Eco Parent:

Five Ways to Recycle Less When it comes to taking care of our environment, we’ve all heard about the three Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle. We get that. Thankfully the blue bins in homes and offices have done a good job reminding us about the importance of recycling. What you may be surprised to know is that there are other equally important Rs that deserve our attention: refuse, reclaim, renew, revitalize, refurbish, rethink and redesign!

Welcome to

our new contributor Lindsay Coulter, David Suzuki’s “Queen of Green”. Read Lindsay’s Eco Parent article in each issue and online at www.urbanbaby.ca

Step 3: It’s time for a plastic diet! Buy fewer prepared foods. Buy in bulk and pack waste-free lunches. Solution: Eat a lot of yogurt from plastic tubs? Maybe it’s time to invest in a yogurt maker!

Step 4: Make your own cleaners. Stop recycling plastic tubs, jugs and spray bottles from household cleaners. Solution: To a seven-litre pail of hot water, add one cup of baking soda, 1/3-cup of salt and one cup of liquid castile soap. Use a ½-cup per load of laundry. (See more recipes at www. queenofgreen.ca) Step 5: Fix it. Ever notice how most consumer goods are

Recycling feels good although some of us may be getting too much of a good thing. How do you know if you have taken Recycling-mania a bit too far? Start with a simple test. If your blue bin is full to the brim each week, maybe you need another solution.

Rethink • Take inventory of your blue bin. (Is it full of plastic?) • Search your home for goods made with 100-percent post-consumer plastic. When searching through my home, I found a few Green Toys made from recycled plastic milk jugs, recycled plastic planks (lumber) as our walkway and an Organic Girl tub of greens. That’s it!

Refurbish and Redesign: Five Steps to Recycling Less Step 1: Shop smarter. Beware of excess packaging from all consumer goods, food, personal care products, electronics including organic, non-toxic and GMO-free items. Solution: Make toothpaste with baking soda, coconut oil and a few drops of peppermint essential oil or try brands packaged in glass (reusable) containers instead of plastic tubes in paper boxes.

Step 2: Never recycle another glass jar! They’re easy to wash (dishwasher-friendly); have an air tight seal; freeze well and don’t give off toxics like Bisphenol-A (BPA). Solution: Store leftovers and dry goods (instead of buying containers) or pack your lunch in glass jars. Note: Consider stainless steel lunch containers.

designed to fail. It seems household items have become cheaper to replace than to repair. We have become a throw-away society and often forget to check if items can be repaired. Solution: Try fixing things first. Replacement parts may only cost a few dollars. A popular trend is Repair Cafés which enlist volunteer fixers to help fix broken household items and teach basic repair skills. They help shift us from a throw-away to fix-it society. If item is beyond repair, bear in mind that most provinces in Canada have recycling programs for large and small appliances.

Research Resources to Recycle Tricky Items Not sure about which items go into municipal blue bins? A good rule to follow is: when in doubt, leave it out. For helpful resources, check your city website to learn about proper disposal for such items as polystyrene, batteries, light bulbs, electronics, plastic bags, household hazardous waste (paints and garden chemicals). Solution: Some retailers such as London Drugs have a “bring back the pack” program. Bring in the receipt and they’ll recycle cell phones, batteries, disposable cameras, small appliances and the packaging (like Styrofoam). Check the queenofgreen.ca website for my list of recycling FAQs for everything from child car seats to mattresses and drywall. If you have exhausted efforts to reuse, repair, refurbish or repurpose the item, visit davidsuzuski.org for a list of recycling resources categorized by location. • Lindsay resides in Vancouver with her two-year old son. 1 Talk about it with Your Family

Discuss with everyone as to why it is important to make an effort to go green and what impact it will have on the environment and on the family. Gather everyone’s suggestions for things the family can do to go green and plan how to take action each month.

2 Use Green Products

Regular household cleaners usually contain many harsh chemicals that are bad for the environment and bad for your family’s health. Make the switch to using green cleaning products or make your own.

3 Drive Less and Walk More

If your family is used to driving everywhere, even short distances, try to reduce your car use and walk, bike, or take public transportation. This will save on gas and lower your carbon emissions, plus get the family active.

New Tax Changes in Canada: Families

Benefit More

Being a parent means staying financiallysavvy. Knowledge prevents stress in today’s hurried world especially when it comes to managing the budget; saving money and filing your taxes. In October of 2014, the Government of Canada announced important tax changes taking place in 2015. Most of us cringe when it comes to filing our taxes or make light of the intricate details. Yet by being informed about recent changes means that you are in control of your hard-earned dollars and you can keep your money where it is most needed: in taking care of your family. While this article is not in any way intended as a replacement for financial advice, it will at least get you started in understanding what to expect.

Universal Child Care Benefit Increases One of the most notable changes- and good news for all parentsis the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) which increases by $60 for all children under the age of 17. That translates to an increase for children under six, from $100 to $160 plus an increase from no benefit to $60 monthly for children between six and 17. The federal amount for children will be eliminated in 2015, but depending on the financial brackets you and your partner are in, and whether you rely on childcare, you might or might not see significant changes in your budget. “If you are focusing just on the child-related benefit and child care expense deductions, there is definitely an added bonus,” says Denise Bernauer, bookkeeper at RIH Foundation in Kamloops. Childcare expenses were raised by $1000 for each category under age six, between age six and 17. It also applies to any child suffering from disabilities which is a welcome relief especially in low-income or single-income families struggling to make ends meet.

Bernauer, who is also a mother, emphasizes that it is a great motivation for many parents to register their kids in various fitness activities all year round”. Make sure you save all receipts from your children’s activities – most institutions can replace any lost ones, just ask – and start looking for help with taxes*. She further advises that both parents need to take into consideration how far apart they are from each other in terms of income. The larger the gap, the bigger the financial advantage. Part of the income of the higher earning parent can be transferred to the lower income or non-working parent. As a rule, a singleincome family benefits from the tax cut more than a family that has two lower incomes, even when the combined total income (before tax) is the same. Bernauer points out that with the recent changes—whether you have children or not—it is worth looking for professional help when filing your taxes. Parents are encouraged to ask questions to gain a full understanding on how the changes affect their family budgeting. •

Got a Budding Artist? The Children’s Art Tax Credit allows parents to claim a maximum of $500 per child (under 16 years of age). The credit applies to fees paid in 2014 to cover the cost of registration or membership for a child in a prescribed program of artistic, cultural, recreational, or developmental activity. More Info: www.cra-arc.gc.ca/artscredit *Pro-bono services are available. Make sure you visit the CRA site at www.cra-arc.gc.ca/volunteer and inquire about tax clinics in your areas.

Sarah Baeumler Television viewers in record numbers have been continually smitten with the genuine and charismatic personalities of Bryan and Sarah Baeumler. For several years Canadians got to know Bryan, the Geminiaward winning host, who has been educating and entertaining viewers worldwide with successive hit television shows including Leave It to Bryan. In recent years, we were introduced to Bryan’s wife, Sarah and their growing family. The couple has bravely shown how marriage, family life and renovations can go hand in hand. They managed to do it rather seamlessly and transparently along with four children in tow. Which begs the question: When did the couple find time to set up their own charity foundation? Sarah will tell you that as a couple, they have their share of disagreements and setbacks during a massive build. Somehow they keep it real. And that’s precisely what fans love about Canada’s Renovation Power Couple. Recently the two wrapped up production of House of Bryan 3. Sarah, who ran her own successful classical dance studio, has been helping her husband run their thriving, television-production and custom-home businesses. The mother of four draws on her business acumen and formal education to help build the Baeumler brand. Urbanbaby & Toddler Magazine got a chance to chat with Sarah about parenting, marriage, renovations and doing it all in front of the television cameras. UBT: How do you manage four children, a renovation and a show simutaneously? SB: I think the bottom line to all of this is that we don’t do it alone and we can’t do it alone. Bryan and I always ask for help and take advantage of the help whenever it is offered. When we are building homes we try to include the children as much as possible because the more we include them, the more they feel a part of it. That helps them understand why sometimes they have to sleep on the sofa. Bryan always spends time with the kids and talks to them about the build and what he is doing at every stage.

8 | www.urbanbaby.ca | spring 2015

UBT: Is it a concern for you to have your family on camera so much? SB: Our two youngest children were home during the entire build so they are used to the film crew. We have been fortunate to have the same film crew for nine years. The crew, to us, are like family. Our children are thrilled when it is film day. We are not the kind of family that parades the children on TV but obviously we wanted to include them. Building and renovations are what we do. It is our life. And we wanted the children to understand that. We are pretty transparent. People are familiar with the ups and downs of the build and we don’t hide any thing. We have arguments, disagreements and budget issues. I think that gives people a more realistic look at what it is like to do a build. Our kids kept us sane through the whole process.

UBT: What is your biggest challenge as a parent and of raising children in the spotlight? SB: I think the hardest thing is having your children starting to understand social media and what that is all about. The older two are becoming more aware that we are in the spotlight. We tell them you have to be comfortable and confident in the person you are. And that you have to separate yourself from what people are saying online and on social media. We like to use what we experience as an educational tool for the kids. We have nights where people don’t like the show or aren’t nice on social media. We do our best to handle those situations in a positive way. UBT: Giving back is important to you and Bryan. Tell us about the Baeumler Family Foundation. SB: We launched our charity in 2012 after realizing that there were so many families that didn’t make it on the Leave it to Bryan show. We have been inundated with requests and that has been a real eye opener for us. (www. baeumlerfamilyfoundation.com) UBT: What’s in the future for the Baeumlers? SB: We have just started working on the old part of the home where we were living. We are doing a bit more filming so you may see that on air soon. A few different projects are being discussed. Bryan and I enjoy having our viewers get a glimpse of what we do. We would like to give people the chance to see a broader scope including our custom homes and charity work with the Baeumler Family Foundation. UBT: What is your biggest joy as a parent? SB: We have two months set aside when we take time together as a family. We sit around our big fire pit and roast marshmallows and just listen to the kids. We get to see this process through their eyes. We are so fortunate that they are such great children. They take every day in stride with big smiles. As a parent, that makes you feel pretty good. •

Healthy Meal Planning:

Join the Meatless Movement You’ve likely heard that consuming meat is costly to the environment. But if you’ve been a meateater for your whole life, becoming vegetarian can seem daunting. While it does take time to sit down and create a meal plan, doing so will save you hours of stress each week. It will also save you time and money when shopping at the grocery store.

How to Use Meal Planning to Eat More Meatless Meals:

1 (14oz) can cannellini beans 1 bulb garlic ¼ cup olive oil ¼ cup lemon juice

1. Start with one vegetarian dinner a week. This is what the Meatless Mondays movement is all about. And it all comes together in about 15 minutes – perfect for busy weeknights!

2. Next, swap out an animal-based protein (such as cheese) for a plant-based protein when snacking. Many children love edamame. Find them in the freezer section and give them a quick boil, steam, or microwave. Nut butters, and the nonut versions, are long-standing kid favourites. Spread them on bread, crackers, apple slices, or celery. You’ve likely had hummus before (which of course is made from chickpeas).

3. Once you’ve got the hang of one meatless dinner and some plant-based snacks, it’s time to add a second meatless dinner to your week. Continue on this way until you find the right balance for your family. • Kristen, MSc, RD is a speaker, author and dietitian devoted to helping parents in supporting picky eaters to try new foods on their own. She is a self-proclaimed picky eater who is passionate about families eating healthy. www.kristenyarker.com

Easy White Bean Dip

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. 2. Remove the outermost skin of the garlic bulb (the loose stuff). Cut off the very top of the bulb so the tip of each clove is exposed. Rub the entire bulb with some olive oil. Wrap in tin foil, shiny-side inwards. Place on a cookie sheet or in a casserole dish.

3. Roast in the oven for approximately 45 minutes, or until the bulb gives off the distinct roasted garlic (not raw garlic) aroma and the cloves are squishy.

4. Allow to cool. 5. Drain and rinse the beans (rinsing removes some of the “magical” part of the beans). Place them in a medium-size bowl.

6. To the beans, add half the olive oil, half the lemon juice, and half of the cloves of garlic. Using a hand-held blender, blend the mixture until it’s smooth. Adding more olive oil, lemon juice and garlic to taste and to get the texture to the desired smoothness.

7. ENJOY with tortilla chips, crackers, apple slices, and raw veggies like carrots, celery and bell pepper strips. Note: Adjust the amounts of garlic, lemon juice and olive oil to match your child’s (and your) taste buds.

Provide good nutrition for your child today. And, instill a LOVE of food that lasts a lifetime. Helping Moms and Dads support their picky eaters to try new foods on their own (without being forceful or sneaky)

A Parent’s Guide to

Keeping Teeth Healthy As a parent, you have a big role in keeping your child’s teeth healthy. In doing so, you can help prevent cavities. Prevention starts at home with good eating habits and daily cleaning. As a pediatric dentist and a mother, I have witnessed the daily struggles parents face as they attempt to decipher some of the contradicting and confusing information about their child’s dental health. Baby teeth are a “big deal” as American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry slogan points out. Baby teeth (otherwise known as primary teeth) are fundamental to digestion; speech; and keeping space required for permanent teeth. They are also integral to your child’s self-esteem and overall well-being. We recommend the first dental visit take place by the age of one (or after the eruption of the first primary tooth which can be around six months). In this first appointment, your pediatric dentist is able evaluate healthy development of the dentition and identify any risk factors that could predispose your child to tooth decay.

DR. NANCY VERTEL

Certified Specialist in Pediatric Dentistry

Accepting New Patients! No Dentist Referral Needed Dr. Nancy Vertel and her staff practice holistic patient care to provide dental treatment tailored to your child's unique needs.

REMEMBER TO BOOK YOUR CHILD’S FIRST DENTAL APPOINTMENT BY AGE ONE!

In my practice, I recommend X-rays only when there is justification to do so. So for example, they may be required when the spaces between the teeth are closed; there is history of pain or if there are indicators that your child has a cavity. When X-rays are required, your dentist uses protection procedures and the lowest radiation possible according to child’s age and size. Feel free to talk to your dentist if you have any concerns or need clarification. Some parents are not comfortable with the use of fluoride on their child’s teeth. Here is what we currently know: Topical fluoride, like the one found in toothpaste or professionally-applied fluoride, is an effective and cost-effective way to prevent tooth decay. Bear in mind that there are no other sources of fluoride in BC and teeth tend to be at higher risk for cavities when topical fluoride is not present. If you are averse to using any kind of fluoride, there are other alternatives that contain a form of calcium which is the agent that helps make teeth stronger. As for snacks, I recommend that your child does not consume sticky candy and carbohydrates. I also suggest that your child has limited amounts of dried cereals; acidic drinks, dried fruits and sugary, chewable vitamins. Offer your child snack alternatives such as fresh fruits and vegetables; almonds; yogurt; cheese; water and/or plain milk. It is only natural to be concerned about the treatment process if your young child has a cavity. Your pediatric dentist will be able to guide you in selecting the best option(s) available (including mild to moderate sedation) to meet your child’s unique needs. The goal is to provide comprehensive treatment with minimum discomfort. Through close communication with your child’s dentist, you can help ensure your child has a positive experience and develops a positive outlook toward his/her own dental health. • Dr. Vertel is a certified specialist in pediatric dentistry and a mother of a six-year old boy. She divides her time between her two practices, Half Moon Dentistry for Children in Surrey, and Maple Ridge Dentistry for Kids in Maple Ridge.

Safe Sleep: Choosing

a Crib Mattress for Baby A good mattress not only makes bedtime something to look forward to, but it also supports your little one’s growing bones and ensures safety while sleeping. Shopping for your baby’s first mattress can be an overwhelming and daunting task. With so many options available, selection can get confusing. Many parents can spend months deciding on the perfect crib, bedding and overall design of the nursery – yet purchase the mattress as an afterthought. While those adorable sheets and pillows are fun and exciting for new parents, the fact remains that the crib mattress is one of the most important purchases for your baby. Babies spend 70% or more of their time on the crib mattress, and toddlers spend up to 50%. So it is crucial for you to plan their sleeping space right because the majority of the child’s growth and development occurs during sleep.

With the growing popularity of convertible cribs (cribs transition from crib to toddler bed to double bed); it’s also a great idea to find a dual-sided crib mattress that can grow with baby into his or her toddler years. It also makes sound financial sense to buy dual-sided so you only have to purchase one mattress during those high-growth years. If you decide to choose that option, bear in mind that the infant side needs to be firm while the toddler side can be a bit softer.

Select a Firm Mattress

Construction of the crib mattress is very important. Understanding the different components inside and out of the mattress is essential for your baby’s safety and comfort. Be thorough in your research. Are there any cushioning layers? What construction materials were used? Is there a flammability barrier and waterproof backing? Best quality innerspring and/ or foam mattress tend to have more coils or layers. If you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to ask your sales representative for additional information.

It is only natural to assume that babies should sleep on a soft, gentle surface like we do, but that is not the case. Since a crib mattress serves as an essential hub for growth and development, a firm, flat and even surface is recommended – particularly when your newborn becomes more active in the crib. A solid base provides the resistance necessary to strengthen and develop their muscles as they begin to push up, turn and even stand in the crib. Ask yourself: “Is it easier for me to walk on a wooden floor or a waterbed?”

Do Your Research

Examine Labels A firm mattress is also recommended to help prevent SIDS. Soft mattresses can become problematic for baby’s head or face thus increasing the chance of suffocation.

Seek Quality Construction Whether you’re searching for a foam or innerspring mattress, look for quality. You don’t have to buy the most expensive mattress but choose the best quality you can afford. Lower quality foam and innerspring mattresses may have thin, vinyl coverings that can tear or crack easily. With Higher quality choices, coverings tend to be thicker and puncture-resistant. Check for reinforced laminates which are safer. Whether you select a foam or innerspring mattress, remember firmer is better.

Ensure Proper Fitting Standard crib mattresses are 27 1/2 inches wide by 52 inches long. According to Canadian regulations, crib mattresses cannot exceed six inches in height (thickness). Additionally, there must not be a gap exceeding 3 cm (1 3/16 in) between the mattress and any sides of the crib. Push the crib mattress firmly against the sides of the crib to test this.

Always check out the label. Manufacturers are required by law to reveal what the crib mattress is made of. Don’t buy a mattress from a manufacturer or retailer that does not provide this information on the label, in-store displays, or online specifications. In fact, you should be able to find out the components of each individual layer, from cover to cover. The reputation of the manufacturer and retailer should also be considered. For a parent, there’s no better joy than watching your little one sleeping safe and sound. A proper crib mattress is one of the most important aspects to ensure a deeper, qualitative sleep for your baby. Choosing the best quality crib mattress within your budget has another bonus. Mommy and Daddy can sleep soundly too! • Terri is a crib mattress innovator and marketing expert, her dedication as a mother led her to developing technologicallyadvanced crib mattresses and founding two highly successful companies.

Q&A: Tackling the Biggest Parenting Challenges in a Positive Way

Ask Our Expert: Julie Romanowski an educated trained and certified Early Childhood Consultant. She is a children’s behaviour and discipline specialist focusing in the areas of anxiety, child development and communication with an approach that is positive and respectful.

Q: Is it possible to get my two and a half-year old son in bed without all the excuses to stay up? Please help. My husband and I are exhausted! Anne B, Burnaby

teach your child about right and wrong by putting up solid boundaries of what is acceptable and what is not. Letting your son know that if he bites you again, you stop engaging with him.

JR: Great question as this is a very common issue for many

For example, remove yourself from the play but still stay in close proximity. Turn sideways and focus on something else. You don’t want to abandon the child, but rather just briefly disengage. Wait a minute or two or until your son makes a request for you to return and play again.

parents. Children tend to push bedtimes as a way to test the boundaries. They know you are tired and they just don’t want to end the day! A positive way to ensure a successful bedtime is having a consistent bedtime routine with lights going out at the same time every night. Acknowledging how your son is feeling can make a HUGE difference. Try repeating back to him what he wants and that you know he would like something else, but always end with the fact that it IS bedtime. For example, “I know it would be nice to have more water and another pillow fluff but now it’s time to sleep. Before long, he will drift into dreamland.

Q: How can I get rid of the early-morning fights I have with

my three-year old daughter about the clothes she is going to wear to daycare. Please help make mornings easier! Crystal W, Surrey

Offer to play with him again and when he agrees, let him know your boundary once again. Say: “Remember, no biting, I don’t like it”. Continue with this technique each and every time to remain consistent. This may take several attempts before your child understands the new boundary and that you are serious about it. Your child will learn about right and wrong from your consistent, yet supportive approach. • Julie is a mom, an Early Childhood Consultant and owner of Miss Behaviour: parenting coach and consulting services. Learn more through her e-newsletter, tips and blog at www.missbehaviour.ca

JR: One of the biggest time savers to prevent chaotic mornings is to prepare the night before! Choose outfits. Prepare backpacks. Pack lunches. Children at that age are seeking ways to be more independent and one effective way to help the process is for you to offer them choices. When picking out clothes for your daughter, avoid asking her if she wants to get dressed or not. Instead, ask which of the three outfits she wants to wear. Then allow her to pick her favourite from the three. See how quickly this power-struggle turns into positive bliss.

Q: How do we stop our 18-month old son from biting during playtime? We are first-time parents and suggestions from other parents just aren’t working for us. Ben & Melanie R, Vancouver, BC

Car ing for Baby’s Delicate Skin: What You Need to Know

If you have found yourself worried about your baby’s skin from time to time, you are not alone. Newborns don’t arrive with their own care manual. As a parent, you undoubtedly have your share of questions about baby’s skin and its unique and special needs. Francine Krenicki is a skin care expert with over 20 years of experience in the industry. Urbanbaby & Toddler Magazine had an opportunity to interview Francine, to gather answers to some of the most common questions new parents have when caring for baby’s delicate skin.

other day. On the other days, give baby a “sponge bath” using a second wash cloth just for the diaper area. If you notice skin fold irritation, clean and dry the area then apply a rich barrier or diaper balm like Skinfix Gentle Eczema Balm or Skinfix Diaper Rash Balm to calm the redness.

UBT: Why is baby’s skin so sensitive? FK: For nine months a baby is cozy and protected inside a mother’s womb and when they come out they can be exposed to potential irritants every day. Household cleaners including laundry detergent may contain fragrance and harsh cleansing agents that can cause rashes and skin flare ups. Exposure to extreme temperatures (hot and humid or cold and dry weather) can trigger moist rashes, eczema or dry irritated skin.

UBT: What are some tips on preventing diaper rash and eczema? FK: Diaper rashes and eczema flare ups have very different triggers. Most diaper rashes can be prevented with frequent diaper changes and applying a diaper balm with zinc oxide and emollients to create a physical barrier. For a stubborn diaper rash, try letting baby go diaper-free a few times a day to let fresh air hit the skin. Keep baby cool, dry and sweat-free. Give warm baths with gentle cleansers and moisturize immediately after. Pay attention to baby’s diet (common triggers for eczema can be nuts, dairy and eggs). Dress baby in soft breathable fabrics (nothing scratchy).

UBT: Are there ingredients/products that should never be applied to baby’s skin? FK: Simpler is always better when it comes to using products on a baby. Not all products labeled “baby” mean they are gentle enough for a baby with sensitive skin. Sunscreens products should not be applied on babies younger than six months because some ingredients may trigger a reaction. Check with your pediatrician for recommendations on suitable products and application. UBT: What can parents do to keep baby’s skin feeling smooth? FK: The best thing to keep baby’s skin soft and supple is make sure your baby is hydrated. Dehydration results in dry, flaky skin even with babies. Keep feedings on a regular schedule whether you are nursing or bottle feeding. After baby’s bath, apply a gentle fragrance-free moisturizer from head to toe. This locks in the surface moisture and leaves skin plump and hydrated. Indoor dry heating can also zap moisture from a baby’s skin. Smooth on a rich emollient cream or balm before going outside to keep delicate cheeks protected.

UBT: Babies (close to 12-months) may still have cradle cap. Is there anything parents can do to get rid of it? FK: Cradle cap is commonly found in newborns due to mother’s hormones still inside the baby. I would consult your pediatrician as it may be chronic scalp eczema and your doctor may be able to prescribe a special shampoo to loosen the flaky skin. You can also try massaging a natural oil to your babies scalp like olive oil or grape seed oil. This will moisten and loosen skin. Then wash baby’s hair with a tear-free shampoo. Share these useful tips with your spouse and other caregivers so you can maintain a consistent care routine to keep your little one content and “sleeping like a baby”. • Francine is the Senior Vice-President of Product Development for Skinfix, Inc. Her 20 years of experience

UBT: How often should baby have a bath? FK: A newborn shouldn’t be put in a bath until the umbilical cord falls off. Until then, a routine wipe down with a warm soft wash cloth is sufficient. Check with your pediatrician if you have any concerns or questions. Consider giving baby a “tub bath” every

Jour naling: A Great Way to Strengthen Your Bond

Even though our lifestyles are busy, having a close relationship with our children and truly connecting with them in a meaningful way is what we all want as parents. For that to happen, we need to keep the lines of communication open. No matter what question a parent asks, the child’s answers “yes”, “no” or “I don’t know”. This is a common dilemma for many parents who long to know how they can turn those short answers into actual conversations with their child.

Journaling is shown to reduce anxiety and stress in both adults and children. It helps your child clarify their thoughts/feelings and get in touch with their internal world, which in turns helps you know your child better.

A great way to achieve this is to encourage them to start a journal. In it, your child can write the things that are most memorable about their day. If you can, set aside some time to spend with each one of your children while they journal.

If your children are too young to write, they can draw the things they loved the most about their day. Another option is to tape photos and/or objects into their journal, like that feather found on the way to the park.

If you are pressed for time, you can always have ten of fifteen minutes as a family, where everyone writes in their journal sharing highlights. Daily journaling not only gives you a glimpse into your child’s life, it also has great health benefits.

At any age, journaling is a wonderful way to connect with your children because it gives you the chance to learn about the things that matter most to them. Journaling not only helps you understand your children. It will also help them get to know themselves by discovering things they like and don’t like, as well as those things that make them happy.

Circumcision over 35,000 circumcisions safely performed Local Anesthetic Quick & Virtually Painless Surgical Technique No Stitches Required Caring Team Providing Highly Personalized Care

A child’s understanding of their identity can have a big impact on their self-esteem and emotional health. Strengthen the bond you have with your children by staying with them while they work on their journal. Make sure that you are just an observer. Do not judge, correct, or influence your child in any way during this time. If your child is writing, do not spell-check. Keep in mind that this is not a school assignment, nor is it an opportunity to improve academic skills – it is simply a way for you to communicate with your children and get to know them. All you need to do is be present, and make the most of the experience by talking to them enthusiastically about the memories they choose to include in their journal. The activity also helps develop your child’s emotional intelligence, vocabulary and critical thinking skills. This, in turn, directly impacts your child’s school performance. Journaling can also inspire young writers too.

Clinics in Vancouver and New Westminster with fast and convenient access.

If your child really does not like the idea of journaling, an alternative would be to record short videos with your child talking about the things she loved most about the day or what she is looking forward to.

22 | www.urbanbaby.ca | spring 2015

Encourage your child to document not just big events, but also those little milestones such as his favourite song; a photo of that caterpillar in the backyard; a drawing of his favourite swing, or a photo of that fun day with Grandpa in the pool. Once journaling becomes a habit, you can also share your own thoughts and feelings with your child throughout the day. This will help your child develop empathy skills, by becoming more aware of your interests and needs, as well as his own. By paying attention to what matters most to your child, he will feel understood by you, and open up not only while he is journaling, but also throughout the day. Plan a picnic at the beach and mention “I remember you writing about how much you like the sea, and I thought you might enjoy coming here today”. You will soon see how childhood journals will become some of your most treasured keepsakes as your children grow. And you will be amazed how they will provide meaningful conversations with your child and strengthen your bond for years to come. • Natacha V. Company: Bamboletta Dolls | by Urbanbaby & Toddler

Bamboletta Dolls:

Lovingly Made By Stay-at-Home Moms

Name: Christina Platt Product: Natural, one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted dolls Website: bamboletta.com

It’s Party Time! Join us April 11th , 2015 for the UBT Spring Issue Facebook Par ty and

Win a Bamboletta doll!

How did the name Bamboletta come about? My family is Italian and my father called me Bamboletta when I was a little girl. It literally means ‘little doll’ and since it is a term of endearment, I thought it would be a very fitting name for my company.

Briefly describe your background and how you started your business. It all started because I fell in love with Waldorf dolls and wanted to gift one to my niece. When I couldn’t find one, I decided to make one. I thought that if there were others like me wanting a natural doll with a modern twist, then I just might have a business. Really I just wanted an excuse to make even more dolls. I remember how important my doll was to me and I love that I am part of creating something so unique for children around the world.

On average how many people do you have working for you? What is their background and how have they helped you shape your business? I have about 40 women working for me. A few work in my studio but most are stay-at-home moms. I feel very strongly about providing employment to women so they can stay home and be with their children. It has definitely been a factor in growing my business. Generally I find people through word-of-mouth or through friendsof-friends. When I find they have a certain skill, I will work with them so that skill can shine through. For example, I discovered that Andrea had an interest in dyeing and an incredible eye for colour so I gradually put her in charge of that. Those changes have allowed me to surpass what I originally began with. It’s like I had a seed of an idea and then my team nurtured and grew it into something beyond what I could have done alone. We keep the labour of love alive. And customers see that love as something tangible in each doll. That is the appeal of handmade. People can feel the difference when something is created that way. I feel fortunate that I’ve found a way to scale up my business using that approach.

How many dolls are produced each week? On average how many hours goes into making a doll? We make between 60 and 100 dolls a week, depending on the season. Our Sitting Doll takes us about 10 hours to make from start to finish.

24 | www.urbanbaby.ca | spring 2015

Are there some misconceptions about the amount of time it takes and the cost of the doll? People who are attracted to the dolls generally just get it. They can tell by looking at the dolls, the time and work that goes into creating each one. I used to get really bothered when someone would balk at the price but then realized it was because consumers were so used to seeing $25 dolls from big-box stores. I present a choice. You could get 10 of those plastic dolls that may just end up in the landfill, or you could get that one doll lovingly-made by local moms using the most natural materials. We are talking about a doll that your child will probably end up giving their child. When making thoughtful buying decisions, we need to look at where the money is going and what it is supporting.

Visitors to your website can quickly see that your dolls are truly “a labour of love”. What materials are used and where are they sourced? I love all our materials and feel very strongly about using the best materials I can find. After all, these dolls are for our children! We use Western Canadian wool from a mill in Alberta. Our yarns are all-natural wools and mohair from New York and Nova Scotia. We dye it ourselves. Our doll fabrics are mainly cottons. Of course there is the green aspect but there is also an aesthetic element to it all too. Picking up a doll that is stuffed with wool as compared to polyfill is a very different experience. With handmade dolls, there is a natural heft. It warms to the touch. It is naturally antibacterial and absorbs smell which can be very comforting to a child. •

Fi nd Your Passion and Pursue It! We have all heard about moms reinventing themselves while on maternity leave. We marvel at those moms featured on Dragon’s Den and Shark Tank who came up with an idea and in no time had a winning entrepreneurial venture. If only it was that easy! What about those of us who want work that feeds the soul but not interested in being self-employed? Maternity leave can be an ideal time to figure out how to get more worklife balance. It is not just about doing any job – far from it – it’s about finding your passion! So how can you get started on living the dream? In my book, Shift Forward: Shift Your Inner Drive Into Overdrive, I feature five important questions to ask yourself in the chapter Activate Your GPS – Goals, Passions and Strengths.

Question 1: What do you love to do? Think about activities that have so absorbed you that you forgot the time of day – the kind of work that was so compelling it left you oblivious to the passing hours. If you have not yet experienced such a work day, it is time you did.

Question 2: What are your accomplishments to date? Talk to people who know you well to get a fresh perspective on your many accomplishments and challenges you have overcome.

Question 3: What did you love to do as a child? Think about what you liked to do whenever you had the freedom to do what you wanted to. Think back to a time when what you did, was not governed by the approval of others.

Question 4: What are your key talents, strengths and skills? For clues, look at your pattern of recognition, awards and compliments you have received. Here is a valuable tip: What are some compliments you receive and often discount.

Question 5: What’s missing? How can you combine your passionate work to fill the void within you, while at the same time filling a void in your community or marketplace? Think about the kinds of products or services that stir the passion within. You could become an entrepreneur; do job-sharing with flex time or get involved in some non-profit cause that makes your heart sing. Write down the answers to the five questions and review them with someone who is very supportive to you. You would be surprised how easy it is to achieve more work-life balance while living your dream job. • Linda is an author and mentor-coach who helps individuals reach their potential through the power of clarity and identifying their GPS (goals, passions and strengths). The Waste-Free Lunch Challenge: Get Your Child Hyped!

The best way to reduce trash is to not create it. Imagine the difference we could make if students across our province adopted a waste-free lunch challenge. Such an initiative can have far-reaching results and demonstrate valuable lessons to our children. By working together, we can decrease the amount of garbage sent to the landfill, aid the environment plus help families and schools save money too. Talk about making progress! So what does a waste-free lunch entail? It means student lunches are prepared in such a way so there is no trash to throw away when students finish eating (just composting items such as apple cores, banana/orange peels and peach/cherry pits). Is your class up for the challenge?

Five Simple Ways to Pack a Waste-Free Lunch Solution

Benefits

REUSABLE carrier (cloth bag, lunchbox)

NO throw-away bags

REUSABLE containers

NO plastic wrap, foil or styrofoam

THERMOS for drinks

NO single-use cartons or cans

CLOTH NAPKIN to wash and re-use

NO paper napkins

SILVERWARE to wash and re-use

NO plastic forks and spoons

At the start of the week, teachers set up three separate containers in their classroom. One container is designated for landfill/garbage. The second container is for recyclable items. The third is for composting. Teachers instruct students to place their lunch waste into each container. At the end of the week, students in each classroom can see just how much has been collected in each container. It’s that easy! Teachers: Enter the UrbanKid Waste-Free Lunch Challenge for your classroom to win a Pizza Party and $500 in school supplies for your classroom.

Which Items are Considered Waste if not Recycled? Aluminum Foil A large amount of electricity is used in manufacturing foil.

Through educational programs children learn the importance of buying less; composting; reusing items and reducing the amount of garbage going to landfills. Less garbage means fewer landfills. It also translates to less energy required to move and process waste which further translates to less greenhouse gas emissions. The waste-free lunch challenge for students aids in reinforcing the principles behind this powerful chain reaction.

Urbanbaby & Toddler Magazine UrbanKid Waste-Free Lunch Challenge April 13th - 17th, 2015 Register by April 1st, 2015 online at www.urbanbaby.ca/waste-freelunch In preparation for Earth Day in April, students are encouraged to participate in the UrbanKid Waste-Free Lunch Challenge. The goal for each classroom is to go waste-free for the entire week.

30 | www.urbanbaby.ca | spring 2015

How does this challenge work? Participating schools can send a letter home with students about the goal and the process of the UrbanKid Waste-Free Lunch Challenge. Parents can help spread the word and get their children excited about the challenge.

Aluminum and Tin Cans

Half of the 100 billion cans sold in 2014 were sent to a landfill.

Banana and Orange Peels

As food decomposes in a landfill it generates harmful greenhouse gases such as methane (try composting).

Juice Boxes

Recyling of these items can take considerable time because they are made up of a number of different layers.

Paper Bags and Napkins

It is estimated that 17 trees are cut down for every ton of non-recycled paper.

Plastic Cutlery Every year we throw away enough paper and plastic cups, forks, and spoons to and Wrap circle the equator 300 times.

Styrofoam

Styrofoam is very difficult to recycle. The best way to protect the environment is to stop using it.

Valentino, 10 months old

1. What is the best part about being a mom? Watching the person I helped to create grow big and strong. 2. What is your favourite activity to do with your child(ren)? Valentino loves anything musical. We spend a lot of time listening to music and playing with his mini drums, piano and banjo. 3. What is your favourite television show? I’m really enjoying Jane The Virgin 4. What was the last book you’ve read? For myself: “You Are A Badass: How to Stop Doubting your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life” by Jen Sincero. For Valentino: “Lost My Name” by David Cadji-Newby 5. What is one product or service you can’t live without? I can’t get enough of my camera. As a photographer I love taking all kinds of photos. 6. How do you find some “Mommy Time”? I am extremely fortunate that my husband, son and I live with my parents. My husband and I make an effort to get out for one date night a week while our son spends some quality time with his grandparents. I get my “alone time” after my son goes to sleep. I often stay up a few hours, editing my photography; blogging; writing and browsing the Web for home décor inspirations.
