2O11 BLUE KNIGHT SOFTBALL SEASON PREVIEW The 2011 season begins a new era of Urbana University softball. New faces, new affiliations and even new uniforms will usher the program into its new home in NCAA Division II. After a three-year transitional period, the Blue Knights can shift their focus towards post-season berths and national accolades. But full-fledged D-II membership isn’t the only major change experienced by the softball program this off-season. For the first time in seven years, Coach Nikki Pluger will not head the Blue Knights’ softball program after relinquishing her coaching duties to become the University’s Associate Athletic Director of Compliance. Replacing Pluger is first-year Head Coach Danielle Lowe. Fortunately, Lowe is no stranger to NCAA Division II softball. The Michigan native has spent the past seven years playing and coaching at the University of Findlay, a wellestablished D-II program in the same region as Urbana. In addition to her experience at this level in this area, Lowe’s also had plenty of time to prepare for her first head coaching gig as she was hired immediately after last season concluded. With Pluger’s impending promotion, Lowe even had an opportunity to take in a Blue Knight softball game during the hiring process last spring. The additional time, along with the ability to tap into Pluger’s knowledge and experience, has allowed the first-time head coach to hit the ground running in her new position. Lowe’s head start will come in handy as she attempts to continue Pluger’s reign, which was the most successful six-year stint in the softball team’s history. Pluger helped the Blue Knights capture the program’s first conference title in 2007, and she racked up a school best 106 wins during her tenure. Unfortunately, in Pluger’s final spring, the team struggled to collect victories, especially on the road. The Blue Knights’ finished a disappointing 15-29, including a 4-15 mark on the road. The 6-win drop-off was the worst since 2003, the season before Pluger took control. According to Coach Lowe, showing improvement will be the team’s primary focus in 2011. “We want to play our game and not beat ourselves,” stresses Coach Lowe. “If we can do
that and stay healthy, then we will improve on last season’s record.”
losing just two to graduation, but those two losses will be difficult to replace.
Lowe added, “The only time we lost in the fall is when we beat ourselves with unforced errors and mental mistakes. A lot of our effort this fall and winter has been focused on eliminating these errors, and if we do that this season, our overall record should improve.”
Gone are seniors Brittany Heunen and Jessie Swinderman. Heunen was an all-conference performer and four-year starter in left field. For a school-record 163 games, Heunen was the Blue Knights’ rock in left and a tough out in the middle of Urbana’s lineup. Swinderman came on strong on the mound for the Blue Knights, winning 6 games last season, including two complete game shutouts in a team-high 21 starts.
Another difficult factor to overcome in the Urbana’s new D-II world is scheduling. As a newcomer to D-II, Urbana is currently an independent until a conference home can be found in the near-future. As an independent, the softball program is forced to fill out a full 50game schedule without the assistance of a builtin conference slate. Simply put, this means the Blue Knights are forced to travel away from home more often against some of the top programs in the region in order to fill out a full schedule. A full fifth of the team’s games this season will be played against teams ranked in the preseason polls. Already, that’s four more games against ranked opponents than last season’s schedule. The Blue Knights finished 1-5 against ranked opponents last year. Despite the changes and challenges of a difficult schedule, the Blue Knights have plenty to be optimistic about in 2011. On the bright side, the team returns starters at every position except left field. Also, two of the top three pitchers from last season have returned. In fact, Urbana boasts 12 experienced returning letter winners after

The task of replacing the seniors’ leadership, as well as some of their production, falls first on a group of very experienced 2011 seniors and tricaptains. Seniors Tami Lasley (Union, Ohio/ Northmont HS), Maria Hendricks (Urbana, Ohio/ Urbana HS) and Kayla Nenninger (West Milton, Ohio/Milton-Union HS) have all been key players on this Urbana roster since their freshmen year in 2008. Between the three of them, they have racked up nearly 250 collegiate games of experience. That number would be much higher if not for the fact that Hendricks and Nenninger have split time at the same position for their entire collegiate careers. No one without the last name of Hendricks or Nenninger has manned first base at Urbana University since ’07, and over that time, the defensive duo has combined to post a nearly flawless .982 fielding percentage at the position in nearly 800 total chances. Entering their final seasons at UU, Hendricks and Nenninger are

ranked first and third, respectively, in career fielding percentage. Lasley enters her final season as a Blue Knight with an opportunity to go down in history as the most successful pitcher in Urbana University history. She is 8 wins shy of the school’s alltime record, a mark she exceeded as a sophomore. Also, she has a shot at setting new career records in innings pitched, complete games, and shutouts. Lasley is already UU’s career leader in strikeouts, eclipsing 150 career K’s during her junior season.
distance on the mound in Urbana’s 12-inning 21 walk-off win over national powerhouse Indianapolis, and last season she set a single season school record for pitching appearances (26) while finishing second all-time in innings pitched (144.2).
sophomore was Urbana’s third option last season. She appeared in 13 games, throwing a 27 innings as both a spot starter and a reliever. Mead finished the year with a 2-2 record and one save. Mead can also play some third base. She made four starts at the hot corner as a true freshman.
Lasley’s bat has also proven invaluable on this Blue Knight squad. The versatile veteran is inching closer to 100 career hits. She batted .283 as a junior in 43 games, appearing mostly in the Blue Knights’ #3 and #5 spots in the lineup. When she’s not pitching, Lasley often occupies Urbana’s designated player spot, but she has seen action at shortstop as well.
Speaking of the hot corner, experienced junior Tieana Steele (Chillicothe, Ohio/Zane Trace HS) will return to her starting gig at third base after stellar freshman and sophomore campaigns. Adding pop to the middle of Urbana’s lineup, Steele hit .291 last season. She tied for the team lead in home runs as a sophomore, and she’s a proven RBI machine, hitting a robust .529 with runners in scoring position as a true freshman. Newcomer Alisha Crosier (Whitehall, Ohio/ Yearling HS) is a transfer from Trine University with collegiate experience at the hot corner. The sophomore will be called on from time to time to provide a spark and spell Steele at the position.
With the departure of Swinderman and her 120+ innings of work on the mound last season, there should be plenty of available innings for underclassmen Chelsea Mead (Medway, Ohio/ Tecumseh HS), Lauren Anderson (Newark, Ohio/Newark HS) and Haley Kolmerten (West Lafayette, Ohio/Ridgeway HS). Helping the underclassmen along the way will be third-year pitching coach Jeff Eichelberger, along with a newcomer to the Blue Knight coaching staff, the recently graduated Swinderman. Anderson and Kolmerten are both freshmen looking to make an immediate impact on a team in search of a second ace. Mead is the most experienced of the bunch. The right-handed
Lowe also mentions that Hendricks could see some of her first action at second base this season. The move could help improve the Blue Knights’ defense up the middle, where Lowe has stressed the importance of making the routine play and communicating on defense. As the all-time leader in career fielding percentage at UU, Hendricks certainly has plenty of experience and the glove work to succeed at the position.
Lasley should see plenty of opportunities to add to her career totals, as she is the only pitcher on Urbana’s roster with more than 30 innings of experience at the collegiate level. “We are counting on Tami to lead us,” explains Coach Lowe. “The rest of our pitching staff lacks the big-game experience that she has. Our underclassmen and freshmen pitchers will have to step up as well, but we know we can count on Tami in big spots.” In years past, Lasley has shown she can handle a heavy workload. As a sophomore, she went the
A trio of veteran players will share the all-important middle infield duties for the Blue Knights in 2011. Junior Brooke Shultz (Lima, Ohio/Shawnee HS) has the most experience up the middle for Urbana, but she missed most of the fall softball season while starring for the Blue Knights’ soccer team. Catching up should not be a problem for the threeyear starter who led the team in batting average and on-base percentage as a rookie second baseman in 2009. As a sophomore, Shultz batted leadoff and started all 44 games for the Blue Knights, splitting the middle infield duties with first-year player Heather Hakola (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville HS). Hakola posted the better defensive stats, but Shultz’ possesses the stronger bat. She finished second on the squad in batting average last season, hitting .313 while leading Urbana in runs and stolen bases.

Another position that returns plenty of experience is the Blue Knights’ backstop. Junior Megan Risner (Urbana, Ohio/Graham HS) will again handle the majority of the team’s catching duties

2O11 BLUE KNIGHT SOFTBALL SEASON PREVIEW after playing every single inning behind the dish as a sophomore. “We need our catcher to be the most vocal part of our defense,” explains Coach Lowe. “Megan is a player that knows how to take charge.” In addition to handling the pitching staff, Risner threw out 13 potential base stealers last season, falling one short of the Urbana record. She also led the team in several offensive categories, including batting average (.345), on-base percentage (.386), slugging percentage (.500), home runs (3), doubles (13), and RBIs (30). Coach Lowe plans to keep Risner’s offensive production consistent throughout the season by giving her more rest behind the plate this year. Senior Kayla Nenninger played the position before college, and she’s spent the off-season fine-tuning her catching skills in order to spell Risner on occasion. Nenninger’s willingness to catch coupled with Hendricks’ unselfishness to learn a new position in her final season may open some opportunities for others to play first base, allowing Coach Lowe to put forth the team’s best possible lineup on a regular basis. Junior Gina Palmer (Plain City, Ohio/Jonathan Alder HS) has spent the offseason practicing the new position, adding to
Senior Kayla Nenninger
her versatility. Palmer has already acquired some experience at shortstop in her first two seasons. Also, freshman Heather Martin (London, Ohio/ Madison Plains HS) may see some time at first base, as well as behind the dish. Freeing up Risner to play other positions or to serve as the team’s designated player may boost the offense on her days off behind the plate. Risner’s catching duties at practice have also been lightened thanks to sophomore Ashley Skinner (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek HS). Skinner must sit out a year after transferring, but the versatile utility player is available to practice all season long. Urbana returns more experience at every position on the diamond in 2011 except for left field, but the Blue Knights aren’t scrambling to find a replacement. After losing the all-time school record holder in games played at the position, the Blue Knights are surprisingly comfortable in the outfield. Heunen missed twelve starts in left due to injury last season, but junior Chelsea Riley (Newark, Ohio/Lakewood HS) filled in admirably. Urbana was a respectable 5-7 in those contests. A career .285 hitter, Riley has already seen action in 50 games, so the drop-off in experience isn’t nearly as dramatic as it could be. Riley will also have plenty of help replacing Heunen’s production in the outfield. Underclassmen Carly Ivan (Dayton, Ohio/ Beavercreek HS), Bridgette Barney (Medway, Ohio/Tecumseh HS), and Jesse Nenninger (West Milton, Ohio/Milton-Union HS) all return after seeing action in the grass last season. Ivan is a three-year vet with 77 career outfield starts under her belt. Last year as a sophomore, she started all 44 games in center field. Ivan and catcher Megan Risner were the only Blue Knights to start every game at their position. Ivan’s production also increased at the plate, where she hit 82 points higher in her second year. A pair of sophomores will help split the remaining outfield duties this spring. Barney and Nenninger combined to start 27 games in right field as true freshmen. They combined to make another 27 appearances as pinch runners, pinch hitters and defensive replacements. Barney showed more pop at the plate, hitting .250 and reaching base at a .345 clip as rookie, while Nenninger turned in a flawless fielding performance as a first-year player.

“Our outfield is still young, but all four have another year of experience out there,” said Coach Lowe. “In the fall and winter, we’ve been stressing the importance of staying aggressive in the outfield. With our speed, I think we can track down more balls in the outfield than we did last year.” Lowe’s primary focus will most likely be on the team’s defense this season. Urbana averaged almost two errors per game last season, and as a team, they committed 13 more errors than their opponents. Those defensive mistakes could have easily turned a 15-29 season into a 29-15 season as the Blue Knights lost 14 games by 2 runs or less. “Our offense looked great in the fall, and I’m confident that it will once again be the strength of this team,” explains Lowe. “Our success will be determined by our defense and pitching. If everyone does their job and just makes the routine plays, we will improve upon last year’s record.” With a new head coach and a new home in NCAA Division II, the Blue Knights’ new era begins in early March with a trip to the NTC Games in Clermont, Florida over spring break. Urbana will play ten games in six days, providing an early test for a young, but experienced squad.

HEAD COACH DANIELLE LOWE (FINDLAY ‘06, M.A. ‘08) Urbana University Athletic Director Doug Young named Danielle Lowe (rhymes with “now”) the softball program's newest head coach on May 11, 2010. A first-time head coach, Lowe takes over the reigns of a program that enjoyed the most successful sixyear run in program history under Nicole Pluger, who was promoted to the role of Assistant Athletic Director of Compliance after the 2010 season. "Although we will miss Coach Pluger on the softball field, we are excited about the new direction we are headed," explained Young. "Danielle comes from a program with a proud tradition of excellence, and we look forward to the positive attributes she will bring to our program and the University." Lowe comes to Urbana from the University of Findlay where she spent four seasons as an assistant coach following three seasons as the Oilers' starting second baseman. She served as team captain as a senior while capturing all-academic accolades from the GLIAC conference. On the field, Lowe was named the team's top defensive player while batting .255 with 26 extra-base hits and 35 RBIs. During her time at Findlay, Lowe earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree. She received a Bachelor of Science in Integrated Mathematics AYA Education in December of 2006. Two years later, she completed her Master's Degree in Education, with a Human Resource Development Strand and an Emphasis on Leadership. Lowe also played a year of varsity softball at Division I Eastern Michigan University, and she's served as a head coach of the Wizards, a summer league softball organization in Toledo. Her new position at Urbana is her first collegiate head coaching gig. "I am very excited to get out on my own," said Lowe. "This is a great opportunity to get my coaching philosophies in play at a new Division II University." The 2010-11 school year will be Urbana University's first as a full-fledged NCAA Division II member. Having spent the past seven years at a Division II institution, Lowe believes her experiences at that level give her an advantage as a first-year head coach. "I feel like I'm a step ahead already because I've played and coached at the D-II level," explains Lowe. "I just can't wait to get started." After a full off-season at the helm, Lowe and the Blue Knights begin the program's NCAA D-II era in the spring of 2011. Danielle is engaged to be married to Kyle Thwaits. Originally from Jackson, Michigan, Danielle currently resides in Springfield.
