, Ohio/Saint Edward HS/John Carroll University) will primarily be used in the designated hitter role, but he could see some time at first base. In 2009, he hit .320 with 9 doubles and 21 RBIs. Steve Froese (Alymer, Ontario/East Elgin HS/Genesee C.C.) will return for his final season after receiving a medical redshirt in 2009. Froese will see time at shortstop and third base and provide offense in the middle of the lineup. Froese was the Blue Knights' cleanup hitter before a knee injury ended his season after just 10 games. Kurt

2O10 BLUE KNIGHT BASEBALL SEASON PREVIEW Lancaster (St. Petersburg, Florida/ Canterbury HS/Eckerd College) started 37 games at second base last year after Froese's injury. He will provide depth to a solid core of middle infielders. Lancaster hit .233 and showed some pop with 5 home runs and 20 RBIs. Matt Murphy (Versailles, Ohio/Versailles HS) was one of three players to start every game last season. He has been the Blue Knights starting shortstop the past two years, but he could play a variety or roles in 2010. Murphy hit .335 with 8 doubles, 4 homers, and 27 RBIs with a school-record 27 stolen bases from the lead-off spot. Murphy will replace some of the power lost with Baker and Chambers by moving down to the middle of the line-up. David Patz (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights HS) will have an opportunity to get increased playing time at 1st base and in the DH role. Patz hit .241 with 2 doubles and 6 RBIs in limited ‘09 action. Along with the 5 seniors, Sinclair Community College transfer Trace Fowler (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton HS) has provided a lot of competition to the middle infield positions. The left-handed hitting Fowler will see time at shortstop and second base for the Blue Knights. The sophomore class consists of Devin Bowles (Dayton, Ohio/Stebbins HS) and Muskingum transfer Kyle Studer (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster HS). This duo will provide added depth and talent

up the middle. The freshmen infielders on the Blue Knight roster are Greg Liming (Hamersville, Ohio/Western Brown HS), Tray Sanderson (Bradford, Ohio/Bradford HS) and redshirt freshman Andrew Smith (Lewisburg, Ohio/Tri-County North HS). Liming will see some time at first base and designated hitter. Sanderson and Smith will give depth at both the corners and in the middle. "We have a tremendous group of infielders who will provide us with a lot of different options to put on the field, creating match-up problems for our opponents," explains Goldschmidt. "Owen, Steve, Matt and David have been here with me since my beginning at Urbana, and I really want to see the hard work and dedication these guys have put in play out in a rewarding finale. They have shown leadership and provided direction for our young players to keep building the program in the direction we want to head." THE BLUE KNIGHT OUTFIELDERS One senior, one junior, two sophomores and three freshmen will compose the framework of the Blue Knights' outfield in 2010. The lone senior, Andrew Harrell (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele HS), will roam left field this season after starting 43 games on the right side in 2009. Harrell hit .297 with 40 runs scored and 22 RBIs as a junior. Off the field, Harrell is a distinguished student, receiving NAIA Academic All-American honors two years ago. He has continued to keep his marks around a 4.0 GPA each of the past two years in the transitional stage to the NCAA. Two-year starter Zach Roll (Kingston, Ohio/Zane Trace HS/Rio Grande University) will roam centerfield again in 2010 after starting 43 games there last year. Roll was third on the team in hitting at .335 with 10 doubles, 5 home runs and 27 RBIs. The two Taylor's, Taylor Griebel (Amanda, Ohio/AmandaClearcreek HS) and Taylor Simpson (Monroe, Ohio/Lemon-Monroe HS), make up the sophomore class of outfielders. Griebel and Simpson both saw limited action as freshmen, and both

are competing for the right field position. Freshmen Aaron Bingham (New Lebanon, Ohio/Dixie HS), Mike Romanowski (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester HS) and pitcher/outfielder Jake Kenney give Urbana added depth and competition at the outfield spots. This group also provides much needed speed, defense and pop to the lineup. Coach Goldschmidt has this to say about his 2010 outfielders, "Andrew is what a studentathlete should strive to be. He does everything you ask him to do, and he's a leader on and off the field. Zach improved so much the second half of the season offensively. His arm and range are huge for us in the outfield. The only spot that worries me right now is right field. It's completely open for whoever wants it. It will be interesting to see that battle play out in the early part of the season." On paper, that is the 2010 Urbana University baseball team. The latest version of the Blue Knights possess plenty of experience, leadership and talent from a program that is becoming more and more familiar with winning. Four straight winning seasons have bred success, and now the expectations are rising. In each of Coach Goldschmidt's first two seasons, his Blue Knights have upset a Division I opponent (Dayton in '08, Chicago State in '09). Last year, the team scored wins against top-30 opponents in D-II and showed they are capable of hanging with some of the top programs in the country at the D-II level. The 2010 schedule boasts even more top competition which will set the stage for this program to take the next step towards national notoriety.

2O10 MEDIA GUIDE

BLUE KNIGHT HEAD COACH MIKE GOLDSCHMIDT Mike Goldschmidt begins his third season at the helm of the Urbana University baseball program in 2010. Goldschmidt took over the Blue Knight baseball program on August 1, 2007 and in a span of 10 months, he guided Urbana University to a win over an NCAA Division I team, a ranking as high as No. 3 in Region IX, the first NAIA Region IX Tournament victory in the history of the program, and the first Blue Knight baseball player to sign with a major league baseball organization. Goldschmidt’s program accomplished all of this and finished with a 28-21 overall record during his first campaign in charge. Urbana was picked to finish 8th in the preseason American Mideast Conference poll in 2008, but the Blue Knights surprised many, finishing 4th to earn a berth to the Region IX tournament where they shut out top-seeded Malone College, 4-0 – which happened to be the only shut out the Pioneers’ suffered all season. Urbana advanced to postseason play by sweeping the last two games against World Series qualifier Ohio Dominican University. “I’m proud of the way we finished the 2008 season,” said Goldschmidt. “Sweeping ODU to make the tournament was the most rewarding. It was a culmination of the whole season; all the guys’ hard work and battling through adversity. “Then we beat Malone to earn the first Region IX win in school history,” he added. “That was a proud win for this program.” After a successful 2008, the Blue Knights baseball program had to completely start over from scratch with the transition to NCAA Division II in 2009. Facing a stronger schedule stacked with several games against top-30 competition, Goldschmidt guided the Blue Knights to another winning season, finishing 23-21-1. The team earned its second win in program history over a Division I team when they defeated Chicago State University on April 4, 2009. The win came exactly one year to the day after Goldschmidt's 200th career win (a 76 10-inning win over Walsh on April 4, 2008). Goldschmidt enters 2010 with a 51-42-1 mark in his 2 seasons at Urbana. In 7 seasons coaching at the collegiate level, Goldschmidt Mike Goldschmidt's Caree

is 240-134-1 for a .641 winning percentage. The team graduated three pitchers and three 2009, including the NCAA Division II Independent Co-Player of the Year Jordan Baker. Baker led the nation in D-I and D-II in batting average (.497) and set several school records after arguably the best season in school history. Replacing him and the other seniors will be difficult, but Goldschmidt has proven over and over again that he is more than capable of overcoming adversity. After the 2008 season, the Blue Knights unexpectedly lost AMC Pitcher of the Year Jaeson Hudnall when the junior signed a free agent contract with the Kansas City Royals in June of 2008. With the move to NCAA Division II behind them, Goldschmidt's team is excited about raising the bar in 2010. After 4 straight winning seasons, the program appears primed and ready to have a breakout year and take off in 2010. In order to be the best, Goldschmidt is ready to take on the best in D-II, never shying away from the top competition in the country. The Blue Knights knocked off #30 Montevallo on Spring Break in 2009, and they showed they were capable of hanging with some of the other top caliber teams. “Overall, I think it was a solid first year,” he said. “I really look forward to the move to NCAA Division II level. The competition is so strong in this region. But I really believe that this can be a great baseball program with the way things are set up here at Urbana University.” Prior to coming to Urbana University, Goldschmidt coached 5 seasons at Sinclair Community College, winning a league title and tying or breaking the school record for wins in his final 3 seasons.
