Hot Summer Fix:
Staying Cool at the Wading Pool One could reasonably argue there is no better combination than water and children. It starts with the fascination of walking through the first puddle. It splashes! It makes a sound like no other, and it’s still there after you jump in it many times. But the puddle season is over now – well, almost – so as the summer months peak from behind every blossoming cherry tree, both children and their parents are ready to have fun, in the water. Taking children to swimming pools and wading pools, is the next best thing to visiting any body of water that Mother Nature has gifted us with. In our province, people are most fortunate to have access to the ocean but as fascinating as that is, wading pools are often the least intimidating option for toddlers. Never thought of it? Consider this: When you’re just starting to make friends with the big wild world, a wave can be one scary event that may or may not leave you standing. So it is easy to understand a toddler’s refusal to get close to the mighty ocean waters. If your toddler is comfortable near the ocean, it is advisable that you’re always keeping your little one within the arm’s reach and even equip them with a life jacket if the waves are too daring. If your toddler is intimidated by the ocean, start by letting them experience it from a distance. Walk on the wet sand. Holding hands might make your little one venture closer to the water. Show how you can splash in the shallow water just until the next wave comes back. Never rush your tot’s interaction with the ocean. As natural curiosity-seekers, toddlers are intrigued about many things around them, yet the sea – with its vast amount of moving water – can be daunting for them. Remember when your little one
found transitioning to the big tub a tad intimidating. All the more reason why wading pools and water parks can be just what you need to have a fun, wet summer with your toddler. Fortunately, our region offers a bounty of wading pools and water parks, but here’s what you need to know before you head out:
Be Right There, ALWAYS No matter how shallow the water in a wading pool, whether at home or elsewhere, never leave a toddler unattended near a body of water.
Be Sun Safe Try to be in the sun in the early to late morning and then later in the afternoon, as the sunrays are strongest between 11am and 4pm, advises Health Canada. Equip your toddler with a sun hat and also try to use a rash guard as often as possible, especially on those days when the UV index is higher than three.
Water, Inside and Out Always have drinking water with you to keep you and your toddler well-hydrated. Make sure everybody is washing their hands with water and soap before a snack break, just like you would at home.
Water-Hidden Enemies It is true: Pools and water parks can have some unwanted guests. Some bacteria can cause vomiting and diarrhea. It is not pretty. No matter how careful the parents are, let’s face it; some toddlers will still urinate in the pool. Which is why it is a good idea to remind your potty-trained toddler to use the bathroom when Nature calls – just like you would at home. If your tot is not potty-trained yet or in transition, make sure you take your little one to the bathroom often enough and check if one-use swim diapers are accepted at the pool or park. More and more pools are opting for fabric multi-use swim suits for toddlers. The funky designs look better, are more economical and best of all, easier on the environment! When ready for a break, make sure your children wash their hands before touching their face or eating. Remind them as often as possible that drinking the “play water” is absolutely forbidden.

Also, it is a good idea to check with the pool managers about the tests that are being done to ensure family safety. Wading pools found at the community centers typically have some fun activities such as crafts to complement the water fun. You may even find kiosks selling ice cream bars and popsicles which can be the ultimate refresher for those hot summer days. •

Woohoo I’m Pregnant:
Now How Do I Tell My Boss? By world-wide standards, Canadian families can be considered to be very fortunate to have the option to take up to one year off work with the birth of each child; however Canadian employers may or may not feel so lucky. “Staffing around maternity leaves can be time-consuming, fruitless and expensive,” says Gloria Main a Human Resources Manager with a major Canadian retailer. “On the other hand, it gives our staff a lot of opportunity for cross training and employees can try out a role for a duration without having to commit to it. This shuffling around can prevent people from feeling stale in a position.” If you have just found out about your pregnancy and wondering which side of the coin your boss is on, keep reading for ways to safely navigate making your big announcement at work regardless of how he or she may feel about your pregnancy.
Check The Policy Most employers will have a policy around pregnancy, maternity

and parental leaves, so you first agenda item should be a trip to your employee handbook or intranet source to find your specific policy. Find out how much notice is required; who to tell and what information they want to know. “Most people in general, supervisors included, are excited to hear baby news,” says Main. “However, even when your boss is happy for you, he or she will still have questions around your plans for your leave. Will you leave well before your due date or work right to the end? How long are you planning to take for your leave?” It’s important to have thought through these concerns yourself before you make an appointment to speak to your boss.
Deciding When to Tell Pregnant moms can debate and grapple with the question of ‘when to tell’ as it relates to all relationships in their lives. Some women will tell no one until past a certain point (usually around 12 weeks when the risk of miscarriage is significantly reduced). Some will tell just close friends or their parents. Others will tell anyone who’ll listen as soon as they know.
Christina is the Principal Advisor for Black Swan HR Consulting Group, www.blackswanHR.com, and a mom to three kids under five. She welcomes parental leaves in her organization as an opportunity to transfer knowledge and try new things.
“I told my boss when I was just seven weeks,” says Kirstie Blake, a Port Coquitlam mom to a seven-year old son. “I was so sick and knew it was affecting my performance and mood. I didn’t want her thinking I was struggling with my job so I figured I may as well tell her.” Jenn Dower, a Vancouver mom of two, also told her boss early. “I wanted my boss to be happy for me,” says Dower. “Had I miscarried I would have needed time off anyway. So I figured it was better to tell him when the news was good.”
Telling Your Boss A good time to spill the beans about your baby is right in line with a large project completion or some other significant contribution. This way you can prove you are still able to keep up to your usual performance standards and just as committed to your job as ever, which will dispel some of the fears your employer may be having. A bad time to make your big announcement is right before a performance or a salary review. If you end up with a bad review you’ll never have to wonder if was due to your pregnancy news and if you were a victim of pregnancy discrimination.
Common Courtesy Consider how your employer will feel if he or she were to find out about your pregnancy through the grapevine. So if you really must tell someone around your office be sure that they can keep your secret for you. “My best advice is to make an appointment when your boss isn’t feeling swamped or rushed. Maybe even go for lunch,” says Main. “And be willing to reschedule if your boss is having a bad day or some unexpected work crisis has come up. Regardless of whether you tell your boss sooner or later, just be sure that you do so when you are emotionally ready and well prepared to answer some questions around your plans. If your boss does not appear upbeat about your news, don’t sweat it. Your boss has an agenda to watch the company’s bottom line and may be wondering what your pregnancy will mean to the organization. Don’t let that get you down. Remember no one has the right to make you feel guilty during one of the most exciting times of your life. •

UBT: Fathers have such an unique relationship with their children. Tell me about your role as a Dad. What things do you like to do with your daughter? SM: I love spending time with my daughter. We have several rituals since the day she was born, that are our special time. We get up in the morning together. She sits with me while I have breakfast and she has her milk. When I come home at night, we have our play time. I gave her every single bath during her first year and I still do most baths, unless I am away. I read to her and try to put her to bed every night as well. We also go swimming together. UBT: Do you have a funny Dad moment you could share with our readers? SM: My daughter and I play a lot of games together and she’s a “laugh-aholic”. I found out how to make her laugh and now I can make her laugh like crazy. It makes every moment, a funny Dad moment. 8 | www.urbanbaby.ca | summer 2013
UBT: For many new parents once a baby arrives, time and money are limited so home improvements often land up on the back burner. What advice would you give to new parents about getting home renovations or repairs done after baby arrives? SM: It is definitely difficult to make those things balance. When we knew we were having a baby, I took on as many aroundthe-house projects as possible. Once the baby comes, it’s full time for both parents, so I would suggest getting as much done ahead of time as you can. Once the baby comes, it’s time to hire someone to do it for you! UBT: You are an accomplished business man, television host, educator and author. What is next for you? What is on your business bucket list? SM: I am always working on something. I look for solutionoriented businesses and right now I am working on a way to help people find better contractors. Stay tuned for more details over the next several months. UBT: How has your daughter changed how you manage your work-life balance? Do you find it harder to manage all the hours you work and the demanding nature of producing television shows? SM: Absolutely. It’s been a huge change. I have to adjust my schedule and be more disciplined about my time management to make sure I am home. I have to be more efficient and share as much of the work load as possible with my wife. Instead of waking up and going for a run, I wake up and change a dirty diaper. And I eat my breakfast 50% faster than I used to. UBT: What has been the biggest challenge since becoming a Dad? SM: Balancing work and family. You want to spend more time at home, but you still want to accomplish as much as you used to, so that’s challenging. My work involves a lot of traveling, so bringing the whole family can be tough, but we’ve managed to do it. UBT: What has been the biggest joy since becoming a Dad? SM: Every milestone that my daughter has, is exciting. Each day I look forward to coming home to get a hug and make her laugh. You know that excitement when you get a surprise gift. Every day is like that with my daughter. •

Getting Social Online or Offline:
What’s Right for You? I’ll never forget my first winter as a Vancouver mom. My daughter was born just as summer turned the corner into fall. For the first few weeks of her life, she and I lived out a West Coast fantasy: lazy days in the sunshine, drifting along under gently falling leaves, listening to the lap of the ocean waves on the beach. Life was wonderful, motherhood seemed like a glorious dream. Then it started raining. I was new to the city. I didn’t know another mom. Each rainy day was followed by yet another rainy day. So instead of strolling along the beach, I found myself pacing my tiny living room, joggling a fussy baby in a state of increasing desperation. Finally, I remembered some pamphlets the public health nurse had dropped off on her postpartum visit. I dug them
out and found meeting times for parent-infant drop-ins at my local community health centre. The following week I ventured out in what turned out to be a heavy rainstorm. There I was trying to shield baby and I, plus our oversized diaper bag under one undersized umbrella. We arrived drenched and late, but I was euphoric. I was going to make friends! Get advice! And my baby would meet other babies. Reality check: my baby was six weeks old and not remotely interested in socializing. As I turns out, I made friends and collected good advice. In fact, those drop-ins became my lifeline. I listened avidly as other women shared their anxieties and frustrations. I revealed some of my own private parenting demons, and pitched in enthusiastically with ideas and opinions on everything from how to introduce solids to the perfect spacing between baby one and baby two. Life started to fill up, and those lonely, rainy afternoons I had spent pacing with a cranky baby all faded into memory. That all happened back in the dark ages (the late nineties!) when there were very few online resources for new parents. Today’s new moms are blessed with an incredible variety of online communities. Social networks, forums, Facebook groups, blogs and message boards offer the possibility of connecting with other parents anywhere, anytime on countless topics. So how do those online connections stack up against oldfashioned face time? Have virtual relationships trumped the tangible when it comes to new-parent support? “I find sharing my frustrations online really freeing,” says Megan, a mom of two, who is a regular poster on a parenting message board. “Sometimes, I just need to vent. I’d rather do that online – you don’t have to worry about being judged.” Like many who look to social networks for parenting advice and support, Megan is frequently overwhelmed by the caring 12 | www.urbanbaby.ca | summer 2013

www.urbanbaby.ca
responses she receives from women she’ll likely never meet in person: “It feels like I have a million big sisters, giving advice and looking out for me” she says. That infinitely expanding network is one of the biggest advantages that online support has over local community groups. If no one in your neighborhood has had trouble breastfeeding, you can go online and instantly connect with thousands of women who are dealing with precisely the same challenges. But what about some of the less obvious benefits of the face-to-face experience? Ruby Banga is a Vancouver parenting expert who has spent over fifteen years bringing parents together to support one another through the challenges and joys of raising kids. She doesn’t hesitate when asked for her opinion in the online vs. live debate: “I’m a huge advocate of live groups” she says. “I don’t believe you get the same experience online.” Ruby points out that listening to other parents talk about their issues – even though we may not share their particular problem – can deepen our own understanding of how we parent. “When you sit and listen to others’ experiences and take it all in with the body language, facial expressions, etc, you have a chance to process and reflect what you have learned and then apply the learning to your parenting situation.” “I think forums are great for validating your feelings,” says Julie, who credits her online support network with helping her weather through a postpartum depression. “There’s always someone who’s been through what you’re going through. I have gained so much by just watching how other parents actually handle their kids. You can’t get that from the web.” So what’s the best option for new parents? Stay connected online, offline, in organized groups, or in somebody’s living room. Take advantage of every resource out there to create the networks of support that will sustain you as a parent. Find a balance of online and offline relationships that’s right for you. Keep in mind both have their strong points and limitations. Yet collectively, they offer a much better alternative than pacing the living room with baby on those lonely, rainy afternoons. • Marilee is a writer, editor and mother of two tweens who tries hard not to be jealous of the support, resources and fancy strollers available to today’s crop of new parents. She blogs about communications at www.mapcommunication.ca.

Regaining Your Pre-Pregnancy Body The reality is, things change when you have a baby. Your body structure shifts, hormones go bananas, ligaments loosen and life as you knew it; has been altered. The change doesn’t mean you can’t rock your new mom body. Most commonly, the areas that become the weakest during pregnancy are your butt (glutes) and core. Before starting any exercise regime, check with your doctor. Here is a simple exercise program that takes very little space, involves no equipment and will only take about three minutes to complete one set. The goal of the program is to complete each exercise with proper form and 15-second rest between each exercise. Work up to doing three circuits of all the exercises. Before you get started, check out these useful tips to stay on track.
Slow is Best Starting slow is the key to a safe and quick comeback. You may have to start with what feels like “just going through the motions”. If you feel great the next day, then continue to increase the intensity. The biggest mistake most moms make is jumping back in to where they left off, neglecting to realize that the changes that took place have a lasting effect (however not irreversible). This often results in pain or injury and can be a big mental and physical setback to attaining quick results.
TRY THIS QUICK POST-PREGNANCY ROCK
Time is of the Essence There is no better time than now. You want results? Just do it. Book your workouts in advance in your schedule. If your days are impossible to schedule at this time, keep a strategically-placed visual reminder of the exercises you want to do, on the fridge, by your computer or on a mirror. Commit to doing them when you can throughout the day.
Get Real with Yourself Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Start with a small goal. You don’t need to spend an hour in the gym several times a week; you simply need to do more than you are doing right now. As you keep up with it, you will feel stronger and more energetic. This will make it more plausible to do more as you go along. You will get there as long as you stick with it.
Walk the Walk If nothing else, walk. Walking is a great low impact exercise that is an easy way to get fresh air, be social with others and get from point A to point B. If you decide you want to run, always start with a run/walk program and do a proper warm-up beforehand. A good place to start is to run for one minute, walk for two minutes and continue this for a total of seven to ten minutes.
YOUR BODY PROGRAM FOR 6 WEEK
Wall Sits Targets & Purpose: Strengthens instability in your pelvis and quads in the legs. • Stand feet apart with your back against a wall, then slide down until your knees are about parallel to the floor. • Toes should be in front of knees and weight in your heels. • Press tailbone gently into wall. • Try to draw jawbones back so your ears are aligned over your shoulders. Reps: Hold for 30 seconds up to one minute
Stationary Lunges Targets & Purpose: Strengthens and tones thighs and glutes, while challenging your balance. • Start with feet shoulder width apart. Step one foot back. • Your front knee should be over your heel or mid-foot. Drop back knee straight down. Proper form is important when doing lunges so make sure your knees are not over your toes. • Keep your weight in your front heel as you lower and lift. • Keep chest and upper body upright by not leaning forward. Reps: 6-12 each side
Bridge with Adduction Targets & Purpose: If your glutes or core have gone dormant, this is a fantastic isolated exercise to wake them up. • Lie on your back with feet shoulder width apart. • Place a small ball or pillow between knees/inner thighs. • Tuck tailbone under gently. • Think of squeezing a penny between your glutes as you initiate the lift from below the hips. Tuck your tailbone under gently, so as not to lift with your lower back. • Lift and lower slowly. Reps: 10-20
Classes Weekday Mornings at
9:30am

Targets & Purpose: The plank exercise is great for building endurance in the abs, back and for your posture to be able to hold your own body weight. • Place elbows directly below shoulders. • Keep head in line with spine (do not look at your toes). • Keep spine in neutral (to find neutral: arch back, tuck tailbone under, and settle in the middle). • Do not hold breath. Reps: Start with 15-30 seconds then progress to 60 seconds. *If you have recently had a baby or have done no abdominal exercise in a very long time, start your plank on your knees instead of on your toes. Work up to doing the plank from your toes for intervals of 15, 30 or 60 seconds. When you are tired or start to feel the exercise in your back, drop down to your knees and gently tuck your tailbone under for the reminder of the time.
When thinking about exercising, the good news is, if you were active before, your body will come back relatively quickly. Your muscles will remember the movement once you get them going again. If you were not active before, think of yourself as having a ‘preserved’ body that is just waiting to be used. Before starting your exercise plan, communicate with your doctor or midwife about any concerns and if need be, ask about how you can adjust your workouts specifically for you. •

We asked our readers to answer the following question with regards to spending time with their children…
What is your favourite place to go with your children and why? Here is how you answered the question ...I love to take my son on a walk to the nearby park. He used to just sleep on our walks, but now he stays awake for the whole trip. We stop at a bench and watch the older kids on the playground and I love seeing his expression as he watches them. It’s almost like he can’t wait to be big enough to join them. ~ Amber P, Surrey ...My favorite place to go with my child is my parents’ house. Watching him play and explore in the house I grew up in gives me a glimpse of what my childhood was like. It’s amazing to share that with him. ~ Doris B, Vancouver
Congrats to our winner of the $100 UBT gift certificate to spend with a Spring advertiser. ...My favourite place to take my one-year old daughter is the weekly story time at our local bookstore. I love watching her listen and sit still in complete awe for 30 minutes! The “story lady” really enjoys what she’s doing. ~ Jessica C, Surrey
...I love to take my kids to any park, big or small. The smiles on their faces are priceless. It’s the little things that matter most. ~ Korina M, Cloverdale ...I love taking our kids to Cultus Lake waterslides in the summer! We make a day of it! My husband and I take turns going on the bigger slides with my stepson! We always finish our day at our favourite ice cream spot across the street. ~ Stephanie M, Surrey …We love the going to Science World. It’s a day full of learning and having lots of fun (sometime I learn more than they do) and it’s a great anytime of the year. ~ Maggy E, Vancouver …I love taking my children around our community. There is so much to explore in our own backyard. We pretend we are tourists for the day and stop at the local shops, library and take a tour of the heritage buildings. ~ Mark C, Maple Ridge

Decoding Toddlers:
Top 10 Discipline Techniques Talking with toddlers is sometimes like trying to understand directions in a foreign language and disciplining them is like getting lost in a foreign country. Learn how to be more effective so that you can finally speak the same language as your toddler. Summer is a wonderful time of year filled with spontaneous activities, lazy days and new experiences but it could also be a tricky time for toddlers who crave structure, firm boundaries and routine. Ensure you are going to be proactive rather than reactive when it comes to tackling your toddler’s behaviours and potential meltdowns. As an Early Childhood Consultant, I believe it’s never too early to start setting up healthy boundaries to allow your baby or toddler to know what is expected of them. Sail through summer smoothly by filling your parenting tool box with Miss Behaviour’s Top 10 Discipline Techniques:
Look at the Meaning Behind the Behaviour Don’t focus too much on the symptoms like the hitting and biting. Figure out ‘why’ they are doing it. Boredom, hunger, attention or frustration? Act accordingly.
Meet Their Needs They are learning many things and therefore have many needs. If you do not meet their particular need they will most likely keep seeking it out or demonstrating those behaviours over and over until they get what they want, either appropriately or not.
Teach Not Punish
Assist with Communication
Teach your child the skills they need in life. Encourage learning versus living in fear.
Offer them one to two words max like ‘my turn’ and show a sign of patting your hand to your chest to learn turn-taking.
The Essential Father’s Day Gift Laptop, stress ball, business cards. Of all the desktop necessities that help Dad make it through the work day, none is more essential than a reminder about what’s really important—a photo of his loved ones. Book a session before June 16 and when you purchase a frame from our collection, Bopomo will fill it for free with a print of your choice (while supplies last). And if you add any of our custom photo gifts—cuff links, golf accessories, shaving kits, and more—we’ll throw in a 10% discount. It’s our gift to you…for your gift to him.

Give Appropriate Choices Let your toddler choose between items within the expectation that you would like. Don’t ask if they want to get dressed or not but rather offer two or three types of outfits they can pick from.
Let Them Be in Charge Toddlers love to have their independence but of course give it within appropriate boundaries. Let them be in charge of the books they get from the library, not how many.
Stuck on Saying “Sorry” Forcing words out will likely get you into a power struggle. Try to focus on your toddler feeling empathy for the child they hurt (accident or not) by taking your toddler up to the crying child to check if he or she is okay. Model to your tot what the process looks like and what to say.
Ditch the Time-Outs They are overall lacking in results for most kids and are definitely not appropriate for toddlers. Even if it appears that they have some remorse or if they apologize, it’s usually because they are trying to please you not because they understand.
Spanking is Not an Option It contributes to low self-esteem and self-worth which we are seeing more of as our children get older and especially in their teen years. If you choose to spank, hit or punish your child, realize that it is out of your frustration and fear.
It’s Not Personal As much as it seems that toddlers are behaving a certain way on purpose, rest assured children are not trying to make your life worse. They are looking to you to see if what they are doing is right or wrong and learning from your reaction. These methods will help support healthy self-esteem and strong self-worth in your child. It will give them the ability to show love, respect and kindness towards others because that is what you will be modelling to them. Use this as the foundation for discipline. These principles work the same for all children, even teens! It will help ensure that the consequences you give your child are respectful, effective and fair as it comes from a positive and healthy place versus disciplining out of frustration and not knowing what to do. • Julie is an Early Childhood Consultant at Miss Behaviour: parenting coach and consulting services. “With summer here how can I keep my son who is four-years old interested in reading and teach my baby daughter the basics of reading” Audrey K, Richmond
Books and Summer: The Perfect Duo A:
The love of reading is best fostered at home, and supported by you, the parent. It is never too early or too late to teach your children about curling up with a book during those lazy, hazy days of summer.
Use Different Voices for Different Characters in a Book
Remember the portability of books in the campground, park or Grandma’s backyard. When children are little, take the time to read to them every night, and delight in the stories you discover together.
Here is an approach children of all ages will love. By making a special voice for the ogre of the story, then for the little girl he meets, and all the other characters, you help your child imagine the story, bringing it to life. Once your child begins to read, even when she is not reading aloud, she will in turn adopt the habit of giving book characters their own voice, their own life, which will greatly increase her reading comprehension skills and work with her imagination.
When your children are beginning to read alone, still be sure to make this a great bonding experience, by spending time with them while they read. Many parents put a lot of effort in teaching their children to read, and reading to them every night until they learn to do it alone, but then stop once the child can read.
Follow with Your Finger
Reading is the most important habit to instill in children. It increases their vocabulary, which directly boosts their performance at school. Reading will expand their knowledge and open their minds to many possibilities.
If your child is just learning to read or is an inexperienced reader, it helps when you follow with your finger as you tell the story. This will show him that, in the English language, we read from left to right. It will also help your child discover that every word you are reading is there, on the book, and once your child is beginning to read, he will start visually recognizing whole words. This is like watching a movie with subtitles. You don’t need to read the subtitles if you understand the language, but you tend to want to read them anyway.
At school, children learn the actual phonetic combinations and explore reading more on a practical side. Yet the love of reading is something you, as a parent, can make fun and appealing year-round. To make reading time special, here are ten tips you can use:
Take the Time to Look at the Images Together
After Reading to Your Child, Read with Your Child
Instead of just reading the book, look at the images with your child and see what they tell you. This will teach your child to look for cues in the images that tell him what is about to happen in the book. Using this strategy will help the child increase his vocabulary by enabling him to “guess” what a new word means, just by understanding its context.
Remember, when you children starts to read on their own they will miss that time with you and will not feel the same encouragement. Your job is now to show her how great it is to read. Read to him or her from time to time even when your child develops reading skills. Occasionally sit by your child and read your own book while he or she reads a favourite book. This will not only shows that you

like reading, it will give the two of you time to bond and allow your child to share the reading experience with you.
Buy a Special Book Together Make it a time you spend together, just the two of you. Take your child to the bookstore and let them know you would like to buy a book which he or she gets to choose. Bookstores have a special feeling to children. They are wonderful places to spend a little time just browsing. Your child will later associate the happy experience when reading the book at home. If you like, instead of visiting a bookstore, you can spend time together at the library, and borrow a book instead.
Refer Back to Stories You Have Read Together Casually in your conversations, refer back to the stories you read together. Make comments like, ”It’s like that rabbit that we read about in that story who couldn’t get out of his home. Remember?” This will help make the reading experience more valuable, and make your child intrigued with the things he or she has learned about, or experienced through books.
Read Your Children’s Books Imagine a day when your son finishes reading a long children’s novel, passes it to you and says, “you should read this mom”. This can happen. When you spend years reading together and talking about books with your child, you will develop a bond and common interest. Your children will begin to know what books appeal to you and vice versa. Reading creates confidence in children and sets the foundation for them to read more complex stories as they mature. Literacy is one of the most important skills you can teach your child and summer is an ideal time to foster this positive life-long habit. So whenever you need to take a “quiet break”, this summer teach them to reach for that special book. Your child will learn to take pleasure in books, rather than viewing reading as a chore. • Natacha is a parenting expert, teacher, international speaker, published writer, and the founder or the successful Core Education & Fine Arts Junior Kindergarten schools (www.cefa.ca). You can reach her at natachabeim.com.
Write a Special Message When giving your children a book as a gift, write a special message about how you look forward to reading the book with them, or how proud you are that they are reading so much. This will strengthen the bond between the two of you, and make the habit of reading even more enjoyable.
Read in Front of Your Child Children learn by example. If you enjoy reading, they will learn to enjoy reading just by watching you. This summer plan to take the time to cozy up in the backyard with a book you really enjoy or a magazine. Children will see reading as a part of homelife, and often follow your good habits as they grow.
Share With Them What You Learned from Reading During dinner-time, or at anytime throughout the day, share the things you read about in your books. Offer insights such as, “This book really made be think about the importance of appreciating what you have,” or “I loved reading the part where the young boy was faced with a life-changing decision, it reminded me of a time when I was young.” When sharing, preface your comment by saying, “I read today,” so your children see other positive examples of how reading enriches your life. Tell your family about what you read in the newspaper, or what you learned from a magazine or blog.

Reinventing the Working Vacation With the boom of the working mom and the mom entrepreneurs, Canadian moms are looking for a place to get away, but not fully unplug. The working vacation need not be a dark cloud looming over your downtime. If you plan it right, it can become your ultimate office-on-the-road. With the hot weather arriving and the children at home fulltime, chances are you are longing to plan a getaway with the family. What about your business? Is it possible to just packup-and-go without missing a beat? Being a mom entrepreneur on a working vacation has its perks but it also can mean your day is jam-packed, with you wearing multiple hats. I know the dilemma all too well, having run my business successfully while travelling through Europe for three weeks with my husband and one-year old son last year. I had a similar experience when we took off for a ten-day Okanagan vacation with our two-week old daughter and toddler for a post-baby-bonding trip. Here are a few tips to enjoy the quality time with your family and not have your hubby rolling his eyes as you pull out your iPhone while sitting by the pool:
know when those storm clouds will surface or when baby needs to nap in the stroller. I have packed a tattered Lonely Planet book with me for the past decade and it has never let me down.
Keep it All in One Place Use tools like Tripit for email itineraries and let them stream to your calendar. Check on flights, your hotel arrangements and prepaid events all in one place.
Schedule Your Work Time Setting time allotments for family and work is important. Have a conversation with your partner about the hours you will be working and that you will be turning off technology when you are not working.
Virtual Meeting Time Still need to check in? Load Skype onto your phone or your computer. Now nap time can be a great opportunity to hop out on the lanai and connect for a quick call.
Family Time Comes First!
Leave the Paper at Home
Downtime comes so infrequently for families these days so it is important to take advantage of it when you have the opportunity. When you are sitting by the pool turn off the phone; put down the book and enjoy the time with your kids. Your husband and your kids will thank you for it!
Loading up Cloud tools like Dropbox and Google Docs enables you to work seamlessly with collaborators. You can also do invoicing on the fly with Freshbooks. Such tools free you from having to pack up numerous documents while on vacation.
Single-Tasking is Essential
The best ideas come from allowing your mind to slow down, relax and be inspired. Take a journal, or use tools like Evernote to compile audio, pictures and notes-to-self.
Many of us get caught up in texting, tweeting and posting during those ‘not so exciting moments.’ By focusing on the kids and stepping away from work, you will find yourself less frazzled and fully present.
Check for Wi-Fi Plan ahead to ensure you have Wi-Fi connection for answering emails and staying updated while on vacation. This preplanning is key to any working vacation and should be at the top of your list.
Plan, Plan and Plan Some More Ensure you have options for changing your day on the fly in case something comes up that needs addressing. You never 24 | www.urbanbaby.ca | summer 2013

Remember to Relax This is the one time of year when taking some “me time” will help you get recharged. Nothing is more calming than a nap by the ocean or a walk on a trail to get you reconnected to what you love about your business. • Meghan is the founder of Coquitlam Mommy, an online parenting website and mSummit coming to Vancouver. Fun in the Sun:
Sun Protection for All The Canadian Dermatology Association reminds us that babies are not born with a developed skin protection system, having sensitive skin that is thinner than adult skin and can burn more easily. Even children born to parents with deeply pigmented (dark) skin require maximum protection from the sun.
Sun safety recommendations for children under the age of one (1) year. • Keep babies out of direct sunlight, either in a stroller with a hood or canopy, under an umbrella, or in a heavily shaded spot. • Long walks are best in the early morning or late afternoon. If possible, limit being outside for long periods with an infant between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., especially around noon. • Babies should wear sun hats with a wide brim. Dress infants in loose-fitting, lightweight clothing that covers their legs and arms. • A small amount of sunscreen (for babies) may be applied to areas of the skin that are not covered by clothing such as the face and the backs of the hands. Avoid the mouth and eye area when applying. If a baby does rub sunscreen in his or her eye, no need to panic: sunscreen does not cause blindness, although it may sting. • Look for a sunscreen product for babies with an SPF of 30 that also provides broad spectrum protection (protects against UVA and UVB). Always try a small amount of sunscreen on the infant’s inner arm before general use. Check for a reaction up to 48 hours later. • Contact your pediatrician at once when a baby under the age of one year gets a sunburn. A severe sunburn is an emergency in children this young.
Sun safety recommendations for children over the age of one (1) year. • Stay aware of the risks of being over exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the sun; • Organize outdoor activities outside the peak hours of 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and if possible, try to keep children entirely out of the sun from noon to 2 p.m.; • Educate children and youth about the benefits of wearing protective clothing, sunglasses and sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher; and • Take shelter in shade structures on playgrounds and at sport fields. This can also include creating a sun safe environment by encouraging children to seek shade from trees, awnings, umbrellas or buildings. Remember – being in the sun is fun, so make it safe for everyone! For more information www.ec.gc.ca. summer 2013 | www.urbanbaby.ca | 25

Raising a Money-Smart Generation Teaching young children about money is important for creating a sense of accomplishment and is extremely valuable for setting children up for success in their daily lives as adults. Understanding the value of a dollar and how to earn money is one of the biggest life lessons children need before venturing out into the real world. Here are five easy ways to help your child learn to be money-smart:
Teach Them the Basics of Money 101 Sit down with your child and explain how you earn a paycheque at work and how earning money relates to a lifestyle. Talk about the myths of the “magical ATM” that seems to shoot out money whenever you need it. Gail Vaz-Oxlade author of Money-Smart Kid$ says “Children should be taught that money is earned through hard work.”
Real Life Experiences Take your child with you grocery shopping and keep them involved in the process. Let them pick items while you explain the cost difference between similar items. Explain how and why to you may buy cheaper options. When at the cashier, let them see how much the prices can add up so that they begin to understand why it’s important to be practical about purchases.
Set a Tangible Goal Have your child find out the cost for a particular item they want. Write that amount and the name of the item on a post-it note and stick it on to a see-through jar, so they can see their money increase. The post-it note is a reminder of what the money is for and keeps them from dipping in to the jar. This is the first step towards teaching them about budgeting.
Let Them Watch Their Money Grow Take elementary school-age-children to open their own savings account. Get an account that comes with a bankbook so that each time they make a deposit, they can see that balance get higher and higher, and what a great time to learn about interest rates too.
Celebrate Your Child’s Goals Celebrate successful saving practices by recognizing them and encouraging repeat performance. When your child is close to saving enough money to buy that special item, throw in the last few dollars or cents. Tell them they have done a great job and that you want to chip in. When it comes to allowance, every parent will do it differently. I started giving my daughter allowance when she turned 5-years old. I gave her five dollars every two weeks. This routine is convenient for parents who are paid bi-weekly. You can both have a “payday” and it also serves as a reminder for you as well.

I chose the amount of a dollar per year of age as my standard. It increases on every birthday. My daughter is now 11-years old so she receives eleven dollars every two weeks. Find what works best for your family and budget. As for chores, some are mandatory such as cleaning her room; putting laundry in the machine and putting her clothes into drawers. Those chores do not count for extra money. In my household if her mandatory chores aren’t done, then she does not get her allowance. I like to encourage the motto of “time worked equals time paid.” Other chores are optional for which I offer a small dollar value to allow her to understand what it means to earn her money. Such chores range from shredding paper and bills; helping with yard work and doing other odd jobs I may need help with. Hardworking parent Jenny Jiang says, “Children need to share doing house chores because if they feel accomplished about doing a good job at home, it will set them up for the future.” Teaching children the reality behind how money works is something many of us don’t do until there is a money problem, and it becomes a necessity. When your children learn about earning and saving as part of everyday life, your entire family benefits. • Chelene is a single parent and freelance writer living in Vancouver with her 11-year old daughter Desiraye. They are always on the lookout for new ways to save money and inexpensive ideas to have fun together.

Robyn • Burnaby, BC Hunter, 11 months old
1. What is the best part about being a mom? I love watching Hunter grow and change just a little bit every day. He makes me appreciate how precious life is and to be grateful for our time together. 2. What is your favourite activity to do with your children? I love taking my son to the Barnet Marine Dog Park for a stroll along the ocean trails. I have him in the jogging stroller while playing fetch with our dogs. 3. What is your favourite television show? Four Weddings Canada, because I am in the midst of planning my wedding. 4. What was the last book you’ve read? I just finished reading “Conscious Parenting” by Lee Lozowick. It puts into perspective the importance of being awake and conscious to meet the deepest needs of our children. 5. What is one product or service you can’t live without? My cloth diapers by Tender Tushies save us so much time and money. I also love my diaper bag by So Young Mother. It keeps me organized when I’m on the go. 6. How do you find some “Mommy Time”? I try to have my mommy time when Hunter is sleeping. At his age, it is still difficult to have time alone, but I appreciate even the smallest events like a uninterrupted hot shower. It’s a great way to relax and think about my day…and my little guy too!
